[Bug 1965855] [NEW] p7zip source package needs "Multiarch: foreign" in debian/control

2022-03-21 Thread David Ward
Public bug reported:

The p7zip:i386 and p7zip-full:i386 packages are missing in focal.

The result is that debhelper in focal-backports cannot be used to build
i386 packages. It depends on debugedit:i386, which is missing, because
p7zip-full:i386 is a build dependency.

Please apply this patch to focal. It adds the "Multiarch: foreign" field to
both binary packages in the control file.

[Bug 1965800] [NEW] debhelper in focal-backports not usable for i386 package building (missing dependency)

2022-03-21 Thread David Ward
Public bug reported:

focal-backports contains debhelper 13.5.2ubuntu1~bpo20.04.1. This is an
architecture-independent package, but it depends on debugedit, which is
architecture-dependent.

The debugedit package exists in focal-universe for amd64, but not for
i386. As a result, Launchpad is not able to build PPA packages targeting
focal i386 that require debhelper-compat (= 13).

This would appear to be an oversight. It does not affect bionic,
hirsuite, impish, or jammy; all of these contain the debugedit:i386
package. (It was moved from universe to main at some point after focal.)

[Bug 1632183] Re: saned not find scanner that scanimage -L finds

2022-03-15 Thread David Ward
There shouldn't be a problem here. The purpose of saned is to share
scanners that are physically attached to the local system, so that
remote systems can use them. If the scanner is already accessible over
the network, a remote system can connect to it without using saned.

See also /usr/share/doc/libsane1/README.Debian.gz and
/usr/share/doc/sane-utils/README.Debian regarding permissions for
scanner device files and saned in Debian/Ubuntu.

[Bug 1890464] Re: Can not scan as user

2022-03-12 Thread David Ward
Assuming you are not in the lp or scanner groups, what happens if you
try to use scanimage to scan an image? (See "scanimage --help" for
syntax, and use the device name that appears when you run "scanimage
-L".)

If that doesn't work, can you add the --verbose flag to scanimage, and
attach the output here?

Yes, that is what I meant by physically logged in.

You shouldn't need to be in the scanner group (or the lp group) in that
case.

If you remove yourself from both of those groups, does this stop
working? If so, what is the output of "sudo scanimage -L"?

[Bug 1888928] Re: "getaddrinfo for local hostname failed: No address associated with hostname" for IPv4 to IPv6 converted address

2022-03-11 Thread David Ward
> do_bindings: [0] bind failed: Address already in use

This seems like you have more than one process listening for an incoming
connection to saned.

Please see the last three sections of /usr/share/doc/sane-
utils/README.Debian. These each describe a different method of enabling
the daemon (inetd, systemd, or sysvinit). You should only be using one
method.

Note that with inetd or systemd, the saned process is not started until
there is an actual connection. However it will be listening on TCP port
6566. Please check the output of "ss -p -l -t" to see what process(es)
are listening on this port.

[Bug 1890464] Re: Can not scan as user

2022-03-11 Thread David Ward
Please see the "SETUP" section of
/usr/share/libsane1/doc/README.Debian.gz. You must either be logged into
a physical console on the system (not an SSH/VNC session) - or if you
want to bypass that requirement, you must add the user to the "scanner"
group. This is expected behavior.

(Adding the user to the "lp" group happens to work because your device
is also a printer - but that's technically not the right answer for
scanning.)

If this issue occurs when you are _physically_ logged in, please change
the status back to Confirmed.

[Bug 1901293] Re: EPSON ET-2600 not detected by sane-find-scanner

2022-03-11 Thread David Ward
Please see the "SETUP" section of
/usr/share/libsane1/doc/README.Debian.gz. You must either be logged into

[Bug 1395271] Re: USB 1 and USB 2 scanners fail when connected to USB 3 ports

2022-03-11 Thread David Ward
Multiple issues were reported upstream regarding USB 3.0. In some cases
this was power management related (placing a USB hub in between the
system and the scanner).

Marking incomplete due to age and inactivity. If this is still
reproducible (preferably with version 1.1.1-4 in jammy), then please
reopen.

Please add the --verbose flag to scanimage, and attach the output.

Is this issue only with PDF? If you use --format=jpeg instead, are you
able to open the image?

[Bug 543183]

2020-09-08 Thread David Ward
@J.C. Jones Can you kindly undo your recent change to the status of this
bug?

@David Woodhouse: p11-kit-trust.so only handles CA certificates; it does
not pull in the PKCS#11 security module configuration, which is stored
in the system-wide NSS database. This is required where smart cards are
used (using security modules such as OpenSC, either directly or via the
p11-kit-proxy security module). This was part of the issue reported with
this bug.

As it stands now, the PKCS#11 module configuration still has to be
manually added to every Firefox/Thunderbird profile after the
application is first launched by the user and the NSS databases are
created at that time. Changes to the system-wide NSS database won't
propagate (for example, if the system administrator replaces the CoolKey
module with OpenSC).

[Bug 1846539] Re: [broadwell-rt286, playback] Since Linux 5.2rc2 audio playback no longer works on Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140

2019-12-05 Thread David Ward
There are two upstream commits that make the SOF and SST drivers
mutually exclusive on a specific platform.

The one for Broadwell is now merged into the Ubuntu kernel:
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/eoan/commit/?id=d46917958a6366f3c63501e9962b60dd7d33a3bd

But the matching one for Baytrail is missing. It should be merged as well:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit?id=df7257e544faf838c3e7ad6b4e89ffe59e87f5e1

Ubuntu kernel team:

In the kernel package for Ubuntu, CONFIG_SND_SOC_SOF_INTEL_TOPLEVEL
(introduced in 5.2-rc1) needs to be changed from 'Y' back to its default
value of 'N'. As described by Intel, this option cannot currently be set
together with CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SST_TOPLEVEL.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop ISO of the
development release. It would help us greatly if you could test with it
so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You
can find out more about the development release at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your
help.

[Bug 72584] Re: Installing Mozilla-opensc package not enough to use smart cards

2018-05-27 Thread David Ward
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1647285 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1647285

Firefox and Thunderbird each use a local NSS database, which is part of
the profile in the user's home directory. It is created when the
application is launched by the user for the first time.

For these applications to automatically load the OpenSC PKCS#11 module,
there would need to be a system-wide NSS security module database, in
which the OpenSC PKCS#11 module could be installed. This has been done
in Fedora but not Ubuntu; see bug #1647285.
