[Ubuntu-QC] Re : Logiciel pour nettoyer les noyaux

2013-07-08 Thread Kanouk

description est la suivante :

This package will always depend on the latest generic kernel image

Voici comment y
remédier:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo dpkg-reconfigure virtualbox-dkms
sudo modprobe vboxdrv

/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove*

Donc on devrait effectivement maintenant

2013-07-08 Thread Georges Rodier
First, svp, pardon my responding in English but I am sitting on Canada's
west coast wanting to share a script posted at our Ubuntu Vancouver
LoCo's Meetup site. (N.B., I have the script's author's permission to
share it with you.)

I have been running Ubuntu on my now ten year old DELL PC for more than
six years (now at 12.04 LTS) and have used Kim Kulak's purge-kernel
script for the past few years with no problem and with the desired
result of retaining the current kernel and one previous kernel. This
provides a safety net should one later encounter problems with the
current kernel.

Is there someone to whom I could send a copy of Kim's script along with
the his instructions for consideration and translation of the script's
description and instructions for use?

Else I could provide the script's location on the Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo
Meetup site but access there would require at least a temporary
(no-cost) Meetup membership.

Whilst I do read French (and bear a truly French name) I do not want to
put you through the pain of reading any French text I might write.

 Kanouk :)

Noobie question

2013-07-08 Thread Cecil New
Hi, I'm learning how to use autopilot and wanted to interrogate a value.

This involves the calendar app. Here is the output, followed by what I
tried. Where did I go wrong?

  File
/home/cecil/Workspace/ubuntu-calendar-app/tests/autopilot/calendar_app/tests/test_calendar_current_day_of_month.py,
line 30, in test_day_of_month
print intern.today
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'today'

In the emulator dir, I added this to main_window.py:

   def get_intern(self):

return self.app.select_single(intern)

In the tests dir, I created this new test:

... elided ...

class TestDayOfMonth(CalendarTestCase):

def setUp(self):

super(TestDayOfMonth, self).setUp()

self.assertThat(

self.main_window.get_qml_view().visible, Eventually(Equals(True)))

def tearDown(self):

super(TestDayOfMonth, self).tearDown()

def test_day_of_month(self):

intern = self.main_window.get_intern()

print intern.today

What I'm trying to see is in MonthView.qml starting around line 89:

QtObject {

id: intern

property int squareUnit: monthView.width / 8

property int verticalMargin: units.gu(1)

property int weekstartDay: Qt.locale().firstDayOfWeek

property int monthCount: 49 // months for +-2 years

property var today: (new Date()).midnight() // TODO: update at midnight

property var currentDayStart: today

property int monthIndex0: Math.floor(monthCount / 2)

property var monthStart0: today.monthStart()

}

 Currently, the structure is more or less structured by me - I
 reorganized the wiki last year, and put stuff in order :). Both wikis
 actually;
 http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio
 http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio

 (note the header/menu that exists on both wikis, which allows for an
 easy oversight of all Ubuntu Studio resources)

 The User Guide is meant for the web site ultimately, but the help wiki
 is a great place for developing it. The backbone that exists there is
 just a sketch - one which could be redone if someone wants to do that.

 I think this page is terrific for adding anything random that has
 anything to do with Ubuntu Studio, like how to disable pulseaudio
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/HowTos.
 Articles don't need to be well written, or anything. More like a notepad
 for useful tips.

In some cases Totem and some other GNOME applications require afirmatively
setting Gstreamer preferences to use ALSA. I have forgotten exactly how that's
done (did it so long ago) and suspect it has changed since the days of Lucid.

Simply remove pulseaudio. If something should depend on it, then
recompile it without pulseaudio dependency or build an empty dummy
package that fakes to provide pulseaudio, using
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-helpers.en.html .
Pulseaudio never worked for me and without pulseaudio I never got

pulse works fine for me.. i have had issues with pulse, and with alsa only,
depending on what hardware i have... there is no reason to remove pulse,

IMO jackd is what musicians and audio engineers need. I know music isn't
the focus of Ubuntu Studio, I anyway wounder that a distro were studio

Pulseaudio was crap, is crap and I guess it will be crap.

