I'm still researching but Lenovo informs me they've got a sale on

I recommend the X260 as good value with decent specs. The carbon is
attractive but expensive.

Please check your pricing yourself, I can't guarantee what I've said
below as I'm in a rush. My basic aim was an i5 machine and if laptop
13" or under, but looking for really fast SSD.

The Dell XPS13 is a great contender as a laptop that will run Ubuntu
with a Skylake i5 or i7 processor. I'd prefer the Dell XPS13 to the
X260. The Dell XPS13 DE is a great option and great value considering
the build quality.

If you're prepared to go up to AU$2,000 including shipping there are
nice options with the i5 or i7 and up to 16GB RAM and a plain M.2 or
even PCiE SSD, however, it's hard to confirm PCiE SSDs read write
speeds.

The System76 Lemur is looking great from that perspective. You can't
get an i5 but you can go i7, 16GB RAM, and it has a fast SSD, so few
complaints on the specs, although in comparison to the Dell XPS13
build quality it won't be able to beat the robust solid aluminium
body.  I prefer the i5 because it has the same power consumption
(quiet / cool) as the i3. The i7 goes up a step in power consumption
and presumably heat and noise.

Looking at Meerkat and Intel NUC compact desktops you can get more for
your dollar if you're prepared to leave the laptop configuration
behind. Here in AU you can't beat an Intel NUC

The Meerkat costs more, especially considering shipping, and you don't
really get the best specs as the SSD is basic, whereas if you shop for
an Intel NUC in AU you can choose a rocket ship SSD and memory for a
tad over AU$1,000.

If you want a 6i7 in the NUC it looks like you have to get one with a
skull on it, sorry about that.

Thanks Paul.

I checked out Lenovo X260 and X1 Carbon. X260 much better value.
Sellers obviously restricting models to 8GB and forcing you up the
processor and feature / price line to get 16GB. I prefer 6i5 processor
because 6i7 takes more power and heat but I want 16GB RAM.

I can't see how Lenovo competes. The much cheaper x260 is a better
choice for me than the X1 but Dell XPS13, if I can get it, is even
better and still cheaper.

But I want a fast PCiE NVMe M.2 SSD and the Lenovo's are all still on
the rock bottom 520 MB/s read and 260 MB/s write level. Even the X1
high spec over $2k model doesn't specify the speed specs on its PCiE
SSD which is suspicious, especially as all the others are slow dogs.

Lenovo does say X1 and X260 are Linux compatible and provides
reference for drivers, but Dell XPS13 (if I can get it) ships with
Linux installed.

I asked about worldwide availability of laptops shipping with Ubuntu in
a recent company videoconference in Canonical.  The short version is
that although we have ongoing relationships with both Dell and Lenovo,
the hardware vendors control the availability of the resultant systems.

I have not seen any of the results of these relationships appear on
either vendor's Australian site.  I'd also really like to get my hands
on an Ubuntu phone and/or tablet, but they're not available here either.

My subjective opinion (without having gathered precise data) is that
most folks in Canonical run Lenovo ThinkPads (T4xx and X2xx are the most
popular series), with Dell XPS (our CEO, Jane, runs a Dell shipped with
Ubuntu [1]) and Apple in 2nd & 3rd.  I currently use a ThinkPad X230,
but will probably switch to the latest T4x0 model on my next refresh.

Both Dell and Lenovo are pretty compulsive about asking you to fill out
a survey about why you visited their site and how you liked it.  One
useful thing you could do would be to add a comment stating that you'd
like to buy your laptop with Ubuntu.

Hi,

I bought a Dell Inspiron 7359 and just put my own Ubuntu on it. Works fine.
I also did that with a Lenovo Carbon X1.
Both these companies do not seem to sell Ubuntu version of hardware here
in Australia.

You can go to http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/
and see what hardware is certified to run Ubuntu. No guarantees that the
downloaded version of Ubuntu has all the proper hardware drivers
(vendors can often ship proprietary hardware drivers with the laptop).
If you can find a similar variety that only comes with Windows, it would
probably run Ubuntu just fine.

System76 will ship to .au, but it's pricey (so is shipping).

There are a few overseas companies that sell and ship Ubuntu laptops to
.au, but the shipping price kills it for me.

But then I hesitated because if I get a laptop I can be mobile, I'm not
dependent on having a monitor and keyboard set up somewhere.
But who sells Linux laptops in Australia, or even the world?

After slowly researching for months I'm now of the opinion that I should
only buy from System 76 or Zareason, because all the main stream suppliers
are lame.

There was news in Jan/Feb that woo hoo the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition
("the world's best Windows laptop") was available with Ubuntu, nice high
spec and slim form factor. The news article said that Dell is selling the
5th gen CPUs at a discount because Skylake was coming. It's selling it like
there's a channel and a market and waiting list.

Getting on to Dell.com.au I can indeed find an XPS 13 Developer Edition but
it says no longer available, and click through to the replacement provides
Windows 10 only. Vapourware.

Amazingly, after getting on to Dell chat, it took two operators over half
an hour to admit there was another Dell Linux laptop available
http://pilot.search.dell.com/precision, Ubuntu of course, but at around
$3000 for 6i5 16GB RAM and no specs on the speed of the 1TB SSD were

would come from US anyway.

According to ZaReason, they are planning on setting up stores in 
different countries (http://zareason.com/shop/International.html) and 
although we aren't on their list of initial sites, we could also 
hope/offer to have one of their stores over here. Although I don't know 
where they are up to with getting the stores up and running. An NZ might 
even be able to service us over here anyway.

From what I've heard, they have a good reputation in the Ubuntu community.

Annoyingly, my laptop died this morning... so I am now in the market for 
a new one. But I am looking at getting another ThinkPad (probably the 
T420), since my last two have been ThinkPads (R40 & T61) and they've 
been fantastic. Although, I'm a little worried about hardware support 
since the certification page says "Pre-Installed only", but Ubuntu isn't 
an option in the lenovo order form.

now, I hope to do something in the future but I have seen so many linux
stores come and go it's unreal, I think I'll wait until I can find a niche
that will stand the test of time before running into it.

http://www.system76.com/ to start selling laptops in Australia.
A dedicated linux/Ubuntu computer maker will provide better hardware
and support than an online retailer who sells lots of different stuff.

I also dont know any laptops that dont come with Windows.  My Dell 
Vostro works great with Hardy though if your looking at one with a video

I second that, got one here running well ... even with the n capable
wifi.  I would recommend a fast CPU and then using the alternate
installer CD to setup a crypto root for security.

btw word is that the new Dell Lattitude E Series will be released in the
first half of August, so get in now if you want a D830.
