[Ubuntu-ch] LoCo Team Contact
Hi all. I would like to ask if one of you is interested in picking up the 'job' of LoCo Team contact. You will be responsible for handling media and merchandise request, take care of the local contact lists, do wiki gardening and help organizing events. I am going to step back from this position this year. Greetings Marcus -- Ubuntu-ch mailing list Ubuntu-ch@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ch

Grub 2.0 Landing in Quantal
A major updating of grub to 2.0 is happening now in quantal. This change drops alot of custom patches and brings quantal in line with upstream, fixing bugs and offering a better experience (hopefully!). That said, if you find any issues or find yourself unable to boot, etc, as always have a plan in place. Make sure you have a copy of a live usb or cd image of ubuntu to recover with. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/grub2/2.00-3ubuntu1 If you need any help, feel free to ping the list, IRC, or consult the ubuntu wiki on repairing grub. Re: Buildup to beta2 -- Testcase Revamp
On Thursday, September 13, 2012 06:27:40 PM Nicholas Skaggs wrote: Ok, feature freeze and beta1 craziness is now behind us. Some of you may have noticed, but the first phase of our testcase migration is now complete. All the old testcases (including the application testcases!) are now migrated into the tracker. You can see the general application testcases from last cycle in the 'ubuntu global jam' milestone on the package tracker: http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/235/builds What this means is work can now begin on enhancing and improving the testcases and testsuites we have. The first testcases being targedt are the image testcases. As many of you noticed, they need to be updated to match the new features found in the beta1 installer. To that end there's a few bugs out there to support rolling out the changes to the testcases: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-qa-website/+bug/1039158 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-qa-website/+bug/1050489 The goals to have done for beta2 are: -Updating testcases for new ubiquity features (webcam take a picture, lvm, encryption, etc) -Adding alternate-only testcases back to the desktop cd's as needed (need testcases for the livecd, memtest, etc) -Migration of ubuntu testcases to all flavors (the changes above should allow this to happen) -Finishing the last ubuntu server testcases for rollout In regards to the flavor testcases, flavor specific pieces will be additional testcases on-top of the default ubuntu testcases. The bugs above will support varying the displaying of 'ubuntu/xubuntu/lubuntu/kubuntu/ubuntu studio/mythbuntu/edubuntu' inside the testcases, allowing us to share all the bulk of maintenance as much as possible. I know some of you have been helpful in wanting to write testcases. There is actually a team of folks https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/TestCaseAdmins/ManagementOverview and a specific format https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/TestCaseFormat that is being followed. If your interested in helping, please get in touch with me. You can help write testcases, verify testcases that have been written, help out with migrating testcases, etc. For Kubuntu, it looks like the KDE U/I for the lvm and encryption changes will land before beta 2, so we'll need to make sure those test cases appear for Kubuntu live images as well. We're also likely to drop the alternates during beta 2 if we get a fully qualified set of desktop images, so we'd also need the alternate only cases added to Kubuntu desktop as well. 12.10 accessibility
Does anyone know the 12.10 accessibility story? I'm about to do a fresh install, and am wondering if I should go with 12.04.01, or with a version that will be released in a bit over a month. I'm particularly concerned about the Unity2D deprecation, and the abandonment of QT in Unity3D in favor of a custom toolkit. Is Canonical using deprecation to mean go away entirely, or phased out over time? Is there any accessibility at all in this new toolkit? Thanks. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility

Or the entire menu, including its items? I'm still on 11.04 for a variety of reasons namely dealing with always losing speech mid-upgrade and no longer having another box to SSH from, so I'm not terribly familiar with Unity. I know that if I install 12.04.01, I likely won't upgrade to 12.10 for a while, so if 12.10 is mostly ironed out then I'd rather install that and deal with rough edges for a month or so than be a release behind. Besides, I don't have most panel items spoken under 11.04, so if it's just the menubar titles that don't speak, then I'm not losing functionality. I'd also like to add that since unity 2D is no longer available from 12.10 and beyond, there is somewhat of a regression in desktop accessibility and usability. There will be efforts made to fix this, but our timeframe is the next LTS. In fact, due to the accessibility team's limited resources, we will only be targeting LTS releases so far as overall desktop usability and polish goes. There are far too few developers working on accessibility, and there is far too much to cover and ensure a deacent experience in a 4 month time frame. I say 4 months, because thats approximately how long we have per cycle for feature development, and rest assured most of the functionality work required for better accessibility is not considered a bug fix. This feature enables all content types to be searched directly in the home lens, so that users no longer need to navigate to content type specific lenses before performing a search. This feature solves identified usability problems, and lays part of the foundation for further Dash enhancements in 13.04.
