[Bug 1482851] Re: Windows 10 is detected as Windows 8

2015-08-13 Thread David Martin
It is mostly cosmetic as everything seems to work fine, at least for me.
This patch helped me with both Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04.

[Bug 1010045] Re: 12.04 hangs on shutdown deconfiguring network interfaces

2013-06-25 Thread David Martin
I'm now thinking of going back into this issue. Definitely the problem
appeared when installing cups as it requires avahi+mdns packages. This
sounds quite fair if cups is to autodetect printers in the LAN.

I've been reading more about mdns. I remember that previously I removed
it in certain host to avoid delays in SSH connections and now I have
been reading again about it at bug #94940
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nss-mdns/+bug/94940. If the
delay is caused by mdns it may be amplified when having an interface
configured as multiple VLAN sub-interfaces. Cheating nsswitch.conf
sounds easier than completely removing avahi+mdns...

So, I would like to know if the rest of the people have avahi+mdns
installed and what does their host entry in nsswitch.conf look like. I'm
quite confident that keeping hosts: files dns as it is now (with
avahi+mdns uninstalled) may help in my case.

We also have a MS AD with a .local private domain but I doubt this may
interfere as both AD servers switch off every day a couple of minutes
before our Ubuntu host does. ¿Do you have .local AD in your LANs?

David

[Bug 1010045] Re: 12.04 hangs on shutdown deconfiguring network interfaces

2013-06-10 Thread David Martin
:-)) Seems to be fixed. It was an old friend of mine...

I removed much software installed during the last week. But only after
this one I got the shutdown in time. Boot process seems to be faster now
and a lot of OpenSSH start/stop messages are gone:

  sudo apt-get purge avahi-daemon libnss-mdns

It's about Zeroconf and APIPA IP numbering, but I don't think it is
necessary for desktop servers.

So, I'll try to reinstall things and get my system back to production.
On the other hand, I still don't understand why this didn't bother us a
couple of weeks ago...

Regards
David

[Bug 1010045] Re: 12.04 hangs on shutdown deconfiguring network interfaces

2013-06-07 Thread David Martin
We have dns-nameservers 127.0.0.1 set in /etc/network/interfaces under
the eth1 entry. Do you think that moving it to lo might help?

Yesterday I tried to stop the network before shutdown and everything
went fine and fast, and that makes me feel better. In the worst case we
may fix the shutdown scripts (crond) with little danger.

[Bug 1010045] Re: 12.04 hangs on shutdown deconfiguring network interfaces

2013-06-06 Thread David Martin
We have been preparing this machine for about a year. It is supposed to
work as a a firewall and web proxy connected to about 10 vlans, with DNS
server, LAMP, Squid, etc. It's a 64 bit Ubuntu Server perfectly up-to-
date.

One week ago we decided it was finished and we moved it into production
use. To this point everything was OK. During the last week we configured
samba + swat - libpam-smb + cups + hplip and there was a kernel update:
on Monday we noticed the hang at the Deconfiguring network interfaces
but yesterday we saw that it was not a real hang because the system
powered off in about tree-four minutes (it used to be about 20-30
seconds).

I have just removed cups + hplip with no success. My next plan is to
remove the samba set (I was suspicious of the problems between swat and
libpam-smb) and maybe go back to previous kernel as this was the whole
story of the last week.

Here, above, I saw some relation between the length of the delay, the
point where it happens and the number of interfaces, so I'm writing
about it. I may try to add some verbosity, but I have very little
clues...

[Bug 1012277] Re: Closing laptop lid should not blank external monitor

2012-10-29 Thread David Martin
I have the same problem with my Dell D410, docking station, and a
generic 15 external monitor. Initially the external monitor shows an
out of range message but once signed in via the laptop screen, both
screens are mirrored. Closing the laptop lid blanks both screens and I
then can't get any display at all. Thus I then have to switch off with
the power button and start all over again.

Trying to start up with the laptop lid closed and using the dock power
button just shows the out of range message on the external monitor, so I
have to start up with the lid open.

I'm using Precise 12.04, upgraded from 11.10 and all updates installed.

Re: [Bug 615053] Re: tg3 network disconnects during high usage

2011-05-23 Thread David Martin
How do I check the firmware version?

I have this on all my machines, all running different version of Ubuntu
( all are similar hardware).

It only occurs when the card is under 100% utilization for several seconds.
I have recently lowered the chance of this happening by bonding the
multiple interfaces.
Now it only happens rarely.

I also try to limit the bandwidth usage through application setup.

