[Bug 120569] Re: [gutsy] gtkspell segfaults when trying to set the language on gtk.TextView

2008-02-09 Thread Hanno Stock
I am not an expert, but I do think this is a gnome-python-extras bug. A python
object should live as long as there are any references held to it.
In this case the Spell object still holds a reference to the TextView object.
So the Spell object should increase the reference counter on the TextView.

The C GtkSpell itself is not designed to live without a corresponding
TextView. (gtkspell_detach even destroys the GtkSpell C object)
One could argue about the approach used in gtkspell but as of now most of the
functions depend on the view. The change suggested by Gustavo Carneiro would
make gtkspell more robust against such situations, but I think it's a bigger
change.

In the test script above, if done correctly, the TextView would be
destroyed automatically, when the GtkSpell object is destroyed. After
the last line there is no reference hold to the GtkSpell object anymore
and the GC would destroy them both.

Philipp Kern: I would be interested in your code that tried to fix the
issue in gnome-python-extras.

( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-

Hi everybody,

I have a problem whch seems to be the same.

I have an old computer with an old computer with an Intel
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device, and the X
server won't launch.

It tries and tries again, but my CRT screen won't turn on.

I have read all the comments and they seem to say that it has been
fixed, but it still does not work for me in Hardy Alpha 4. It only works
when I boot in safe graphic mode.

The only distribution that work without any problem (out of the box) for
me is Mandriva 2008, and yes, 16bit depth is automatically forced, but
everything works fine, compiz-fusion too.

Here is my xorg.conf file from Mandriva 2008 (see original post for the
file).

[Bug 190453] [NEW] fdisk sees too many partitions

2008-02-09 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: util-linux

Fdisk from util-linux 2.13.1-1ubuntu1 in the current Hardy snapshot sees
many more partitions than actually exist. This may not be a bug in fdisk
as there it definitely something odd about the partition table on that
harddisk. Both the Hardy and Vista installers claim that the harddisk
contains only unpartitioned space. However I recall that Dapper through
Fiesty had no difficulty with the partition table, so this appears to be
some form of regression. Additionally, since different Linux utilities
see different numbers of partitions, it would seem feasible to detect
the inconsistency and warn that bad stuff may occur (and perhaps even
offer to fix  it).

The existing partitions, as reported by ls /dev/sda?* are
/dev/sda1  /dev/sda10  /dev/sda11  /dev/sda12  /dev/sda13  /dev/sda14
/dev/sda15  /dev/sda2  /dev/sda5  /dev/sda6  /dev/sda7  /dev/sda8  /dev/sda9

The output from fdisk is as follows:
--

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop/atl2-2.0.4$ sudo fdisk /dev/sda

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 14596.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Warning: omitting partitions after #60.
They will be deleted if you save this partition table.

[Bug 190452] [NEW] Make sure people who tries out Ubuntu, will install and will always use it

2008-02-09 Thread GustavoNarea
Public bug reported:

Some people try out Ubuntu, but won't install it and use it. Sometimes
eye-candyness and user-friendliness are not enough.

If they knew how important GNU/Linux is, and Freedomware in general,
most of them would stick to it.

For this reason, I find it useful for the Ubuntu community to support
www.getgnulinux.org, a website maintained by the non-profit that takes
care of Freedomware marketing. For example, you have the Ubuntu Help
Center and the About Ubuntu applications, where you might point
newcomers to getgnulinux.org if they want to learn about Linux.

This was partially fixed for Kubuntu in Bug #107062.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report and subsequently we are closing it and
converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the

problems you are having in the support tracker at [WWW]

bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see [WWW]

[Bug 190090] Re: jockey blocks loading of the nvidia propriatary driver

2008-02-09 Thread jpr0
I noticed something similar from the live CD. After the live system loaded, I
went to drivers, but then I got an error in jockey.
I'm using the 32-bit version of hardy. I think that the problem I have is
related to the one I already reported (jockey error when the system starts):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey/+bug/190379

I haven't installed this version yet, because if I'm getting errors from
the live CD... it can't be a good omen :)

[Bug 188392] Re: mdam software raid fails to start up on reboot

2008-02-09 Thread Bob McElrath
I just experienced this problem.

Through the md: array md0 already has disks! error. Through the spam,
if you wait 60s (or whatever the timeout is), you will be dropped to the
initramfs shell. You can't see it though through the already has
disks error 100 times per second. But, I typed 'mdadm --stop /dev/md0'
and this stopped the spam! Surprisingly, /dev/md0 existed, and was
fine! (though degraded, but I expected that because one drive had
failed)

To repeat, I ran 'mdadm --stop /dev/md0' and *after* I ran that,
/dev/md0 still existed and was fine.

