[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2013-06-17 Thread Dave Vree
If they Unity designers said The launcher is only for launching -- I
might disagree, but I'd understand. It would be viewed like the list of
apps in Android or iOS.

But when you say the launcher is for launching and spreading
applications -- and then it supports quicklists..then the message is
The launcher is for launching and controlling application windows.

So then allow us to minimize a window from the launcher when there is
only one application window open. Especially since spread does not
do anything when there is one window openat which point clicking the
button does nothing...which is counter-intuitive.

Here's me training my wife on this about 4 months ago:

me: Here is a button. It's always right there.
my wife:Great!

me: It is always enabled.
my wife: Thats easy.

me: When you click on it, something useful happens
my wife: I get it!

me: Unless the application associated with the button is currently running and
has one and only one window open on the current workspace -- in which case
clicking on the enabled button will do nothing and provide you with no feedback
whatsoever so that you think your computer might by locked up or your mouse
button broke...but its not...everything is just fine...just don't do that.
my wife: you computer guys suck...

[Bug 1124328] Re: *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:7]

2013-04-05 Thread Dave Vree
There is a workaround for this issue which is to leave one of the
monitors unplugged until after login. It's lame, but it will allow one
to boot and then work within a multi-monitor setup. I get this error
with Intel Video 4000 when driving two monitors via HDMI and VGA
simultaneously.

[Bug 1103593] [NEW] Unity always shows all devices in launcher when CD is inserted

2013-01-23 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.10 the default behavior when inserting a CD (or a USB
memory stick, etc.) is to add a list of mounted devices to the launcher.
This takes up a lot of extra space for me as I usually have several
Samba mounts. Furthermore, I don't need or want to see my CD in the
launcher.

I can click right on the mounted devices and select Unlock from
launcher, but the next time I insert a CD they're back. Disabling this
feature should be an option in 12.10. I believe it was an option in
12.04 via CCSM. Thanks.

Running an Asus K55a here with the same Elan clickpad. For me, right

Identifier ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad

[Bug 1026414] [NEW] Rhythmbox consistently fails on new installs trying to scan large home directory

2012-07-18 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

I have a home directly with a lot of files (about 100GB...maybe 500,000
files) -- mostly for software development purposes.

Everytime I do a fresh install of 12.04 (x64) I have a problem with
Rhythmbox whereby when I first run it, it hangs for about 5 seconds
every 3 seconds. Then after about 1 minute it totally freezes.
Rhythmbox reports about 3000 import errors regarding misc files in my
home directory (that aren't even song files). I am unable to import any
songs from my library (about 5,000 songs).

My workaround is to use dconf-editor to remove my home directory from
rythmdb/locations (leaving ubuntuOne alone). I also have to delete the
~/.local/share/applications/rhythmbox directory as well.

After that it starts normally and I can import my library and it works
great from then on. I feel that this is a pretty serious issue that
Ubuntu's default music player hangs and freezes on a brand new
installation...before a user even gets a change to change any settings!

[Bug 994607] [NEW] Cannot set status in Unity messaging menu with Empathy chat account

2012-05-04 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

As a user of skype and pidgin I would like those applications to be able
to read my status from the Unity messaging indicator (not sure if that
is the right term). Through skype-wrapper and other tools I can do
this. However, unless the following conditions are met, I am unable to
select a status in the menu -- it always selects Offline.

1) Empathy must be installed (I don't use it, so this was a drag)
2) Empathy must have at least one non-IRC telepathy account enabled (this is
also a bummer, but I didn't have one previously)

I think that users should be able to select their status at any time
regardless of what Unity thinks is installed or configured as their
could be many more application that can drive and be driven from that
status.

[Bug 990002] Re: Slow Dash animation

2012-05-03 Thread Dave Vree
I have three machines running 12.04 and Dash is extraordinarily slow on
2 of the 3. One of the slow machines is a Dell XPS mlaptop with an
nVidia GeForce 7400 Go. The video card is reasonably fast when running
all manner of compiz animations, but as soon as I open Dash, my machine
starts grinding. It's so bad that the mouse slowly stutters across the
screen when trying to click on a dash icon. Filtering items takes 1-2
seconds every click. As soon as Dash closes, everything is fast again.
The other machine doing this is an Asus EEE PC-1000.

The machine of mine where Dash is super speedy and works great has a
slower processor than the Dell laptop, but has Intel graphics.

[Bug 993366] [NEW] Unity greeter login screen has a garbled white dot grid

2012-05-02 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

Running 12.04 on three machines. On one of the machines I am running an
Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller as a display
adapter with 64bit version of Ubuntu. On this particular machine the
grid of white dots overlaid on top of the wallpaper for the currently
selected user is messed up big time, however, the wallpaper itself looks
fine.

