[Fwd: [pulseaudio-discuss] Wish list]

2013-03-20 Thread Len Ovens
I thought you might like to see this too. These are the changes I would
like to see in pulse.

 Original Message
Subject: [pulseaudio-discuss] Wish list
From:Len Ovens l...@ovenwerks.net
Date:Wed, March 20, 2013 9:55 am
To: pulseaudio-disc...@freedesktop.org
--

Here are some things I wish pulseaudio could do. I think they make sense
:) These are not things I expect next release or all at once for that
matter. These all have to do with jacksink/source, jackdbus-detect and
pavucontrol, at least from the user POV, the reality may very well be
different. I am fully aware that pulseaudio/jack interoperability is not
the highest priority and have no disagreement with that.

- jacksink/source - relaxed latency compared to jack. I may be wrong, but
it seems that pulseaudio gets forced to whatever jack's latency is when
connected. This is hard on system resources and it makes an internal audio
interface that is only connected to pulseaudio determine the lowest
latency a jack device can use. I would suggest that Pulseaudio continue to
use it's own latency and jacksink/source add buffering to match that. My
thought is that pulseaudio has reasonable latency for phone work already
and syncing multi-track recordings is not a normal pulseaudio use anyway.

- if the module-jackdbus-detect module is loaded then treat it like a
device. In pavucontrol under the Configuration tab there should be an
entry for jacksink/source with the same kinds of options: stereo duplex,
4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 5.1 (all with stereo in) and off (off means I like having
bridging available, but don't want jacksink/source to be loaded at this
time). There is no reason I can see for more channels than desktop apps
are likely to use. 12 input channels give a bunch of aux inputs that I
don't think any pulse-aware app can use anyway. I think 7.1 might be the
max needed for outputs. I don't think there are any desktop apps that
expect more than stereo in though (I could be wrong). The one non-standard
option I would like to see is auto-default. That is when jacksink/source
load they become the default device. Oh and one more :) (this is getting
messy) auto connect on or off... thinking about this, I would do one
stereo duplex-no connect and leave the rest with the default. I think
the stereo situation is the only one where no-auto connect makes sense.
Would a mono channel save anything system resources wise? I can think of
uses for that too.

- default migration - I don't know if this is possible. It seems to happen
now under some circumstances. If I am streaming to a card and jack steals
it the stream is jammed but I can move it to jacksink and it keeps
playing. If I set jacksink/source as default and have a stream going there
it seems if I stop jack that stream moves to the old default device (or
maybe system default) and if I restart jack after that, the stream then
moves back to jacksink/source. (Cool!) So what I am suggesting is, if a
device gets taken away at the same time jack shows up, assume jack is now
that device and shift the stream there. Being able to set jack as default
even when not loaded would work for this too, but then keeping a
sub-default may be needed too... ie. in the case where system default goes
to a card with no speakers. The easiest fix for this (I use it) is to just
turn that device off in pavucontrol. I have a card es1370 that I use
only for MIDI, but some people have an internal card that can't be turned
off in bios.

Anyway, I have been very happy with how pulseaudio has worked for me. The
default of two channels works great and I may default to connect=no as
well... I use channels 9/10 for input (I have a nice spdif mic pre),
though I still use 1 and 2 for outputs. There are already good jack tools
for auto connecting for me in this way. I think I have listed my wishes in
order of importance, however, I expect changes to happen in order of ease
of implementation.

I have tried to be clear, but even though English is my first language,
explaining things is not my best talent :) Feel free to ask questions.

commonly intend by forking: instead, it means branching off the

This is what all WebKit ports do.

Let's try not to panic whenever we read the fork word in a document

Backwards compatibility is essential and I will not rename current.
But I suppose I could rename latest to latest-untested. Anyone

I deliberately changed the meaning of current. We want to encourage

One of Dmitrijs' suggestions on IRC was current-proposed, which has a

build that has passed automatic smoke-tests. The latter is not yet
implemented, so current is always the same as latest right
now, but I hope to get this working soon.

While I love the idea I cannot think of more confusing words. Could
we perhaps reconsider this to be something that does not require a
 README file around?

Hm, this came out of UDS ...

If backwards compatibility is not important (the name 'current' can
be discarded) then I would propose using lastes-tested and
 latest-untested

Backwards compatibility is essential and I will not rename current.
But I suppose I could rename latest to latest-untested. Anyone
 else?

When I read that the outcome of the rolling release discussion is a
symlink pointing to the release in development, I had no doubt that it
will be called unstable, because that's how Debian calls the same
thing.

