[Ubuntu-ch] LoCo Team Contact

2012-09-13 Thread Marcus Moeller
Hi all.

I would like to ask if one of you is interested in picking up the 'job' of LoCo
Team contact.

You will be responsible for handling media and merchandise request, take care
of the local contact lists, do wiki gardening and help organizing events.

I am going to step back from this position this year.

Greetings
Marcus

What worked for me for a while was to copy over the iso image using dd.
To boot from usb hold down cmd+opt+o+f while the machine powers on.
Then at the openfirmware prompt enter
   boot usb1/disk@1:2,\\yaboot
Sometimes it was usb1 other times usb0

yeah i tried this, though i grabbed the iso and did the dd on an intel machine.
not sure if that makes any difference. considering dd functions bit by bit, it
shouldn't, but maybe someone else has some insight.

when i try usb0, i get couldn't locate partition.
when i try usb1, i get can't open with no other explanation.

looking at dev / ls it seems there is a /usb@1b,1/disk@1 and no usb0 from what
i can see.

as for version:
0 dev /openprom
0 .properties
nameopenprom
device_type BootROM
model OpenFirmware 3

and the banner gives me Apple PowerBook5,4 4.8.6f0 BootROM.

Grub 2.0 Landing in Quantal

2012-09-13 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
A major updating of grub to 2.0 is happening now in quantal. This change
drops alot of custom patches and brings quantal in line with upstream,
fixing bugs and offering a better experience (hopefully!). That said, if
you find any issues or find yourself unable to boot, etc, as always have
a plan in place. Make sure you have a copy of a live usb or cd image of
ubuntu to recover with.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/grub2/2.00-3ubuntu1

If you need any help, feel free to ping the list, IRC, or consult the
ubuntu wiki on repairing grub. Safe testing everyone!

Re: Buildup to beta2 -- Testcase Revamp

2012-09-13 Thread Scott Kitterman
On Thursday, September 13, 2012 06:27:40 PM Nicholas Skaggs wrote:
Ok, feature freeze and beta1 craziness is now behind us. Some of you may
have noticed, but the first phase of our testcase migration is now
complete. All the old testcases (including the application testcases!)
are now migrated into the tracker. You can see the general application
testcases from last cycle in the 'ubuntu global jam' milestone on the
 package tracker:

 http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/235/builds

What this means is work can now begin on enhancing and improving the
testcases and testsuites we have. The first testcases being targedt are
the image testcases. As many of you noticed, they need to be updated to
match the new features found in the beta1 installer. To that end there's
a few bugs out there to support rolling out the changes to the testcases:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-qa-website/+bug/1039158
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-qa-website/+bug/1050489

The goals to have done for beta2 are:

-Updating testcases for new ubiquity features (webcam take a
 picture, lvm, encryption, etc)
-Adding alternate-only testcases back to the desktop cd's as needed
(need testcases for the livecd, memtest, etc)
-Migration of ubuntu testcases to all flavors (the changes above
 should allow this to happen)
-Finishing the last ubuntu server testcases for rollout

In regards to the flavor testcases, flavor specific pieces will be
additional testcases on-top of the default ubuntu testcases. The bugs
above will support varying the displaying of
 'ubuntu/xubuntu/lubuntu/kubuntu/ubuntu studio/mythbuntu/edubuntu' inside
the testcases, allowing us to share all the bulk of maintenance as much
as possible. I know some of you have been helpful in wanting to write
testcases. There is actually a team of folks

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/TestCaseAdmins/ManagementOverview

 and a specific format

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/TestCaseFormat

that is being followed. If your interested in helping, please get in
touch with me. You can help write testcases, verify testcases that have
been written, help out with migrating testcases, etc.

For Kubuntu, it looks like the KDE U/I for the lvm and encryption changes will
land before beta 2, so we'll need to make sure those test cases appear for
Kubuntu live images as well. We're also likely to drop the alternates during
beta 2 if we get a fully qualified set of desktop images, so we'd also need the
alternate only cases added to Kubuntu desktop as well.

12.10 accessibility

2012-09-13 Thread Nolan Darilek
Does anyone know the 12.10 accessibility story? I'm about to do a fresh
install, and am wondering if I should go with 12.04.01, or with a
version that will be released in a bit over a month.

I'm particularly concerned about the Unity2D deprecation, and the
abandonment of QT in Unity3D in favor of a custom toolkit. Is Canonical
using deprecation to mean go away entirely, or phased out over
time? Is there any accessibility at all in this new toolkit?

