Precisely. I imagine that this would have occurred because Pacific or
AARNet or whoever else last hosted the mirror requested that they no
longer be pointed at. Alternatively, the Canonical mirror admins might
have decided that the service provided by the old mirror was inadequate
(out of date, often down, etc.)

It's rather sad that this is happening here, but it's the same even in
the US... Lots of the more obscure countries have wonderful local mirrors!

I would think intrepid release is the perfect moment to *not* point
everything back to the primary datacentre.

au.archive.ubuntu.com - not in Australia today

2008-10-30 Thread Daniel Mons
Last month, "au.archive.ubuntu.com" pointed to the AARNet mirror, hosted
in Canberra:

http://geotool.servehttp.com/?host=mirror.aarnet.edu.au

(Interestingly enough, all of Optus' "mirror" servers point there too).

Today it points back to Ubuntu's web HQ in England:

http://geotool.servehttp.com/?ip=91.189.88.31
http://geotool.servehttp.com/?ip=91.189.88.45
http://geotool.servehttp.com/?ip=91.189.88.46

I understand that with the release of Intrepid there are other issues to
contend with (synchronisation with upstream, catering for the bandwidth
demand, etc), but I'm a little disappointed that it has been done this
way. Lets hope it returns soon to an Australian mirror soon.

Those of you who understand how to hack your /etc/apt/sources.list, I'd
suggest manually pointing back to an Aussie mirror (and one hosted by
your ISP and/or ISP-peer) if you don't feel like seeing your packages
trickle down the wire.
