[Bug 794923] [NEW] Kubuntu network module doesn't allow writing an IPv6 DNS server

2011-06-09 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Not sure if this issue is related to NetworkManager package. I thin
it's more related to Kubuntu network settings.

I click in network settings icon in the systray, open my WiFi
configuration and try to set a IPv6 (i.e: 2620:0:ccc::2) as DNS
nameserver. The text box doesn't allow it to me as it seems to validate
the input against an IPv4 regular expression. Neither writing an IPv6
referece (this is: [2620:0:ccc::2]) does the work.

So honestly I don't know if it's an artificial limitation in KDE network
module, or maybe it relies on NetworkManager itself which doesn't
support an IPv6 as DNS nameserver.

2011-06-08 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
I do confirm this bug. It has never happened before with any Kubuntu (or
Debian) version. It just occurs after upgrading to 11.04 Natty.

I also reported this bug in #786882.

It's an annoying bug which makes a bit unusable my laptop.

[Bug 786882] [NEW] plasma-widget-networkmanagement

2011-05-23 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After pressing (maybe by error) the hardware WiFi button in my laptop
(so I get rtl8192: wireless radio switch turned off in syslog), I
cannot reconnect my WiFi again. The available WiFi networks are not
showed anymore. This does not occur always however, but many times.

Also, due to some other Xorg related problem, sometimes my X session is
restarted (or it's stopped so I run /etc/init.d/kdm restart and get it
again). In these cases, I can never connect again to my WiFi.
NetworkManager plasma widget seems not to detect the WiFi networks.
Restarting network-manager and/or avahi-daemon doesn't not fix it. I
don't know if a problem related to the plasma wigdet or to network-
manager.

These problems just occur ater upgrading to Kubuntu 11.04. Please help
me providing useful information. Thanks.

[Bug 786889] [NEW] Xorg is restarted sometimes after upgrading to Kubuntu 11.04

2011-05-23 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Since the upgrade to Kubuntu 11.04 the X session is sometimes restarted
(I assume due to some crash somewhere). Or worse, sometimes my laptop
gets fully frozen after the X session has crashed and some errors are
displayed in console (I cannot copy them as the system gets fully
frozen).

It occurs once or twice a day. Never occured it with previous Kubuntu
version (64 bits) in the same laptop.

I appreciate any guidance to provide useful debugging information.

Thanks.

[Bug 786882] Re: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

2011-05-23 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Hi, why is this report supposed to affet xserver-xorg-video-intel? It's
just a problem with the WiFi connection :)

However in my first report I wrongly set the related packaged to xorg
(changed later to plasma-widget-networkmanagement).

[Bug 360241] Re: deluge crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_is_value_type()

2009-10-31 Thread baz
This was a random crash that occurred using deluge.

It has been a persistent problem which has been occurring during the
transfer of a 80gig+ torrent.

It's very random and I'm yet to isolate exactly how it's caused. Perhaps
it maybe a hardware issue with myself, as my old SCSI hard-drive sounds
quite noisy; Yet it reports no errors on the drive itself.

If there's any other info I can provide you with I'm quite willing to
help.

Disabling screen powersave solves nothing, the error occurs. This is:
after closing the laptop cover *for a while* (it's not enough with
closing it during some seconds) the uptime command show a load average
of ~5.00 and there are ~2000K of writing operations to disk. Really
annoying and I must restart the computer.

[Bug 414840] [NEW] console-kit-daemon consumes lot of CPU and disk writting after closing the laptop screen

2009-08-17 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

- Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits.
- AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-52.
- ASUS A6TC laptop.

This issue occurs for long time in my laptop (after installing Kubuntu
with KDE4):

After closing and re-opening my laptop screen (even if it's connected to
the power) console-kit-daemon and hald process consume a lot of CPU.
Also, there is something performing a lot of disk writting operations
(dstat shows ~2000K) and running echo -n 1 /proc/sys/vm/block_dump
shows some writting operations by hald and console-kit-daemon.

If then I open Power management - Capabilities then I see an error
in ConsoleKit Runtime Support with a reason PowerDevil couldn't
contact console-kit-daemon This doesn't occur before closing the
screen (all is correct and the above doesn't occur).

In performance mode the laptop is not suspended to RAM or hibernated
at all, but I had an option Allow PowerDevil to manage the screen
powersave. Now I've disabled it to test what happens.

