Subject: We want to know about the best LoCo Team Blogs!

Hi All!

As part of the work going in to make loco.ubuntu.com tab-worthy
(http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/05/26/future-loco-team-portal-plans/), we
need to know what the most awesome blog feeds are for LoCo content.

Do you have a blog about your LoCo team? Do you write about, post
pictures, and talk about the events your organize? If so, we want to
ensure your feed appears on the new loco.ubuntu.com
(http://loco.ubuntu.com).

To do this we are looking for recommendations for feeds. You don't have
to be an official Ubuntu member to have a feed on the site, you just
need to blog about the things your team is doing.

If you don't have a blog, I recommend you set up a free blog at
wordpress.com (http://www.wordpress.com).

Finally, go and let us know about your feed on the wiki page
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoPortalFeeds).

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-QC] Problème VMWare Player

2011-06-01 Thread Yannick Pavard
Allo,

on a besoin non ?

[Ubuntu-QC] Ascenceur dans 11.04 ca me va pas

Non.

fonctionne assez simplement l'installation...

non fonctionnelle lorsque tu changes d'ordinateur à moins d'avoir

http://www.bluegriffon.org/

/home/gerard/.local/share/applications/
j'ai un ensemble de fichiers .desktop
dont le type est fichier de configuration. On dirait l'équivalent des
fichiers .ini sous Windows.

[ubuntu-uk] back again at 64 bit

2011-06-01 Thread Andrés Muñiz Piniella
Hello a work collegue has a 64 bit machine and tried running (live

I tried at my work PC downloaded the 64bit version and used the web

on try ubuntu busybox code came by and said the following:

cannot mount /dev/loop1 on /cow

I'm now downloading the LTS 64 bit to see how that goes,
but in the mean time if he wants to do, for example, some video
editing at home would openshot, pititvi, ... take the advantage of the
64bit machine? or would it act as if it's a 32bit? If so it might be

Natty 64 bit freezes during boot time - the bit where the opening music
playes, and X starts up. It is a total crash. I reported it, but could
not get any data about the crash. OTOH 64 bit 10.10 works just fine!

Hi everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to Jared about the use of social
media for the Ubuntu Australia Loco. I think we as a group need to
discuss how best to utilise the accounts/groups that we currently have,
and decide what could be changed to improve their functionality.

My proposal would be to set up a Twitter and identi.ca account for
Ubuntu-AU that could be used to broadcast events and other updates to
users of these services. Currently there is an identi.ca group for
Ubuntu Australia, but as far as I know there is no way to post messages
as the actual group. By having an official Twitter and identi.ca
account, people might take more notice of upcoming events that have been
posted.

Also, I have been looking into the benefits of a Facebook page vs a
Facebook group. A good comparison of both of these can be found at
http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-groups-pages-2010-02. One main
benefit I can see of having a page over a group is the ability to set an
easy to read URL for a Facebook page, as opposed to using a long,
convoluted URL that is set for a group. Also, a page will allow you to
post as the page, rather than as yourself in the group. Possibly it
would be useful to have both a group and a page, so events can be shared
slightly easier through the group, but posts can be sent out as the
page.

I have added an item to the agenda for the next meeting on June 10 for
us to discuss social media use. For those who cannot attend the meeting,
please send through your thoughts to the list so they can be raised at
the meeting.

Regards,
Joel

The nm-indicator applet is tied to the notification area and possibly to the
indicator applet. People most often try to remove the social networking icon
or
the me icon and find that other things disappear as well. I think many of us
who don't use social networking just learn to leave the indicator icon for it
alone and ignore it since removing it deletes other stuff as well.

Try adding the notification area back to the top panel (right click and Add to
Panel...) and then reboot. I don't know why the reboot is necessary but the
indicator applet is always reloaded and reset on a reboot. There's no
nm-indicator applet that can be added to the top panel in this way; I think
this
is because it automatically links to the notification area and/or the indicator
applet and gets displayed. It's also not possible to move the nm-indicator
icon
around as it always appears to the far right - if you move all your indicators
around it will eventually finish up at the far right corner of the screen.
Sometimes moving the indicators is a good idea - I've heard of the nm-indicator
applet being stuck (hidden) behind one of the others.

