Mostly depends on what features you need.

For pure mail server management zimbra or inter7's vqadmin+qmailadmin are
probably your best bet.

Others like ispconfig and webmin provide a lot more functionality, but aren't
very straightforward to use.

Overall, adore the laptop, fabulous spec for the price, keyboard is

and whilst it's certainly not an ultrabook it's not unweildy either.

It's always the wireless interface that needs skilled attention, while
installing Ubuntu itself needs no skill at all. And as machines get down to
notebook size, more and more of them have no network cable interfaces, so it's
wireless or nothing (not to mention Bluetooth, which I haven't even grasped the
purpose of yet).

Would it not be good to put our foot down and say no to products with not open
drivers or purchase a usb wifi that is free and cheap and supported by the
kernel? Instead of giving hits to thier web pages to dowload thier drivers?

An important thing to remember when buying laptops is that the wireless
chipset is usual a mini/micro/whatever PCI card and can be swapped out for
something with better support. When I run into a weird/Dell/Broadcom wifi
chipset with bad Linux support, I buy the last-generation Intel chipset on
eBay for £10 and toss the old in a pile somewhere. It's cheaper and easier
than you think it is. Certainly easier than compiling a driver every few
 weeks.

I dunno, doesn't seem a huge burden to me - the driver's in a handy
folder - it takes all of 20 secs to compile - prefer it to opening a
brand new laptop with a perfectly good Realtek chip (and I'm clumsy with

You could already try the 3.8 kernel from the mainline ppa if you want

On second thoughts, a Wireless Witch would be better still. But it doesn't
have to be automated; just a coherent, start-to-finish set of instructions
that a human can follow, that would be fine. As I said, soon laptops will
have become notebooks and the network cable option will no longer exist, so
there will be a general need for this.

OK sorry - it sounds grim but it's really easy to compile it once you've
managed to find the wretched driver in the first place. Verbatim
instructions plus chatty asides below cos it's Friday and I'm about to
quit for the week wh!

If your chip's the same as mine it's easy cos I know where the driver
is, if not, you'll have to track it down (if I happen to read my email
lists at the time I'll help).

First you have to find out which wireless chip you have. Open a shell
(ctl+alt+t) type:

lspci

at the prompt - it'll spit out a list of PCI devices among which the ID
of your wifi chip should be found. It might not say 'wifi' but it's the
networking chip that *isn't* ethernet. Google with the chip's model for
the driver. On my Zoostorm, lspci lists the driver like this:

02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8723

So in my case I googled this string: realtek 8723 driver linux and
found a bunch of people disagreeing confusingly in various forums -
after reading and inwardly digesting I gleaned that there are currently
two versions of the driver, one for kernel 3.2 and one for kernel 3.5.
To find out which one you want, do this command to find out which kernel
you have:

uname -r

To which my Ubuntu 12.04 replies: 3.2.0-37-generic

(No, Alan, I'm not going to upgrade my kernel to a release candidate for
3.8 on my main production laptop lol - I'm going to wait for Ubuntu 13.04)

So this means I need the kernel 3.2 driver

Found this driver in a very helpful person's post at the bottom of the
page here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/139632/wireless-card-realtek-rtl8723ae-bt-is-not-recognized
- it's shared in someone's Dropbox but there's testimony from someone
who'd already used the driver without having their laptop eaten by
monsters so I downloaded it. I can confirm that no disaster occurred
after installing it. If your chip is the same, type this command in your
terminal to download it and unpack it (it's all one line, the email is
wrapping it):

wget -O-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57056576/DRIVERS/REALTEK/rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514.2012.tar.gz
| tar -xz

Once you've got your mitts on the driver the hard bit is done and you
won't have to do it again as long as you still have kernel 3.2 (this
probably won't change on Ubuntu 12.04 - the upgrades are incremental but
the version stays the same). Now change directory to the driver's folder
with th 'cd' command:

cd /path/to/driver

The real command will probably look something like this because the
driver folder has a somewhat overly informative name:
cd
/home/myname/Downloads/rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514.2012

Once you're in there, type these commands one by one, waiting till
Ubuntu finishes chewing each command:

sudo make
sudo make install

Then do this command to make Ubuntu load it (it'll load automatically on
subsequent reboots):

sudo modprobe rtl8723e

And you're done. Ubuntu immediately starts scanning for the network.

