Hello.
As a list also exists for WA, but that list appears to be inactive, I
am curious as to whether anyone in addition to me, on this list, is in
WA.

Re: Ubuntu Unity desktop

2017-12-04 Thread Rob Dawson
I made the switch to the Gnome desktop in 17.04 and it was the best
thing I could have done.  I never felt really comfortable with Unity and
I find Gnome is much more suited to how I work.  I added the Gnome
extension "Dash to Dock" and I find it superior to the Unity dock in
that I can place it in any location (I use the bottom of the screen) and
I can duplicate it across multiple monitors.  Gnome uses the Window key
for a similar functionality to the HUD and it's quick and responsive.
In a nutshell Gnome just feels like it's integrated much better with the
OS and I don't miss anything about Unity now; in a very short space of
time I was comfortable with Gnome and have been even happier with it as
time passes.

I like the Unity desktop. All my favourite programs are quickly

Unity gives me fast access to programs and I would be disappointed at
losing it. Is there a choice?

Re: Ubuntu Unity desktop

2017-12-03 Thread Gregory Storer
I have Unity on my desktop computer and find it very easy to use, and I
have gnome on my laptop after updating that to 17.10.

Can't say I'm loving Gnome, I find it clunky and ugly.

I put this down to familiarity, and I'm sure in a few months I'll wonder
what all the fuss was about.

It may sort of look like Unity, however I don't think it mimics it very
well at all.

Re: No Ubuntu Laptops available in AU

2016-07-05 Thread Anil Gulati
I'm still researching but Lenovo informs me they've got a sale on
right now http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/x260/
I recommend the X260 as good value with decent specs. The carbon is
attractive but expensive.

Please check your pricing yourself, I can't guarantee what I've said
below as I'm in a rush. My basic aim was an i5 machine and if laptop
13" or under, but looking for really fast SSD.

The Dell XPS13 is a great contender as a laptop that will run Ubuntu
with a Skylake i5 or i7 processor. I'd prefer the Dell XPS13 to the
X260. The Dell XPS13 DE is a great option and great value considering
the build quality.

If you're prepared to go up to AU$2,000 including shipping there are
nice options with the i5 or i7 and up to 16GB RAM and a plain M.2 or
even PCiE SSD, however, it's hard to confirm PCiE SSDs read write
speeds.

The System76 Lemur is looking great from that perspective. You can't
get an i5 but you can go i7, 16GB RAM, and it has a fast SSD, so few
complaints on the specs, although in comparison to the Dell XPS13
build quality it won't be able to beat the robust solid aluminium
body. I prefer the i5 because it has the same power consumption
(quiet / cool) as the i3. The i7 goes up a step in power consumption
and presumably heat and noise.

Looking at Meerkat and Intel NUC compact desktops you can get more for
your dollar if you're prepared to leave the laptop configuration
behind. Here in AU you can't beat an Intel NUC
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/34899/intel-nuc6i5syh-core-i5-nuc-barebone-kit

The Meerkat costs more, especially considering shipping, and you don't
really get the best specs as the SSD is basic, whereas if you shop for
an Intel NUC in AU you can choose a rocket ship SSD and memory for a
tad over AU$1,000.

If you want a 6i7 in the NUC it looks like you have to get one with a
skull on it, sorry about that.

Re: No Ubuntu Laptops available in AU (Paul Gear)

2016-06-21 Thread Anil Gulati
Thanks Paul.

I checked out Lenovo X260 and X1 Carbon. X260 much better value.
Sellers obviously restricting models to 8GB and forcing you up the
processor and feature / price line to get 16GB. I prefer 6i5 processor
because 6i7 takes more power and heat but I want 16GB RAM.

I can't see how Lenovo competes. The much cheaper x260 is a better
choice for me than the X1 but Dell XPS13, if I can get it, is even
better and still cheaper.

But I want a fast PCiE NVMe M.2 SSD and the Lenovo's are all still on
the rock bottom 520 MB/s read and 260 MB/s write level. Even the X1
high spec over $2k model doesn't specify the speed specs on its PCiE
SSD which is suspicious, especially as all the others are slow dogs.

Lenovo does say X1 and X260 are Linux compatible and provides
reference for drivers, but Dell XPS13 (if I can get it) ships with
Linux installed.

