This is probably not related to exaile, or if it is then it's old enough
where we don't support it. File a new bug if you produce it on a current
version of python + exaile.

[Bug 407876] [NEW] Window list misbehaves on vertical left side panel

2009-08-01 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This bug is similar in spirit to #43066 and #187540, but I believe its a
separate issue.

I have the panel with the Window List setup with the following settings:
orientation left, 200 pixels, expand on. I have three monitors using
xinerama.

This appears to occur after having more than 8 windows open, since when
I close windows it stops occurring after I have 8 windows left.

The window buttons will resize/regroup so that I cannot hit them. If
they are shown in a single column, then when I click Each time that I
try to click one of the windows in the list it will display the list in
two columns on mouse down, and go back to one column on mouse up. If I
keep the mouse down, it will keep switching the list between one and two
columns. It will randomly end up being one or two columns of list.

This is incredibly annoying, particularly given that I have three
widescreen monitors attached and it doesn't really make sense to put the
panel along the bottom for me.

Ubuntu 9.04

2009-07-10 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Talked with NVIDIA, looks like the problem is that the GLX visuals
aren't compatible for the two cards (or something to that effect), so
you have to disable GLX and the setup works fine after that (though, its
a bit sluggish).

[Bug 397309] [NEW] gdm crashes in libgtk2 with SIGSEGV at _gdk_visual_init (gdkvisual-x11.c:249)

2009-07-09 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

System information: Ubuntu 9.04
Package Version: 2.16.1-0ubuntu2

I have two NVidia cards installed with the 1.73 restricted drivers. My
setup is two screens on a 6600GT, and a single screen on a FX 5200.

I rebuilt gtk from source with no optimizations, and used apport to
obtain a core dump. gdmgreeter does a SIGSEGV at
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.16.1/gdk/x11/gdkvisual-x11.c:249. Examination of
the core dump with GDB shows that default_xvisual is a NULL pointer,
thus why there is a segfault when it tries to dereference the pointer.

default_xvisual is derived from the X11 screen structure for that
screen, which appears to be filled out correctly except that root_visual
is NULL, which is where default_xvisual comes from.

Its not clear to me whether the root_visual screen is allowed to be
NULL, but also its clear that GTK doesn't check for a NULL pointer there
either before using it, which seems to me to be a bug. However, I don't
have any X11 experience so I'm not quite sure what the action should be
if it does not have a default_xvisual (I noticed that it enumerated 72
visuals, so maybe it could just pick one as the system visual?).

The fact that the root_visual isn't filled in seems to me (without any
actual knowledge here) that its a bug in the NVidia driver (which I
realize isn't supported by Ubuntu), but if that is an acceptable to be
NULL then it should be fixed in GTK.

I would just like some direction on how GTK should be fixed (if it
should), and I'll patch it and test. Its quite annoying because I can't
start X until fixing this. :)

[Bug 151231] Re: cron jobs fail silently if too much output produced and no MTA is installed

2008-11-06 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
I've had this problem for a few months now. Some of my cron jobs run,
and some of them don't (quite randomly). I'll try this workaround and
see if that does it, because I know my jobs do generate output.

Funny thing is, the cron I was using with gentoo never had this problem
with the same set of scripts...

[Bug 256179] Re: libeditline does not support home/end/delete keys

2008-10-06 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
We actually are using it for a project at work because of GNU readline
is GPL, and that won't work for this particular project. However, there
is a test application included with libeditline that you can build, and
show the results.

Theres also probably a way using dpkg to find something that depends on
it, but I'm not sure how to do it.

[Bug 256179] [NEW] libeditline does not support home/end/delete keys

2008-08-08 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

libeditline does not support the ANSI key sequences for the home, end,
or delete keys, and prints out a ~ instead. This trivial patch enables
those keys to do the expected actions.

It would be really nice to have this for hardy. :)

Re: Re: How to detect whether an app is running inside of UME/hildon?

2008-04-23 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

Sorry for the delayed response. My thought about using DBUS to do the
detection is that doesn't that run for every instance of the user's
login shell? The use case I'm thinking of here is if hildon-desktop is
running on X on the computer's monitor, and you're also running X GUI
apps via X forwarding over SSH. Then conceivably the app would detect
that hildon was running, and enable/disable features accordingly...
which would not be the desired behavior, especially if you were running
your remote X sessions on OSX or Windows. Or, do I have a misconception
about how that works? Thanks.