[Bug 400889] [NEW] Keyboard gets crazy often and behaves as if Ctrl, Alt, AltGr or Caps is pressed

2009-07-17 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to KDE 4.2.96 (KDE 4.3 RC2) in my Kubuntu Jaunty 64
bits, the system is *unusable*: the keyboard behaves, very often, as if
the key Ctrl, Alt, AltGr or Caps is pressed (so if I want to write a
then A is written, or perhaps Ctrl+A action is performed, or
Alt+A). Really annoying. The problem takes some seconds and
magically dissapears.

It's not a problem in my keyboard since it occurs using the laptop
keyboard and also with two USB keyboards I've tryed.

It's not also a Kernel issue (2.6.28-11-generic) since it occurs also if
I start the system with an older kernel (2.6.27-11-generic) running
previously.

It also occurs in no-KDE applications so it's not just a KDE problem.

Basically it occurs *always* (perhaps one time each 15 minutes). It
occurs without the need of pressing those keys before, for example: I'm
composing a mail and want to write hello world. I write hello w and
when I press o it appears as O (or Ctrl+O action is performed if it
exists...).

It didn't occur before the last upgrade (~1 week ago). The following are my
repositories:

[Bug 363672] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits hangups often with nvidia-glx-180

2009-07-09 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
After 6 days using 185.18.14 I've experimented 2-3 crashes. Not sure if
they occur due to nvidia driver however, but I assume yes.

[Bug 395557] [NEW] akonadi_control: Unable to register service

2009-07-04 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits I can't get Akonadi client
working so Kontact applications don't show Akonadi resources. However,
akonadi-server works.

Versions:
- Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits
- KDE: 4.2.95 (KDE 4.2.95 (KDE 4.3 RC1))
- Kontact: 4.3.0 rc1
- akonadi-server 1.1.95-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa1

I can start akonadi-server (akonadictl start) but get an error when
running akonadi_control:

$ akonadi_control

[Bug 384399] Re: Too much kjournald(XXX): WRITE block

2009-06-07 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
My laptop disk is an Hitachi:

*-disk
 description: ATA Disk
 product: Hitachi HTS54121
 vendor: Hitachi
 physical id: 1
 bus info: s...@1:0.0.0
 logical name: /dev/sda
 version: HPBO
 serial: HP0D00BDG0NJBA
 size: 93GiB (100GB)
 capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos
 configuration: ansiversion=5 signature=d53d826f

I've read about some problems with Ubuntu and these disks:
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3806198postcount=16

I've added the following to sysctl.conf:

  vm.dirty_ratio = 40
  vm.dirty_background_ratio = 1
  vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs = 3

The disk is mounted with relatime option. I've also checked noatim options
with same behaviour.

The disk led is blinking all the time, it's really a pain, it consumes a
lot of CPU, the system goes slow and so on.

Ok, I attach /var/log/Xorg.1.log which is the log from some time ago when I

I also attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and my current xorg.conf (created

[Bug 369560] [NEW] [2.6.28-11-generic] enable_mtrr_cleanup does not clean up MTRR's

2009-04-29 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

- Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04
- Acer Aspire One

I report exactly the same as reported here:

http://www.linux-archive.org/debian-kernel/283649-bug-524274-linux-image-2-6-29-1-686-enable_mtrr_cleanup-does-not-clean-up-mtrrs.html

I'm trying to tunne my Acer Aspire One by following the Ubuntu documentation:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne

As very well explained here:
  http://perens.com/blog/2009/01/31/13/
Acer Aspire One configures itself to use all 8 of the available MTRRs:

I've added enable_mtrr_cleaup to GRUB menu.list file. And this is what syslog
says (related to mtrr after restarting):

--

Also, /proc/mtrr remains the same (8 entries). But the fact is that I
don't know how /proc/mtrr should look after enable_mtrr_cleanup kernel
option is enabled.

[Bug 363672] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits hangups often with nvidia-glx-180

2009-04-26 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
I've not tried to access via SSH to my computer when it hangups due to this
probem, but under my experience (I know how a complete crash look like) I would
say that the computer gets completely frozen (i.e, the laptop leds don't react,
the power button doesn't work except if I press it for 4 seconds...).
Anyway I will try to test it, but I'm 99% sure that I couldn't access via SSH.

[Bug 355873] Re: wav alsa mixer not working in nvidia sound card MCP51

2009-04-19 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Sorry, the WAV slider does work. The problem is that Kubuntu Jaunty uses
PulseAudio (so Phonon uses it if I'm correct) and System Settings -
Multimedia section had (default value) the sound card with higher
priority than PulseAudio device. After setting PulseAudio with higest
priority, the Kmix WAV slider works for all the applications.

