[Bug 2065175] Re: In music-folder sometimes by clicking properties of a file, nautilus freezes

2024-05-16 Thread David Beswick
I'm also having this issue. I've seen it happen with flac files and mp3
files. The problem happens every time but only with certain files.

[Bug 1056978] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2018-07-19 Thread David Beswick
I understand that the compositor can't be used to provide a solution, so
then in my opinion the border size for Xubuntu's default theme should be
increased. Even the "Default" xfce theme (which seems to have 2 or 3
pixel borders) is so much of an improvement. As it stands, use of a
single-pixel border basically forces the use of Alt-Right Click resizing
or menu options and these methods aren't obvious to new users. Rather
than making this basic function more difficult by default, I think that
those who prefer the aesthetic of a single-pixel border should instead
be required to make a change of theme to suit their preference.

[Bug 1737279] [NEW] Greeter fails to start after upgrade, session is 'gdm-shell'

2017-12-08 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

$ apt-cache policy gdm3
gdm3:
  Installed: 3.26.1-3ubuntu3

I've had this problem on two different machines on which I ran upgrades
to Artful.

The greeter never appears after the system boots. It's possible to log
in to a different tty, though. When using another tty and running
"systemctl restart gdm3", the screen flashes a few times but then
returns to the tty.

After enabling GDM debugging by modifying "/etc/gdm3/custom.conf" the
journal seems to show that gdm is trying to start a "gdm-shell" session
whose file doesn't exist.

To fix the problem, I tried adding these lines to /etc/gdm3/greeter
.dconf-defaults:

[org/gnome/desktop/session]
session-name='gnome-login'

However, this didn't make a difference.

"apt get install --reinstall gdm3" also didn't solve the issue.

On both affected systems, I finally found there was a file at
"/etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/00-upstream-settings" containing these lines:

[org/gnome/desktop/session]
session-name='gdm-shell'

Changing the configuration here to gnome-login was the only step that
solved the problem of those I tried.

I suspect there was some old configuration left around from one of my
many upgrades. I found that the file "/etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/00-upstream-
settings" doesn't exist after a fresh install of gdm on artful.

[Bug 1731102] [NEW] Poor performance with Wayland

2017-11-08 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

When running Gnome 3 in Wayland mode (confirmed with XDG_SESSION_TYPE
env var) I see the following issues on this hardware:

* Jerky animations (glxgears stutters noticably)
* Mouse cursor sometimes updated at a reduced framerate, usualy when CPU is
under load, appearing to worsen over time (> 8 hours uptime)
* High CPU usage when mousing over icons in left-hand side Unity dock (20-30%),
also causing mouse cursor to stutter
* 15fps in Kodi and poor video playback framerate
* 30-40% CPU usage in Kodi when program idle
* Gnome shell frequently using 25% of CPU or more

All issues disappear when using x11 mode (again confirmed with
XDG_SESSION_TYPE env var). Performance in that case seems as good as
17.04

[Bug 1394582] Re: patch - fix logic flaw, make seahorse-tool's encrypt command work

2015-11-25 Thread David Beswick
Hi, this issue persists in wily. I think it warrants attention since two
people have gone to the effort of diagnosing the issue, creating a patch
and vouching for it. If there's some other way that I can help to get
this resolved, then please do let me know.

At the least, upgrading the version of seahorse-nautilus would help. I
can say that building and installing
git-v1:12dbaa993fa40be1e97f790e390e75f3be1533d2 fixes the issue.

[Bug 1394582] Re: patch - fix logic flaw, make seahorse-tool's encrypt command work

2015-03-26 Thread David Beswick
I don't think that's the case, Tim.

The version of seahorse-nautilus in utopic, 3.8.0, is calling
cryptui_prompt_recipients. This cryptui method consists of the
following call:

return cryptui_prompt_recipients_with_symmetric (keyset, title,
signer, NULL);

So it's cryptui that is itself supplying the NULL value.

Further, the function comment you cite specifies that NULL is a valid
input when symmetric encryption is not desired. The comment around the
patch states Ask for recipients if symmetric encryption was not
requested or if the user didn't give a symmetric passphrase. It seems
both appropriate and the intention of the code (by the comment) to pop
up a key chooser dialog if the caller requests that symmetric encryption
should not be used. However, if the caller ever passes a NULL then no
dialog will be popped up.

It does seem like a logic error to me.

Finally, I will note that the latest version of seahorse-nautilus that I
looked at in bzr does call cryptui_prompt_recipients_with_symmetric,
does supply a non-null value for symmetric, and does seem to work
fine. However, it seems to me that callers to libcryptui's
cryptui_prompt_recipients won't get the results from the function that
they would expect.

[Bug 1245330] [NEW] PyGTK applications don't receive MenuItem events

2013-10-27 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

I noticed that menubar items in the exaile music player application no
longer appeared after upgrading to saucy. However, the menu items
appeared fine in xfce and gnome.