Dustin

Why would you need a gconf key? Why not simply detect whether the
hildon-desktop name is registered on the session bus and use that
information to decide to enable hildon UI or not?

Usually GConf keys are for settings, but I'm not sure any user would
want the software to run in non-hildon mode when hildon-desktop is
  running or vice-versa.

[Bug 219406] [NEW] bash autocomplete broken when a : is in the path

2008-04-18 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

Say you have a directory that looks like so:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log/gdm$ ls
:0.log :0.log.1 :0.log.2 :0.log.3 :0.log.4 failsafe.log

and you try to view one of the files by typing

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log/gdm$ /var/log/gdm/:TAB KEY

Then immediately your command line will look like so:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log/gdm$ cat /var/log/gdm/:/var/log/gdm/\:0.log

However, if you type

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log/gdm$ /var/log/gdm/\:TAB KEY

then it will work as expected, like so:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log/gdm$ cat /var/log/gdm/\:0.log

[Bug 219425] [NEW] Clicking on the power button on UME desktop causes hildon-desktop to crash

2008-04-18 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: moblin-applets

My PC does NOT have a battery, and it is running UME. When I click on
the power icon (which shows an icon that is 'canceled' out, since there
is no battery), it takes down the hildon-desktop.

I ran hildon-desktop under GDB, and the following information was shown
after recompiling it with -g -ggdb

Program received signal SIGFPE, Arithmetic exception.
[Switching to Thread 0xb6bb2720 (LWP 5147)]
0xb683bc0b in moblin_applet_popup_cb (applet=0x820f000, event=0x80992e8)
at battery-applet.c:438
438 percent = (applet-charge_curr * 100) / applet-charge_max;

There are two problems as I see it. First the obvious error in libbattery.so.
Secondly, hildon-desktop has this huge tendency to crash anytime anything
running under it crashes, which is very annoying. It also has a tendency to NOT
tell you what happened unless you go looking for it.

[Bug 217067] Re: Cannot close midbrowser About dialog using mouse

2008-04-18 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Ok, so what I did was start Xorg via SSH, then ran the image creator
over SSH/X-forwarding and did all of that stuff mentioned there, went
into the chroot environment, then did export DISPLAY=:0. After that I
executed /etc/X11/Xsession , which started up the hildon environment.
Of course, none of the icons showed up (see bug 219041, it happens in my
normal environment too), so I launched midbrowser from the command line.

Long story short, the same issue happens with the about window. This was
using the daily build image from 4/18.

and may not be relevant), see bug 217067.

[Bug 219041] [NEW] No icons on UME desktop

2008-04-17 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-mobile

Hey, I just did an apt-get dist-upgrade on my machine running UME, and
the icons no longer work. Additionally, where the desktop was, suffers
from a 'bad drawing' problem now.. ie, you drag a window around and you
see where the window was and such. I suspect that it could be any
number of packages to fault (most likely flash somehow), since it
updated a bunch of packages:

The key thing here is that there are no error messages being output that
I can see. If anyone has any good ideas how to nail this one down and
find any relevant error messages, that would be great. Thanks.

How to detect whether an app is running inside of UME/hildon?

2008-04-16 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

I'm working (unofficially) on fixing wxWidgets SVN to support hildon
2.x, since it only supports 1.x at the moment (theres a patch to make it
funciton, but there are still some residual bugs). The biggest problem
as I see it is that it has #ifdef all over the place, substituting
hildon code for GTK code at compile time. It seems like to me that a
better way to do this is detect if its running inside a hildon-enabled
desktop, and then branch at runtime based on that, so it can support GTK
and Hildon in the same library, simplifying deployment/packaging/etc.

However, there doesn't seem to be any documented way to do this. Thoughts?

Re: How to change desktop look?

2008-04-16 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

I did add something, but not there... it didn't really seem like an
appropriate place. It probably should go in some sort of users guide,
but I can't create pages on the help site, so I added a note to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UMEGuide/HowTos , despite being
totally out of place there.

if you get it working ;)

AH-HA! There be the slimy buggers awesome, thanks.
We are trying to get this updated as it was the old mechanism, but I
don't know the status of that update.