Once I move the mouse, the dot grid magically fixes itself. Then if I

[Bug 968268] Re: Cannot permanently add wallpaper to 'Pictures Folder'

2012-04-25 Thread Dave Vree
Running 12.04 with the new Unity Greeter that shows your wallpaper on
the login screen.

Something else to think about with all this is that if the Pictures
Folder really means ~/Pictures then when you have an encrypted home
directory, these pictures will not appear at the login screen.
Likewise if adding a picture means adding a pointer to it under the
.cache directory it will also not appear on the login screen.

Ideally, there should be a way, even if it requires sudo priviledges to
add wallpapers to /usr/share/backgrounds. If you this is a separate
issue, let me know and I'll open a new issue.

[Bug 987476] [NEW] Appearance settings pictures folder doesn't retain added wallpapers

2012-04-23 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

Running 12.04 RC on 32 bit system with Unity 3D. From within
Appearance Settings, I go to the dropdown combobox and select
Pictures Folder. I then click on the + button to add wallpapers I
have stored elsewhere on my hard drive. They show up, I can select them
and everything works fine.

If I close the dialog and go back into it, then they are not there...the
Pictures Folder list is empty. This may have to do with the fact that
I long ago deleted the folder Pictures in my home directory. In any
event, the current behavior is confusing at best.

[Bug 971558] [NEW] Rhythmbox unable to play while importing music

2012-04-02 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

I have a 4,500 song music library served from an Ubuntu Samba server.
It takes about 5-10 minutes during the intial import. During this time,
Rhythmbox cannot play anything.

It presents itself like it is ready to play some of the songs once
imported, but what you hear is 2-3 seconds of audio, followed by 2-5
seconds of crackly, popping audio, followed by silence. The timebar
continues to progress on the currently playing song, but there is no
sound.

I was able to replicate this on my system 3 times.

The net result is that I thought I had audio problems with my system. I
am sure that this would really throw off a new user of Ubuntu.

Running 12.04 32bit beta 2.

[Bug 969372] [NEW] Empty Trash confirmation dialog appears behind maximized windows

2012-03-30 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

When I click right on the trash can at the bottom of the launcher bar
and select Empty Trash a confirmation dialog appears that asks Empty
all items from Trash?.

However, if I have an application window maximized I do not see this
confirmation dialog. I also do not see anything in the launcher to
indicate that a confirmation dialog has been opened. The only way to see
the confirmation dialog is to minimize all windows one at a time.

The net result is that it looks like nothing happens after selecting
Empty Trash. So one does it again and again. Then these confirmation
dialogs stack up and can stay there for the entire working session.
Then later, after deleting some files that I wanted to keep in the
trash, I found these confirmation dialogs and dismissed them...and then
the trash was emptied including the files I did want to go away.

This is consistently reproduceable with Unity-2D. I do not think it is a
problem in Unity-3D.

[Bug 969396] [NEW] Maximized windows have no window management menu

2012-03-30 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

When a window is not maximized I can click right on the title bar and
move the window to a new workspace via the pop-up window management
menu.

However, when the window is maximized, I cannot get to the window
management menu so I cannot move the window to a new workspace via the
mouse. The only workaround is to use the ctrl-alt-shift-arrow keyboard
shortcut. This is clumsy and not widely known.

For consistencies sake and to help new user, the right-click pop-up menu
should appear when click on the top unity bar for maximized windows.

[Bug 946016] [NEW] My Unity launcher settings fail with Unity 2D

2012-03-03 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

Running precise beta 1 on a 32 bit system with Unity 2d. Most of the
MyUnity settings work with Unity 2D, but none of the settings on the
launcher tab have any effect at all. This is very confusing and is a
problem for those of us with high-end graphics cards that can't run
Unity 3D due to driver problems.

[Bug 946013] [NEW] Setting launcher to auto-hide in Unity 2d fails

2012-03-03 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

Running precise beta 1 on 32bit with Unity 2d. Enter system
settings-personal-appearance-behavior-auto-hide-the-launcher and set
it to on. At this point, all maximized windows take up the entire
screen, but the launcher never hides, thus the left edge of all windows
are covered by the launcher.

If you set auto-hide to off then windows are resized and everything is
fine. I've tried numerous things, but I've never once seen the launcher
in unity 2d ever actually hide.

[Bug 946019] [NEW] Please provide option for dash to open with whatever lens was used last

2012-03-03 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

I strongly prefer to select applications to run using the mouse instead
of the keyboard. This can be done in Dash, but it requires quite a few
clicks.

