Hey, that is great news.
My brother has been doing the same i.e. using Parallels-- and having
some issues with slow-down of Ubuntu-- but I think that is because of
the version of Thunderbird that is running in it. A lot of people are
having problems with that version of TB. We're going to update TB to the
latest version available through TB itself, and then I think Ubuntu will
probably run fine just as you report.

Agreed I ended a similar conversation with an adobe support requesting them to
write down feedback (i wanted photoshop). Same with virgin media (wanted their
free programs). I would think it is better to end in a positive tone. Ok
thanks, I'll think about it, can I provide feedback? Might go down a black
hole but it is recorded.

Other than that, agreed, having no OS is great! You can then get home support
for less than £100 a year from canonical (as I recall). That is around the same
price as renewing your antivirus every year with windows. Though i have heard
w7 and w8 have there essential antivirus bundled in or do not need antivirus
any more?
Plus Hardware should still have the 1 year warranty? Not the best news but good
news! Thanks for sharing the chat!

Omgubuntu claim there is an asus netbook around. That seems promising as well.
Thinkpinguin.com and system76 are still top of my list when i buy a new laptop.

Brasero just turns disks into junk.
I like Brasero and it WORKS IN GNOME (same system - just other GUI).

Brasero is standard Ubuntu application, and it MUST work in standard

Re: Brasero problem

2012-06-27 Thread Sebastian Rösgen

I can confirm this.

The problem, has been around for some releases, as far as I remember and
there have been some bug reports concerning the problem.

Have a look at some launchpad bugs:
780117: this is a bug currently being worked on
788300: marked as a duplicate of 780177
905047: which, up to now, has not been marked as a duplicate and
confirms my recollection of the bug being around for some time now

Furthermore connected to this problems are bugs like: 519935 (which do
not make Brasero unusable, but really restrict the overall experience of
using it).

If I remember correctly you can set the burning speed to something
beneath the maximum of your CD/DVD burner and you should avoid to burn
CDs/DVDs directly (instead always create an ISO image).

I think, by the way, that this mail belongs definitively on this mailing
list. If Canonical/the Ubuntu community wants Ubuntu to succeed on the
desktop problems like these cannot and must not be around for such a
long time. These problems really restricts (or better destroy) the
user experience and are some kind of bad PR for the Ubuntu quality.

@the-desktop-team:
By the way, if you want to avoid bad user experience in Germany have a
look at launchpad bug 987212. (Certainly this is a very egoistic remark
as I am affected by this bug ;) ). The bug is, admittedly of a total
different nature and has nothing to do with Brasero, but I think it
could potentially affect a very large number of the Ubuntu users in
Germany (namely those who use the standard issue German Telekom
Speedport Router).

Hello Tom,

It is not possible to use ninemsn catchup under linux.
While moonlight exists for linux and you can get it working for some
apps ninemsn includes drm extensions that are windows only that are
built to use the win32 api.
It may be possible to use a windows version of firefox with wine and
mono but i have no idea if this is going to work.
There has been recent updates for wine to allow this sort of thing but
i do not know if that is complete enough to use.

The Edubuntu DVD sized image come with a fair few applications, maybe boot
it up at a live CD/USB and show them what (Ed)Ubuntu has to offer. I doubt
they would instantly change over but if they've got some old hardware or
interested students, you might get a few takers.

I'd show them LibreOffice, inkscape/gimp, totem/rhythmbox, etc, basic file
management in nautilus, and simple stuff how to shut down and change
wallpaper.

I think you can get the turtle package that does logo programming.

triggered by our change in the source code repository does not overwrite
the change in the translation interface, or that the export triggered by
the change in the translation interface of launchpad does not overwrite
our change in the source code repository? Does the import and export
take such concurrent changes into account or does it blindly overwrite
the one or the other?

Disclaimer: it's been a while since I did any serious work on this, so I
may get some things wrong. And it's complicated, so there's always
things that can go wrong. That said, it seems to work out pretty well
in practice. Here's what I think happens:

The daily automatic export job will notice that there are concurrent
changes, and just skip the export for that day. This doesn't quite
cover all possible conflicts, but that's where the importer's conflict
resolution comes in.

If you take a PO file that was exported from Launchpad Translations,
edit it offline, and then re-upload it, there will be a timestamp in the
header saying when it was exported from Launchpad. If the importer sees
that one of the translations has already changed in Launchpad since the
file was exported, it will downgrade the file's translation of that
message to a suggestion.

avconv -i video.mp4 -vn -acodec libmp3lame audio.mp3

Daí deu o erro:
Unknown encoder 'libmp3lame'

Instalei o pacote ubuntu-restricted-extras e funcionou:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

 /usr/bin/wish /home/eu/Tcl/s.tcl
 #!/usr/bin/wish

As outras saiam desalinhadas.
Usando o Windo$ e M$Wor$ sai tudo bonitinho.