Ok... well, maybe later I'll add some quick page/note to the Wiki
anyways, since anyone who is trying to utilize UME as I am would
probably be interested in that information (with a note that its going
to change at some point). Though... once I get the system working with
all the features I need, then I'm going to wipe the system and start
from scratch, and write a carputer-focused UME howto and update the
carputer section of my website with it. :)
The MP3 problem may be due to a missing gstreamer codec? But I assume
that you can play mp3's with mplayer already... Hm. -- not sure.
 Bob

Yeah... as I said, I haven't put a whole lot of effort into that, since
I don't actually have any speakers or anything setup on the carputer in
its current position under my desk, so I haven't tried to play it via
mplayer or anything else.

[Bug 217067] Re: Cannot close midbrowser About dialog using mouse

2008-04-15 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Ok... I am using UME on a normal PC that only has a 7 inch touchscreen,
and I currently do not have any desktops installed with Linux on them
(I've been meaning to, but haven't gotten around to it)... so Zephyr or
the daily build probably aren't good alternatives for me. Is there other
ways to install the daily build packages?

Re: How to change desktop look?

2008-04-14 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Spencer, Bob wrote:
 Nice screen shot.

Thanks, I'm definitely excited about using UME in my car. Love the
touchscreen-friendly interface. :)
Assuming you have a fairly recent drop of UME, new applications (like
 your GPS app) should:
   1) install a .desktop file into /usr/share/applications
   2) install an icon into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/size/type
   (e.g. /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps/mygps.png)

If #1 is done correctly, the app should show up in the UI.
If #1 and #2 are done, it will also have the right icon :)

Ok... now, looking at /usr/share/applications , there are a million
different things there. Now, for example, on my desktop, there is an
icon labeled Instant Messenger. So, I execute the following in that
directory:

grep -R Instant Messenger *

No results. I have noticed the presence of hildon related directories
however...

$ ls | grep hildon
hildon-control-panel
hildon-control-panel.desktop
hildon-home
hildon-marquee
hildon-navigator
hildon-status-bar

Now, I also have galculator on my desktop... so I make a copy of the
galculator.desktop in /usr/share/applications, and change the Name to
Galculator II, and name the file galculatorII.desktop. Restart the
desktop... no results. So.. I was thinking that /usr/share/applications
had something to do with it, but it seems that there is more than meets
the eye here.

There are also .desktop files in /etc/hildon-desktop ... however,
following their contents to wherever always seem to inevitably point to
some .so files, which is leading me to believe that its hardcoded
somewhere. So. any good thoughts?

Before going too much further, I should point out that since I'm running
this on what is (for all practical purposes) a normal PC, I have the UME
stuff installed side-by-side with ubuntu-desktop (I have GDM launch the
desktop for me with autologin enabled). I can't imagine that makes too
much of a difference, but I also realize that its not really supported
too...

Once this gets solved.. we're definitely going to need to put it into
the UME Wiki somewhere.
Hope that helps for what you're trying to do. As for playing MP3's
(from your blog), what errors are you facing? The songs needs to go
 into ~/media/audio.
Yep. It shows up in the UI, but complains about mp3 files in particular.
I installed the normal mp3 stuff... however, that didn't fix that
error. I haven't really looked into fixing this in any serious way yet
however, since I'm working on getting roadnav to look/work nicely in
UME. It may be related to having ubuntu-mobile installed side-by-side
with ubuntu-desktop too.. not sure.

Thanks!

How to change desktop look?

2008-04-13 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

So I can't figure out how to add new applets or remove old applets from
the hildon-desktop display. While it looks very nice (see
http://www.virtualroadside.com/blog/index.php/2008/04/05/ubuntu-mobile-screenshot-on-my-carputer/

for screenshot), I don't really need the non-working apps, since they
don't work. And, I would love to add my GPS application (which is
finally *almost* ready to be used with a touchscreen, thanks to hildon
support in wxWidgets) to the desktop... but can't figure that out. I get
to a deadend when I get to /usr/share/applications/hildon-home ... which
points to a library. Thanks!

Status of moblin-media?

