Now now now some explanation.

jbicha correct me if I´m wrong please:)

1. Ubuntu Wiki is, well, open. You don´t need to be an official Ubuntu
flavor to create a dedicated wiki page...

2. It isn´t official right now, hopefully as jbicha work more on it
will get an official status a.s.a.p:)

3. Ubuntu ISO QA Tracker IS dedicated to Ubuntu official flavors.
However let me see will balloons allow an exception lol.

Re: ppc images too big

2012-09-19 Thread Phill Whiteside
During daily builds it is not uncommon for iso's to be over sized as they
are automatically built each day. I noticed last night that xubuntu also
commented that their daily had gone over size, so I think it is a generic
thing. On the subject of over-sized images and booting from usb, they are
both covered in the FAQ section [1].

GRUB version 1.99 and 12.10

2012-09-19 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

http://i46.tinypic.com/345fybs.jpg

I'm done with Lubuntu 12.10 32-bit installation (the daily build -
18-9-2012). Installation done on /dev/sda7. GRUB was installed on sda7 NOT
the MBR of sda.
This is an Asus F3F Laptop, Intel Due @1.86GHz with 512MB RAM.

My guess is GRUB version 2 has different codes/scripts and the old one
(GRUB 1.99) is still not familiar with it.
I'm not sure which entry shall I choose? there are 3 entries instead of 2:

*Ubuntu' --class ubuntu --class gun-linux --class gnu --class os etc
**Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-15-generic' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux
  --class gnu --class os etc
**Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-15-generic (recovery mode )' --class ubuntu
--class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os etc *

The two entries in RED, if I'm not wrong, they both give me the same result
and lead to the same road. I login to the desktop and everything is ok.
So, why there are two? it should be one.

I know we can edit the GRUB menu either manually or by another application
(GRUB Customizer) but, by default, usually, there are two entries.

Any idea what is exactly going on?

Thanks!

P.S.
Perhaps I need to find another machine or maybe an USB Drive so I can test
the new GRUB too where I can install GRUB version 2 to the MBR.

Bonjour..

ici:
http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpl11023lang=encc=ustaskId=101prodSeriesId=29789prodTypeId=18972

Could you please specify whether you have upgraded from another graphics card

I have also found that at first it refused to install the drivers for the gpu.
I ended up reinstalling 12.04 with an alternative cd ( needed to use lvm).
Could you try a live cd of normal 12. 04 ( with persistency) and see whether

[ubuntu-uk] HTML images

2012-09-19 Thread John Davis

Hi,

I am a novice at web site design.

I am designing a web site for my son's business.

One page of index and 2 pages of photos. Portfolio pictures etc.

I have done the first and second page, in Firefox they display perfectly
but with explorer and chrome, some of the photos are missing.

I have checked the naming conventions of the photos, some are initials I
have made up and some are called DSCF3.jpg and some are csl1.jpg (example)

I have used this convention and viewed it with various browsers, some
with the capitals display and others do not ,

Can anyone explain what is wrong ?

Assuming the website is being hosted on Ubuntu server as a simple files
based website (no content management system) then the filesystem is case
sensitive so you need to be linking to the same case as the filename. If
you provide a link to the site here we might have a better stab at
explaining what is going on.

Check that the filenames specified in the image links match the case
of the actual files. Then check that the html is valid using the w3c
html validator. If the site is publicly accessible you can give the
url to the validator, otherwise paste the complete html into it.

virtualbox

2012-09-19 Thread Peter Vágner

Hello,
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit as the main OS. I have installed
virtual box using software centre and checked all the additions during
setup e.g. 32 bit kernel support and network ethernet driver.
At the end of a virtualbox install I have just rebooted the machine to
make sure everything is in its place.
Then after the boot I have createda new machine in the virtualbox and I
am currently trying to boot a daily live 32 bit image of ubuntu 12:10
inside it.
The virtual machine launches I am even getting informative messages
regarding direct mouse and keyboard capture but I am not getting that
usual drum sounds coming from the guest OS.
Is my install of virtualbox screwed or ubuntu 12.10 has changed
something in this regard?
I have also waited some 10 minutes in case and pressed ctrl+s without
any audible difference.
In the virtual machine settings window I have audio turned on and set to
pulse.