[Bug 363672] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits crashes with linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

2009-04-19 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

My system:

- AMD Turion(tm) 64 bits X2 Mobile Technology TL-52 (2 cores)
- Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits
- nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)
  - nvidia drivers 180.44-0ubuntu1

Using linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic I have a mostly stable system, no hang-ups.
But since I upgraded to the latest available kernel
linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic, my system hangs-up very very often (i.e., after
20 minutes from swith on my laptop). This is, it gets completely frozen and I
must restart it by pressing the power button for 4 seconds.

I've tryed dissabling GLX effects but it doesn't matter.
Unfortunatelly I have no idea of which the cause could be. Any suggestion on
how to inspect it is really welcome.

[Bug 355873] [NEW] wav alsa mixer not working in nvidia sound card MCP51

2009-04-05 Thread Iñaki Baz Castillo
Public bug reported:

In my ASUS laptop I've an nVidia sound card:
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

This worked well in Kubuntu Hardy 32 bits. When moving the wav slider
in alsamixer or kmix the WAV volume was modified according to the new
value.

Now I've installed Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits and the wav slider doesn't
work anymore. Changing it value doesn't affect at all to the volumen.
Also, the Master audio section has no slider, but just a mute
checkbox.

In both SO's (Kubuntu Hardy 32 bits and Jaunty 64 bits) the Line
slider works wrongly: changing it value produces an unexpected change in
the global volume, but this change doesn't correspond to the slider
value. This is, setting the Line slider more than 50% produces the
global audio to dissapear.

Ive heard the complete opposite, I've heard Orange isn't very
good has a lot of drop outs, if you can do so choose Virgin

provide a very good connection. In my opnion the best one out
there! You will have no problems with Linux detecting it
 either.

I have to agree: As an Orange user I can confirm that it has far to many
drop outs. I loose my broadband a couple of times per week for an hour
or so each time.

A number of times I have rang customer services about this, but gave up
when the person in the call centre, located somewhere in Indian I would
guess by their accent, kept trying to 'debug' my livebox despite me
saying the problem was with their service.

I've stopped using my Orange email address, and as soon as my contract

[ubuntu-uk] upgrade to Fiesty

2007-04-17 Thread baz
I want to upgrade to Fiesty, I don't want to do a clean install because
I've installed a fair bit of stuff and I don't want to go through that
again.

So, what's the best way to upgrade? I'm running Edgy at the mo.

Baz

 Hi Baz,

Here is the method I used, around a month ago. I'm sure the upgrade
will be fine for you, but the usual disclaimers apply. There's always
that remote possibility that your box doesn't boot back up after
 upgrading.

 - From Gnome, press Alt+F2
 - Type the following into the run box:
   gksudo 'update-manager -c -d'
 - Click Upgrade in the top right corner of the Update Manager.
 - Wait a minute or so for it to do some magic.
 - Click Upgrade.

 Hope this helps.

 Kris

Thanks that seemed to go ok, only lost Nvu, which I've now installed
from their site.

I believe the existing configuration was mplayer (plugin) with FF but
from my present experiences I am only getting any success at all after
removing mplayer, (re) installing realplayer and for good measure
(re)installing firefox. The video clips then play ok in realpayer as a
separate player, and not integral in FF.

Is something happening with bbc or the apps, (or not) that I have missed?

I am still not able to play bbc video clips, using either firefox or
 konquerer
 (kubuntu 6.06, also 6.10).

Is anyone finding they can play stuff from bbc please? It might give
 me some clues?
I get sound, but no picture, either with realplayer or mplayer
apparently. If it worked ok in the past - great, buut when it does
not work there is a lot to sort through and I am struggling.

(it is getting desperate here - not that I watch bbc video much 0 but
I needed to this evening. After efforts and lack of success anywhere,
in desperation I turned on a windows machine and used it. I have not
done that in a couple of years. Pretty sad)

I use the 'launch in a external viewer' option, I've got this set to run
mplayer, and it works fine for me. I don't know if you need them, but
I've got the W32 codecs installed too.

This isn't completely true. Beryl runs very well on my laptop + intel
915 onboard graphics card. No noticeable slow down whatsoever, unless
I use the blur plugin (which really isn't worth using IMHO).

Ditto that. Same sort of setup here, I915 chip, and it works fine.

[ubuntu-uk] truetype fonts on Edgy

2007-03-28 Thread baz
I'm trying to install M S true type fonts on Edgy but when I type,
 sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

I get,
Package msttcorefonts is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package msttcorefonts has no installation candidate

Where am I going wrong here?

You don't have the multiverse repository enabled?

System -- Administration -- Software Preferences.

 Enable multiverse, try again.

 Cheers,
 Al.