Chris.

all free software people here who have little use for the LSB. Where
do the proprietary software distributors hang out :-)

the proprietary software distributors hang out around USA lawyer
offices, where they get advice on how to perform tivoisation without
anybody noticing. they then ship TVs and even 3G modems with embedded
linux kernels and custom OSes... and nobody notices.

my take on this is that ARM is still just emerging from the
uselessness of sub-600mhz ARM9s and ARM11s as far as general-purpose
computing is concerned [laptop / desktop etc. *not* true embedded
purposes obviously: don't get upset, ARM employees, because mr LKCL
said your processors were quotes useless quotes - read it again: it's
a *conditional* description]. also, the sheer diversity of SoCs plays
directly, psychologically, against anyone joining forces on things
like LSB. thus the majority of proprietary software distributors up
until recently have been doing custom-built from scratch software
stacks [using e.g. buildroot, openembedded] and thus LSB was and still
is completely useless to them.

even android is custom-built, and everything (except the
highly-optimised apps - for ARM - which are becoming more common) is a
java app.

that having been said, 500mhz+ Dual-Core Cortex A9s already out which
knock the stuffing out of 1.6ghz Intel Atoms (yes, saw the youtube
video) mean that could just be about to change, completely.

sooo... although the situation *right now* is that nobody in the
commercial world is the slightest bit interested in LSB because they
all do custom builds of complete software stacks, it could be said
that *if* the free software community just dropped ready-to-go LSB
standards in front of their noses, they'd quite likely use it.

you have to remember that the majority of these companies could not
put two lines of code together to save their lives. they literally
have to be spoon-fed (in some cases even to the point of being told
where to put the screws, let alone the software). they are usually
spoon-fed by the CPU manufacturer [and in the case of MStar Semi, they
won't even let *you* violate the GPL, they do it entirely for you].

so in that regard, i think it's more a case of if the free software
community provides LSB across ARM, it'll get used.

so in _that_ regard, the question becomes: are the efforts of the
free software community better off being spent elsewhere? and what
benefit is there *TO THE FREE SOFTWARE COMMUNITY* of doing LSB for
ARM? forget the proprietary junkies, they'll suck anything from us
that moves and not give a dime in return.

That seems to be my cue to provide the community case for the LSB.

The LSB provides several things to the community:

 - a framework for allowing Linux distributions to pool their userbase
and work together as one platform instead of multiple platforms, one per
distro

 - test suites which identifies both compatibility problems and
outright bugs to be detected and fixed

 - a method for targeting builds at multiple distributions at once,
both proprietary and free

 - reporting tools for finding portability problems in built apps,
again for both proprietary and free apps

We currently provide all of this for 7 architectures. ARM benefits
indirectly (for example, many of the compatibility breaks detected on,
say, x86_64 will affect all archs equally), but indirect support doesn't
include the tools we've developed, and often compatibility issues are
arch-specific.

all free software people here who have little use for the LSB. Where
do the proprietary software distributors hang out :-)

They are starting to hang out in all the familiar Free Software places. :-)

sooo... although the situation *right now* is that nobody in the
commercial world is the slightest bit interested in LSB because they
all do custom builds of complete software stacks, it could be said
that *if* the free software community just dropped ready-to-go LSB
standards in front of their noses, they'd quite likely use it.

Circumspect and balanced as always Mr. Leighton. :)

I've been to the commercial world on a temporary visa and they do in
fact care about things like standards. In fact I would go so far as to
say that this LSB proposal for ARM would significantly improve life
for consortia like GENIVI which has members from the ARM and Intel
camp.

you have to remember that the majority of these companies could not
put two lines of code together to save their lives.  they literally
have to be spoon-fed (in some cases even to the point of being told
where to put the screws, let alone the software).  they are usually
spoon-fed by the CPU manufacturer [and in the case of MStar Semi, they
won't even let *you* violate the GPL, they do it entirely for you].

so in that regard, i think it's more a case of if the free software
community provides LSB across ARM, it'll get used.

I agree.

so in _that_ regard, the question becomes: are the efforts of the
free software community better off being spent elsewhere?  and what
benefit is there *TO THE FREE SOFTWARE COMMUNITY* of doing LSB for
ARM?  forget the proprietary junkies, they'll suck anything from us
that moves and not give a dime in return.

In my experience there are dimes to be had, you just have to ask nicely.

Regards,

Jeremiah

Re: [lsb-discuss] Does anyone care about LSB on arm?

2011-06-01 Thread Jesse Barker
At the risk of overstating the obvious, there are also ABI guarantees
at stake here, which in my mind are architecture agnostic. OpenGL
applications need to know which bits (API functions) of which core
versions can be expected to be resolved during load time and which
must be queried through GetProcAddress. LSB specifies this and makes
it unambiguous.

cheers,
Jesse

That seems to be my cue to provide the community case for the LSB.