MariaC: Thank you for choosing Lenovo Chat.
Anil Gulati: I'm looking at the X260 and the X1 Carbon and hoping to
see the specs shipped with Linux installed.
MariaC: I understand Anil in this case, you can configure the linux
but, the option is not pre installed in our models for the moment this
options is not available
Anil Gulati: Ok. Lenovo doesn't sell Linux?
MariaC: for the moment we do not have this option available
Anil Gulati: Can you specify Linux compatibility for any models and
the X1 and X260 in particular?
MariaC: Im checking right now, and its compatible with ThinkPad X260
systems and ThinkPad X1 Carbon Anil
Anil Gulati: Oh Cool, so Lenovo confirms that I can run Linux on those models?
MariaC: yes Anil
Anil Gulati: Is there a link where I can get resources? Maybe I need
to download drivers or something? And can I purchase a model without
paying for Windows or do I have to buy Windows as well?
MariaC: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd031426 Linux for
Personal Systems
MariaC: you can check the linux certifications there
Anil Gulati: Great Maria, this is good. Can I purchase without Windows
or do I have to pay for Windows as well?
MariaC: the windows is pre installed
MariaC: csama...@lenovo.com #2900721439

I'll take a look at Mac price / value but I'm starting to want the
solid aluminium Dell XPS13, but I still don't have figures on how fast
the SSD is or what it will take to obtain one in AU.

Re: No Ubuntu Laptops available in AU

2016-06-20 Thread Lorn Potter
Hi,

I bought a Dell Inspiron 7359 and just put my own Ubuntu on it. Works fine.
I also did that with a Lenovo Carbon X1.
Both these companies do not seem to sell Ubuntu version of hardware here
in Australia.

You can go to http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/
and see what hardware is certified to run Ubuntu. No guarantees that the
downloaded version of Ubuntu has all the proper hardware drivers
(vendors can often ship proprietary hardware drivers with the laptop).
If you can find a similar variety that only comes with Windows, it would
probably run Ubuntu just fine.

System76 will ship to .au, but it's pricey (so is shipping).

There are a few overseas companies that sell and ship Ubuntu laptops to
.au, but the shipping price kills it for me.

Rhys,

If the worst comes to the worst you could install your Ubuntu is a Virtual
Box running under Windows.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html

I went in the opposite direction, running WinXP in a VB under Linux for the
one Windows program that I once needed.

Good luck,

Good evening Ali,

Unfortunately only IRC Council Members can authorise the cloak (not sure
why, I'm sure there is a reason) as per the wiki page [1]. Your best bet is
to just make your request in -irc as you have and lurk in there until
someone comes along. If you're still struggling emailing the IRC Council is
probably best, their contact information is on their Launchpad page [2].

Re: Photo application for Ubuntu

2014-12-04 Thread Geoffrey Combes
Thank you Samps, Paul and Jared. I have loaded the GIMP plug-in
suggested by Samps. It all worked and I immediately used it too reduce a
block of photos for a club newsletter that I edit. As this newsletter is
primarily distributed as a PDF file sent by email (and read on a
monitor) the PDF file size must be kept down. Hence the need to reduce a
1Mb camera photo to, say 100kb. The facility to modify the image file
name as well was useful.

I have noted Phatch too for future reference.

So then:
sudo rm *3.13.0-32*

I'd suggest you remove all but the newest 2 kernels.
Once done, finish by:
sudo update grub

It is an international community project to reach out to Windows XP

needs more love and more active contributors. If I will manage to get

If this is still confusing, I'm here to answer any Q :)

But it is just a project, not a system (OS). I appreciate if we could

directed to the StartUbuntu Wiki Page :)

I am asking for your help :)
Ubuntu GNOME is a fine and decent system. I have put so much efforts
into this project since I have joined back in July, 2013 after I quit
Lubuntu (2 years with Lubuntu).

I have personally done a lot for the projects I contribute to and with

I'd suggest also to include Ubuntu GNOME to that site ;)
I am one of the main leaders of Ubuntu GNOME and the other leader is
based in Australia as well so both of us are in Australia and another
active member of our community is here as well. So, 3 people from Ubuntu
GNOME are based in Australia, physically. I'd appreciate if Ubuntu GNOME
could be included as well. Also, I am offering my full help and support
to any FLOSS project :)

It might also be worth adding:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu

Just a banner. StartUbuntu is a project that all the flavors are
included. If truth to be told, only Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME
have participated to that project but after all, all the official
flavors are involved and it is to promote the use of Ubuntu and its
official flavor world wide instead of Microsoft Windows.