This is about ISOs and other installation media on cdimage.ubuntu.com,
not about the archive / release names.
Regardless we will not use unstable or any other debian names, as
that has a high potential of clash as both ubuntu debian
repositories are very alike, and the archive names is what essentially
separates the two apart.

Firstly, this is not really directly related to cdimage naming.

Secondly, raring is *not* analogous to Debian unstable, although
previous releases were. Since it goes through automatic installability
checks, it is closer to Debian testing. However, since it doesn't have
the enforced propagation delay of testing, it's really not quite like
either, and would be better off with a different name so that people
don't draw unwarranted conclusions.

One of Dmitrijs' suggestions on IRC was current-proposed, which has a
nice analogy with raring-proposed. I would tend to simplify this to
just proposed. How does this sound?

current-proposed is less confusing than proposed. It tells me that
current-proposed will become current after some defined rules.
proposed could become anything.

Re: cdimage.ubuntu.com latest/current symlinks

2013-03-20 Thread Colin Watson
OK, well, I had to pick *some* colour to paint the bikeshed. I found
Robie Basak's argument compelling enough:

rbasak Nobody wants to hit something that says pending on its own
if they don't know why it's pending, since it's implied that it will
  change under their feet

So I've renamed latest to pending. However, to save having to
explain their meanings, I've also added an .htaccess file with suitable
descriptions. (These may not appear on all mirrors of
cdimage.ubuntu.com, depending on server configuration, but having them
on cdimage.ubuntu.com itself should solve most of the problem.) For
example, see:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/

Other daily build directories will populate themselves with the same
.htaccess file along with new builds over the next few days.

sponsoring queue: please try to help cleaning the backlog before raring

2013-03-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey everybody,

I know everyone is crazy busy... but it would be good if everybody could
do a bit, before the raring freeze, to help clearly the backlog.

The current queue is a bit over 50 items:
http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/

There are quite some good work in there, including some FFe that are
approved and waiting to land, it would be shame to not have those
improvements in raring because we didn't get to sponsor them.

I'm sure if everybody spend an hour on the queue this week we can clear
most of the backlog by friday ;-)

Thanks,
Sebastien Bacher

Update from the Ubuntu Development/Packaging Guide

2013-03-20 Thread Daniel Holbach
Hello everybody,

yesterday we got the fourth language of the development/packaging guide
online, which is great news! Thanks to everybody involved!

Here's a quick update of things.

Approved languages (= 70%):
 - Spanish (99%)
 - Russian (85%)
 - Brazilian Portuguese (74%)

Work in progress:
 - German (49%)
 - Japanese (14%)
 - French ( 8%)
 - Indonesian ( 5%)
 - Dutch( 4%)

That said, we have many languages with MANY translations in the Needs
Review stage. If you can review and approve them, that'd be fantastic.
Among them are (= 10 strings): Italian, Turkish, Japanese, Greek,
French, Macedonian, Croatian, Russian, Indonesian, Swedish.

If you could reach out to your LoCo team for help with these initiative,
that would be fantastic. As soon as translations get up to =70%
completion, we put them up on

http://developer.ubuntu.com/packaging/

where they are updated daily and are available as HTML, single-page
HTML, PDF and EPUB.

Thanks a lot. Any help is much appreciated.

Have a great day,
 Daniel

[Ubuntu-BR] OFF - Document Freedom Day, dia 27/03 às 13h na UNICAMP

2013-03-20 Thread Zandre Bran
Ôlas Comunidade. Repassando...

-- Forwarded message --
From: Raniere Silva rani...@riseup.net
Date: 2013/3/20
Subject: Document Freedom Day, dia 27/03 às 13h na UNICAMP
To: udslcampi...@googlegroups.com, nslcampi...@googlegroups.com

No
caso de Campinas, quem está organizando é o grupo LibrePlanet São Paulo
(http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_S%C3%A3o_Paulo),

Conforme mencionado acima, o evento será realizado no dia 27 de Março de
2013, quarta-feira, das 13h às 17h, no Auditório do CCUEC
(http://www.ccuec.unicamp.br/ccuec/).

É muito importante salientar que é necessário inscrever-se para poder
ter acesso ao CCUEC. Você pode fazer isso acessando esta página:
https://socrates.unicamp.br/seven/subscribe.php?e_type=lecture.
Mas não se preocupe: *o evento será gratuito*.

-- Grade de Palestras --

- O que é Software Livre? (Sergio Durigan Junior sergi...@riseup.net)
- Padrões livres ou o fim do mundo (Rubens Queiroz de Almeida
  quei...@ccuec.unicamp.br)
- HTML5: Todos as faces do novo padrão (Ricardo Panaggio
  panag...@riseup.net)
- EPUB3: O livro no século XXI (Raniere Silva rani...@riseup.net)

-- Mais informações --

Se quiser saber um pouco mais sobre o evento e sobre as palestras,
acesse a página do LibrePlanet São Paulo
(http://libreplanet.org/wiki/LP-BR-SP/Eventos/DFD_Campinas_2013).

