Re: [ubuntu-in] Offline Ubuntu
Hi ! The main problem with Ubuntu I envisage would be adding and updating software without a net connection. I don't know if it is possible to run the computer with a live USB stick which can be updated on another computer. I am sure this is possible using the usb creator tool in Ubuntu. A persistent live session can be created on the usb stick wherein you can run updates, etc. Then just plug that usb stick in the machine you wish to run it on and boot off it. I still have my Ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala live usb stick with persistence, and it works fine :) Another way would be to just install Ubuntu on that stick as a full install rather than a live session (with data persistence). Advice is solicited for a distro which would run out of the box, easy to upgrade and is user friendly for 'wincedows' people. regards Kartik I think Linux Mint (any version which you prefer and are comfortable with) should be good enough. These days, I have personally been leaning more towards Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) due to the fact that it is a rolling release ! It is available online at http://bbc.co.uk/click and for the moment is the top item. With only an outsider's knowledge of current education it seems to me that education objectives for 'ICT' start with a given that you get the basics by knowing which button to press for Microsoft Word etc. Our local adult education place has a computer room with (literally) wall to wall Microsoft, home made signs and posters full of Microsoft-eeze. Courses there can only be run by accredited trainers (I asked about running one), and these have spent a lifetime learning Microsoft stuff, and they are busy enough even now to want to avoid a substantial change. There is an overwhelming swirl and momentum of the broader establishment which pulls (I was going to say 'sucks'...) into Microsoft products. I would expect that staff and students in a full ICT course all use Windows on their computers, even though they might on occasions 'use' Linux before they tick a box and go back to what they have on their laptop. I would guess that even in many higher level computing courses, this is also true, and Linux based OSs are on people's laptops for daily use in only a very few cases. The Government and its predecessor, is actively keen to encourage wider use of open source: 'Government ICT Strategy' (March 2011) http://bit.ly/e6Xpb2 it includes requiring 'mandatory open standards' for example and explicitly mentions 'lengthy vendor lock-in'. I talk to my local Adult Education Centre a couple of times a year, mentioning Ubuntu, and it is only recently that there has been any (even grudging) acceptance that FLOSS could be used, it seems that something, maybe the strategy document above, may be prompting change. -- alan cocks Ubuntu user -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] BBC Click
Still haven't seen the BBC click video that started this but I like where it is going! I did give a slight thought as how to engage a class to learn a bit of programming or open (free) software culture. I came up with a silly idea but I'll just say it. 1) Get the kids to agree what they would like to do: image editor, syncing tool, game ... make sure they all like there idea and it would be best that they stick to one. 2) Search of an existing project that uses that idea or a similar one. In the unlikely event that a project does not exist create it, but this would be more difficult) 3) Get the kids to use the program and: a) reading code if they like to program (add your stuff) b) bug reporting c) translating if programming is not of their interest (both code and documentation) d) doing documentation if the above is not good e) doing artwork for the project if the above is not good f) spreading the word with videos, flyers etc if the above is not good (using the input from d) g) prepare video tutorials (using the input from c) The above sounds so exciting that I want to do it. If the program is portable to android, meego or maemo it will get them to want to ditch their blackberrys and iphones. Well maybe it's too high hopes but that is the kind of thing I would like my daughter to do in computer classes. Count me in if you need someone from the Ham, Richmond council. I can't say my programming skills or programming management are any good but I can translate and do bug reports. -- Andrés Muñiz-Piniella -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Hi! You may be interested to know that I'm an adult education tutor, ICT being one of my subject areas. Just recently I've managed to get our local adult education service (on North Tyneside) to put on a courses this autumn dealing with both FOSS and GNU-Linux (specifically Ubuntu), with me teaching them. Part of this came from the fact that my previous 'Microsoft-only' students have got used to the idea that good free and legal software is available - and that it's just as easy to learn as the MS equivalent. This was a deliberate policy on my part to include Linux alternatives as part of the curriculum... and it seems to have