I think the problem may be related to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-gtk-module/+bug/1208019

I've attached a PyGTK program and sample output from it that
demonstrates the problem. Run the test program, mouse over the generated
menu item and click it. Observe that under Unity, the MenuItem receives
a GDK_VISIBILITY_NOTIFY event, but then no further events. Under Gnome,
a wide range of events are received during the test.

[Bug 1245332] [NEW] Menubar items don't appear under Unity in Saucy

2013-10-27 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

When running under Unity in Saucy, no menu bar items appear. File, Edit,
View, etc. all appear, but no menu items appear when they're clicked.
When running exaile under Gnome or xfce, the menu items appear fine.

Debugging confirmed that the 'show' event is never being received for
MenuItems when the program is running under Unity, so
Menu.regenerate_menu is never being called.

2013-09-16 Thread David Beswick
I'm on Ubuntu 13.04 and I just got something similar happening to what
the original submitter reported.

The system took 2 minutes to boot (as opposed to 10 seconds usually) and
the mouse and keyboard didn't respond when the greeter appeared. I
unplugged and replugged the mouse and keyboard, and they still didn't
work. Some time later they started working on their own though.

Let me know if you'd like the dmesg log.

[Bug 1217191] [NEW] Send document as e-mail fails to attach doc when using Thunderbird

2013-08-26 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

1. Ensure Thunderbird is installed and open.
2. Choose File/Send/Document as email...
3. A Thunderbird window with a new email appears. The subject is that of the
document's file name, but no document is attached.

I verified the document was really not attached by sending the email.
The email arrived without any attachments.

This problem can be worked around by accessing
Tools/Options/Internet/E-mail and changing E-mail program to
thunderbird. After making this change, the document is seen attached
in the Thunderbird window.

Previously, the e-mail program was given as sensible-lomua. I have no
such program on my system.

[Bug 1213755] [NEW] Remapping alt-tab using the Keyboard app doesn't work

2013-08-18 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

1. Open the Keyboard settings app.
2. Select the Shortcuts tab.
3. Select Navigation/Switch applications.
4. Remap the action.
5. Observe that the chosen remapped key doesn't switch applications.

I found that I had to use ccsm and change Key to start the Switcher in
the Ubuntu Unity Plugin settings in order to remap alt-tab.

[Bug 1075165] [NEW] Brasero hangs on verifying checksum after burning iso

2012-11-05 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

I burned an iso image and the first verifying checksum run completed.
The disc burned to 100% and then began a second round of verification.
After 20 or so minutes nothing had happened although the dvd drive light
was flashing. The estimated time to complete the task (as seen on the
Unity tray area) was 1 hour and was increasing every second.

I pressed cancel twice and the burn completed. The DVD seemed to have
been written correctly.

[Bug 876522] Re: black screen when dim screen to save power

2012-02-09 Thread David Beswick
This issue seems to be resolved for me, I haven't seen it in a while
whereas it was previously very intrusive. I'm running Unity 2D and
previously experienced it under that environment. I haven't changed
anything specific to this issue besides accepting regularly scheduled
updates. I had continued to experience this in December. I'll comment if
I see it again.

[Bug 892768] [NEW] Slow boot with ata4.00: failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE in log.

2011-11-20 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

Some time around 10.04, my boot times began to always suffer 10-20
second delays. When I can view the log while loading, a message similar
to this one is posted immediately after the delay:

ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
ata4.00: failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE
ata4.00: cmd a1/00:01:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 pio 512 in
ata4.00: status: { DRDY }
ata4: hard resetting link
ata4: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
ata4.00: configured for PIO4

Applying the fix given at this webpage solved the problem for me:
http://paulphilippov.com/articles/how_to_fix_slow_boot_with_ata_errors

It'd great to get this fixed, because my boot times are between 5 and 10
seconds once I apply the above workaround.

[Bug 876522] Re: black screen when dim scrren to save power

2011-11-01 Thread David Beswick
Hi, I'm running 11.10 on the same Macbook model and also have this
problem. When I resume from suspend, the screen is completely dimmed. I
often can't see the login screen. The laptop screen also dims when I
press Fn-F7 to change the multi-monitor mode. In both of these
situations, I can bring the brightness back up with Fn-F2. But every
time I resume or change monitor modes, it has to be done again. I found
the problem resolved for the multi-monitor switch when I chose Turn off
after: Never in the Screen options. However, the problem returned after
another suspend and resume cycle.

[Bug 590465] Re: Jack sensing for mini-TOSLINK optical connector isn't automated on MacBook Pro 4, 1

2011-09-19 Thread David Beswick
Hi, I've just confirmed this bug on a Macbook 2,1. I think a good
compromise would be the optical functionality exposed as a device in
the volume settings, so users could manually switch to optical output if
they chose. This sounds like it would also be useful for various other
non-Macbook machines. Does anyone know what would be involved in doing
this, and if it's possible?