On 05/23/2011 04:22 PM, Jim Sizelove wrote:
We are experiencing a very similar situation. We have a server running

and trying to reset itself. This has happened five times in the past
five weeks, three of those in the past week.

We have a second Xen host server with nearly the same configuration that
has not experienced this network issue. It does have a newer firmware
version for the tg3 (5721-v3.61) than the server experiencing the
problem (5721-v3.55a). It is possible that the Xen guests on the second
server do not have the network traffic loads that trigger the problem on
 the first server.

David, can you compare the firmware versions of your servers? Is it
possible this issue has been fixed in the firmware?

Unfortunately Jeremy, I do not have the time right now to re-setup this
test on a non-LTS release of Ubuntu.

I do know that is still exists with my current version, but I only use
LTS versions of Ubuntu.

So re-imaging a set of machines just to run the test, and re-imaging
back to an LTS version is just too time consuming.

I have confirmed this bug with every Broadcom NetXtreme based server I
have, and is completely repeatable by saturating the network link for
more than a few seconds.

This might not be a tg3 bug, it is possible it is a known firmware bug.
Broadcom does not issue firmware fixes to the public, instead they rely
on vender's to roll them out.

[Bug 615053] Re: tg3 network disconnects during high usage

2010-08-08 Thread David Martin
I forgot to comment on the nicfwupg.log in the attachment.
That is a log from the HP firmware update software. I really suspect that this
is a firmware bug common in most Broadcom products manufactured prior to a year
ago. Although a firmware fix was released and repackaged by Broadcom the
update software does not function (I suspect this is due to a TRUE bug in the
existing tg3 module).

I strongly suspect that somewhere in one or more of your system's
configuration files, that old numeric host name still exists.

Please confirm that the old numeric hostname has been edited into the
new hostname (that starts with a letter) from *all* configuration files
 on your machine under /etc, including /etc/hosts , /etc/mailname ,
 /etc/aliases and /etc/postfix/main.cf

I did a grep 5400 $(find) from the etc directory.

Only the /etc/postfix/main.cf file was wrong (but postfix is no longer
installed), I changed it.

Its asinine to require postfix for a printer, makes no sense.

I suspect the driver does not directly need postfix, just any way to
send email out from this machine; postfix is the default choice for
many packages in Ubuntu to install to meet such a requirement. If you
prefer something smaller you can install ssmtp and set that up, and many
packages will then use it instead of postfix for their outbound email
 needs.

Why a printer driver wants to email something (perhaps registration info
to HP? Perhaps alerts to an admin when the printer is low on toner or
out of paper?) I don't know. Without full source code for the driver, I
 can't really find out, either.

Just so you know, Internet RFC 1178 (which is all about choosing
hostnames) specifically advises Don't use digits at the beginning of
 the name... :)

It might be good for Ubuntu to check for this issue, when the host names
is chosen during installation, and at least warn the unwary
 user/systemadministrator about it.

I don't need postfix, the problem I have is that many packages list it
as a dependancy even though they have no need of it. When it attempts
to install it causes by 64 bit flash to stop working (no clue as to why)
and then issues tons of errors every time I try to use the apt system.

[Bug 184145] Re: Ubuntu Gutsy VLC fails to start

2008-01-19 Thread David Martin
That could be the case Henri, it may not have made its way round all the
servers yet.

I'm in the UK, and got the update last night, and in fact I think there
may have been another Xorg update released this morning.. which I
briefly remember installing.

I'm not sure if doing this is recommended or not, but you could go into
SystemAdminSoftware Sources and change the server where you download
from to the UK one... then check to see if the update is available.

[Bug 181923] Re: [Hardy 8.04 Alpha-3 Live-CD] Update-manager icon reports unable to communicate with backend.

2008-01-15 Thread David Martin
I get this as well, but even when I'm not connected to any network.

Surely it would be better to only show this icon if the computer is
connected to a network and is unable to connect with backend?

[Bug 182498] Update Manager could not calculate the upgrade

2008-01-13 Thread David Martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I have just done a clean install of Hardy Heron Alpha 3 and there are 85
updates available.

When clicking 'Install Updates' from within the Update Manager a menu
pops up:

Not all updates can be installed
Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.

So I select 'Partial Upgrade' and the loading bar comes up Preparing
the upgrade...

Then after a few seconds the following error appears:

Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

I have managed to repeat this problem without getting any further with
installing the updates, any help would be appreciated.