The LSB provides several things to the community:

  - a framework for allowing Linux distributions to pool their userbase and
work together as one platform instead of multiple platforms, one per distro

  - test suites which identifies both compatibility problems and outright
bugs to be detected and fixed

  - a method for targeting builds at multiple distributions at once, both
 proprietary and free

  - reporting tools for finding portability problems in built apps, again for
 both proprietary and free apps

We currently provide all of this for 7 architectures.  ARM benefits
indirectly (for example, many of the compatibility breaks detected on, say,
x86_64 will affect all archs equally), but indirect support doesn't include
the tools we've developed, and often compatibility issues are arch-specific.

Second language pack update for natty postponed

2011-06-01 Thread Kenneth Nielsen
Hallo translators

Because the first language pack update for natty ended up being
postponed, the second one will also be postponed. The reason for this
is, that the first and the second release ended up being to close
(testing for the second release was supposed to start this Thursday)
and pushing the second release back we can bring the release schedule
back in sync.

Therefore, the testing of the language pack for the second language
pack update will not begin this Thursday but instead on the 9th on
June. The schedule and calendar feed has been updated to reflect the
changes.

Sorry about the late notice.

AFAIK theres a bug that keeps the additional drivers dialog from
popping up, but you should be able to determine from that link if its

AFAIK theres a bug that keeps the additional drivers dialog from popping
up,
but you should be able to determine from that link if its applicable to
your
hardware, and how to deal with the issue if it is... also, if you have
some
live CD's such as ubuntu 10.04 laying around, see if you can get it
working
in there easily, and note what driver the device uses, and that should
help
you with whatever version you are struggling with now.

Alguém poderia me ajuda???

Como criptografar uma unidade de armazenamento

http://vps.fmvz.usp.br/blogs/fernando/2011/03/27/como-criptografar-uma-unidade-de-armazenamento/

*#dd bs=4K if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sd?1*

Para criptografar a nova partição utilize o seguinte comando:

*#cryptsetup -h sha256 -c aes-xts-plain -s 256 luksFormat /dev/sd?1*

*#cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sd?1 privado*

A seguir
crie o *sistema* de *arquivos*

*#mkfs.**ext4** /dev/mapper/privado*

Finalmente monte a partição e modifique o usuário e grupo proprietário

*# mkdir /media/privado
# mount /dev/mapper/privado /media/privado
# chown -R meuusuario.meuusuario /media/privado*

*# umount /media/privado
# cryptsetup luksClose /dev/mapper/privado*

e montar automaticamente assim que o dispositivo for conectado.

Talvez atualizar o apt (o velho apt-get update) resolva.

Alguém poderia me ajuda???

Como criptografar uma unidade de armazenamento

http://vps.fmvz.usp.br/blogs/fernando/2011/03/27/como-criptografar-uma-unidade-de-armazenamento/

proteção extra a ataques. Esse processo pode levar bastante tempo.

  *#dd bs=4K if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sd?1*

Para criptografar a nova partição utilize o seguinte comando:

  *#cryptsetup -h sha256 -c aes-xts-plain -s 256 luksFormat /dev/sd?1*

  *sistema* *ext4*:

  *#cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sd?1 privado*

A seguir crie o
  *sistema* de*arquivos*

  *#mkfs.**ext4** /dev/mapper/privado*

Finalmente monte a partição e modifique o usuário e grupo proprietário

  *# mkdir /media/privado
  # mount /dev/mapper/privado /media/privado
  # chown -R meuusuario.meuusuario /media/privado*

  *# umount /media/privado
  # cryptsetup luksClose /dev/mapper/privado*

montar automaticamente assim que o dispositivo for conectado.

Pessoal,

http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-br@lists.ubuntu.com/msg85986.html

apoiar e procurar postar corretamente.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Instalação do Gnome Shell

2011-06-01 Thread UbuntuListas - GMail
tempo, *mude* quer voltar a usar, *volte!!!*

cheio no meu Milestone.
Muitos programas quebram, o principal deles é o launcher no Android, é o

UUID=b8b6b48a-3dae-474d-9385-fd38418a8fdd/media/milestone  auto
ro,noauto,nouser,exec 0 0

Estou usando Ubuntu 11.04, porém a interface tradicional do GNOME.

No trabalho,
numa nVIDIA o Unit rodou bem.