2008-04-04 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

I'm curious, is there any particular reason that moblin media is a
million revisions behind upstream (0.25 vs 0.5 for upstream)? I
installed moblin-media and the updated moko-finger-scroll packages from
the moblin git, and everything seems to be working a lot better than the
one currently in Ubuntu now (for example... it no longer crashes on
startup). Of course... with either of the versions I still can't get the
stupid programs to play MP3's, so I suppose it doesn't matter a whole lot.

[Bug 204633] Re: touchscreen only outputs right angles

2008-04-04 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
The evtouch driver is improperly configured by default (I've been
meaning to file a bug about this this is as a good place as any to
get someone to actually fix this ) with an undocumented option called
MoveLimit. It's set by default to a value like 180 or something like
that... try setting it to 50 or so, and see if you get better results.

Add the following to your xorg.conf file in the evtouch section:

   Option MoveLimit 40

Adjust the value suitably, and it should fix it.

[Bug 212073] [NEW] Touchscreen stops functioning correctly in Xorg if the device is removed/reinserted

2008-04-04 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When using a touchscreen that requires specific calibration options
(ie... the generic evdev driver won't work out of the box with it), then
when the device is unplugged/powered off/removed, the device file in
/dev is no longer associated with the device, and the driver does not
know to reload the device when it is reinserted.

This is fixed by allowing Xorg drivers to receive arbitrary options via
the HAL hotplug mechanism (which is currently implemented, but only
supports the evdev driver for simple cases, and does NOT allow most
options to be set). Upstream has fixed this with commit
47eb658e802775021e3efec109f95431cca188ca in Xorg git... its a pretty
simple patch, and doesn't change any major components.

After the Xorg patch is applied, then the user can use FDI files placed
in /etc/hal/fdi/information to configure the device. The following is an
example FDI file I use with the evtouch driver, and my eGalax
touchscreen:

[Bug 208790] [NEW] administrative rights cannot be obtained without a keyboard

2008-03-29 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: moblin-applets

I am using Ubuntu Hardy, with the ubuntu-mobile package installed. The
problem is simple: control panel applets like the touchscreen
configuration require administrator access, so it launches gksudo.
However, gksudo grabs all input, so there is no way to launch the
keyboard applet and enter in your password.

To replicate:

1. Open hildon-control-panel
2. Open touchscreen applet
3. Observe gksudo appearing, with no mechanism to enter in the password without
a keyboard

You can use gconf-editor to enable the 'disable-grab' option in
/app/gksu ... which *almost* works, however you still cannot click on
the keyboard applet to make it work, instead the mouse icon continues to
spin waiting for gksu input.

How can I help?

2008-03-19 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Hey,

I'd love to help out with Alpha testing, dev, whatever... just need
someone to point me to something. :) While I don't have a phone to do
any of this on, I am using UME for my car computer, which has a 7-in
touchscreen. From what I've seen, I think UME would be a great platform
for touchscreen-oriented apps. I've done a lot of dev stuff on random
projects, in various programming languages from assembly and C to
javascript and PHP, with many random things in between.

Just looking to sink my teeth into something so I can help make my
carputer work better. :)

[Bug 91498] gnome screensaver only on one screen with NVidia-9755/xinerama

2007-03-11 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

With Feisty, NVidia drivers 1.0.9755 (actually, anything above 8776 is
affected) with xinerama, gnome screensaver only shows up on one screen,
and does not blank the other screens. I found a recommendation to
disable composite, but its still broken.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Also along these lines, the 'properties' page breaks also -- it shows up
and quickly disappears:

[Bug 89884] Giant memory leak

2007-03-05 Thread Dustin Spicuzza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

Gaim 2.0.0beta6 on Feisty has an apparent huge memory leak. After
leaving it on overnight, memory usage according to the system monitor
has grown to 447.3MB. It was running on my desktop behind gnome-
screensaver. One buddy window was open (AIM), and the icon was an
animated one. Additionally, I am using it for both AIM and MSN
messenger, and in the morning there was a new email waiting. It is not
really using any processor time at all. Additionally, some non-standard
features of my system:

- xinerama, 3 monitors running on 2 NVidia cards
- I use KDE kicker in the gnome environment for because its support for being
positioned on the side of the screen is better