Thanks.

Does this mean the entire menubar, including app-specific items? Or just
the titles of the top menu items? Or the entire menu, including its items?

I'm still on 11.04 for a variety of reasons namely dealing with always
losing speech mid-upgrade and no longer having another box to SSH from,
so I'm not terribly familiar with Unity. I know that if I install
12.04.01, I likely won't upgrade to 12.10 for a while, so if 12.10 is
mostly ironed out then I'd rather install that and deal with rough edges
for a month or so than be a release behind.

Besides, I don't have most panel items spoken under 11.04, so if it's
just the menubar titles that don't speak, then I'm not losing functionality.

Thanks.

I wouldn't consider 12.04 to be a release behind 12.10, especially if
you're going to move up to 12.04.1 and 12.04.2 and so on. 12.04 is an
LTS release and will be supported for five years. 12.10 will only be
supported for 18 months.

I'm not saying you shouldn't want to move up to 12.01. I'm just saying
that these are different releases with different conditions, so I
wouldn't consider one to be behind the other. It depends on what you
plan to do with this install.

I'd also like to add that since unity 2D is no longer available from 12.10 and
beyond, there is somewhat of a regression in desktop accessibility and
usability. There will be efforts made to fix this, but our timeframe is the
next LTS. In fact, due to the accessibility team's limited resources, we will
only be targeting LTS releases so far as overall desktop usability and polish
goes. There are far too few developers working on accessibility, and there is
far too much to cover and ensure a deacent experience in a 4 month time frame.
I say 4 months, because thats approximately how long we have per cycle for
feature development, and rest assured most of the functionality work required
for better accessibility is not considered a bug fix.

It looks like those strings are located in the package python-apt.

Found it using:

Re: UIFe for unity-lens-files

2012-09-13 Thread Andrea Azzarone
*poke* :)

2012/9/6 Andrea Azzarone azzaro...@gmail.com:
 Hi,

I'd like to add file-system icons to the Folder section of the
 unity-lens-files.

Unity Launcher changed the way it handles the file-system icons (see
bug 713423): by default all file-systems are displayed in the
 launcher.
You can blacklist them using a quick-list item.
By design you can un-blacklist a file-system dragging and dropping the
file-system icon from dash to launcher.
So right now there is no easy way to un-blacklist a file-system.

Can we please make a ui freeze exception for this?

 Hello,

With humble apologies, here would be another UIFe for a home lens
 ordering improvement (https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1043915).
The design people explain the feature as follows:

Displaying the content type most relevant to the user's search query
is one of the headline features of the 12.10 Dash. This feature
enables all content types to be searched directly in the home lens, so
that users no longer need to navigate to content type specific lenses
before performing a search. This feature solves identified usability
problems, and lays part of the foundation for further Dash
enhancements in 13.04. Although slightly late landing, this is one of
the most important features to land in 12.10.

The feature is ready, and the question is if we can ship it. It's
available for quantal for example in the staging repository Unity
 https://launchpad.net/~unity-team/+archive/staging

 -Timo

Hi Timo,

Thanks for the e-mail. If I understand it correctly, there are no
changes to translatable strings, so no objections from the translations
team.

Cheers,
David.

Recentemente instalei a impressora Epson TX 125 e tudo corria bem.

- usando o outro sistema operacional tudo funciona.

Alguém pode me ajudar?
Qualquer ajuda será bem vinda!!

[Ubuntu-BR] mudar padrão de acesso a diretórios e arquivos criados

2012-09-13 Thread Antonio Silva

diferentes (
http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-br@lists.ubuntu.com/msg96608.html).

As
pastas no home de cada usuário são criadas pela rede com usuários que
utilizam windows.

Obrigado, abraços,

Antônio

 Hello Dear Ubunteros!

some friend of mine (maybe me too) is looking after the Asus EEE
  1225C,
since that machine will come with Ubuntu 12.04 + for a nice price!

It seems to be available in France (Boulanger, Auchan, RueDuCommerce,
Izideal) but I'm not able to find it -until now- in Belgium:

maybe some of you does, and knows more about this ready-to-go
 new/powerfull/quite cheap Ubuntu netbook ?