Abraços a Todos,

Paulo Correia

As promised I'll be organising a lekker South African braai at our
 place.

 How will this braai work?
Basically anyone is invited, but we do have a logistic limit of 10 to 15
people on our terrace. The weather needs to be dry for the occasion. If it
rains, we need to shift the venue or the date. I have access to pretty
accurate forecasts so I can tell you at least a day in advance.

South Africans are very casual with their braai. If you happen to have a

Your friends are our friends too.
Because of this, the logistics are just as casual. We do cater for those
who want it. We'll have to shop for it ourselves and anyone can just ask to
buy something for them as well.
Many people prefer to bring their own 'dop en tjop'. Then they know

We will have the basics: lager beer, wine, cola, water, and salads and
snacks. We will have braaivleis according to our own taste. If you wish we
should cater for you, by all means, just let us know. There may be some
boerewors if we can get hold of some. We usually get some sosaties and
 chops from the local butchery.

You can try your skills on our vuvuzela's if you wish. (Don't give your

We usually start our braai early. We get together from about 5pm

(the following message contains South African slang. If you are lost
in translation, there are plenty of web sites that will help you out with
it. Google is your friend. The Wikipedia list is kak, don't bother)

 Howzit!

If you happen to have
a friend that wants to come along last minute, he/she is welcome to join.
Your friends are our friends too.
Because of this, the logistics are just as casual. We do cater for those
who want it. We'll have to shop for it ourselves and anyone can just ask to
buy something for them as well.
Many people prefer to bring their own 'dop en tjop'. Then they know
they'll like the meat that's on the fire, and the booze that is available.
We will have the basics: lager beer, wine, cola, water, and salads and
snacks. We will have braaivleis according to our own taste. If you wish we
 should cater for you,

2012-06-27 Thread yakim

Ubuntu
server 10.04.

http://yakim.org.ua/news/130-linux-course-update1.html

Ubuntu server
 10.04.

Hi Marc,

i also found another way around to correct this error by replacing
liblber-2.4.so.2, i think the liblber-2.4.so.2 is corrupt, it works
after i copied the file from another 10.04 ubuntu server.

Thank you so much for the help... i appreciate your time and effort,
hope this also helped us both.

This is due to installing the 32 bit version libldap-2.4-2 on a 64 bit

In order to correct this please reinstall libldap-2.4-2 using the

[Bug 1018285] [NEW] Redirects incorrectly set Location header in response when Host header is set in request

2012-06-27 Thread Michael Williamson
Public bug reported:

When Apache sends a 301 redirect and the Host header in the request has
an implicit port, it incorrectly uses the Host header of the request and
the port that Apache is running on to set the Location header.

Steps to reproduce:
  * Get Apache to serve up a directory with a sub-directory blah on a
particular port, say, 8080.
  * Access the URL http://localhost:8080/blah; (note no trailing slash) with
the Host header Host: example.com.
  * Note that the Location header in the response is Location:
http://example.com:8080/blah/; rather than Location http://example.com/blah/;
as it should be.

Expected behaviour:
  * A location header that uses the Host header only, rather than combining the
Host header and the port Apache is running on.

If the Host header has a port explicitly set, Apache behaves correctly
e.g. if the Host header is Host: example.com:8090, then the Location
header in the response is Location: http://example.com:8090/blah/;.

[Bug 992578] Re: vsftpd error 530 after upgrade from oneiric to precise

2012-06-27 Thread Teppo Sulavuori
removing /etc/pam.d/vsftpd worked for me also, but that makes the whole
supports pam authentication totally meaningless, since you can't
actually configure anything for vsftpd :-)

Could this be regression or something similar to this old bug from redhat?
(Comment 24 mentioning some kind of pam module stack memory overflow thing..)

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=708657#c24

Reasoning: removing /etc/pam.d/vsftpd means actually that pam just uses
the default other authentication, which in effect only includes the
common-* things, which in turn is almost the same what the original
vsftpd-file does. But looking with strace shows that for some reason
vsftpd opens the /etc/pam.d/other file even when /etc/pam.d/vsftpd is in
place? Don't know if it is supposed to do that or not, just an
observation. In the end it seems that removing vsftpd-file results in
vsftpd opening less pam-files and that could incidate that this is
related to some kind of memory limit barrier..?