Using ALSA directly is ok, something I'm doing myself, when I don't
produce music, but IMO most important is that apps can be used with

[Important Updates] Start Ubuntu Project

2013-07-08 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

I'm sorry to tell you that I have officially resigned from Lubuntu Team,
starting yesterday - My Wiki Page is updated:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/amjjawad

Since I have started this project, and it is not yet done, and because I
hate to start something and leave it without finishing it, not to mention
how much I was willing to do nothing but this project, I think I will help
with it BUT I may NOT take the lead - I'm not sure yet, everything is very
fuzzy right now.

Also, one of my future plans is to start another project, which is actually
the advance phase of Start Ubuntu. This new project is called Start Linux.
Since the very beginning when I wrote the first draft of Start Ubuntu, I
had a vision/plan to carry on with this project beyond Ubuntu and its
flavors.

Resigning from Lubuntu Team does not mean at all that I will not use
Lubuntu, Ubuntu, nor any other variants for good. I have resigned from my
roles and positions, that is all :)

Just give me few days until I finalize my plans/ideas.

Those who are interested in this project, please do sign up on the Wiki
Page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu

I will keep you updated.

Thank you for everyone who replied my first email I sent earlier. I did not
get the chance to go through all the replies but hopefully, I can do that
soon.

This Project must carry on and see the light. I won't fade away. If you
need my help, I will be around.
Please, don't let this project dies. Please, have faith that we can do it.
I'm sure we can. It is not hard at all. Linux has changed my real life so I
can imagine it could at least change someone's else life too. Let's work
together to achieve our goal.

Microsoft Windows is not a very bad system. It is the Company behind it. If
they do have little bit of appreciation to all those Windows XP Users who
have been using Windows XP for 10 years or more now, they would, at least,
tell them there is another alternative which is called Linux. We all know,
they do care about money, and nothing else.

Anyway, if there is anything you would like to ask, contact me directly if
you like. Reply this email, whatever you like. I will do my best to be
around. Well, since I have no more tough and hard responsibilities with
Lubuntu Team, I guess I will have some time for this :)

Let's do it.

Thank you!
Ali

 Dear members and users of Ubuntu and all its flavors,

 May I introduce myself?
 May name is Ali (AKA Ali Linx and/or amjjawad) and I'm a Team Leader in
 Lubuntu Team - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/amjjawad/

 I'd like to introduce a project that has been started since March, 2013
 but I did not get the time to send it to all of you, plus, it was on the
 early stages. Now, I think this step is important as everyone needs to be
 involved, IMHO :)

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu

 On the above link/Wiki Page, you will find all the details that you need
 to know as of now.

 Regardless of the technical details of this project, myself and my team
 (Lubuntu) think it is better that all the teams need to be involved. This
 project has two major advantage.
 1- Provide a very good alternative for Windows XP Users.
 2- Spread the word of Ubuntu and all its flavor.

 Personally, whenever I want to start a project, I try to play on many
 different lines. So, the big target is to reach Windows XP Users but at the
 very same time, it will be a great way to spread the word even to those who
 are using other versions of Windows like 7 and 8 :)

 It is time to reach to more people. It is the time to spread the word of
 Linux. It is time to show our real strength.
 Yes, we can do it. No doubt about that.

 If you are interested, you can find all the details here:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu

 Also, please, feel free to contact me :)

 By the way, just to keep you up-to-date just in case you missed that. The
 Council of Munich City in Germany is planning to distribute 2000 CDs of
 Lubuntu to the people of Munich.
 The French Government has started to use Ubuntu on their Police Station.

Hello Tim,

Thanks for your reply.

Some users may strongly agree with you. IMHO, the biggest advantage of
Linux is simply, a Free Choice. Not free as free of charge, but free will :)

After all, Linux has so many advantage over Windows.

Thanks!

You welcome and thanks for your reply :)

Yes, share and join :D
The more people who will join, the better.

You can also start in real life to inform your friends and family who use
Windows XP until now. Show them Linux. Explain to them how better Linux
will be for them.

Thank you!

I'm sorry, what do you mean? are you talking about the Wiki Page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu ??