If there is anything I could do or Ubuntu GNOME community could do,
please let us know, Peter :)

Apologies, the only emails I can find are those sent to the list and
included me as well so didn't think it was aimed at me directly.

As for the loco we currently have no one with the time to regularly spend
organising events, most of us all seem to have started studying all around
the same time. However we do have a number of people who have done so in
the past and can provide assist on the list if anyone is interested in
organising something. As always anyone is able to organise an event for the
LoCo, there are no special permissions required. The recommended method is
to communicate it to the mailing list and pop it up on the loco team portal
[1] so that others know it is going to happen. I'm always more than willing
to provide any input and assistance for any type of LoCo event that people
would like to run. We do have LoCo resources as well to support any events
that need it.

Let me know if I can assist further, happy to do what I can.

Re: Translating Ubuntu for phones into English (Australia) by RTM

2014-07-20 Thread Joel Addison
Hi everyone,

It is great to see so many people getting involved with the en_AU translations
again!

I thought I would let you know of some resources we made up a while ago, which
can be quite useful when doing translations through Launchpad. You can use
these in Chrome/Chromium or Firefox with Greasmonkey/Scriptish/etc.

The first is a script that will allow you to change how many strings are
displayed to translate at a time. By default you will see 10 strings at a time,
but we found this a bit slow, so the script here will change that to display 40
strings at a time. You can adjust that number in the script. Note though that
we did find there could be a higher chance of getting a Timeout error on
Launchpad with a higher number of strings, so just play around with it until
you find a good number (and remember to refresh the page, because that normally
fixes it). The script can be found here:
http://joeladdison.com/stuff/launchpad_translate_batchsize.user.js

The second script is more useful. It takes information from the Word
Substitution list that David linked to, and puts this right next to each
string, if it detects a word that needs to be translated. This is based on a
script that the en_GB team wrote a while ago, but we have made some adjustments
to it. You can find this script at
http://joeladdison.com/stuff/translation_suggestions_en_au.user.js

David linked to a page that has the en_AU stats for Utopic listed
(http://projects.davidplanella.org/stats/utopic/en_AU). This is really useful
to see what is still left to translate, and the graph is a nice reminder of
what the status is - Thanks David! I have a similar page available showing the
history of en_AU translations for several versions of Ubuntu, but for the
desktop translations instead of mobile apps. If you would like to get involved
with translating the desktop apps, and would like to see a graph of the
progress, then feel free to check out
http://joeladdison.com/ubuntu/translation/trusty/en_AU/translated (change
‘trusty’ in the url to be the version you would like). Utopic status should
start coming through from today - I had forgotten to enable it before now.

If you have any questions about the translation, keep asking away on the
mailing list, or you will find also me (jea) and a few others on the ubuntu-au
IRC channel (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/IRC).

Thanks,
Joel

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 application launching problem

2014-05-16 Thread Geoffrey Combes
The launching problem experienced was induced, I am fairly sure, by a PC
hardware defect and the software issue solved by installing 14.04LTS.
But not before the hardware caused numerous shutdowns. Initially I
installed 14.04 on-line. The download went effortlessly but the
subsequent upgrade was terminated prematurely by a PC shutdown, the
first of many. This left the system installed without any launching
panel icons or applets at the top. The OS worked but could only be used
from the folders on the desktop, a strange situation. I replaced the RAM
(carefully) and this action seems to have stopped the unscheduled
hardware shutdowns. That fixed I bought a 14.04LTS 32 bit disk from
Peter Baker who responded immediately (thanks Peter) and installation
occurred without a hitch.
Incidentally I find 14.04 very good with a few noticeable and useful
improvements. It is by far the best at connecting with my Internet
provider (Telstra) via the little 4G mobile modem. I couple the modem to
a home-made double-quad antenna tuned and adjusted for 3G's 850 MHz. It
boosts the RF signal by about 5dB and ensures fast transfer of data.
I installed 14.04 by choosing the 'erase disk' option which meant that I
had to re-install quite a few applications (such as Scribus and Bluefish
which I use a lot). But this is good as I got updates. I also took the
opportunity to switch Mailing from Evolution to Thunderbird.
Meanwhile I continue to urge others to try Ubuntu, not with much
responding interest I have to say.