Nos vemos lá!

Saudações livres,

LibrePlanet São Paulo.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] CPR on the website

2013-03-20 Thread Jan Bongaerts
Hey Martijn,
I think it would be lovely if you have some time to introduce the members
of Wouter's team to Drupal. I'm sure they would be interested.
However, overall it should be Wouter's baby.
Up to you to convince him staying with Drupal is better than starting from
scratch in html5.

As for your argument that the Belgian LoCo should preferably stick to
Belgian products, I only follow that thought half-heartedly. Such argument
is based on pride, and pride is often more counterproductive and costly
than what is achieved by it. A bit of pride is commendable, but it should
not interfere with the end result.

So, to sum up, Martijn, thanks for getting involved, and please do work
with Wouter direct about incorporating Drupal into our site. If you feel
that strongly about Drupal, I'm sure you won't struggle to convince Wouter
and his team to embrace it too.

But please don't let pride interfere with the end result: a proper web site
that looks and feels good for the average user, that can easily be
maintained by any successors in our community.

Regards,
Jan.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] CPR on the website

2013-03-20 Thread martijn cielen
I don't agree on the pride part. People who know me, know I'll never
use the word Belgian with pride. I'm Flemish and love the Walloon,
but I strongly oppose to the monster Belgium. Well, so far with
politics, and let's not start a (civil) war ;-) That being made clear,
I don't think anything is wrong with a bit of chauvinism. If not even
Belgian loco uses Drupal, why should people in other countries use it?
(just asking)

I agree that doing something is better than doing nothing, and in
saying so, I applaude Wouter for sticking out his neck. On the other
hand, I know Wouter has a strong feeling Drupal is bad (I read his
tweets), and I strongly disagree.

Time is a problem for all of us, so I guess starting something from
scratch will take longer than updating (and maybe even upgrading) an
existing Drupal site, even though because of an already heavily
overloaded professional life (who ever said freelancers gain big
money?), I'll have too little time left to pick up unpaid work (hey,
even my slices of bread and water don't come fro free). I am hower
prepared to assist where possible.

To avoid further noise on the ML, however, I propose Wouter contacts
me to arrange for a 1/2-day introductory course in Drupal. If he still
only feels like vomiting whenever he hears Drupal after that, I'll
keep my mouth shut ;-)

 Hey Martijn,
I think it would be lovely if you have some time to introduce the members of
Wouter's team to Drupal.

Such argument
is based on pride, and pride is often more counterproductive and costly than
what is achieved by it. A bit of pride is commendable, but it should not
 interfere with the end result.

So, to sum up, Martijn, thanks for getting involved, and please do work with
Wouter direct about incorporating Drupal into our site. If you feel that
strongly about Drupal, I'm sure you won't struggle to convince Wouter and
his team to embrace it too.

But please don't let pride interfere with the end result: a proper web site
that looks and feels good for the average user, that can easily be
maintained by any successors in our community.

 Regards,
 Jan.

Contrary to what Wouter wants us all to believe [ ;-) ], Drupal really

 professional.
I bet anyone in this mailing list can get the basics set up using
Drupal in 1 day. The speciallekes will obviously take a little longer,
but for anyone with decent php knowledge, this will be equally
hard/easy to do in Drupal as in raw php as in any other framework.

Maybe I should organise an introductory course to Drupal...

 M

Wow... that's great! We found ourselves a volunteer! :)

We've been asking for volunteers to maintain the website half a dozen of
times on the mailinglist in the last few years (though admittedly, I guess
we dindn't repeat that question the last half year). Nobody stood up and
 offered his/her help on it.

If you want to work on the system in Drupal... by all means. I think we
would all be happy if you did.
If you want to teach Wouter how to do it... then Wouter has to agree this
 is okay for him.

It's way to easy to say what the ideal path is... and we all agree it
would be best to have a Drupal-guru working on the website. But we didn't
find him up to present. Now don't go shooting Wouter for sticking out his
neck and actually doing *something* (which is better than doing nothing the
 perfect way)

 Grtz,
 Jurgen.