Any possible hints?

Is anyone running 12.04 in virtualbox with sound output?

oh btw on the host OS I can see vbox channel while looking into the
pulseaudio volume control.

Greetings

Peter

one of the two LFE devices, I can try it again later and provide the
exact key sequence to do so. I didn't tag that bug as an a11y bug
because it is an audio totally broken for everyone bug rather than
orca specific issue even though it does mean that Quantal is basically
untestable in virtualbox for blind users. It does boot OK when testing
on real hardware and you get the drums and ctrl+s starts orca as normal.
Ubiquity has changed a bit but I can get all the way through it without
cheating and turning my monitor on, I will do a full keystroke guide and
audio/video at some point pre-release.

Hi Alan,
I managed to install 12.10 beta 1 in virtualbox 4.2 with sighted
assistance.
After installation, I managed to configure, with sighted assistance,
the sound so that orca is speaking.
The problem is that I have no sound in the login. No orca, no drums.
After I type the password and press the enter key, orca talks normally.

12.10 Documentation String Freeze -- Sept. 25, 2012

2012-09-19 Thread Kate Stewart
Dear Documentation and Translation teams,

Given some of the VERY late landing code with key features that
impacts the IDEs for 12.10, holding to a documentation string freeze
date [1] of 9/20 just doesn't make sense. To give enough window for
getting the latest features in screen shots and documented, we'll be
resetting the documentation deadline to next Tuesday 9/25 [3].

This is going to unfortunately cut down on the time available for
translations [2]. To keep everyone efficient, David will send out an
email tomorrow summarizing what is unlikely to change, and what
translations should not start on until after the Documentation String
Freeze[1] occurs.

Thanks for your cooperation and patience as we work through this.

breaking freezes and last minute-itus

2012-09-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think before making a request people need to consider whether their request
is really so vital that it's worth delaying the release of the 12.10, and
creating a lot more work for everyone.

It's good to see people have such passion for their work that they are prepared
to argue so strongly for their part in the huge project.  However, would it
really hurt for some of them to stand down for a month or so and then get
their change into the 11.04?  If they could wait a little then the quality of
the way it's handled by subsequent processes would be increased.

Consider how many news articles you read that are full of speculation about
what might happen.  Compare against the number of news articles that grab your
attention about what happened a long time ago.  Fro example, with film
releases.  Magazines have endless articles BEFORE a release giving tantalising
glimpses of what might be in the film and the livesloves of actresses, actors
and others involved in the film.  After the film the articles drop-off fast and
relate to boring stats about hoiw much money it made (or didn't) and how many
people went to see it on opening night.  Try finding an article in a new
magazine about a film released say 1 or 2 months ago.  No-one cares after the
fact.  At least not in a positive way.

By rushing in at the last minute (or even later) you consign your work to the
no-one cares anymore category before they have even seen it.  MUCH better to
deliberately hold back.  LET articles slate how 'badly' you did your work in
this release (chances are it wasn't erally sooo bad and might even appear
quite good to people that haven't seen you new version).  Then push your
request at the beginning of the next cycle to let people work on showing it
off.  Make a press-release about it.  Get people writing articles that talk
about it or at least mention it.  Write to anyone that you noticed grumbling so
they have an excuse to get a new article published talking about the remarkable
turn-around.

It might seem exciting to you to get it in at the last minute but to everyone
else it's a Pita and a bore.  If your work is boring then sure, push it at the
last minute instead of waiting for the next cycle.

The questions for each person making a request (imo) are
1.  is it worth delaying the release of Ubuntu and are you willing to help all
the subsequent teams deal with side-issues such as checking translations in
hundreds of languages?
2.  is it so important that you don't care if no-one out in the world (outside
the ubuntu teams) ever really notices the changes?

Regards from
Tom :)

PLAY ON LINUX
и в настройках обнови WINE, перезагрузи и попробуй поставить драйвера с
диска. Успехов.