So, it appears that mdadm is trying to create /dev/md0 *twice* and
obviously fails the second time (repeatedly).

[Bug 190458] [NEW] Firefox display switched to inverse

2008-02-09 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

While trying the current Hardy snapshot liveCD, using firefox 2.0.0.10
+2nobinonly-0ubuntu2, my firefox window suddenly went inverse. I.e.
black became white, red became cyan etc.

A screenshot is available at:
  http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au/~john/bugs/Firefox_inverse.png

This was easy to workaround. Opening a new window (Cntl-N) provided a
window with the correct colors.

Disabling Desktop effects fixed the problem, and the problem did not
reoccur when Desktop effects where re-enabled.

My card supported 3D effects without any setup. It was a i945G:

[Bug 125386] Re: Xchat uses WAY too much RAM

2008-02-09 Thread Tormod Volden
This is maybe another bug but I won't file a new bug before I can
collect some details: I have had xchat-gnome exploding in RAM usage some
times. Unfortunately it goes so fast it's difficult to track down,
within a few seconds it was 640MB and I killed it, another time it made
the computer lock up. This is after opening the Channels window soon
after logging in, and then typing a filter pattern. I will try to send
it a SIGSTOP next time, if I am fast enough.

[Bug 190293] Re: ERROR: uid is 0 but '/' is owned by 1000

2008-02-09 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu even better.
ufw tries to be very careful about its files so that if there are
anomalies in the files or paths, the administrator will be notified
instead of executing potentially unprotected code.

Please do:
$ ls -ld /
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 2008-01-23 18:08 /

If the output does not look like the above, then there is a problem with your
system. You can do:
$ sudo chown root:root /

You should then check the directories under '/' with:
$ ls -ld /*

All of these should be owned by 'root'. If they are not, there is a
more serious problem with your system, and you should probably ask for
help in the support tracker. Please visit
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion'.

I am going to close this report as it does not appear to be a bug in
ufw. If the directories do have proper ownership (ie ufw is complaining
when it shouldn't), please feel free to re-open the bug, along with the
output of 'ls -ld dir', where dir is the directory that ufw is
complaining about.

[Bug 175488] Re: OpenOffice.org Chart -cannot edit chart title

2008-02-09 Thread Rick @ rickandpatty.com
I can reproduce this bug using the OOs 2.3.0 packages provided by
Ubuntu, but I *cannot* reproduce it with the latest OOo 2.3.1 packages
downloaded from www.openoffice.org.

So either this bug *is* Ubuntu-specific, or it's been fixed in 2.3.1.
Another workaround, then, is to install the latest OOo packages from
www.openoffice.org and uninstall the ones provided with Ubuntu. You may
have to use Synaptic to lock the OOo packages at version 2.3.1, or else
the update manager will helpfully try to update your working OOo
packages to the older versions.

[Bug 74070] Re: Google Calendar ics support

I was also having this problem on Gutsy, but I believe I have found the
issue and a workaround. I use a laptop, and when I log in the network
connection is not established. However, if I understand how Evolution
works, the evolution-data-server process is already started and appears
to be retaining the unconfigured network state.

If you open up a terminal and do an evolution --force-shutdown, then
restart evolution while you have a network connection established,
Evolution seems to be able to get to the calendars after that.

[Bug 132039] Re: [gutsy] /etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter exited with return code 2

2008-02-09 Thread dk75
OK. So I will write what's happening.

Everybody, look inside yours /etc/rcS.d directory - which priority have
networking and which firestarter? At my system it is respectively 40 and 65.
It means that first /etc/init.d/networking is running and with that
/etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter which contains /etc/init.d/firetarter
restart.
So, networking scripts trying to restart firestarter daemon but it is not
loaded yet - so it exits with return code 2.
After that feew tings is loaded and then firestarter is loading from system
wide rc.d.

Dirty hack for this is either to change loading priority of networking
to above 65 (which is not wise since it is device and these should be
loaded at least to 40 priority position) or to change loading priority
of firestarter below|to 40 (I don't know if it is wise since not every
devices and filesystems are set and running at the time).

Dirty hack 1:
sudo update-rc.d -f networking remove
sudo update-rc.d networking S 70 .

or

Dirty hack 2:
sudo update-rc.d -f firestarter remove
sudo update-rc.d firestarter S 40 .