I thought there was something wrong with my Macbook's headphone port
because the light is stuck on, and I've been digging around with a
toothpick in the port all day (this is standard procedure for this
happening in OSX, the TOSLINK sensor in the port often gets bent and
stuck.) It'd be good to address this so people don't think something's
wrong, especially because the analogue headphone port doesn't currently
work after install without unmuting a device in alsamixer.

[Bug 689593] Re: 2x100% CPU and memory usage growth when setting bootable flag in palimpsest

2011-07-04 Thread David Beswick
Hi, I also just suffered this problem in Natty. Memory usage peaked at
over 12gb virtual and the operation lasted for over 10 minutes. The
memory situation resolved after this time with the udisks-daemon process
ending, but palimpsest indicates that it's still waiting for the
bootable flag operation to complete by the spinning circles in the
partition. The partition was mounted at the time. I was trying to invert
the bootable flag state, i.e. for device sdb1 to have 'bootable', and
for device sb2 to not have the flag.

I re-tested this in Natty and it still happened. But going off the
suggestion in that bug, I recompiled wxruby while excluding GLCanvas,
and I found the problem doesn't occur, wxruby works fine. Maybe the
issue is in Mesa as the bug suggests.

[Bug 756237] Re: wxRuby crashes with segmentation fault in pixman_image_composite32

2011-04-12 Thread David Beswick
** Description changed:

+ Edited: I corrected the repro steps, thanks Marvin
+
  This is a strange one, I'm not sure exactly where the fault lies.
  Basically, performing almost any operation in a wxRuby app causes a
  crash in pixman_image_composite32. This crash doesn't occur when running
  regular wxWidgets apps or wxPython apps. The problem occurs on both ruby
  1.8 and 1.9.1. It also occurs across all versions of wxRuby. The bug
  doesn't show up on all linux distos (success has been reported with Arch
  linux) but I think that's determined by the version of pixman that the
  distro is using.

  To repro:

  1. Install ruby 1.9.1: sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1
- 2. Install the wxWidgets gem: sudo gem1.9.1 install wxruby
- 3. Run the wxRuby bigdemo sample: ruby1.9.1
/var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/wxruby-2.0.0-x86_64-linux/samples/bigdemo/bigdemo.rb
+ 2. Install the wxWidgets gem: sudo gem1.9.1 install wxruby-ruby19
+ 3. Run the wxRuby bigdemo sample: ruby1.9.1
/var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/wxruby-ruby19-2.0.0-x86_64-linux/samples/bigdemo/bigdemo.rb
  4. A segmentation fault occurs.
-

  I've got wxRuby working by disabling some code in pixman. In the file
pixman/pixman.c, function lookup_composite_function, I
  ifdef-ed out the following code:

-  for (i = 0; i  N_CACHED_FAST_PATHS; ++i)
-  {
- const pixman_fast_path_t *info = (cache-cache[i].fast_path);
+  for (i = 0; i  N_CACHED_FAST_PATHS; ++i)
+  {
+ const pixman_fast_path_t *info = (cache-cache[i].fast_path);

- /* Note that we check for equality here, not whether
- * the cached fast path matches. This is to prevent
- * us from selecting an overly general fast path
- * when a more specific one would work.
-  */
- if (info-op == op
- info-src_format == src_format
- info-mask_format == mask_format
- info-dest_format == dest_format
- info-src_flags == src_flags
- info-mask_flags == mask_flags
- info-dest_flags == dest_flags
- info-func)
- {
- *out_imp = cache-cache[i].imp;
- *out_func = cache-cache[i].fast_path.func;
+ /* Note that we check for equality here, not whether
+  * the cached fast path matches. This is to prevent
+  * us from selecting an overly general fast path
+  * when a more specific one would work.
+  */
+ if (info-op == op
+ info-src_format == src_format
+ info-mask_format == mask_format
+ info-dest_format == dest_format
+ info-src_flags == src_flags
+ info-mask_flags == mask_flags
+ info-dest_flags == dest_flags
+ info-func)
+ {
+ *out_imp = cache-cache[i].imp;
+ *out_func = cache-cache[i].fast_path.func;

- goto update_cache;
- }
+ goto update_cache;
+ }
  }

  The bug doesn't occur after this modified version of pixman has been
  installed. As far as I can see, the cache-cache[i].fast_path.func
  pointer is pointing to an invalid location. I think the usual target of
  these pointers is the following variable in pixman.c:

  PIXMAN_DEFINE_THREAD_LOCAL (cache_t, fast_path_cache);

  This thread local variable seems to be uninitialized or filled with
  garbage when the crash occurs.
-

[Bug 756237] [NEW] wxRuby crashes with segmentation fault in pixman_image_composite32

2011-04-09 Thread David Beswick
Public bug reported:

I've got wxRuby working by disabling some code in pixman. In the file