[Bug 1052924] [NEW] winbind init script not LSB compliant

2012-09-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

winbind init script is not LSB compliant: the status function returns 4
instead of 3 when the daemon is stopped

repro:
apt-get install winbind

this happens because the status_of_proc call has wrong parameter
ordering

[Bug 1052928] [NEW] launchpad bug report package option not respected

2012-09-19 Thread Maxxer
Public bug reported:

1. search for a bug report and pick one i.e. from the samba ubuntu package
2. press the Report new bug link
3. you're asked for the summary, enter some information and click No I need to
report a new bug
4. change the package name from the proposed samba (or whatever) to another
value, either manually or by using the Choose... popup
5. complete the bugreport and press Submit

result: bug is assigned to package samba (or whatever was proposed in
the package field).

relative bug: Press Choose, search for launchpad, on page 3 select

launchpad does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package. If
you're unsure, please select I don't know

[Bug 1052932] [NEW] [FFE] merge upstream v1.2.0

2012-09-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

The quantal archive currently has qemu-kvm 1.1-rc1 merged from Debian.
This has a severe bug (1040033) which is fixed in 1.2. In addition, 1.2
is a stable branch, which will make future maintenance easier. It would
be great if we could have 1.2 in the archive.

[Bug 1052932] Re: [FFE] merge upstream v1.2.0

2012-09-19 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I am currently using 1.2 from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
virt/+archive/virt-daily-upstream/+packages and it fixes bug #1040033
for me. I will continue to test it and report back any issues if I find
them. Assuming testing shows it is ok, the security team would like to
see 1.2 in the archive because as Serge said, 1.2 is a stable release
and what we have in the archive now is not. It is my understanding there
have been a lot of commits since 1.1rc and it is important for security
maintenance of the package that we be on a stable release of qemu-kvm.

+ [rationale]
+ The MAAS project is looking to use isc-dhcp-server almost exactly like
eucalyptus did, and as a result would need some changes to this profile. In
speaking with jdstrand [1], he suggested that #include isc-dhcpd.d was the

+ [test case]
+ Just make sure the apparmor profile gets updated and doesn't fail to load.
Proper testing will have to be done once the mass change lands.
+
+ [regression potential]
+ Was tested on quantal and it's already widely used apparmor syntax, so the
worst I can think of is that the line just won't work and won't include the
profile once it lands in maas.

[Bug 1050492] [NEW] MAAS uses the 'guest' account to communicate with RabbitMQ

2012-09-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

None of the BROKER_* settings are defined in celeryconfig; that means
that the 'guest' account is used by MAAS to send messages through
RabbitMQ. That might have been OK while everything was local but now
that we will want the cluster controllers to connect remotely we need to
change that.

That might still be OK for a dev instance but I suggest we make that
more explicit by setting the right values in the config file
(BROKER_PASSWORD='guest', etc).

Once the fix is landed upstream, the packaging will need to be changed
to create a RabbitMQ user and configure
/etc/maas/maas_local_settings.py.

[Bug 1052664] Re: 12.10 cloud-init injects comment into /etc/hostname

and, in fact, that *is* ok:

So something else must be reading that and setting the hostname.

I built 3.6.6 from Debian and that worked fine on this machine (running
precise).

[Bug 1052985] [NEW] No reference to configuration file in autofs manual

2012-09-19 Thread A. Scheuer
Public bug reported:

The autofs script can be configured by a file (/etc/default/autofs in my
distribution), but the autofs manual does not contain any reference to
this file. In my distribution, the reference can be found in the
auto.master manual, but it is not the case anymore in the manual given
by autofs.org. I did not looked to this manual at first, as I am quite
sure my auto.master file is correct, I just needed to configure the
autofs script... Which took me a long time, due to this feature...

[Bug 1050492] Re: MAAS uses the 'guest' account to communicate with RabbitMQ

2012-09-19 Thread Raphaël Badin
The packaging needs to be fixed only when we will have a separate
package for the cluster controller. If we land the branch
lp:~rvb/maas/packaging.set-rabbitmq-creds now, it will break the
communication between the master cluster controller and the region
controller since the master cluster controller currently rely on the
fact that the 'guest' RabbitMQ account is used.

[Bug 1052989] [NEW] Enlistment fails

2012-09-19 Thread Robie Basak
Public bug reported:

When I run sudo maas-enlist --serverurl http://maas-server-
ip:5240/api/1.0/nodes/, the maas-enlist commands exits with a zero
status but doesn't actually enlist.