[ubuntu-uk] Linux Comaptible Hardware

2007-11-13 Thread David Martin

 From: Alec Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Linux Comaptible Hardware

I've noticed recently that more hardware manufacturers are saying if
their hardware works with linux lately?
I can think of 3 examples:
1GiB pen maxell drive form asda (?7, bargain!) about a week ago. It said
on the packet, requires windows 98 or later, mac os (insert an
irrational number here) or linux 2.4
My friend got a new d-link USB wireless gadget, also about a week ago.
It said on the box that it worked on linux. And work on linux it did.
My school got a new printer. They left a label on it which boasted all
of it's exciting new features. One was Postscript compatible - runs
on linux and it had a picture of tux on it =] The ict staff still
insisted on plugging it into a windows computer though =[

 Has anyone else noticed this?

 Alec Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I noticed a little Tux on the back on my SanDisk flash drive packet
and Linux under the system requirements bit.

And of course it does work fine under Linux, except the all the U3
junk they come pre-installed with that is.

Cheers.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Niggling wireless issue

2007-10-20 Thread David Martin
What model is your laptop? With my ThinkPad I can turn off various
internal devices including the Wireless adapter. In Windows it's a
checkbox to switch on and off but in Ubuntu I have to send commands to
ACPI files in /proc. I believe there are several laptops that work in
 the same way.

 Hope this helps.

 Tom

On my Thinkpad X31 with Ubuntu just using the Fn+F5 key disables/enables the
wireless adapter. Or, the software option, right click the network manager
on the panel and tick 'Enable Wireless' works for me.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Niggling wireless issue

2007-10-20 Thread David Martin

That's interesting. On my X31 (great laptop) the Fn-F5 combo does
nothing, I have read that it should operate the bluetooth adapter - I
have to switch it manually if it should get turned off by accident. I
don't have the standard wireless card though, this could account for the
 differences.

 Tom

Ah, you must have a slight different model of the X31, as mines doesn't have
bluetooth.

My Thinkpad R50 has both wireless and bluetooth and the Fn+F5 key is
supposed to cycle though all the on/off possibilities for both, but with
Ubuntu it only seems to turn the bluetooth on and off not the wireless
(though I haven't tested this in Gutsy yet.)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Gutsy, first reports!

 STONE COLD wrote:
  Hi,

those of you who have now installed 7.10 what are your thoughts?
How has it improved from fiesty?

Installed it this evening from the Live CD on an oldish Athlon XP 1900
with 256MB memory. Installation was very slow (I expected that, I am
upgrading the memory just haven't got any to hand right now). Once it
installed it boots fine and seems fairly responsive on the desktop.

Couple of niggly problems though. When booting from the Live CD in
either normal mode or choosing the OEM mode it won't display properly on
this particular machine (it's got an ATI Video card, I think it's a
Radeon 9200SE) and it seems to go into 640x400 (it has a big black
border on the bottom of the screen!). Safe mode video option works fine
 though.

Splash screen doesn't work when booting up. I have seen this before, I
think in Feisty, can't remember what I did to fix it.

I'm going to give it a go on my main desktop tomorrow. So far I am
quite impressed, hope the problems I have experienced aren't the norm.

 Rob

Did a fresh install of Gutsy on a Thinkpad X31 from the Live CD,
everything went fine and only took 20mins.

First problem I noticed is the boot and shutdown splash screen don't show --
same as Rob, though they show fine when my external display is connected (tv
at same resolution). Also the computer seems to take a little longer to boot
than Feisty did, nothing to bother about though.

Aside from that everything seems to be running smoothly, hopefully it'll
still be the same once I get all my favourite programs installed. And here's
hoping it works as well on my other Thinkpad.

Oh, and another thing I noticed, desktop effects won't work, they did work
(sort of) in Feisty with a few bugs. Could this be to do with the ATI
drivers? But Anyway, I can live without desktop effects, though they are
nice for showing off :)

I'll be upgrading a few other machines over the weekend and shall let you
all know how I get on.

Cheers.

[ubuntu-uk] Off the fence and ready to join in!

2007-05-15 Thread David Martin

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I'd like to produce a serios of good looking leaflets to be used by
anyone to promote Ubuntu. There was already an offer from a printer on
the list. just need to get designs together. Unfortunately I am awful
with any kind of design stuff.

Would you be willing to help?

Ciaran

Yea I'd certainly be willing to help. I'll have to have a read through the
leaflet thread again and see what's what, and if you guys that are working
on that project could let me know what stage the project is at I'd be happy
to give some input where possible.

Cool, where are you in Scotland?

West Fife, so my closest LUG would be Edinburgh (EdLUG), but I've yet to
venture to a meeting.

Cheers.