On subsequent recompiles, assuming you kept the driver folder, all you
have to do is change to the folder and run just the 3 simple commands:
make, make-install and modprobe rtl8723e - if you can't remember the
module number (I can't!) the commands should still be loitering about in
the BASH history - scroll up with the up key till you find them or just
make a note of the command somewhere so you can just paste it in again
;) If stuck, this command:

lsmod | grep wifi

will give you the driver module's ID: rtl8723e

It's mildly annoying but pretty quick. Any attempt to automate it IMHO
will most likely result in a wasted afternoon smacking your forehead
against the wall plus possible remedial cos you've made a mess.

Or you can take Alan's advice and upgrade your kernel to 3.8 release
candidate and see if the driver's really there, for the good of the
community ;)

So, less confusingly chatty recap:

1. find and download the driver

2. change to driver's folder

Brian is right here -- it just means Jackson is running the same release
he originally installed -- he's never upgraded it to a newer version.
For instance, my box has been upgraded each since precise I think (I'm
on raring now), but if I were to re-install using a raring cd right now,
I would get the same message. For bug reporting purposes, those upgrades
could be interacting with something that got changed or removed, or

The people who actually take the time out to test do deserve a better

The UpgradeStatus field in your apport report is an attempt to determine
if the system being reported about has upgraded from one release of
Ubuntu to another. This can be helpful in determining factors that may
affect bugs.

Perhaps somebody would like to take the initiative and document fields
commonly found in apport reports. One way to get started doing this
would be to review a crash report in /var/crash or create a bug report
using 'apport-cli' with the --save option. However, any apport package
hook can add arbitrary keys and values to apport reports so any list
would not be comprehensive. Regardless, if someone wants to do this
I'll be happy to answer any questions regarding keys and their meanings.

Subject: Reporting a bug - Unrecognized USB in raring laptop.

Hello QA,

Today, my friend came over and visited my house momentarily to edit a file
in his USB stick. I allowed him to use my Ubuntu raring laptop, and, not
being much of an Ubuntu user himself, he was a little confused of not
seeing the usb icon appear in nautilus.

A few seconds later, I came to the conclusion that my computer doesn't
recognize external memory. I tried it with my own USB stick, and it didn't
work. Running *lsblk* in the terminal too didn't reveal a USB.

I've been reading the Reporting Bugs wiki page on Ubuntu wiki to determine
the type of bug, but I'm still confused. What sort of bug involves
unrecognized hardware? Also, how can I identify the package or the source
of this problem, so I may report it?

After that, I noticed that when reporting bugs, the reporter might happen
to file a duplicate report. Since the report bug search for titles seems
inadequate, how can I search for a potentially duplicate report? I ask
this because a few times before, some reports may not include the key words
I put in, yet somehow, they describe my problem more specifically.

I would really like to report a bug the QA way. Thanks.

Sincerely,

John Kim

gvfs-fuse

2013-02-01 Thread Michael Terry
Is there much reason to install gvfs-fuse by default? The comment in
the seed is let non-GNOME apps see GVFS via fuse.

But it causes gvfsd-fuse to run all the time, taking about 700k PSS and
2.7M RSS.

I think non-technical users are not likely to manually be pointing apps
at ~/.gvfs/*. But fuse also lets apps that ask GIO for a path for a
remote URI be transparently given a ~/.gvfs path.

Do we feel like there are many apps likely to do this that don't declare
a recommends on gvfs-fuse? Are there any apps likely to do that in the
default install? Firefox, Thunderbird, and LibreOffice all appear to
talk native GIO these days.

If we do need it for default apps, I imagine it could be made to launch
on demand.