[Bug 190465] [NEW] Please sync plptools 0.18-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-02-09 Thread Guillaume Martres
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plptools

Please sync plptools 0.18-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
Ubuntu adds dh_iconcache to debian/rules, Debian now uses dh_icons which has
superseded dh_iconcache so the delta can be dropped.

Changelog since current hardy version 0.15-2ubuntu1:

plptools (0.18-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream version (closes: #390593, #230172)

  * Include Dutch debconf translation (closes: #423051)

I got an zd1211 based usb dongle that had worked out of the box for a
long time (about 2 years).

 Ralink USB dongles are broken out-of-the-box for a long time.

I also got an rt73 based usb dongle that works out of the box correctly
with hardy. With gutsy it works only for some minutes with rt2x00usb module.

[Bug 110178] Re: Please sync imagemagick 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-1 from debian unstable

2008-02-09 Thread Wouter Stomp
It is in debian now. I think the only remaining change in ubuntu was
merged, but I am not completely sure (Magick++/lib/Geometry.cpp: build
fix for g++-4.3.).

Debian changelog:
 imagemagick (7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release (Closes: #339776, #420672, #454809)
 - fixed wrong image size when using montage (Closes: #357013);
 - fixed support for fixed font (Closes: #370309);
 - convert doesn't output grayscale images when using -colors switch
   (Closes: #325828);
 - using a percent sign on a montage label doesn't create a wrong label
   anymore (Closes: #330115);
 - fixed identify -list format (Closes: #337192);
 - fixed composite (Closes: #338109);
 - deffered LZW GIFs are handled correctly (Closes: #340553);
 - display doesn't ignore alpha channel on PNG files anymore
   (Closes: #352748);
 - aspect ratio is preserved when using convert (Closes: #396956);
 - fixed PS to PDF conversion (Closes: #419410);
 - fixed SVG conversion (Closes: #435903);
 - using -trim and -resize together doesn't produce incorrect images
   anymore (Closes: #444058);
 - convert -list doesn't result in glibc malloc failure (Closes: #326566);
 - mogrify doesn't end silently with read only files (Closes: #292520);
 - identify correctly displays the bit depth of an image (Closes: #391983);
 - identify correctly reads files with a colon (Closes: #188834);
 - fixed typo in composite manpage (Closes: #366499);
 - doesn't fail when converting texts (Closes: #361141);
 - fixed conversion of a PNG with transparency to a JPG, using -background
   and -flatten (Closes: #358676);
 - doesn't FTBFS with GCC/G++ 4.3 (Closes: #441538);
   * Enabled DjVu support
   * Acknowledge NMUs (Closes: #394923, #400939, #348576, #245960)
 .
   [ Luciano Bello ]
   * The 'lets start again' release.
   * Quilt implemented.
 - manpages.patch: Replaced 'SEE-ALSO' for 'SEE ALSO' in the manpages.
   Registered input character replaced.
 .
   [ Nelson A. de Oliveira ]
   * Added watch file
   * debian/rules: Fixed debian rules ignores make clean error
   * debian/control:
 - replaced deprecated ${Source-Version} by ${binary:Version}
 - added Homepage field
 - added Vcs-Svn and Vcs-Browser
   * debian/compat: updated to debhelper compatibility level 5
   * Updated menu file
   * Updated Standards Version to 3.7.3
   * Included myself to Uploaders field
 .
   [ Daniel Kobras ]
   * debian/*.{preinst,postinst,prerm}: Removed. Dedicated checks are obsolete
 by now, rest is handled automatically via debhelper these days.
   * debian/control: Prune all references to packages that predate oldstable.
   * debian/control: Move Suggests for delegate packages from imagemagick to
 libmagick10.
   * debian/control: Follow renaming of package gs to ghostscript, promote
 from Suggests to Recommends, and also recommend gsfonts.
   * debian/control: Update graphviz (build-)dependency to libgraphviz-dev.
   * debian/copyright: Update with recent minor changes of upstream license.
   * debian/imagemagick.menu: Add hack to make 'display' work without a
 controlling tty.
   * debian/rules: Consistently use $(CURDIR) rather than `pwd` to keep all
 buildds equally happy.
   * debian/upgrade-checklist.txt: Do not rename -dev packages, but provide a
 list of C API changes between successive Debian releases.
   * debian/patches/add_dfsg_free_logo.patch: Add dummy logo in place of
 original logo that does not meet the DFSG, and therefore gets removed
 from upstream tarball. Patch converted to quilt format from previous
 diff.gz.