On the server, I see the log entry [19/Sep/2012 15:06:24] POST /http
://maas-server-ip:5240/api/1.0/nodes/ HTTP/1.1 302 0, which looks
wrong. There is nothing after this which I'd expect for a 302 response.
But normally an entry looks like POST: [19/Sep/2012 15:06:13] POST
/api/1.0/nodegroups/master/ HTTP/1.1 200 15, so it looks like maas-
enlist is making an invalid request.

This is on maas-enlist 0.4+bzr29-0ubuntu1.

Sorry, what an obvious thing to forget!

munin-common 1.4.6-3ubuntu3.1

I figured they'd probably have been fixed upstream, but it'd be good to

[Bug 1052664] Re: hostname intermittently contains comment from cloud-init

2012-09-19 Thread Scott Moser
This seems racey. Ben and I both report having sen this on server build of
20120919, but only intermittently.
To add to the oddness, on 20120919 desktop (where it seems to reproduce more
frequently), I moved /bin/hostname to /bin/hostname.real, then:
$ cat /bin/hostname
#!/bin/sh

if [ $# -ne 0 ]; then
   {
   echo == pid=$$ ppid=$PPID JOB=$UPSTART_JOB: $* ==
   cat /proc/$PPID/cmdline
   echo
   } /run/hostname.log 21
fi
exec /bin/hostname.real $@
$ cat /run/hostname.log
== pid=212 ppid=1 JOB=hostname: -b -F /etc/hostname ==
/sbin/init

so during boot the only thing that called /bin/hostname was the upstart job
'hostname'.
However, just running 'sudo hostname -b -F /etc/hostname' behaves correctly.

[Bug 1053020] [NEW] SRU: fix 1042758

2012-09-19 Thread Thomas Herve
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1042758 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1042758

Public bug reported:

This is a SRU request for cloud-init to be updated in precise.

Bug #1042758 prevents people using cloud-init and Landscape to
automatically register instances: the configuration will be updated, but
Landscape won't start, thus forcing people to either write additional
code or manually go the instances.

To reproduce the problem, create a cloud-init configuration with Landscape
credentials:
#cloud-config
landscape:
 - account_name: $host_account
 - computer_title: Test instance
 - cloud: true

Using the released version, the configuration will be written, but the
client won't start and the instance won't register. With the fixed
version, the client will start and register to Landscape hosted.

The change is minimal and only impact the Landscape portion of the code.
https://code.launchpad.net/~therve/cloud-init/fix-landscape-
config/+merge/122870 contains the relevant changeset.

[Bug 706706] Re: Can't use Norton Ghost under Ubuntu KVM

2012-09-19 Thread acornblue
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

  Hi,

I can't use Norton Ghost under Ubuntu KVM, whereas the same version of
kvm under Debian launches Norton Ghost just fine.

  Info of kvm under Debian:

  $ dpkg -l | grep kvm
ii qemu-kvm 0.12.5+dfsg-3 Full virtualization on x86 hardware

- $ cat /etc/issue
+ $ cat /etc/issue
  Debian GNU/Linux squeeze/sid \n \l

- $ uname -rm
+ $ uname -rm
  2.6.33-grml64 x86_64

  Info of kvm under Ubuntu:

  $ apt-cache policy qemu-kvm
  qemu-kvm:
- Installed: 0.12.5+noroms-0ubuntu7.1
- Candidate: 0.12.5+noroms-0ubuntu7.1
- Version table:

+ 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages

(I've just upgraded it to the latest version and tried again, same
  problem)

The symptom is while kvm was lauching NG, it failed, and rebooted all
over again. I've tried many times and I've also tried both Norton Ghost
2003 and Norton Ghost 8.3. Same symptom.

  Actual command used is,

- kvm -m 1024 -smp 2 -usbdevice tablet -hda hda -cdrom /path/to
+  kvm -m 1024 -smp 2 -usbdevice tablet -hda hda -cdrom /path/to
  /NortonGhost-Version.iso -boot d

The same command, using the same hda cdrom, works just fine under
  Debian.

  Please investigate

  Thanks

PS. if you don't have a Norton Ghost iso file, you can try
  Hiren.BootCD.8.6.iso. Works the same.