[nexus] Weekly summary 2013-02-01

2013-02-01 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey everybody,

This week was a pretty good and productive one for the nexus/make
ubuntu fit for mobile, so I figured that it would be good to
communicate a bit about the great work that landed in raring and
encourage others to join us!

Improvements that landed in raring included:
- Working screen rotation on the nexus
- Working bluetooth for the nexus
- Several leaks fixed in our desktop components (libdbusmenu,
update-notifier, upower, whoopsie, ...)

- More accurate reporting of the power usage/battery charge of the nexus
- Improvement to the cpufreq scheduler
- Lightdm PPS going from 25.7M to 0.6M
- Some processes were changed to exit-on-idle and be restarted-on-demand
rather than running all the time (signond, signon-ui)

- We saw code optimization in several of our desktop services
- gnome-settings-daemon plugins got reviewed and some have been turned
off in the default installation (with some extra ones in the nexus setup)
- some progress was made on the sound not working until using
suspend/resume bug
- gnome-online-account was dropped from the default installation, which
should be one less process running on an Unity desktop (it's not needed
there since ubuntu-online-account is used instead)

- probably many others I overlooked or forgot to mention ;-)

Thanks all for the great work!

ogra reported during the weekly IRC meeting that the idle memory use on
his nexus when from 600M to under 400M with the recent efforts,
impressive isn't it?

Let's built on the momentum and make the next weeks as productive as
this one! ;-)

Thanks,

área de contabilidade, os quais as vezes não estamos muito acostumados. O
que é facilmente superado, não terás problemas. Ler o tutorial do programa,
o qual vem junto, ajuda a acelerar este processo, como entender os
conceitos de ativos, passivos e etc.

[Bug 1112242] Re: Causes a crash after you open more than two browsers

2013-02-01 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also include version information on the packages affected. You
can supply this automatically with the command apport-collect 1112242

Thanks!

2013-02-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The variable used to determine whether or not it is packaged was not

A typo in the verb that instructs the package whether or not it in a package

The verb should be WAXLINUXAGENT_PACKAGED=1 not WALINUXAGENT_PACKAGED=1

This results in two version of the walinuxagent being executed.

[Bug 1111690] Re: [SRU] walinuxagent IsPackaged() logic is broken, runs two instances of waagent

2013-02-01 Thread Ben Howard
** Description changed:

- The variable used to determine whether or not it is packaged was not
- being exported. This results in two version of waaagent running.
+ [Impact]
+ All Azure instances that upgrade to agent 1.3 will have two versions of
waagent (the script responisable for bootstrap on Azure) running. This may
cause a race condition in the bootstrap, causing rebundled images to fail
provisioning.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ New Image test (built with -proposed packages)
+- Confirm that /etc/init/waagent is missing
+- Confirm that dpkg -S waagent is present in /var/log/waagent.log
+ Upgrade Image test:
+- upgrade image using update in main
+- Confirm that two agents are running:
+ status waagent
+ status walinuxagent
+- upgrade to -proposed
+- Confirm waagent init job is missing
+ status waagent (should return status: Unknown job: waagent)
+- Confirm that dpkg -s waagent is present in /var/log/waagent.log
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ The regression potential is low, as this patch more intelligently determines
whether or not walinuxagent is installed by using dpkg.

  ---
- Original bug report
+ Updated bug report:
+
+ The variable used to determine whether or not it is packaged was not
+ being exported properly. This results in two version of waaagent
+ running.

has the incorrect verb.

ACK: I've tested upgrades from walinuxagent_1.2-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
I've tested upgrades from walinuxagent_1.3-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

I've tested the actual package itself. Looks like a good fix. (Still no
way to reproduce original issue the SRU fixes as reported by Microsoft
but I've seen no degradation of any azure instances so nothing has
regressed.)

Fix bug 1061665, --force_hosts hint for launching instance updates

--force_hosts no longer available in Folsom, have to indicate
an availability zone instead.