Pessoal,

[Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu.be - Wegetit.be

2011-06-01 Thread Eric Van Aelst
@Wouter: I'm willing to do whatever I can to help out Ubuntu.be in any
possible way. It's my goal in live to keep fighting Microsoft,
eventhough it's a long and difficult road. But then again, every system
sold with Ubuntu instead of Windows means a new believer in this OS. Now
I have found a supplier who delivers complete systems without any OS
pre-installed. I work with this supplier for quite some time now, and
their products are very reliable. Just let me know how I can help you
guys out.

also in prices these are practically equal to those from the firms that
can sell them in bulk WITH ubuntu imprint on them...so no need to print
your paper cut it and stick it on each of your 25 sticks

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/PromotionMaterial/ProposalsGoodies2011?action=AttachFiledo=viewtarget=Prijslijst_EUR_18-05-11.pdf
the canvas series are the ones you refer to and are in price
 thesame as the twister series

It was just to show the design, in fact, the sticks on the PDF look great.

I really like the Twister series. I can imagine that it would look very
 nice with an Ubuntu-be engraving.

you don't have to imagine it... you can allready look at it here :

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/PromotionMaterial/ProposalsGoodies2011?action=AttachFiledo=viewtarget=PR334588_Ubuntu-be.pdf

and here they are all in action including your just do it

Interesting. They are a lot cheaper indeed, around 50%...
We should check out the vendors of both stores, and maybe check if the

justifies further investigations.

1 color only or a surcharge of 39 euro per extra color (black red?)

Re: [Ubuntu-be] IRC meeting 26/05/2011 – Report (USB stick)

2011-06-01 Thread Ward De Ridder
I have just had a little chat with their sales team, this is what I found
out:
For an additional color you have to pay the startup cost 1 more time, and
7ct extra / stick
And if we want the logo printed on both sides it's another aditional 11ct /
stick (no startup costs if it's the same print on both sides)

For postage costs it's free if we order more than €850, else they just
charge the costs of our prefered shipping method. They are located in
Dongen, that's not that far from the border, maybe someone comes there
regularly and can pick them up.

Keep in mind that the with the other shop (with the prices in the pdf at the
wiki), the 20% VAT isnt included ider.

And about the 25, if we can buy a 100 for almost the same price I don't see
any use in buying 25 first :D
Worst case scenario (I don't think that will happen) if we really can't sell
them all we can offer them @fosdem next year for the same price we bought
them, than they will sell...

Could you state how much delivery costs it would be otherwise?

I've made a spreadsheet...
people can see here :
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=nlhl=nlkey=0AtTBma0QX74ldE10ZkVkRW5GTUc1MWNTMTA5ejJNYncsingle=truegid=0output=html

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=nlhl=nlkey=0AtTBma0QX74ldE10ZkVkRW5GTUc1MWNTMTA5ejJNYncsingle=truegid=0output=htmlpeople
who want to include their inquery can give the details by mail or request
access (gmail account!)

at the moment we would imagine 2 sides printed, 4gbyte size, at least 2
colors, 20% tax, possibility of delivery

Dongen is indeed not that far... I've been in the neighbourhood a few
weeks ago to pickup something of 15 euro's...
but between Antwerp and the Dutch border you can expect to spend 2 hours (1
hour in both directions) due to the building of a ring arround some
city... (no not Antwerp... that wan was vetoed out by the Antwerp
Referendum It 's a bridge...no it's a tunnel)

eg i was gone for 4 hours (googlemaps)+2 hours traffic ...= 6 hours to get
my 15 euro worth of merchandise... sending by mail would have cost 7 euro's
additionally...

Hi all,

Here is a message we received through the contact form on the
Ubuntu-be. This person is asking for CDs to distribute at a school
computer fair in October (long time) in Seraing. We are also invited
to participate to the event, I guess it would be free for us to have a
booth there.

Could someone from the event team reply ?

Regards,

PS: I removed Dethier Andy from the forwarded mail, you can contact me
or if you need it.

Madame,
Monsieur,

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Wegetit.be

2011-06-01 Thread wouter Vandenneucker

I don't know martijn,
I didn't receive an email today. I would think we all get an email from it
than.I do understand your frustration and hope Eric replies to this problem
asap.
I am very sure Eric did not foresee it would create such a stream of messages,
and that he wasn't intending to.In that spirit of thought I think that filing
such a complaint isn't better for any of us. It wouldn't be better for Eric,
Wegetit, Ubuntu-be, Ubuntu and FOSS in general.I do believe however that your
name (if he's still in the list) should be removed either by Eric or yourself.
kind regards

Wouter

That was clearly a lie, as I received a message again today.
I think it's time for a formal complaint, and i'd like to see
 ubuntu-be distantiate from this spammer.