If yes, then please understand that page is for us :) Windows XP Users will
not see it. That page for our community.

We don't need to go deep in details. Let's be as easy and simple as
possible. KISS (Keep It Simple and Short).

We know more about Linux History than them, correct? so, filling that page
with so much information is pointless, IMHO.

Thanks!

[Bug 1198833] [NEW] autopkgtest does not stop until service pygopherd is stopped or killed

2013-07-08 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

pygopherd is installed and started during autopkgtest of squid3 [1] as
part of the test depedencies. But the run never ends until pygopherd is
stopped/killed.

The service should ever be stopped as part of the test cleanup, or
autopkgtest should kill all the remaining children when all the tests
are done.

[Bug 1198251] Re: zookeeper package should include logrotate config for /var/log/zookeeper

2013-07-08 Thread Haw Loeung
James,

Looking at one of our bootstrap nodes, it seems we're using the default
shipped with Precise:

ii  zookeeper   3.3.5+dfsg1-1ubuntu1
High-performance coordination service for distributed applications

/etc/zookeeper/conf/log4j.properties:

#
# Add ROLLINGFILE to rootLogger to get log file output
#Log DEBUG level and above messages to a log file
log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.Threshold=DEBUG
log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.File=${zookeeper.log.dir}/zookeeper.log

# Max log file size of 10MB
log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.MaxFileSize=10MB
# uncomment the next line to limit number of backup files
#log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.MaxBackupIndex=10

log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.ROLLINGFILE.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{ISO8601} - %-5p
[%t:%C{1}@%L] - %m%n

Seems MaxBackupIndex is commented out by default?

Regards,

Haw

[Bug 1134103] Re: [SRU] log flooded with cannot get STP status on nonexistent port messages

2013-07-08 Thread James Page
** Description changed:

- When using Xen and OVS a log flood occurs (approx 10 entries /s) when
- using stubdom based HVM guests with PV drivers. This issue was reported
- to the OVS developers
- (http://openvswitch.org/pipermail/dev/2013-February/025586.html) and a
- fix was merged for the 1.4.6 release. Please consider updating the
- Ubuntu package to incorporate this fix.
+ Impact:
+ Some Xen and OVS users will experience floods of STP errors in syslog; this
generates noise and IO and fills disk space.
+
+ Test Case:
+ Setup Ubuntu 12.04 with Xen and OVS networking options.
+ Create a new guest domain using paravirtualized drivers.
+
+ Regression Potential:
+ Limited; the fix just switches the offending error message to be log
rate-limited within openvswitch itself.

[Bug 1163147] Re: can't resolve lan hosts (regression)

2013-07-08 Thread Thomas Hood
** Description changed:

  First, apologies for the complicated configuration.

  I use the 'uvt' front-end to libvirt-managed kvm guest machines. I also
  have a LAN with a router that does local dynamic DNS configuration with
  the client-provided dhcp hostnames.

  I would like to resolve hostnames on my machine for both VM guests and
  LAN hosts. This configuration worked for 12.04 LTS, 12.10, but does not
  work for Raring. I have followed the directions at

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/TestingEnvironment#Networking_with_libvirt
  :

   Put a line into /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf like so:
-
+
   prepend domain-name-servers 192.168.122.1;
-
+
   Disable the system dnsmasq to prevent it from looping with libvirt's
dnsmasq by modifying
   /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to comment out the following line:
-
+
   #dns=dnsmasq

  My /etc/resolv.conf when the wireless is up:
  $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
  # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
  # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN

- $
-
+ $

  I'm surprised that 192.168.122.1 knows the reverse information for dean.

  I want the query for plain dean to succeed. (As that's how 'ssh'
  works..)

  If I swap the order of the lines in /etc/resolv.conf to put 192.168.1.1 first,
  I get the opposite situation:

  $ host dean
  dean has address 192.168.1.236
  $ uvt start sec-precise-amd64
  Sleeping 5 seconds to give 'sec-precise-amd64' a chance to start
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64 echo hello
  ssh: Could not resolve hostname sec-precise-amd64: No such file or directory
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64. echo hello
  ssh: Could not resolve hostname sec-precise-amd64.: No such file or directory
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64.local echo hello
  hello
-

  I do not want to use the .local form for all my VMs. That is annoying and the
  scripts we have written around uvt assume that the .local is not necessary.