2012-06-27 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Is this really a bug, or a new feature in a future Apache version?

Traditionally, Apache used to issue redirects based on its own knowledge
of its own name (and presumably port), rather than using the Host
header, didn't it? I'm pretty sure that it used to be the case that it
was essential for Apache to know its own name correctly for this reason.

I wonder if upstream considers this a bug? Have they fixed it in the 2.2
series?

Traditionally, Apache used to issue redirects based on its own knowledge of
its own name (and presumably port), rather than using the Host header, didn't

If that's the case, then surely Apache should ignore the Host header
entirely, rather than using the hostname from the Host header, and the
port Apache is running on? The fact that it works correctly when the
port is explicitly set in the Host header makes me pretty sure this is a
bug -- when the port in the Host header isn't explicitly set, it should
mean there's an implicit port i.e. port 80 for HTTP, so the behaviour
should be consistent whether the port is explicit or implicit in the
Host header.

[Bug 1018285] Re: Redirects incorrectly set Location header in response when Host header is set in request

2012-06-27 Thread Robie Basak
Apache has to use the Host header to match a virtual entry. But you may
well be right - I'm no authority on this.

I think that to progress with triage of this bug, we need to determine
if the latest 2.2 upstream is affected. If it is not, then a backported
fix may be justified, so the next step would be to identify the upstream
2.2 series commit that fixed this issue. If the latest 2.2 upstream is
not affected, then upstream would be the appropriate place to seek
guidance from, perhaps by filing a bug there.

2012-06-27 Thread Robie Basak
Marking as Incomplete for now, since to verify if the bug is valid, I
think we need confirmation from upstream - either that their latest 2.2
release built from source does not have the problem, or in the form of a
commit in the 2.2 series where they fixed it, or in their acceptance of
a bug, or some other form of confirmation. I don't think it's
appropriate to seek a fix solely for Ubuntu otherwise. If the situation
changes, please comment and change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 573318] Re: mysql server will not start

2012-06-27 Thread hegemon _8
I've fixed this issue for my case. I have kubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) and
tried to install airtime. And it was failing. As I'm newbie I've spent
few hours searching for a cause. in log file i found this:

createdb: database creation failed: ERROR: new encoding (UTF8) is
incompatible with the encoding of the template database (SQL_ASCII)

HINT: Use the same encoding as in the template database, or use
template0 as template.

Next two hours looking for a right solution (of many I've found), and
thanks to this:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/20880/how-do-i-create-a-unicode-databases-in-postgresql-8-4
Ive entered in terminal:
sudo pg_dropcluster --stop 9.1 main
sudo pg_createcluster --locale=en_US.utf8 --start 9.1 main

And works fine 4 me :)

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
@Georg,

have you found any more about the relation to acpi?

@Stephane,

in your case it would certainly seem to be a bug in either the guest
kernel or the virtual nic driver, as with the original bug submitter.
Can you try switching to a different virtual nic type, i.e.

   model type='ne2k_pci'

Also if it is possible for you to run a test on a quantal host, which
has a much newer qemu-kvm, that would be interesting. Can you tell me
in numbers how heavy traffic needs to be before the VM drops out? Is it
traffic to the VM which freezes that VM, or does any traffic to the host
or any VM threaten to freeze any VM.

@Christian,

several people have piped in on this bug. I'm not certain about yours,
but this bug in particular is in qemu itself (or perhaps, though
unlikely, the kernel).

[Bug 1003656] Re: when adding a bond the bridge fails to acquire a dhcp address

2012-06-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks, Andrew. I can't find any other differences, so if indentation
in /etc/network/interfaces is breaking bond, then given that
interfaces(5) specifically says indentation doesn't matter, this would
definately be a bug.

[Bug 1003656] Re: when adding a bond the bridge fails to acquire a dhcp address

2012-06-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
Just a note, I've reproduced this on a simple openstack instance. I
used the interfaces.utf8 as my /etc/network/interfaces (except using
bond-mode balance-rr since I dont' have a switch capable of doing
802.3ad), rebooted and had networking. Then I simply removed all
indentation, and after another reboot networking failed to come up.

thanks for looking into this. one thing worth noting is that the ascii
version of the file attached in comment #5 (interfaces.fail) is indented
but non-working. in fact, i only found that the utf8 version worked by
accident; i cut'n'pasted what i had posted in the original report back
into my interfaces and suddenly it worked! eventually i found the non-
printing characters, but was left with no real understanding of the
problem.