I first read some info at Forum.Ubuntu-NL.org:

  http://forum.ubuntu-nl.org/algemeen-42/asus-lanceert-nieuw-netbookje-met-ubuntu-12-04/25/

 when found specifications here:
 http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1225C/

...but in some countries it seems to have already been released in
  July:
ASUS Quietly Launch New Ubuntu 12.04 Netbook | OMG! Ubuntu!

  http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/06/asus-quietly-launch-new-ubuntu-netbook

 What about Belgium ?

Currently checked stores with no avail-info:
 Media-markt, Carref0ur, Ph0t0hal, Pix-mania, Gobin-Electronix
  (@Ostend);
have also tried 333 x to call FNAC BE but their telnr. is fake and
 definitely busy!!!

 Any useful tips welcomed!
We're probably 2 persons interested in this EEE if available in
  Belgium.

 Thanx !

I was actually thinking it would be easier to update the text that goes
with the wiki, but then again, anyone with a launhpad account could write
on it, so perhaps it isn't such a good idea after all.

I would, however, keep the thing part of the ubuntu-be web site. It makes
it easy to find, and part of the whole ubuntu-be project.
I'd say it's an important pillar of support and promotion.

About the t-schirts, I would actually like one too. It seems I'm giving
more and more of these presentations, and sporting some ubuntu-wear should
actually be part of the act.
Although I must say that I really look a lot better in a golf shirt though

 Hello Dear Ubunteros!

some friend of mine (maybe me too) is looking after the
 Asus EEE
 1225C,
since that machine will come with Ubuntu 12.04 + for a
 nice price!

It seems to be available in France (Boulanger, Auchan,
RueDuCommerce, Izideal) but I'm not able to find it
 -until now- in Belgium:

maybe some of you does, and knows more about this
 ready-to-go new/powerfull/quite cheap Ubuntu netbook ?

I first read some info at Forum.Ubuntu-NL.org:

 http://forum.ubuntu-nl.org/algemeen-42/asus-lanceert-nieuw-netbookje-met-ubuntu-12-04/25/

when found specifications here:
 http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1225C/

...but in some countries it seems to have already been
 released in
 July:
ASUS Quietly Launch New Ubuntu 12.04 Netbook | OMG!
 Ubuntu!

 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/06/asus-quietly-launch-new-ubuntu-netbook

What about Belgium ?

Currently checked stores with no avail-info: Media-markt,
 Carref0ur, Ph0t0hal, Pix-mania, Gobin-Electronix
 (@Ostend);
have also tried 333 x to call FNAC BE but their telnr. is
 fake and definitely busy!!!

Any useful tips welcomed! We're probably 2 persons
interested in this EEE if available in
 Belgium.

 Thanx !

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu-be user manual GitHub or Launchpad

2012-09-13 Thread tom verlinden
@ Wouter,

that would have to be more than a year ago. I remember something about
asking for one, be it on irc, or via mail, then somebody (really don't know
who anymore) told me that i were to be informed when the new batch would
arrive. Obviously, that last step never happened...So i guess the
communication got a bit messed up. (happens now and than).
Wich led me to asking my question a few mails ago...

So if there's any way i could get one
I remember Ward telling me he would get some and have them dropped of at
our space.

Anyway, what's the price for an xl nowadays anyway?

2012/9/13 Jan Bongaerts jbongae...@gmail.com

I still have a box of mixed t-shirts... they must be quite dusty in the
meantime, as I described in an earlier message on the list.
I'm currently reorganising and redecorating my apartment, and that
includes some drywalling works... which involves a lot of dust...

In the previous message, I also said I don't have the time anymore to
organise all Antwerp activities, fair-wise, so the materials that are still
at my place should probably move to someone else's place to be able to use
them at future events and fairs.

 Anyone?

 Thanks

[Bug 1050469] Re: cannot use more than one ecryptfs container

2012-09-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lxc - 0.8.0~rc1-4ubuntu34

---
lxc (0.8.0~rc1-4ubuntu34) quantal; urgency=low

  [ Serge Hallyn ]
  * 0214-give-pclose-errno: help debug pclose failures when lxc runs scripts.
  * 0215-lxc-clone-name-arg: fix incorrect checking for --name argument.
(LP: #1049914)
  * 0216-hook-kmsg-to-console: link /dev/kmsg to /dev/console so init log
messages can be seen. (LP: #1049926)
  * 0217-lxc-clone-fix-fstab: fix check for lxc.mount in lxc-clone
(LP: #1049987)
  * 0218-api-shutdown-fix-doublestop: don't call c-stop() when already
stopped (LP: #1050001)
  * Update lxc-start-container apparmor abstraction to allow ecryptfs mounts
from the pre-mount script. Remove the instruction to add that line from
the example hook.
  * Update lxc-start-container apparmor abstraction to allow mounts to paths
under /var/lib/lxc/$container/, so that pre-mount hooks can stage mounts
there. Also update the mountecryptfs example premount hook to use that.
(LP: #1050469)
  * debian/rules: remove parsing of apparmor.in files.

  [ Stéphane Graber ]
  * Update lxc-start-container apparmor abstraction to allow aufs and overlayfs
mounts from the pre-mount scripts. This is required by some hooks and will
be needed by the new lxc-start-ephemeral.
  * Remove multi-arch path in lxc-start-container apparmor abstraction and
instead just allow /usr/lib/*/lxc/ so nested containers running on a
different architecture don't get blocked by apparmor.
  * Cherry-pick python-lxc fixes from upstream:
- Minor PEP-8 syntax fix
- Return an exception when getting Container instance as non-root
- Automatically convert any state string passed to wait() to its uppercase
  equivalent.
- Replace test.py by a full example of the API.
- Remove zombie handler function from C module as it's no longer required
and causes weird bugs when used with the hooks.

  [ William Grant ]
  * lxc-start-ephemeral: exit with the command's status, not always 0.

[Bug 1044318] Re: [SRU] pre-1.5 OVS has trouble with floating ips when pinging from the same box

2012-09-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- Note: OVS from before 1.5, which includes the default versions shipped
- with 12.04 and Fedora 17, has a bug that causes it not to work correctly
- with floating IPs when the person contacting the floating IP is on the
- same box as quantum-l3-agent.
+ [Impact]
+ The connection tracking logic using by IPtables gets confused if a packet
passes through multiple linux network namespaces on the same host. The reason
for this confusion is that OVS is not properly clearing some of the fields in
the skb header, meaning the connection tracking ignores this packet, so
iptables functionality that relies on this (in particular DNAT and SNAT) do not
work.
+
+ In particular, the use of OVS by OpenStack Quantum is critically
+ affected by this bug.
+
+ [Fix]
+ The issue has been fixed upstream as of 1.4.3. A minimal 5-liner that clears
the appropriate metadata from the skb header. The patch has been
cherry-picked and fix released in the current Ubuntu dev. release (12.10).
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Create external network 40.0.0.0/24 for floating IPs
+ 2. Assign br-ex the IP 40.0.0.1
+ 3. Pinging 40.0.0.1 appears to work, but you're pinging the router, not the VM
+ 4. Network connectivity to the VM with the floating IP does not work, as
expected.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal. Simple patch that has been cherry-picked from the current upstream
stable release of Openvswitch (1.4.3).

floating IPs when the person contacting the floating IP is on the same box as
quantum-l3-agent.

While not very likely to happen in a production setup, this is fairly
common in simple development environments. For example, let's say you
create an external network 40.0.0.0/24 for floating IPs. If you then
assign br-ex the IP 40.0.0.1, you should be able to reach all of your
VMs with floating IPs, but it won't work because of this bug. Oddly, it
- will often appear to work if you use ping, but in reality you are pining
- the IP address in the router namespace, not the VM.
+ will often appear to work if you use ping, but in reality you are

We believe the following OVS commit it required for this to work
  properly:

bin/gitweb.cgi?p=openvswitch;a=commitdiff;h=53e6421bc83918ac2d00ba5516f205fa7e394140

We are looking at creating a new stable release on the 1.4.x branch to
include this change and plan to work with distros to get it pulled into
  their packages.

[Bug 1048787] Re: slapd gives assertions for valid configuration

2012-09-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- The slapd version in Ubuntu precise (2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1) suffers from
- the same issue that was reported in debian BTS for the debian version
- 2.4.28-1.1.
+ [Impact]
+

+

+
+ [Original Report]
+ The slapd version in Ubuntu precise (2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1) suffers from the
same issue that was reported in debian BTS for the debian version 2.4.28-1.1.

When configuring the shell backend in slapd.conf the syntax is (see man
  slapd-shell):

  add pathname argument...
  bind pathname argument...
  compare pathname argument...

  and so on.

That is the path to the script followed by its arguments. This has
worked fine in the past. However, the current version 2.4.28-1.1 of the
slapd server refuses to start if any arguments are given after the path
name in the configuration file, with the following assertion:

  slapd: ../../../../servers/slapd/config.c:198: config_check_vals:
  Assertion `c-argc == 2' failed.

For the configuration of the shell backend the assertion condition means
that it is not possible to pass arguments to the script in the
slapd.conf. The man pages documents that this should still be possible,
and it has been working with earlier versions.

[Bug 1050663] [NEW] Weird key bindings in vi in an ssh session from 64bit to 32bit

2012-09-13 Thread Mitch Claborn
Public bug reported:

I support a number of systems remotely, and often find myself using vi
in an ssh session to edit various files. In some cases, but not all,
when I press the up arrow (in insert mode) I get a capital letter A and
a new line instead of the cursor moving up. Other arrow keys have
similar issues. This only seems to be a problem when in insert mode.

My system is 12.04 64 bit. When I connect to a remote system that is 64
bit it works fine, but when I connect to a remote 32 bit system, I have
the described problem.

[Bug 259139] Re: Ncurses package does not contain libtinfo

2012-09-13 Thread Stuart Longland
Hate to bump an old bug... but it seems silly to create another one for
essentially the same issue.

I am currently packaging a proprietary application as an Ubuntu package
(the MacroView SCADA system, as it so happens). Host platform is Ubuntu
10.04 LTS i386.

In previous releases, the upstream software package linked against
libncurses.so.5. Now it links against libtinfo.so.5, and thus I now
have an issue getting dpkg-buildpackage to co-operate.

I tried making a dummy package to install the necessary symlink... this
might fool a runtime application, but it does not fool dpkg-shlibdeps,
which complains loudly:

dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: /lib/libtinfo.so.5 has an unexpected SONAME
(libncurses.so.5)
dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for /lib/libtinfo.so.5
(used by debian/macroview/usr/lib/macro/imgstat64).

Now, all very well to argue that the build scripts should take care of
this; however in my situation, the build scripts are taking a tarball
containing precompiled binaries and copying them into the appropriate
directories for packaging -- I do not control the linking process. So
the solution in comment #8 will not work for this use case.

Is it possible that this issue could be addressed?

2012-09-13 Thread Marcin Bojko
Can you give us a hint with 'uname -a'?

W dniu 2012-09-13 00:03, alistair pisze:
I installed OpenSUSE 12.2 on this machine as soon as it became final.

Since then, I have booted into SuSE and back into W7, suspended and
resumed on both OSes many times, and have had no problems.

In fact, everything* but the toys (ambient light sensor and keyboard
illumination) works perfectly. (Make sure you configure your trackpad
 in System Settings!)

By default, KDE plays a little jingle just before it shuts down on
suspend. This is normally really annoying, but in this case, it is
quite handy, because both Ubuntu and W7 suspend silently, and on this
computer, which is normally silent in use and has no external LEDs,
there is no way to tell whether or not it has suspended, apart from
pinging it from another machine on the LAN.

So, maybe this muddies the waters. Is the problem solved in the SuSE
kernel, or is it a problem with Ubuntu at a higher level?

 A

 * Lid open is not detected; I have to press the power button to get the
machine to resume. However, I cannot recall any distro *ever* detecting
lid open on any post-APM laptop I have owned, and W7 sometimes fails to,
so I cannot really blame OpenSUSE for this.

[Bug 1016824] Re: Ubuntu wallpapers are low quality (low resolution, JPEG artefacts, noise)

2012-09-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Still seeing this in the latest quantal wallpaper. The default purple
wallpaper is grainy and looks low quality.

The others in quantal are better than precise though.

** Description changed:

Ubuntu wallpapers are low quality. They often are low resolution, have
JPEG artefacts and/or visible noise. This degrades the quality feel of
  the desktop itself.

The low resolution is self explanatory. Many people use a monitor
resolution that is 1920 pixels wide. This should be easy to support as
even the lowest quality digital camera is higher resolution than that.
By comparison, gnome-backgrounds uses mostly 2560x1600 or 1920x1200.

Often JPEG artefacts are visible in areas of very slight gradation.
Though in precise I think there is a bigger problem with noise. Neither
of these should be visible on the desktop. Please increase the JPEG
encoding quality, and the image smoothness before that.

Compare ubuntu-wallpapers with those from gnome-backgrounds. Though
gnome-backgrounds are not great quality either, they are far better
  prepared than ubuntu-wallpapers.
-
- I repeat: This degrades the quality feel of the desktop.
