Re: [Ubuntu-be] IRC meeting on 13/05/2009 - Report

2009-05-15 Thread Mike Morraye
This is what I had in mind:

We can have a web-hack-day to blow some live into the website.
The functionality and usefulness of the website are the base of it's
success. (and it's still too separated from the wiki-pages, if you ask
me)

Then we can extend it by "virtual workshops".
So we'll have something as LoCo website-beats... or however you want to
call them.
Just some time where there's some more attention on the
website-contribution.

We can organize them on the #ubuntu-be channel and back them up trough
the mailinglist

The hardest part is to get it dynamic. (some content can aromatically be
integrated from the wiki pages)
>From that point on, there will be less (translation)work.
At this point, everything should be written and translated twice.
And some (new) people like the website layout more than the wiki pages.

It's a hard nut to crack, but it's worth it...

Let me know your opinion.
If there are some people willing to do this, then we can start looking
for a place to do so ;)
(I found out this is quite something hard)

Kind regards,

Mike

Well I'm French speaking too. But I favor English for communication
inside Ubuntu-be because of efficiency. Disucssions started in in
French or Dutch have a tendency to stay in only on language. IMHO, it
drives more people away than English. It sure drive me away when the
discussion is in Dutch since I barely understand it. But I always do
the effort to try to understand a minimum to see if I may bring some
value by joining the discussion (in English). Most of the time it
involve automatic translation (http://translate.google.com).
Anyway, I wasn't talking about internal communications but about the
website. The issue of German translation applies to all external
communication.

And now in French...

Hi, I'm back but I've been quite busy since I returned from holidays.
I really like the idea of organizing a website hack weekend (or even a
single day). Although we need more writing (in Dutch, English, French
and German) than hacking. If you look at the bugs list
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-belgium/+bugs), most of them are
Incomplete because we need a German translation for some strings.

I'll try to be at the next IRC meeting but I don't know yet if I will

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Promotion material (dutch and french)

2009-05-15 Thread matthew
I think the best one is

"Be Free, Be Ubuntu".

No colon (dubbelpunt), but a comma. You can't use colons in slogans like
this one. It's like... Be free, and how, when you use Ubuntu. It doens't
have power. When you use a comma, it uses more power. Be free = Be Ubuntu.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Promotion material (dutch and french) (jean7491)

2009-05-15 Thread Pierre Buyle
Hi,

Thank you for your proposition, here are my comments: The "Loco" text
is barely readable, the font is hard to read even when not rotated. I
don"t understand whats the man (?) in the middle stands for. The red
and yelow color are too bright and looks "plain". The whole logo
doesn't scale, at 64px or 32px the text will be unreadable and the man
un-recognizable. This it cannot be used as icon.

Btw , I did an "Ubuntu-be" logo for the Launchpad page, see
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/24372623/ubuntu-be.mugshot.png. It's
the "plain" Ubuntu circle of friend using the Belgian color (from the
Tango[1] palette). I used this logo as base for the ubuntu-be web
editors and event team (also on Launchpad, see
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-be-webeditor and
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-be-events). For these I simply added a
standard Tango icon in the middle of the circle. They are all in SVG
format on my HD.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Promotion material (dutch and french) (jean7491)

2009-05-15 Thread Alain Baudrez
On http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html the definition of 'free
software' is as follows:

Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept,
you should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer.

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute,
study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four
kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

   - The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
   - The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs
(freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
   - The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor
   (freedom 2).
   - The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and
modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community
benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

On http://people.mech.kuleuven.be/~bruyninc/etos/ they use the term 'vrije
software' :

Software
*'' of ``*Open Source software *'' genoemd. Het
woordje ``*free*'' schept vaak verwarring met
*freeware

So, I suggest to translate 'free' with 'vrije software'

Alain

It is difficult to translate "free" in "vrij" or "libre", there are
nuances according the different languages.
An expert in linguistic has perhaps a better solution ?

I hope to be on place at 9 h. (I'm coming from Ostende) to install the
booth and organize the work with the team. You are welcome between 9h.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Software cost of moving back to Windows

2009-05-15 Thread kenneth.westeli...@pandora.be
I left a comment on this post. I'm using Linux for over 10 years now and I have
to disagree on some parts of your post. Even as a Windows user you can benefit
from the efforts of the Open Source community and use Open Source / Free
software for your everyday tasks. In which case, you only have to buy a license
for the OS. The latter probably comes pre-installed on your PC / portable
(unfortunately), so in this case there's no additional cost :(

Voici une proposition de logo. It's just a try and it may be reworked
upon your remarks and comments. Best Regards.

"Ubuntu is kostenloos" misschien?

vatbaar is.

[Ubuntu-be] Software cost of moving back to Windows

2009-05-15 Thread Alain Baudrez
On my blog
http://wamukota.blogspot.com/2009/05/windows-equivalents-for-linux-software.htmlI
entered a small article about how much it would cost me to leave Linux
behind and go (back) to MS-Windows.

Windows is indeed for the happy few and rich...