I upgraded directly from 12.04 to 14.04 and it when very smoothly. I was
surprised to see that even my wallpaper remained the same after the
upgrade.

See for the steps to kick of the upgrade:

This fault occurred a few days ago out-of the-blue, that is, seemingly
unprovoked. It has prevented launching any applications other than those
(with one exception as described below) that happen to be among the
launching icons on the LHS of screen. The two abnormalities are:
 1. Dash Home will not list any applications nor find any.
 2. Ubuntu Software Centre will not launch from the side icon providing
only a blank screen and then, upon closing the window, leaving a message
saying that it is not responding.
Notes: Dash Home searches for and finds Files and Folders, Music and
 DVDs (but not applications).
I have the home directory saved on an external hard drive (I use
 Grsync).
By chance I have Byobu Terminal in the launching panel (and it
 launches).

My question is: What is the best way of restoring proper operation. For
example, if it is best to upgrade, should I go straight to 14.04 from a
disk or upgrade sequentially to 14.04 as I did to get 12.04 (or doesn't
it matter which way)? Or, can I do something from Byobu Terminal.
 Thanks,

Potential job for a Ubuntu System Admin

2014-01-19 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Hi all,

I'm looking for someone with skills in Ubuntu System Administration, custom
ISO generation, Ubuntu/Debian packaging, server and package testing, and
optionally C and/or Perl development for a potential job at my work.

One of our products is a large server appliance written in C, Perl, and
PHP, and built on Ubuntu Server. It is manually packaged into an ISO and
Update file, using some complex custom bash scripts - which as you can
imagine is a pain to maintain. I'm looking for someone who can turn our
custom scripts and hacks into a proper deployment method that can be easily
upgraded as new versions of Ubuntu are released. Part of the job could also
be maintaining some of our low-level scripts that power the core of the
application, which are written in C and Perl.

The position hasn't been confirmed, but a large part of getting it approved
is finding someone with the skills we need. It would be a work from home
job, unless you're located in Adelaide (where the office is).

Reply to me directly if you're interested or would like more information.

Thanks,
~Stephen

P.s. Please let me know if this sort of post is not allowed on this mailing
list, and I won't mention it again.

1. Switch on your computer.
2. Wait until the BIOS has finished loading, or has almost finished. (During
this time you will probably see a logo of your computer manufacturer.)
3. Quickly press and hold the Shift key, which will bring up the GNU GRUB menu.
(If you see the Ubuntu logo, you've missed the point where you can enter the
GRUB menu.)

4. Select the line which starts with Advanced options.

5. Select the line ending with (recovery mode), probably the second line,
something like:

Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.8.0-26-generic (recovery mode)

6. Press Return and your machine will begin the boot process.

7. After a few moments, your workstation should display a menu with a number of
options. One of the options (you may need to scroll down to the bottom of the
list) will be pbkg. Press Return with this option highlighted.

Re: Ubuntu-AU - Team Meeting

2013-05-10 Thread Jared Norris
Good afternoon all,

Just to let everyone know I've added an agenda item to the meeting
regarding re-approval. It will be coming up in the Saucy cycle so we need
to start thinking about if we want to see re-approval or not. At our
current level of activity I'd suggest we are unlikely to obtain
re-approval. But I believe by mentioning it now if there are people who
want to drive some local activity they can turn this around before the
re-approval date.

Unfortunately I will be unable to make tomorrow nights meeting due to prior
commitments but wanted to start getting people to think about this. I am
more than willing to help people know what is needed to and help guide them
through if there are people willing to do so.

Fwd: Ubuntu Global Jam (S-Series) Announcement

2013-03-28 Thread Jared Norris

Greetings Ubuntu World,

There will be Jam!

We are planning our next Ubuntu Global Jam (for the S series release) to
occur on:

Friday September 13, 2013
Saturday September 14, 2013
Sunday September 15, 2013

Please mark your calendars and tell everyone you know to *start planning
now*. Please put a placeholder on your calendars and also at:

http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/2315/

(Friendly suggestion: Do not let other events or activities
interfere with that weekend! Jam instead :)

Please reach out to people in your communities and think about what
you'd like to do at an event: Packaging, testing, translations,
documentation, advertising/marketing, building community through social
events... everything is welcome! No jam is too small. No idea is too
wacky... and jam tastes great! ;)

Good documentation about how to create a successful Global Jam event is
here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

A short video explaining the most basic steps is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITk8PGBkMXQ

With over 5 months of advance notice, we should be able to make this
Ubuntu Global Jam a really big and fun one! Can we set a record?