[Bug 1048787] Re: slapd gives assertions for valid configuration
** Description changed: - The slapd version in Ubuntu precise (2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1) suffers from - the same issue that was reported in debian BTS for the debian version - 2.4.28-1.1. + [Impact] + + [Fix] + + [Test Case] + + [Regression Potential] + + [Original Report] + The slapd version in Ubuntu precise (2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1) suffers from the same issue that was reported in debian BTS for the debian version 2.4.28-1.1. When configuring the shell backend in slapd.conf the syntax is (see man slapd-shell): add pathname argument... bind pathname argument... compare pathname argument... and so on. That is the path to the script followed by its arguments. This has worked fine in the past. However, the current version 2.4.28-1.1 of the slapd server refuses to start if any arguments are given after the path name in the configuration file, with the following assertion: slapd: ../../../../servers/slapd/config.c:198: config_check_vals: Assertion `c-argc == 2' failed. For the configuration of the shell backend the assertion condition means that it is not possible to pass arguments to the script in the slapd.conf. The man pages documents that this should still be possible, and it has been working with earlier versions. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1048787 Title: slapd gives assertions for valid configuration To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/1048787/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 259139] Re: Ncurses package does not contain libtinfo
Hate to bump an old bug... but it seems silly to create another one for essentially the same issue. I am currently packaging a proprietary application as an Ubuntu package (the MacroView SCADA system, as it so happens). Host platform is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS i386. In previous releases, the upstream software package linked against libncurses.so.5. Now it links against libtinfo.so.5, and thus I now have an issue getting dpkg-buildpackage to co-operate. I tried making a dummy package to install the necessary symlink... this might fool a runtime application, but it does not fool dpkg-shlibdeps, which complains loudly: dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: /lib/libtinfo.so.5 has an unexpected SONAME (libncurses.so.5) dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for /lib/libtinfo.so.5 (used by debian/macroview/usr/lib/macro/imgstat64). Now, all very well to argue that the build scripts should take care of this; however in my situation, the build scripts are taking a tarball containing precompiled binaries and copying them into the appropriate directories for packaging -- I do not control the linking process. So the solution in comment #8 will not work for this use case. Is it possible that this issue could be addressed? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259139 Title: Ncurses package does not contain libtinfo To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ncurses/+bug/259139/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
Can you give us a hint with 'uname -a'? mb W dniu 2012-09-13 00:03, alistair pisze: I installed OpenSUSE 12.2 on this machine as soon as it became final. Since then, I have booted into SuSE and back into W7, suspended and resumed on both OSes many times, and have had no problems. In fact, everything* but the toys (ambient light sensor and keyboard illumination) works perfectly. (Make sure you configure your trackpad in System Settings!) By default, KDE plays a little jingle just before it shuts down on suspend. This is normally really annoying, but in this case, it is quite handy, because both Ubuntu and W7 suspend silently, and on this computer, which is normally silent in use and has no external LEDs, there is no way to tell whether or not it has suspended, apart from pinging it from another machine on the LAN. So, maybe this muddies the waters. Is the problem solved in the SuSE kernel, or is it a problem with Ubuntu at a higher level? A * Lid open is not detected; I have to press the power button to get the machine to resume. However, I cannot recall any distro *ever* detecting lid open on any post-APM laptop I have owned, and W7 sometimes fails to, so I cannot really blame OpenSUSE for this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986724 Title: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986724/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1016824] Re: Ubuntu wallpapers are low quality (low resolution, JPEG artefacts, noise)
Still seeing this in the latest quantal wallpaper. The default purple wallpaper is grainy and looks low quality. The others in quantal are better than precise though. ** Description changed: Ubuntu wallpapers are low quality. They often are low resolution, have JPEG artefacts and/or visible noise. This degrades the quality feel of the desktop itself. The low resolution is self explanatory. Many people use a monitor resolution that is 1920 pixels wide. This should be easy to support as even the lowest quality digital camera is higher resolution than that. By comparison, gnome-backgrounds uses mostly 2560x1600 or 1920x1200. Often JPEG artefacts are visible in areas of very slight gradation. Though in precise I think there is a bigger problem with noise. Neither of these should be visible on the desktop. Please increase the JPEG encoding quality, and the image smoothness before that. Compare ubuntu-wallpapers with those from gnome-backgrounds. Though gnome-backgrounds are not great quality either, they are far better prepared than ubuntu-wallpapers. - - I repeat: This degrades the quality feel of the desktop. ** Also affects: ubuntu-wallpapers Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: ayatana-design Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1016824 Title: Ubuntu wallpapers are low quality (low resolution, JPEG artefacts, noise) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1016824/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