  12.04 LTS and 12.10 had this working well. I would like Raring to work that
  well again.

  Thanks

It appears that you have two nameservers, neither of which has complete
DNS information. You need to configure things such that each nameserver
listed in resolv.conf can resolve all names you want resolved.

On a LAN, for example, there is sometimes a nameserver that resolves
names in a TLD such as .private. Such a nameserver has to be so
configured that it *also* resolves Internet DNS names. Likewise in your
setup.

P.S. Can you please edit your description to say which machine has which
IP address? And provide more details about how you have configured your
nameservers?

[Bug 1172467] [NEW] NetworkManager uses dnsmasq with negative DNS cache enabled

2013-07-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since NetworkManager uses dnsmasq to resolve its DNS names, it sometimes
enables the system to use dnsmasq before the network connection has been
successfully established. This causes dnsmasq to try and fail to resolve
some hostnames, it then caches them to its negative DNS cache.

To prevent this from happening I had to add no-negcache to
/etc/dnsmasq.d/network-manager

Should this be the default? I don't think any endpoint user benefits
from negative DNS cache, not even network admins as the DNS system is
robust enough to handle those.

[Bug 1172467] Re: Dnsmasq caches negative results if it starts before the network is up

2013-07-08 Thread Stéphane Graber
NetworkManager starts dnsmasq with caching completely disabled so that
seems unlikely to be a problem with the NM spawned dnsmasq.

However the fact that adding the setting to /etc/dnsmasq.d/network-
manager fixed it for you, shows that you're not using NetworkManager's
dnsmasq but a system dnsmasq instead.

Can you confirm that you have the dnsmasq package installed and not
only dnsmasq-base?

If so, then that bug is invalid as when you install dnsmasq on your
system, that'll bypass NetworkManager's own instance and so will run
with the default dnsmasq settings (including caching).

I don't fully understand what you say here.

1. If the dnsmasq package is installed alongside network-manager then
the dnsmasq server instance will not bypass NM's instance but will
forward queries to it.

2. But that's not the main issue. This report seems to be that dnsmasq
caches failed lookups as if they were NXDOMAINs. If that's true then it
could be regarded as a bug in dnsmasq.

You are right that this in no way implies a bug in NM.

[Bug 1196388] Re: cobbler-ubuntu-import does not import LTS enablement stack images

In the future, we plan to have simplestreams data to describe kernels available.
this is part of the work for maas this cycle.
https://code.launchpad.net/~smoser/maas/netinst2ss is some code i put together
to scrape archive.ubuntu.com and put it into simplestreams format.

for the moment, the hack above is probably the best we can really do.
You could make it at least reasonable by using distro-info to figure out
that precise would have kernels for precise, quantal, raring, saucy.

[Bug 1172467] Re: Dnsmasq caches negative results if it starts before the network is up

2013-07-08 Thread Stéphane Graber
Well for 2), it clearly looks like a case of negative caching (dnsmasq
has no upstream server, therefore it only uses /etc/hosts only, if the
entry isn't in there, it considers it a NXDOMAIN), upstream also seems
to be aware of that behaviour as they offer the option to turn off
negative caching.

Anyway, I personally don't really care, I just want to confirm that this
isn't related to what we have in a default Ubuntu install.

[Bug 1198963] [NEW] Templates don't launch. Multi-arch problem?

2013-07-08 Thread yitzhakbg
Public bug reported:

Actually, it's not just the templates. Seems the LXC environment isn't setup
correctly and I suspect multi-arch.
Raring 13.04 using kernel 3.8.0-26-generic.
lxc-version 0.9.0 from the daily-builds PPA, but, please note:
I had the same problem under the standard raring edition. I added the daily PPA
in the hope that it would help. It didn't!
I purged ia32-libs and ia32-libs-multiarch to no avail.
Does the installation look right?
ybg@bgxtr:~/Media/Mininetry$ find /usr/lib|grep lxc
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/lxc
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/lxc/__init__.py
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/lxc/__pycache__
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/lxc/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-33.pyc
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/_lxc-0.1.egg-info
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/_lxc.cpython-33m.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/README
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/lxc-init
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblxc.so.0.9.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblxc.so.0