Thanks in advance for jamming.

Cheers,
Randall
Global Jam Buzz Guy.

PS: Now all we need is an adjective and an animal beginning with S

Ubuntu 12.10, separate drive to Win - manual partitioning, feedback please

2013-02-23 Thread David
Hi,

I've googled and read, and again, and as a newbie to partitioning am
going to take the plunge and install Ubuntu 12.10 by partitioning
manually during install.
Please let me know what you think of the following:
I have Windows already on sdc, plus a free 500Gb hdd (sdb) for extra
storage, plus a 1.5Tb drive solely for Ubuntu (showing up as sda).
I am planning to have mount points for root and home, will give home
30Gb (though I prob'ly won't end up installing anything like that much
in programs).
Both of those will be primary, and located at 'beginning', and file
system ext4.
I will tell it to put the boot loader on sda [the Ubuntu drive]. (And
I'll adjust drive boot order in BIOS.)
Q: swap area: I have 4Gb RAM - should I give 4Gb or 8Gb to swap area?
Q: Should swap area be located at 'beginning' or 'end' of its
partition? Swap area will be 'logical'.
Q: Should shared 500Gb storage drive be ntfs or FAT32?

12.10 doesn't seem to allow an automatic install onto a separate drive
in a dual-drive machine - I seem to remember that was possible with the
installer for 10.04. So I am hoping I can do the partitioning for the
first time.

Thanks for your time,

Dave

A couple of little thoughts.
Are you sure Windows is on sdc?  Windows tends to get pretty upset
if it isn't on partition 1, disk 1.30 Gig sounds like a lot for /home,
but remember that by defaults all your video, pictures, music and
downloads will try and land there.I'm afraid I can't help with the
more complicated bits.

Fwd: Re: Ubuntu 12.10, separate drive to Win - manual partitioning, feedback please

2013-02-23 Thread David
Thanks Bevin.

There's the 2TB drive listed as dev/sdc, then dev/sdc1 listed as
'Windows boot loader', and then dev/sdc2. The 2TB Windows drive was put
in the computer first and the 1.5 TB drive for Ubuntu was added later.
In Windows disk management the 2TB drive is listed as disk0, then the
500Gb one as disk1, and the 1.5TB one as disk2.

30Gb for home: have I maybe got things the wrong way round - should it
be a 10-30 Gb allocation for /root, and all the rest of the disk given
over to /home except for the swap area?

Fwd: Second Call For Ubuntu Global Jam Events

2013-02-19 Thread Jared Norris
Just another quick reminder about the upcoming global jam and to see if
anyone wanted to be involved in anything. It also has a good link to a
video about Ubuntu for phones and tablets that's worth a look.

Subject: Second Call For Ubuntu Global Jam Events
To: loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hi LoCo people around the world,

The Ubuntu Global Jam (RR edition) will occur March 1-3, 2013.

We have some teams that have registered already but we need *every* team
to register to make this the biggest and best Ubuntu Global Jam ever!
Please take a moment now and go to the registration page and add your event:

(Even if you haven't finalized all the details for your event, you can
still register it. And, when others in your community see an event on
calendar they might just step up to help out with the last-minute details.)

Ideas:

1) With the recent announcements about Ubuntu Phone and Ubuntu Tablet,
consider using this Jam as an opportunity to try them out. Bring your
hardware and show others, even (and especially) people who have never
seen Ubuntu on these form factors.

2) Consider doing some testing. Ubuntu always benefits from the extra
energy the community invests in making sure Ubuntu is as solid and
bug-free as possible.

3) Simply have fun! Jams don't have to be all work and no play. Some
teams just get together to build community and strengthen friendships. A
stronger local community makes Ubuntu better!

More ideas, tips, and tricks for hosting (or attending) a successful Jam
can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITk8PGBkMXQ

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out and
ask me. I'm here to help!

Cheers,
Randall

Personally I use the AARNet mirror [1] because as a Telstra home
broadband user it's downloads are unmetered and as an added bonus it
also has great download speeds. The list of different types of 12.10
releases are available in their own folder [2]. And to make life
easier I've included direct links to the 32 bit version [3] as well as
the 64 bit version [4] so just feel free to grab whichever you need.
If you need help installing it from the downloaded ISO the official

What kind of graphics card do you have? You may be better off installing
the proprietary drivers if you havent already.

 Hi,

since I downloaded the latest version I have a white rectangle over the
left hand side of the screen.? I have tried everything I know such as the
Display tool and changing resolution or auto-detect displays to no avail..
If I put the mouse over the white space where I know a menu or control is
the software reacts appropriately but it is flying blind.? Any thoughts
 would be gratefully received.

For a while it showed laptop as the system type and that took a bit of
fiddling to get rid of too

+1 - or turn them off if you've already installed them. This really
smacks of a driver problem. Also looking at backports for updated xorg*
or linux-image* packages might be worthwhile.

Awesome work Peter! I'm sure it's really handy for a lot of people on
very limited internet connections.

I should also mention I've applied for the usual loco pack of
official, pressed discs from Canonical. Im not sure the number
they'll send out this release but if anyone has any ideas how to
effectively distribute them in ways that will benefit the community
please let us know. We did well with the 12.04, nearly all the CDs
were distributed, let's try to do as well with 12.10.

Fwd: Quantal- Ubuntu 12.10 Release party

2012-09-27 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

It's that time in the cycle again, that's right, Release Time! As
usual, if anyone is contemplating holding a release party now is the
time to speak up so we can help you prepare for it if necessary. I've
forwarded on the notice that was sent to the loco-contacts mailing
list for your information. The basics are:
* pick a time
* pick a place
* document it on the loco portal
* email the list
* attend and have fun with other local Ubuntu users

It's that simple. I think we should aim to see if we can get one in
all the major cities this release if we can, that would be awesome.

As always, sing out if you have any questions. I will not be directly
organising one myself this release to allow someone else to come along
and have a turn up here in Brisbane while I am furiously studying.
I'll do my best to come along as long as it's not on an assessment
day.

The 12.10 release party event has been added to the loco team portal -
If you'd like to add your team there that would be great! Many teams
have some form of a party, pizza, talks, geeknics, if you have ideas
why not share them here to give others some ideas on what you do! it's
up to you! Just have fun and celebrate 12.10 and share Ubuntu with
your friends.

Hi Juan

The number 1 possibility is that your path does not reference the location
of the gcc executable.

So do an echo $PATH (as root, logged in as the root user or via su - (with
dash -)).. The $PATH is a list of directories that will be searched for
executable programs.

ok do a which gcc? does anything get returned?

If not (or gcc -v does not work as root). do a slocate -u and then locate
gcc (or a cd / ; find ./ -name gcc).

If gcc is on your system like in /usr/whatever/sbin/gcc you can add it to
your path. PATH=$PATH:/usr/whatever/sbin Keep in mind any executable files
in that directory will be executed. (this wont survive a reboot).

If gcc is not on your system. Then you need to either install it or
reinstall it.

apt-file search filename

apt-file search /path/to/file

quote

http://superuser.com/questions/10997/find-what-package-a-file-belongs-to-in-ubuntu-debian;

once you know the package. apt-get install --reinstall packagename

Good luck.

2012-08-26 Thread Juan Pablo Quiroga
Heya Guys,

I hope your weekend would have been great,

Guys, I'm having some issues with my gcc. I'm running a new backup solution
for that server but it can't be updated to a new Ubuntu versions so having
said that, when I run gcc -v -- No command found and I gave a try to
install it again apt-get install gcc -- the package has already been
installed, I'm not sure why I'm having this behaviour, please advise.

Cheers,

Ok, everyone who has requested CDs should have them in a day or two, I
finally made it to the post office today. Please let me know if there
are any issues. There are plenty more up for grabs for those of you
thinking about it. The only requirement for me sending them out is
that you have to report back to the team on how you used them. A
website article, some photos or even a loco.ubuntu.com event would be
the suggested ways. Not too much to ask for free pressed CDs!

Feel free to ping me off list if you're not sure and want to ask more questions.

