[ubuntu-uk] how to change icon on main menu?
I've just installed Thunderbird 8 on my Ubunto 10 desktop. I can point the Thunderbird entry in the main menu at the new T'bird startup file (which I've manually installed in /usr/local/bin/thunderbird... and it seems to work ok) But the main menu doesnm't show the new icon and I can't see any way to set the icon. I'm obviously missing something? Also is there an easier way to install T'bird other than extracting the folder and copying to /usr/local/bin? -- Alan G Author of the Learn to Program web site http://www.alan-g.me.uk/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Dual screens
Testing on an aspire one netbook. Using daily ISO from NOV 25. - tried using xrandr... shows what I have but when I tried to put screens side by side it just gave me a usage screen. Man page was no help it seemed to indicate I was doing things correctly. - installed grandr and was able to put the external monitor to side. Mouse moves freely from one monitor to the next. Upper panel can span both monitors. Applications like parole that can go full screen with no decorations grab only one monitor. I have not installed presenter or lyricue to see if they deal properly with the separate monitors. (control panel on one and display on the other) Are there slide show apps that can use this too? I am just thinking what might be useful for live performance... Lyricue would be happy with two computers, one for control and the other for display anyway, but dual monitor would be more portable. Xrandr shows everything as screen 0 only. Grandr shows output as cloned with Extend greyed out. I don't seem to be able to get the two monitors to show up as two workspaces. Probably because there is only one screen. The workspace panel applet shows only the apps on the one screen... which ever screen is left or above. Still, for more screen real estate it works fine. QjackCtl, Hydrogen and Ardour are much easier to use with two screens... just move the mouse from side to side. Applications can be placed on the screen who's geometry best fits. wicd
For those of us using laptops/netbooks, wicd or something like it that puts a monitor in the status area of the top bar is pretty much a must. It seems some of it is there but not all. I installed wicd and wicd-gtk to get it working. The problem is that sometimes the wireless link goes south and doesn't reset automatically. Having an icon that can reset (disconnect and reconnect) and show status can be a real help... better than opening a terminal and bouncing the connection that way turning the transx off and on has other problems too. -- Len Ovens www.OvenWerks.net -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

On the up side, it does allow making startup scripts so that it is easier to carry a setup from session to session or to flip between two favourite setups. Arandr also allows leaving a space between the displays or if one is smaller than the other, deciding if the small display should be close to the top or bottom of the other display. Both grandr and arandr are GUIs for xrandr. So they do not allow any more stuff than can be done directly with xrandr... in fact less. Including either one would be better than what we have now. I think to get two display numbers would mean modifying X config and restarting it or getting it to reread it's config. There are two kinds of use for double (or more) screens: a) Desktop, permanent setup. this one should boot to the same setup each time. Two X screens may not really be needed. b) laptop/portable... a temporary setup. Booted with a single or double display... and if booted single, may have a second one plugged in after session login. Two x screens that always end up on two different workspaces would be really nice... I have tried both lyricue and Impress. They can both work just fine with xrandr (G or A) They both automatically grab the external monitor as display and use the internal as control. Works for me. The only real issue I have found is that when I pull the external monitor the internal (which has been just fine) now is a small window on a much bigger screen, but I have no way to scroll around. Having both screens the same size may fix that but that doesn't really make it great. Ah... I got it, go to the display settings applet and turn off the other monitor before unplugging. When it is plugged back in it needs to be set up again. :P Ja, there are some issues. I end up with three applets for setting my display up. I am not sure any one of them does it all and I can get rid of the other two. For a stable setup like a home desktop with two (or more) screens that are always plugged in... there is not much of a problem... could be nicer... like it would be nice to be able to go to console with one with out bringing the other, it would be nice to have one background across both screens whatever their orientation... one screen saver across both (yup, when the screen saver is set to random, each screen has a different screen saver) It would be nice to dial in some resistance at the edge of a screen for the mouse. It seems all of these issues are known issues that are on the list for work. I think it can be quite usable where it is. The one thing I haven't figured out is how I saved the configuration... I have tried switching the monitors around and rebooting but it comes back to internal left/external right every time... I figured out how I got it to save... and it is not permanent all the time, but it is consistent. Use arandr to set the screens as you wish... then open settings-Display... set one of the displays on is side or upside down and when the dialogue asks if you like it let it time out... actually you can make any change at all (don't turn off and on one of the monitors though) and back and it saves it somewhere it seems to save the whole screens setup when it does so and xfce on next startup uses that info to set the display up including each displays position. However, if when the computer was turned off, the external monitor was removed... on next boot xfce sets the new monitor up to something reasonable (maybe turning auto off would change this) for that one screen. When the other screen is plugged back in... it is once again on top of the internal screen. My choice therefore (for now) would be arandr over grandr because it allows the saving of different setups and the recall of them. Getting it to save default to where display does would sure be a bonus. Changing Display would be even better. Detecting the change of monitor and using a saved setup would be better yet and should be possible by saving a setup as an X monitor definition. Anyway, I would say add arandr but leave the display utility there as well. -- Len Ovens www.OvenWerks.net -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel
Test results of Qsynth running on Xubuntu 11.10, compared with Ubuntu 11.04
Ubuntu Studio Users: I think your plan to move Ubuntu Studio to Xubuntu is a good one. It seems to have the lowest overhead of any of the Ubuntu versions. But it seems there are problems with the kernel itself, which even the lower overhead of Xubuntu cannot solve. I have been working with the Fluidsynth developers to address another problem, and in doing so, discovered the performance problem the testing below attempts to quantify. All: Your suggestion of cutting the sample rate did not seem to have any affect that was visible to me. It may be that I would need to run without Jack, but I need Jack because I use audio files. In the past, I have run without Jack, and the performance of Qsynth was better, but not much better. I could test this further, but it is a moot point, since I need to be able to use audio files in my sequences. I performed some benchmark testing on the problems I have been reporting. I did all of the following on a 933 megahertz unit-processor (one CPU) machine, which has been my minimum system in my test-bed. I tried it on Ubuntu 11.04, and on Xubuntu 11.10. My methodology was to reduce the Qsynth polyphony parameter to the point where my test sequence (MIDI) file yielded no underruns. I did a binary search for the polyphony value that worked. I did not use Reverb, or Chorus (the check-boxes were clear) in any of the tests. With polyphony values above 16, changes of 1 (up or down) made an observable difference. I also noted (while the piece was playing) the Digital Signal Processing load (shown in the Qjackctl window as Real Time Percentage (RT %). When I got down to the minimum Qsynth polyphony value of 16, I started muting tracks, to where the maximum # of single-note-playing-at-a-time tracks played with no under-runs. UBUNTU 11.04 Polyphony parameter value without under-runs:26 DSP Load while playing: Usually in 20% range, sometimes in 30% range, max 38.9% XUBUNTU 11.10 Polyphony paramater value without under-runs:3 (16, with only 3 tracks playing!) DSP Load while playing:In the 50% range, often getting up into the 60% range. *Note: It will not play a single-track piano part without generating under-runs. From past experience, I observed that UBUNTU 11.10 has a poorer performance than XUBUNTU 11.10. Also, the Unity desktop appears to have DSP Load values 20% higher than the cripple-ware Ubuntu Classic desktop on the same machine. As you can see, the performance of the two systems is radically different - an order of magnitude. It is not just a minor difference. The performance hit seems to be associated with the new kernel - not so much the desktop. Though Kubuntu had the poorest performance of the three I tried. A 2.5 gigahertz unit-processor system (using the Ubuntu Classic desktop) will run the test piece without under-runs. I have a 1.5 gigahertz machine which I have not yet tried, but based on the above, it will perform poorly, or perhaps marginally. On 11.04, all of these machines would perform the test piece on Qsynth without under-runs (though on the 933 megahertz machine, the Qsynth polyphony had to be set down to 26). I will do further testing with my 1.5 gigahertz machine, since this is one of the target machines I originally planned to use. -- Sincerely, Aere -- Ubuntu-Studio-users mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users

Last time we spoke about this idea on IRC, somebody mentioned we might be able to hold a release party in hackerspace BXL. This would be great as it is a very central location. If we want to do this however, we need to: a) Ask permission (and get that permission) to hsbxl; b) Find some cool ways to promote it; c) Have some even cooler stuff to do there. Anybody else has an input on this? I'm member of HSBXL - the space is defenitely prepared to host this event. It just needs (a lot of) cleaning up at the moment. So in the near future, I don't think Ubuntu-be would be very happy inviting people here. If you do want to plan somethig: 1. get on the HSBXL mailinglist and ask/announce it. (people will give feedback if there's a problem) 2. check the calendar on the website for event collision (not much happening for the moment) Obviously, there's also Hackerspace Ghent (0x20.be) and Hackerspace Antwerp (voidwarranties.be) that would probably be happy to have you over. For others files, we may be able to setup an easy solution to let some members to upload files on our web server at ubuntu-be (if only a few trusted members need it, we can grant them SSH access to the server), I think we have enough free disk space for that. Or are you asking about a central place to store tangible things in the material world? PS: Note that I said We several times, but I'm leaving Belgium in about a month, so that's actually likely a you ;). Haha, we were talking about a central place to store things in the material world. There were some talks about maybe moving stuff over to my parents' place, or to Jurgen's place. Now where it'll be stored doesn't really matter to me, as long as it's fairly central. [Bug 896512] [NEW] Sysinfo reports incorrect Gnome version on Ubuntu 11.10
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 11.10, gnome-system-monitor reports the following: Ubuntu Release 11.10 (Oneiric) Kernel Linux 3.0.0-13-generic Gnome 3.2.1 and other information. [Bug 886521] Re: CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI should be y when building 3.1 kernel
Boris, are you suggesting the for pre-3.2 kernels, the fix is to backport the 3.2 fix (i.e commit 5fbdc10395cd500d6ff844825a918c4e6f38de37, remove XEN_PLATFORM_PCI config option)? Whilst that would work, surely a less intrusive result would be achieved by configuring CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI=y CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_FRONTEND=y, CONFIG_XEN_NETDEV_FRONTEND=y on all kernels where XEN_PVHVM=y? From memory, I think on 3.1 Oneiric, CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_FRONTEND=y, CONFIG_XEN_NETDEV_FRONTEND=y are already fixed but CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI=y is not. Some experimentation by the reporter and others seeing same/similar issues show that by forcing off disconnected outputs, the boot speed is significantly improved. [Original Report] I've been looking at our session startup time this week, and I've got one of the big delays right down already (bug 854101). However, the next biggest offender is Xorg (when starting a 2d session) - there appears to be a ~5s delay between Xorg starting and the greeter loading. You can see this in the bootchart attached. Looking at the timestamps in my Xorg.0.log shows a pretty big delay just here: [ 15.583] (II) intel(0): Initializing HW Cursor [ 18.030] (II) intel(0): RandR 1.2 enabled, ignore the following RandR disabled message. 18 seconds matches up perfectly on the bootchart with the lightdm greeter starting.