Following are two clean-slate scenarios following a fresh install of lxc and
cgroup-lite, after purge of ia32-libs, but again, it behaved the same prior to
the ia32-libs purge.
First, ubuntu from template:

sudo lxc-create -n ub -t ubuntu -l DEBUG -o ub.log -- -b ybg
[ log file name should have been ./ub.log instead of ub.log. My fault. Don't

Sent a patch upstream that addresses that, until then, your best bet is
to either manually patch lxc-start-ephemeral or use the -k option and
then manually wipe the container from disk.

[Bug 1198963] Re: Templates don't launch. Multi-arch problem?

2013-07-08 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for submitting this bug. (Please do try to open separate bugs
for each issue) The second part of it (sshd) has been fixed upstream
just today (with a patch sent a few days ago). Please open a new bug
for that one, and I'll SRU it to raring as I assume that's where you
want the fix.

The first issue is not a bug. You specifed 'lxc-start [...] -- -b'.
The '--' means execute what is specified after '--' as /sbin/init.
Since you said 'lxc-start [...] -- -b', lxc tried to execute '-b'.  -b
is not a valid executable. I suspect this was a cut and paste error?
The -b made sense in the lxc-create command, to request bind-mounting of
that home directory. (in lxc-create, arguments following '--' are
passed on to the creation template) But you do not need to re-specify
it in lxc-start.

[Bug 1163147] Re: can't resolve lan hosts (regression)

2013-07-08 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks Thomas,

 You need to configure things such that each nameserver listed in resolv.conf
 can resolve
 all names you want resolved.

This requirement feels impossible to meet; the dnsmasq spawned by
libvirt on my laptop knows only the VMs running on my laptop. It is not
possible for this dnsmasq to know the hosts on my LAN -- I have a
standard consumer router on my network to provide DHCP and dynamic DNS
services. I do not want to require my laptop to be on and connected to
my LAN for other hosts to continue using the LAN.

The DNS server on my router does not know about the VMs I host on my
laptop. They are behind the libvirt-default NAT configuration, so they
aren't even routable addresses on the LAN. Sometimes my laptop leans the
LAN, and I still want to resolve my VM names.

I do not know how to configure my router to serve hostnames with a fake
TLD. (I haven't used a fake TLD since about 2002, I didn't know anyone
still did that..) If you really think this is a solution, I can look
into it, but this all worked flawlessly with 12.04 LTS. :(

** Description changed:

  First, apologies for the complicated configuration.

  I use the 'uvt' front-end to libvirt-managed kvm guest machines. I also
  have a LAN with a router that does local dynamic DNS configuration with
  the client-provided dhcp hostnames.

  I would like to resolve hostnames on my machine for both VM guests and
  LAN hosts. This configuration worked for 12.04 LTS, 12.10, but does not
  work for Raring. I have followed the directions at

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/TestingEnvironment#Networking_with_libvirt
  :

   Put a line into /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf like so:

   prepend domain-name-servers 192.168.122.1;

   Disable the system dnsmasq to prevent it from looping with libvirt's
dnsmasq by modifying
   /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to comment out the following line:

   #dns=dnsmasq

  My /etc/resolv.conf when the wireless is up:
  $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
  # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
  # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
  nameserver 192.168.122.1
  nameserver 192.168.1.1

- Here's trying to look up a host on my network:
+ My router / DHCP / Dynamic DNS server is on 192.168.1.1.
+ My laptop (hunt) is currently allocated 192.168.1.14.
+ The VMs on my laptop run in 192.168.122.0/24.
+ An instance of dnsmasq started by libvirt runs on 192.168.122.1 on my laptop.
+ My panda (dean) is currently allocated 192.168.1.236.
+
+ Here's trying to look up dean from my laptop:

  $ host dean
  Host dean not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
  $ host dean 192.168.122.1
  Using domain server:
  Name: 192.168.122.1
  Address: 192.168.122.1#53
  Aliases:

  Host dean not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
  $ host dean 192.168.1.1
  Using domain server:
  Name: 192.168.1.1
  Address: 192.168.1.1#53
  Aliases:

- dean has address 192.168.1.236
- $
  $ host 192.168.1.236
  236.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer dean.
  $ host 192.168.1.236 192.168.122.1
  Using domain server:
  Name: 192.168.122.1
  Address: 192.168.122.1#53
  Aliases:

  236.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer dean.
  $ host 192.168.1.236 192.168.1.1
  Using domain server:
  Name: 192.168.1.1
  Address: 192.168.1.1#53
  Aliases:

  236.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer dean.
  $

  I'm surprised that 192.168.122.1 knows the reverse information for dean.

  I want the query for plain dean to succeed. (As that's how 'ssh'
  works..)

  If I swap the order of the lines in /etc/resolv.conf to put 192.168.1.1 first,
  I get the opposite situation:

  $ host dean
  dean has address 192.168.1.236
  $ uvt start sec-precise-amd64
  Sleeping 5 seconds to give 'sec-precise-amd64' a chance to start
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64 echo hello
  ssh: Could not resolve hostname sec-precise-amd64: No such file or directory
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64. echo hello
  ssh: Could not resolve hostname sec-precise-amd64.: No such file or directory
  $ ssh sec-precise-amd64.local echo hello
  hello

  I do not want to use the .local form for all my VMs. That is annoying and the
  scripts we have written around uvt assume that the .local is not necessary.

  12.04 LTS and 12.10 had this working well. I would like Raring to work that
  well again.

  Thanks

[Bug 1168526] Re: race condition causing lxc to not detect container init process exit

2013-07-08 Thread Serge Hallyn
Ok, for the record I cannot reproduce this no precise - I've tried with
both an 8 core fast precise host, and a 4 core precise kvm guest - but
using the same lxc version from the daily ubuntu-lxc ppa.

So it appears to be a kernel regression between 3.2 and 3.8.

[Bug 1163147] Re: can't resolve lan hosts (regression)

2013-07-08 Thread Thomas Hood
 You need to configure things such that each nameserver listed in resolv.conf
 can resolve all names you want resolved.

 This requirement feels impossible to meet; the dnsmasq spawned by libvirt
 on my laptop knows only the VMs running on my laptop. It is not possible
 for this dnsmasq to know the hosts on my LAN

That instance of dnsmasq, call it DV, provides services to VMs. If the
VMs are going to access the LAN or the Internet then DV needs to forward
DNS queries for which it isn't authoritative to a nameserver on the LAN
or on the Internet.

 I have a standard consumer router on my network to provide DHCP
 and dynamic DNS services. I do not want to require my laptop to be
 on and connected to my LAN for other hosts to continue using the LAN.

Agreed. Your laptop should ultimately send DNS queries to the nameserver
on the router, just as any other machine on the LAN does.

You want to be able to resolve VM names on your laptop as well as LAN
and Internet names. In that case you will have to use DV as your
laptop's nameserver and configure DV to forward DNS queries to the
router and not use the nameserver that the laptop is using (which is DV
itself — that would be a loop).

This should be implemented cleanly using resolvconf. Here is an outline
of how that should be done, blindly assuming a few things such as that
the dnsmasq package is not installed on your machine. I blindly
assume, that is, that libvirt runs an instance of dnsmasq using the
binary in the dnsmasq-base package.

Basically, DV should behave similarly to how the server instance of
dnsmasq (from the dnsmasq package) behaves with respect to resolvconf.

1. DV should register with resolvconf a loopback address at which it
listens.

Configure it to listen at 127.0.0.1 on the laptop and modify its control
script to run

echo nameserver 127.0.0.1 | resolvconf -a lo.dnsmasq

on start and

resolvconf -d lo.dnsmasq

on stop.

2. DV should have a hook script in /etc/resolvconf/update.d/ which
generates a list of forwarders for DV to use. The resolvconf hook
script from the dnsmasq package can be used verbatim for this purpose;
simply put the file in update.d/ and configure DV to use
/var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf as its only forwarders-list file. If you
want details I can help you, or you can follow the good example of the
dnsmasq package.