Click 1 - Open Dash (top left of screen)
Click 2 - Select the application lens (botton middle of the screen)
Click 3 - Open the filter results panel
Click 4 - Select my categories I am interested in working with
Click 5 - Open the see more panel under installed
Click 6 - Click on the application I am interested in

The next time I want to run another app in the same category, I have to
go through the same 6 clicks. Can you please make it so that Dash opens
in the same state it was in when it was last closed? This seems to me
to be a natural thing to want to have.

Running Precisde Beta 1 on 32bit with Unity 2D.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2012-02-28 Thread Dave Vree
Sorry to report that 295.20 is exhibiting intermittent freezing on
Ubuntu 11.10 and Xubuntu 11.10. I am running 32 bit with an nVidia GE
Force Go 7400. This is really disappointing as 12.04 is soon to arrive
and we have no working driver to run Unity 3D with. I was using the
version from ubuntu-x-swat PPA.

By the way, I have found that when experimenting with x-swat or xorg-
edgers stuff the ppa-purge command is your friend -- resets everything
back to normal with one command.

Hundreds of smart, launchpad account holding Ubuntu supporters are
asking for this behavior to be changed.

CHANGE IT.

Canonical will be no exception.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2012-02-13 Thread Dave Vree
Good News! The new nVidia beta driver 295.17 works! I tried it under
oneric x86 32 bit with a GE Force 7400 Go card that has been blacklisted
for Unity 3D and compiz for some time.

I installed the beta version via the xorg-edgers ppa here:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=oneiric

This is the first driver from nVidia that has worked with 3D in oneric
for me.

[Bug 900794] [NEW] Software Center should display my review when viewing installed apps

2011-12-06 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

New feature request on Ubuntu 11.10 software center.

When displaying install applications in the software center, the user is
presented with a long list of apps by category, but it would be very
nice to also see my own reviews of those apps. This would:

1) Allow me to see which apps I've provided reviews for and which ones I haven't
2) Remind me of what I last thought about an app so I could amend my review
based on a new version of the app

Take a cue from the Andriod market...it does this very nicely.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-11-24 Thread Dave Vree
Using the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates ppa I was able to try out the 290.10
driver. Fedora users have reported success with this driver:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2504236

However, I cannot even start X with this driver. Arch users have also
reported this problem with 290.10. Looking at the Xorg.0.log file I
see:

[15.583] (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce Go 7400 at
PCI:1:0:0
[15.583] (--) NVIDIA(0): none
[15.583] (EE) NVIDIA(0): No display devices found for this X screen.

[16.020] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[16.020]
Fatal server error:
[16.020] no screens found

Which means that with this driver, the adapter cannot detect me internal laptop
display. Its been reported already here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=168305

Hope this information helps us get closer to solution. As most people
here already know, this bug not only keeps Unity 3D from being used but
also the new Gnome3 shell as well. Until this gets fixed our only
Desktop solution is Unity 2D.

[Bug 890396] [NEW] Vinagre only gives 800x600 RDC resolution

2011-11-14 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

The default remote desktop application in Ubuntu 11.10 does not provide
an option to set the resolution of the remote desktop. It defaults to
800x600 and cannot be changed, thus rendering the application unusable.
A workaround is to use the remmina application instead.

[Bug 681348] Re: Add show me the desktop keyboard or Unity dock shortcut

2011-11-09 Thread Dave Vree
This bug is not fixed.

The Alt-Tab mechanism to show desktop only works in Unity 3D. It is not
present in Unity 2D.

The correct solution is a show desktop button in the launcher. Make it
an option if you wish.

[Bug 888088] [NEW] Dash shows no progress indicator during search

2011-11-09 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

On numerous occasions I have search for an application in Dash and
exited when no results appeared...only to later see the application in
Dash. Over time I figured out the Dash searches can be slow, especially
the initial ones. This is very confusing given that search capabilities
in applications and in web browser apps always show either a progress or
a busy indicator of some kind.

Without a progress or busy indicator in dash, one has to sit and look at
an empty result for 30+ seconds before assuming that nothing was found.
This defeats the entire purpose of dash.

[Bug 878536] Re: Launcher option Hide launcher in Compiz CSM doesn't work with setting Never

2011-11-05 Thread Dave Vree
am embarrassed to say the problem for me was that I was running unity
2d. I assumed it would run 3d because I always ran compiz in the past.
Also, it was difficult to find out which I was running as they look very
similar. It turns out my nVidia card was blacklisted because of Unity
freezing issues with the latest nvidia driver.