[Bug 1037055] Re: winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2013-03-20 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

- winbindd will renew kerberos tickets until they expire, but it seems
- unable to refresh them before expiry.
+ [Impact]
+ * If it happens on the client, the client can't authenticate to any
kerberised servers (Windows or Linux).
+ * If it happens on the server, all clients (Windows or Linux) are unable to
connect to that server any more.
+ * The main impact is very flaky network authentication on an LTS release that
we will have to live with for a few more years.
+
+ [Workaround]
+ On the desktop run kinit to create a new ticket cache, or on a server restart
the winbind daemon after logging in with a local account. This usually needs to
be done once or twice a week on my desktop, but less frequently on servers.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Requires an AD domain with winbind configured to use it.
+ Use winbind refresh ticket = true
+ Set cached_login for pam_winbind
+ ???
+
+ [Original Description]
+
+
+ winbindd will renew kerberos tickets until they expire, but it seems unable
to refresh them before expiry.

I have the following in smb.conf:

  winbind refresh ticket = true

and have cached_login set for pam_winbind

After 7 days ( the renewal limit on AD kerberos tickets) the ticket
expires and I lose access to my NFS home directory which uses sec=krb5

I have tried to debug why this is happening and have come to the
conclusion that there are two important variables for ticket refreshing
  to work (both in winbind/winbindd_cred_cache.c):

  ccache_list
  memory_creds_list

and that the function that stores the password for later refreshing use
  is called

  winbindd_add_memory_creds

This function though requires that the user is in ccache_list before it
stores the password in a way it can be used by the rekinit part of the
  function krb5_ticket_refresh_handler.

The problem as I see it is that winbind forks and the parent populates
ccache_list and the child populates memory_creds_list.
This leads to the password not being stored in a way that can be used by the
rekinit code in krb5_ticket_refresh_handler.

As a dirty hack (attached) I tried populating memory_creds_list from the
same location as ccache_list get populated (winbindd_raw_kerberos_login
  in winbind/winbindd_pam.c).

  This hack fixes the problem.

[Bug 1157589] [NEW] kvm hangs for freebsd guests since raring upgrade

2013-03-20 Thread Vincent Ladeuil

2013-03-20 Thread Robie Basak
@styro

I've prepared updates for both precise and quantal. Now awaiting a
sponsor.

In the meantime, please could you fix up the test case? It needs to
contain steps to reproduce the problem such that others are able to
perform the same steps that you are.

Someone will need to further verify both fixes once they have been
accepted into -proposed in order for them to get to -updates.

When issuing a 'service nova-volume start' afterwards, nova-volume is up

volumes don't get access to their volumes. Terminating instances then
leads to zombie instances and attached volumes that can't be detached
anymore. Sorting out things manually in the nova database enabled me to
start all instances again and properly attach all volumes. But nothing i
want to do on every reboot of that node. Any suggestions? With
pohysically attached disks thinsg work fine of course.

When issuing a 'service nova-volume start' afterwards, nova-volume is up
and running well. So the service is started too early as it seems. The
crash brings me into serious trouble, as then instances with attached
volumes don't get access to their volumes.

[Bug 1143539] Re: snmp mib IANA-IPPM-METRICS-REGISTRY-MIB has spurious quotes

2013-03-20 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Confirmed. This affects the snmp-mibs-downloader source package, not
net-snmp, in version 1.1 (Oneiric through Raring). I can see this error
in the packaging source in mibiana/ianaippmmetricsregistry-mib on line
603. Setting to Medium priority as a workaround is available.

Since this we don't currently have an Ubuntu delta for this package,
this bug presumably affects Debian too. Are you able to verify and file
a bug in Debian, please?

In the future, could you please include release and version information
in your bug reports? This would have saved me quite some time in
tracking this down. You can automatically include all relevant
information by filing bugs using the ubuntu-bug CLI tool, supplied by
the apport package which is usually installed already.

I had the same problem when upgrading from Q to R but I also had the
same crash from a running local django 'runserver' instance, so the root
cause for this may not be in python-novaclient.

[Bug 1154142] Re: When a file is requested via the API, the returned JSON does not include a 'resource_uri'

2013-03-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package maas - 1.3+bzr1455+dfsg-0ubuntu1

---
maas (1.3+bzr1455+dfsg-0ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low

  * New upstream bugfix release.
- Fixes and returns the 'resource_url' with the 'canonical' url for
a file that is fetched using the API (LP: #1154142)

  [ Andres Rodriguez ]
  * debian/control:
- Change Conflicts/Replaces for Breaks/Replaces.
- Conflicts on tftpd-hpa and dnsmasq.
- Do not pre-depends, but Depends on ${misc:Depends} for 'maas'.