Patchset attempts to explain how to get the availability zone
name that you want. Please review.

Patchset addresses comments about zone versus host, adding
new section rather than replacing host section completely.

[Bug 1003842] Re: dnsmasq sometimes fails to resolve private names in networks with non-equivalent nameservers

2013-02-01 Thread Steve Riley
I started using my employer's OpenVPN today and encountered name
resolution problems. From my research, this here bug appears to be
plaguing me, as well (I'm on 12.10). Commenting the line dns=dnsmasq in
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf does fix the problem. However,
_all_ DNS is routed out the VPN in this case. I rather like the idea of
splitting the DNS responsibilities.

I see there's still the unresolved question of whether re-enabling
--strict-order will suffice as a workaround, since 12.10 relies on DBus
to populate the nameservers. Is there any extra information on this?

Sorry, I am not using automysqlbackup, we have a few line script that does
it, and I somehow thought this was a general mysql (mysqldump, to be
precise) bug.

 hi,

 please post you /etc/default/automysqlbackup, and
tell which version of automysqlbackup you use.

 Title:
mysqldump: Got error: 1142: SELECT,LOCK TABL command denied to user
'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' for table 'cond_instances' when using
   LOCK TABLES

Status in “automysqlbackup” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   Release: 12.04
   automysqlbackup:
 Installed: 2.6+debian-2
 Candidate: 2.6+debian-2
 Version table:
*** 2.6+debian-2 0
   500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe amd64
 Packages
   100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

After a remove --purge, reinstall of automysqlbackup, and configure in
/etc/defaults/automysqlbackup, I am emailed the following error when cron
 runs /usr/sbin/automysqlbackup:

mysqldump: Got error: 1142: SELECT,LOCK TABL command denied to user
'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' for table 'cond_instances' when using
   LOCK TABLES

it seems that the default on ubuntu is to use the user debian-sys-
maint to run this backup, however debian-sys-maint doesn't have full
permissions. Some say that these tables are not necessary to backup
and recommend the flag --skip-add-locks OR --skip-lock-tables:

   http://serverfault.com/questions/268566/cant-backup-the-mysql-table-
   with-mysqldump-select-lock-tabl-command-denied-for

I managed to get the error to go away by adding --skip-lock-tables
   to /usr/sbin/automysqlbackup:

   if [ -z ${USERNAME} -o -z ${PASSWORD} ] ; then
   mysqldump --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf $NEWOP\
   T --skip-lock-tables $1 $2
   else
   mysqldump --user=$USERNAME --password=$PASSWORD --host\
   =$DBHOST --skip-lock-tables $NEWOPT $1 $2
   fi
   return 0

[Bug 878767] Re: No GUI option to change week-starting day

2013-02-01 Thread starko
Gunnar, just like Andrei i find your reasoning flawed.

As for ability to set arbitrary time formats and week starting days ect
- more and more people live and work in a global world where the lines
between time zones, customs, working environments become more and more
blurred. Think of international companies with offices all over the
world that might use en_US while needing to work with the local time and
week conventions. Similar applies to millions of local companies that
hire international workforce...

A dns-options option in /e/n/i is indeed not currently supported. Do
you need this?

The current practice is to put an options line in

[Bug 1098697] Re: High Battery discharge rate when Laptop is off.

2013-02-01 Thread Raymond Dalgleish
Although the issue has been solved it has been through the use of a
workaround, rather than a true fix.

The workaround involves an edit to /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/disable_wol
AS WELL AS installing ethtool. Simply installing ethtool does not in
itself provide a fix for the problem. Somebody with more expertise in
scripting would need to explain to me the intended function of the
disable_wol script, but it's clearly intended to take input from
somewhere to either enable or disable wol. The edit which produces the
fix should, presumably, not be required at all. With the edit in place,
the script always keeps wol disabled irrespective of any argument
directed to the script.

Can somebody explain the intended function of disable_wol in simple
language? That might get us closer to understanding the true nature of
the problem.

Thanks.

[Bug 91389] Re: Please add support for more than one VPN simultaneously

2013-02-01 Thread Bart Verwilst
cweiske is correct, when multiple VPN's are enabled through gnome-
control-center, they are all marked as on in the systray as well. When
enabling a VPN through the systray, it disables the rest. Sounds like an
easy thing to fix... :(

[Bug 1023755] Re: Precise kernel locks up while dd to /dev/mapper files 1Gb (was: Unable to delete volume)

2013-02-01 Thread Stefan Bader
Thiago, this plays a bit into the issue. But mainly this is a result of changes
in the writeback code that is doing some complex throttling based on memory
limits and estimated drive speeds. This has some issues with the used setup
because we now got two backing devices that are not independent and require
further memory to proceed.
When writing the dd onto the snapshot, every snapshot chunk number of blocks
will create an exception. That means for the first block touching a new chunk,
the chunk gets copied to the snapshot COW storage and the mapping table (on the
same device) needs to be updated. Then again, when being processed by the loop
thread there will be related IO generated (access time updates, journal).
This can be observed even with deadline elevator and more recent kernel
versions. 3.8 seemed much better but still had it. Though this could just be a
different timing while filling buffers. So maybe the dd process gets normally
blocked sooner. But its hard to find specific changes there.
Right now, I am trying to get to a stage that would make Precise at least
usable. Right now there is one change that seems to at least keep the whole
system from hanging. But still the dd process will not complete because the
loop0 thread that is responsible for moving the requests from the LV side to
the fs is blocked because the backing dev is assumed to have no bandwidth, but
it has no bandwidth because it never gets something to do...

[Bug 1112303] [NEW] Writer: Insert-menu entries not working on recurring use

Public bug reported:

On recurring use the following entries of the insert menu of the writer

Maybe others?
This happens usually after the function was used once. On recurring use the

[Bug 1111470] Re: Precise kernel not bootable under Xen - alloc_l1_table

2013-02-01 Thread Stefan Bader
Bob, I was mentioning the versions not so much because it might be a
development version but because I suspect there is some confusion going
on between 3.2.0 and 3.5.0 and their abi versions (the number behind the
'-'). Sometimes better to be very anal there in asking to avoid more
confusion. ;-)

Bob, Mike, yeah I had been changing my test machine from using dom0_mem
to allow it to use all memory but it did still work. I somewhat suspect
that this could be related how this machine (or class of machines) set
up their BIOS tables.

Konrad, usually those would be available at
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/l/linux/. Unfortunately we, err, got a
slight problem of occasionally loosing them. Since they are big there is
a cleanup task at work. And that is sometimes a bit over-eager. I did a
compile with 3.2.0-36.57 (seems that while not looking we went ahead and
3.2.0-37.58 is current). Here is the relevant snippet from System.map:

81641543 t set_page_prot
81641581 t xen_remap_domain_mfn_range.part.21
8164158c t pin_pagetable_pfn
816415e5 t p2m_top_index.part.3

So it seems to be pin_pagetable_pfn. But I will attach the whole map
too. I am hesitating a bit for the other files since they are so big,
but if you need anything, let me know.

[Bug 1077965] Re: qt4 applications over X forward run slower than with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

2013-02-01 Thread Michel Albert
We updated to 12.04 yesterday and experience the exact same degradation.

Is there any additional information available yet? Changing the QT4
style did not change anything.

[Bug 1106216] Re: Laptop hangs and shows a black screen with a backtrace

2013-02-01 Thread Jordi Coma Garcia
Is not the same bug, but I had a problem with the screen and intel
graphic card, at the kernel 3.8.0-r5 they solved. Try to update with the
mainline kernel to try if it happends.

[Bug 1058764] Re: bamfdaemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_interfaces()

2013-02-01 Thread Blaž Triglav
Just to add a piece of information, for me this is only happening on
laptops I upgraded directly from 12.04 to 12.10. On a clean install,
this bug does not happen.

The cancel workaround does not work here.