paid off. Specifically, they (the students) pressurised the powers-that-be for courses that expanded on the small amounts they'd been introduced to. Nevertheless. what I'm doing is still a rarity (and I guess I'm thought of as a 'bit eccentric' because of my Ubuntu evangelising). Most ICT tutors have never heard of Ubuntu, Linux, or anything else that doesn't have MS written in front of it. They 'teach to the test', and use what's given to them. Intellectual dumbing-down? Yes, I'd say that in most cases we're selling our students short with what we offer them these days. I am finding Unity much more productive that the classic desktop and with some ideas from OMG Ubuntu have added a few missing pieces. I have not had any problems using any applications, find the global menu very intuitive to use and very quick, love the additional indicators that have been created since the release and am really amazed at how much work is going on around Unity. I have set up Unity for a whole range of people, from my girlfriend, to work colleagues and people looking for something nice to use on their PC. They all love and made no issue about it not looking like the last version. Although Frederik already mentioned that a proper profile is required, and that most of the performance problems on Linux are related with DBUS, I want to add some comments. For what it worths, right now there are a running project in order to improve Orca performance: https://live.gnome.org/Accessibility/Opportunities/OrcaPerformance AFAIK, as part of this project, one thing to investigate is if it worth to move part of current Orca implementation to C in order to improve performance (as IMHO, a full C re-implementation doesn't worth it). On 06/07/2011 03:36 AM, Isaac Porat wrote: Hi I was asking the same question a couple of years ago. My understanding after looking a bit into the issue is that IBM consulted at the time key people in accessibility in Linux (there still some minutes of these meetings) to make both interfaces as close as possible which as indicated it is somewhat the case. Reading between the lines, iAccessible2 was not accepted for Linux because of both companies and Linux vs Windows politics. the interfaces are close but not the same. At the time perhaps if somebody on the Linux side took a more favourable approach the communication layer in iAccessible2 implementations would have been properly separated. As it happened my understanding from Bil Cox who looked at the issue in more details in the Windows world the implementation and communication layers can be mixed with vendors who want to support both Windows and Linux so in practice they need to a good extend maintain two separate stacks and with the ratio of Windows to Linux users of something like 90 to 1 Linux support not suprisingly is always behind. It is true that there are people that thinks that moving iAccessible2 to Linux should be the path. But AFAIK, the reason of why it wasn't done was not due politics. It was in order to avoid to reinvent the wheel. Linux had already a working accessible interface, ATK, implemented by a lot of actors on Linux (gtk, firefox, etc). So moving to iAccessible2 means to change all in order to move to a (as already said) really similar technology, with similar features. But I also understand that having just one thing would have a lot of advantages. BTW: AFAIK, this is not one is better that two. AFAIK MacOS doesn't use ATK or Ia2: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Accessibility/Conceptual/AccessibilityMacOSX/OSXAXModel/OSXAXmodel.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001078-CH208-TPXREF101 Or I'm wrong? They are written explicitly to bring GNOME2 functionality to GNOME3, and by the way are visually stunning-especially the traditional GNOME menu themed in the GNOME3 transparent smoke. This package was enough to make me switch from Unity to Gnome-shell with these extensions added. The pertinant extensions, from the author's website are listed below: Move the clock: Move the clock from the centre of the panel towards the right. This isn't a very significant change, but it was the first extension I wrote. One minor annoyance is that the width of the clock changes with the time so the indicator icons move about a little.Favourites in panelPlace a launcher for each favourite application in the panel. It isn't possible to manage the list from the panel: instead you can add, remove or move favourite applications in the dash and the panel display will update to match. Applications menu in panel: Replace the Activities button in the panel with an Applications menu. The menu is implemented using facilities supplied by the shell so it doesn't behave exactly like a normal menu. Shut Down menu: Replace the Suspend item in the status menu with Shut Down. The dialog that this invokes includes all available shutdown options: suspend, hibernate, restart and power off. An a really big one: Bottom panel Add a bottom panel, including a window list, workspace switcher and message tray button. Because the workspace switcher is arranged horizontally the keybindings for changing workspace have been altered to ctrl-alt-left/right. The message tray button shows and hides the message tray, as the hot corner is hidden by the panel. Right clicking on the workspace switcher invokes a dialog to set the number of workspaces. This feature is just not implemented yet. It will be in Oneiric. Good to know, Robert. Are you able to say something about e.g. the keyboard layout and universal access? This is an area where I'm definitely not an expert, and your help is greatly appreciated here! Most of my knowledge has come from picking Martin Pitt's brain and talking to others. The keyboard design as I see it is: - The layout is left as X sets it up - Selecting a user switches to the keyboard layout they have configured in their ~/.dmrc. If not present, keep the default layout - There will be a layout switcher, which will be applied to the .dmrc so it is preserved on login - Cancelling a login will revert to the default layout The real difficulty is in making sure that I've handled all the keyboard config correctly. I'm using libxklavier, I just need to know how many config items to save/restore correctly. With universal access the goal is as much as we can get. The greeter will probably be built with the same tech as Unity so as well as Unity. Ideally we'll have full AT-SPI with Orca running if required and an onscreen keyboard. Great. Is Gunnar Hjalmarsso involved in this feature implementation, I'm not yet, but I plan to make myself involved to assist with the i18n matters. :) I'll try to ensure that the current functionality with respect to languages and locales is preserved in the Oneiric release. Re: NetworkManager Applet 0.8 Icon
It seems (from the logs) that it wasn't able to correctly download the indexes for the repositories, so it may have been confused about what it was to delete. Also, I'm not sure installing over the top of a previous version is actually supported, even though it lets you install without formatting. I've had one failed install with the exact same results as you. Someone else (on Ubuntu Forums) was able to do this fine, which was good because their /home was on the same partition as /. Some people are born lucky. :-) It's not guaranteed to work, and my feeling is that 11.04 as it is on the LiveCD is quite buggy. None of my installs have worked properly until I managed to run the updates, and that goes for both Ubuntu 11.04 and Xubuntu 11.04 - The LiveCDs won't even work on one of my machines. I'd bet that if you do a proper clean install and format / then it will be fine. If you get errors but the system is still working, run the updates and you should be fine. The same thing goes if you can't start the desktop environment but can get a terminal to do the updates. Also, before you install from the LiveCD you should check the MD5SUM as published. Having the LiveCD work flawlessly is no guarantee that you got a good download or did a good burn, or that the installer will work correctly. I generally check the MD5SUM of the downloaded ISO, and then burn it (if I'm doing so - USB installs are standard for me now) at the slowest rate, then check the burnt disk for errors. Chris. Upstart helpers (abstract jobs and event aliases) for Oneiric
Hi All, This mail turned into rather an epic in the writing. The summary is I'm interested in thoughts on the two implementation options for Proposal 2. Regards, James. = Overview = For a while Clint and I have thought it would make sense to introduce some helper events and jobs. The idea here being to: - Simplify existing .conf files. - Make it easier / speed up writing new .conf files. - Aid in understanding .conf files. Re: Upstart helpers (abstract jobs and event aliases) for Oneiric
In CrOS, we do something similar. We have three boot phase jobs that most other jobs are started and stopped by. They are: startup (distinct from the event) boot-services system-services They are chained together thus: startup: start on startup (this has a main process that carries out jobs similar to mountall) boot-services: start on stopped startup system-services: start on started boot-services boot-services and system-services stay running until shutdown. Other jobs then use: start on starting startup start on starting boot-services stop on stopping boot-services start on starting system-services stop on stopping system-services The use of ing here is important; it means that started boot-services means that all boot-services have started (since the starting event blocks for them). So system-services happen entirely after boot-services (UI is a boot service for us). Hi James, On Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 03:00:03PM +0100, James Hunt wrote: == Proposal 2: Provide Abstract Jobs for Common Services == [...] Option 1 [...] For example, each display manager package would be updated such that its .conf file specified: envDISPLAY_MANAGER=y export DISPLAY_MANAGER Then, any job that requires a display manager could say: start on starting DISPLAY_MANAGER=y [...] Option 2 Create a Job Configuration File that hard-codes the list of known service providers. However, we have gained by doing this since: - We have still created the level of abstraction desired. - We have contained the problem into a single file: we define the list of display managers *once*. - We don't need to update every Ubuntu (and potentially every Debian) package as would be required for Option 1. - We *could* conceivably auto-generate display-manager.conf from the archive with a simple script which munged the output of: apt-cache search x-display-manager|awk '{print $1}'|sort - The ABSTRACT_JOB variable would allow other jobs to detect that a job was abstract (they shouldn't need to care, but just in case...) This also avoids the unwieldliness of abstract-display-manager (or even abstract/display-manager (were we to put the abstract jobs in /etc/init/abstract/ say). What about merging the two options? I think it's a mistake to have hardcoded lists; this is like having /etc/service.conf instead of /etc/service.d/ for things to easily insert themselves into the system. Imagine, instead: start on (starting DISPLAY_MANAGER=y or (starting gdm or (starting kdm or (starting lightdm or (starting lxdm or (starting slim or (starting wdm or starting xdm))) Then anything not in the hardcoded list can just define itself as a DISPLAY_MANAGER to be included, and everything else can still start on the abstract job names too. -Kees -- Kees Cook Ubuntu Security Team -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

We allow multiple syslog implementations there, so I made syslog-ng do: env SERVICE=syslog export SERVICE=syslog and in dependant jobs: start on started SERVICE=syslog That seemed to work well… but it didn't quite behave as expected. The problem was every service started via 'start on started SERVICE=syslog' inherited the 'SERVICE=syslog' variable and would trigger other jobs start (that was not visible at first, as those jobs would be usually already running because of the first event with SERVICE=syslog). I am not sure this is expected behaviour of Upstart or if it can be changed, but Option 1 clearly didn't work for me. Though, I would prefer this way over 'Option 2'. 'Option 2' (abstract job explicitely listing real jobs that trigger it) may be good for a well-defined 'contained' distribution like Ubuntu, but not a 'everybody may add his stuff' distribution like PLD Linux… or Ubuntu with all the unofficial package repositories. Auto-generating the job definitions would help, of course… but weren't the Upstart job files intended to be human readable and human writable? If we start a precedence of machine generated job descriptions we may end with another layer of machinery over Upstart… Greets, Jacek -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

Eu tenho meu filtro para off topics.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [OFF]Controladora SCSI vs SATA 2 em Raid 0
Wouter, you were (rightfully) complaining about the poor quality of the Impress templates in LibreOffice. I once collected a set of them online (don't remember where though...) I've put them on my dropbox - you can download them if you want: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7584025/Ubuntu_ODP_Templates.tar.bz2 (15,7 MiB uncompressed) They can be a basis for designing - or just the plain package for our localized CD imo... The general ideas and guidelines of Ubuntu need to be taken in account. A target date should be set in order to keep things moving. (having the 11.04 ISO before 11.10 comes out is crusial.) Values: - We keep the official program choise of Canonical/Ubuntu but include a minor amount of programs and drivers that are on general interest for belgian citizens. - No change to the Restricted Extra options. (due to legal issues and ubuntu values) - Support to the Ubuntu guidelines - Endorse users to get to know their system (we can teach them with video's we make) - Canonical has put a serious amount of time in developing the software center, we should make people use it! - Keeping things simple - No 'special' programs or programs only usefull to a specific type of user. Wanted: - (Pre-boot) GUI should list the 4 languages prior to the install proces - Possiblity for both a Persistent and a Pristine boot would be nice (U-fr uses only persistent) What we might want to add (later): - Instruction Videos should endorse our users to explorer and get to know their system, yet keep it simple enough for everyone to follow Videos showing apps that might be usefull for some but not for all can be handled here so people find their way to them.. - A PPA for Ubuntu-be containing LibreOffice Impress templates and Desktop Wallpapers is adviced. Due to the lack of goodlooking LibreOffice Impress templates, the Desktop Wallpapers are just a way to promote ourselves.. might be added later, no need to stall the project for this.. we could ask OSPublish to make us a wallpaper - We could make some dedicated distro's as well afterwards (a kubuntu one, or a rescue version..) -- ubuntu-be mailing list / mailto:ubuntu-be@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-be

-- jabber://jab...@aceler.ru http://www.aceler.ru/ -- ubuntu-ru mailing list ubuntu-ru@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ru