  [ Steve Langasek ]
  * postinst scripts are never called with 'reconfigure' as the script
argument. Remove references to this (mythical) invocation.
  * always call 'set -e' from maintainer scripts instead of passing 'sh -e'
as the interpreter, so that scripts will behave correctly when run via
'sh -x'.
  * invoke-rc.d is never allowed to not exist - simplify scripts (and make
them better policy-compliant) by invoking unconditionally. (The only
possible exception is in the postrm, where it's *theoretically* possible
for invoke-rc.d to be missing if the user has completely stripped
down their system; that's a fairly unreasonable corner case, but we
might as well be correct if it ever happens.)
  * db_get+db_set is a no-op; don't call db_set to push back a value we just
got from db_get.
  * Omit superfluous calls to 'exit 0' at the end of each script.
  * Remove maas-cluster-controller prerm script, which called debconf for no
reason.
  * Don't invoke debconf in the postrm script either, debhelper already does
this for us.
  * Other miscellaneous maintainer script fixes
  * debian/maas-common.postinst: call adduser and addgroup unconditionally;
the tools are already designed to DTRT, we don't need to check for the
user/group existence before calling them nor should we worry about
calling them only once on first install.
  * debian/maas-common.postrm: delete the maas group, not just the user,
as the comment in the code implies we should do.

[Bug 1157919] [NEW] mount.cifs does not set non-numeric uid

2013-03-20 Thread A1an

Using fstab to mount remote windows share with following options
//storage.server/Share/subdir /mnt/local cifs

[Bug 1157918] [NEW] Network selection tab when starting instance renders incorrectly

When issuing a 'service nova-volume start' afterwards, nova-volume is up

crash brings me into serious trouble, as then instances with attached
volumes don't get access to their volumes.

[Bug 1029430] Re: KVM guests networking issues with no virbr0 and with vhost_net kernel modules loaded

2013-03-20 Thread Lorin Hochstein
I'm running into an issue with similar symptoms on precise, but I don't
have the vhost_net kernel module loaded on my compute nodes, and adding
in the iptables rule doesn't seem to help. I'm at a loss as to how to
try to debug this, since DHCP leases work when I set:

libvirt_use_virtio_for bridges=false

But they fail if I set it to true. I've tested with quantal and raring
guests, and both fail to get an IP via DHCP if the above flag is true,
but they succeed if above flag is false.

[Bug 1037055] Re: winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2013-03-20 Thread styro
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  * If it happens on the client, the client can't authenticate to any
kerberised servers (Windows or Linux).
  * If it happens on the server, all clients (Windows or Linux) are unable to
connect to that server any more.
  * The main impact is very flaky network authentication on an LTS release that
we will have to live with for a few more years.

  [Workaround]
On the desktop run kinit to create a new ticket cache, or on a server restart
the winbind daemon after logging in with a local account. This usually needs to
be done once or twice a week on my desktop, but less frequently on servers.

  [Test Case]
- Requires an AD domain with winbind configured to use it.
+ Requires an AD (or Samba 4?) domain with winbind configured to use it.
Use winbind refresh ticket = true
- Set cached_login for pam_winbind
- ???
+ Set cached_login for pam_winbind.
+ Log onto a domain member using a domain account.
+ Winbind will create a standard Kerberos credential cache containing a TGT
(Ticket Granting Ticket - eg something like krbtgt/REALM@REALM).
+ The klist command will verify the existence of the cache and the TGT in it.
+ At some point before the renewal lifetime is up, the credential cache will
disappear preventing Kerberos apps from working. It is often at about 25-50% of
the renewal lifetime, but not always.
+ The klist command will now report that it can't find the ccache.
+ With the bugfix, the ccache never disappears and Winbind will successfully
renew the TGT.
+

  [Original Description]

-
- winbindd will renew kerberos tickets until they expire, but it seems unable
to refresh them before expiry.
+ winbindd will renew kerberos tickets until they expire, but it seems
+ unable to refresh them before expiry.

[Bug 1157564] [NEW] Newly updated kernel doesn't detect HDD

2013-03-20 Thread kay
Public bug reported:

I apologize for the lack of information.

I used Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with linux-image-3.5.0 kernel. Yesterday I
updated kernel from linux-image-3.5.0-25-generic up to linux-
image-3.5.0-26-generic and after reboot it didn't find root partition.
Then it have displayed an initramfs command line which didn't work with
USB keyboard.

In grub I booted previous kernel (linux-image-3.5.0-25-generic) and it
works well. I have checked grub.cfg for misconfiguration, but parameters
for each kernel were identical.

After that I downgraded kernel to 3.2.0 as it is my remote server and I
don't want to get such problems in future.

P.S. I have created a report file under 3.2.0-39-generic kernel.

P.P.S. Here are my initramfs configurations:
