Re: HP LaserJet P1005 on/off problem
As a guess, what version of HPLIP are you using? it may be that you need to update it to a newer version as there could be something specific that needs to be sent to the printer to wake it up (not sure) But I have a all in one unit here HP-4400 and this looses the plot! if not printed or used as a scanner, to resolve this, it just needs the power to be cycled. Thanks Scott, I believe I am using the latest HPLIP version -3.9.4b. I just Googled wake up printer . . . There is a lot of chatter. Most of which I don't really understand. But it does seem to be a common problem. Is there, maybe, a simple command I can send via Terminal? I've tried CTRL +ALT+Backspace that doesn't work. Perhaps you need the plugin for the P1005 from this address: http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/ Andre 2009/5/24 The Wassermans dw...@optusnet.com.au On Sat, 2009-05-23 at 17:55 +1000, Scott Evans wrote: As a guess, what version of HPLIP are you using? it may be that you need to update it to a newer version as there could be something specific that needs to be sent to the printer to wake it up (not sure) But I have a all in one unit here HP-4400 and this looses the plot! if not printed or used as a scanner, to resolve this, it just needs the power to be cycled. Re: HP LaserJet P1005 on/off problem
Hi Dave, Well CTRL+ALT+Backspace is only for restarting your X server! (except in Jaunty requires dontzap to be installed to re-enable) I'm not 100% familiar with the model printer that you have, but I'm assuming its a entry level laser-jet. Do you connect this by USB? if so, you may find that by removing the USB cable from it for 5-10 seconds then plugging it back in that it may resume as it should. although I have just searched the Ubuntu forums and there seems to be quite a lot of mention about this model printer and the confusion between HP-1005 HP-P1005. There is this link http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/ but if you are not comfortable with any of this then DON'T attempt this! I normally wouldn't suggest this type of fix as it could leave you with a broken Ubuntu, hence it is usually best for you to stick with what's in the Ubuntu repositories as they are known to work! (but not always!) and you have a lesser chance of complete system failure. Another thing to try, to confirm that your printer is picked up would be to start the PC without the printer attached, then once booted logged in, plug the printer in and in a terminal type lsusb (without quotes!) and see if the printer is in the listing (similar to below) Bus 001 Device 011: ID 03f0:6c11 Hewlett-Packard Bus 001 Device 007: ID 03f0:3404 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 6122 This way you will know if the printer is being detected and would lead to an issue with either HPLIP or CUPS. Re: HP LaserJet P1005 on/off problem
Thank you both Andre Scott, Well, the plugin certainly fixed the print quality. Resolution and printable area. But the on/off syndrome remains with me. For the present I have to remember to make sure the P1005 in turned on before I boot up or I get the may not be connected error message. In Windows if I turn on the printer after sending a job, I have to go into Printer Control and refresh the print job to get it working. So it's not problem free. But for the price $95 with cartridge it prints fast and well in both systems. So I still need a solution to wake up the connection in situ - eventually. Thanks again, Dave W On Sun, 2009-05-24 at 11:04 +1000, Andre Mangan wrote: For general information, regarding the HP 1005 and the HP P1005 - both printers require the plugin. See list here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin.html While HPLIP is open source, the plugins are proprietary and not included in HPLIP. Whether or not the plugin will fix Dave's printer problem remains to be announced.