I'd just like to add one little thing for those who've already
contacted me. In return for sending the CDs out I ask a small favour
in return. All I would like to see is that you provide some return to
the community as to what you have done with the CDs. If it's just to
hand out at work, school or uni take a photo of the poster you put up
with them to take with a little story about any anecdotes you have
from the interaction. I don't think this is too much to ask for the
good will of Canonical shipping them to us. We can use these on the
website to share the news with the world. If you're not comfortable
writing the article, shoot an email to the mailing list and we can
turn it into an article for you.

If you're planning a public event (uni open day, community hall
gathering, etc) and want more than a handful please make it into a
loco.u.c event so we can all join in, and who knows you might find
someone else in your area to help you out.

If you want to contribute to the shipping please feel free to use
paypal to send money to the email address that I've sent this from.

2012-05-18 Thread Chris Robinson
Hi Jared,

I'd like to take 10 please.  I've managed to get people at work and a few
others to take Ubuntu seriously.  I'm quite happy to re-imburse the postage
costs - I don't think you should be out of pocket for that.

I think we should organise a workshop in Brisbane soon, if possible.  We're
already well into May, so maybe July or August is a possibility?

Ubuntu Manual @ UDS

2012-05-09 Thread Joel Pickett
Hi all,

I'm in a session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit about the Ubuntu
Manual http://ubuntu-manual.org/ which you may remember was started
some time ago with the goal of producing a high quality pdf (and
printed) manual for Ubuntu desktop.

They are looking for new blood to help author and edit the manual for
12.04 to be released around the time of 12.04.1 (July 19th). However
we're trying to figure out why we don't have more contributors and
what may be holding people back.

So my question to you is:-

If you have considered contributing to Ubuntu Manual, but haven't,
what's stopped you?

Some reasons might include:-

* Lack of time
* Lack of motivation
* Lack of skill
* Difficult to use tools

Or something we're missing. We'd really like to know in case it's
something we can fix. If you're interested in contributing, please do
let us know, and we can help you get involved.

Cheers,

Joel Pickett (in the style of Alan Pope)!

Ubuntu Manual - Joel version

2012-05-09 Thread Joel Pickett
Hi,

I've just had a session at UDS and we really need to ramp up on the
author/editor side of the Ubuntu Manual. I'd like to hold an online
session @ 2pm NSW/QLD/VIC/TAS Saturday 19th May to target some of the
areas that need work. A significant portion of the Manual can be left
as-in and thus needs basic proof-reading to check if certain terms or
screenshots need to be updated.

The ubuntu manual is on launchpad at lp:ubuntu-manual, only a couple
of megabytes to download.

If you have an hour or so on that Saturday free, please come along to
#ubuntu-au on irc.freenode.net

Thanks,

Joel Pickett

March team report - Ubuntu-AU

2012-04-04 Thread Joel Pickett
Hi all (I hope the formatting is OK),

There were a few things that were happening in March for Ubuntu-AU:

   - The March IRC meeting was held on the 11th March and attended by 9
   people.
   -

   JoelPickett https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JoelPickett and
JoelAddisonhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/JoelAddison held
events on the weekend of the
UbuntuGlobalJamhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam.
The events included: translation, wiki clean-up, localisation and artwork
   jam
   - the translation jam aimed to fix up strings that had been
mistranslated and to tackle some of the en_AU packages on Launchpad
  -

the wiki jam had participants cleaning up and updating the subpages
  of the AustralianTeam https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam wiki
  - the localisation jam finalised the iso defaults for the en_AU
  Ubuntu CD
  - the artwork jam encouraged participants to create Ubuntu materials
  - including posters, flyers and other Ubuntu-related artwork
   -

Two release parties have been set for the
PrecisePangolinhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin cycle.
Sydney is hosting an event on the Saturday, 21st April and Brisbane on the
6th May. Details for these events can be found at: ubuntu-au loco

Re: Videos appear a black box and won't play in ubuntu 11.10

2012-02-25 Thread Chris Robinson
Is this with Firefox?  It sounds like a flash problem.  I can highly recommend
installing the flash-aid add-on in Firefox and letting it do its thing.  It
will install the correct version of flash for the version of Firefox and the
OS, removing any conflicting versions in the process.  After it has run a
restart of Firefox will be required.

There have been a lot of Firefox updates recently.  Most likely something got
broken along the way.
