I don't agree with the justification but the upstream linux kernel bug
(#15313) has been closed.

[Bug 518818] Re: ath9k driver not working properly with AR9285

2010-11-14 Thread Gavindi
I have previously downloaded (starting at comment #52) compat-
wireless-2010-09-12 from http://www.orbit-lab.org/kernel/compat-
wireless-2.6/ and reported success with my ath9k NIC and several others
have done also with the same result.

What I have noticed since is that while this is working fine, my Samsung
R580 laptop has been on A/C power. As soon as I run from battery (and
therefore some power-saving comes into action), I get the same result
loss of connectivity as I had before I thought it was fixed.

I am now trying compat-wireless-2010-11-13.tar.bz2 and I will run from
battery instead of A/C to see what happens. Stay tuned.

2010-09-14 Thread Gavindi
Well nearing 24hours later and 'compat-wireless-2010-09-12' has
certainly fixed my wifi dropouts. I agree with Franck, Is there a chance
that linux-backports-modules-wireless-maverick-generic shipping with
Ubuntu 10.10 final gets updated to this version ?

I've just downloaded and installed the ath9k module from 'compat-

may be resolved. I will report back after more testing.

[Bug 433972] Re: Internet ping very slow on Karmic Koala

2009-10-08 Thread Gavindi
I am feeling the affect of this too. Sometimes its works well but usually its
so slow it's unusable. This is on my wireless connection and I am unable to
test (due to my particular setup) the wired connection.
From lspci:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan]
Network Connection (rev 02)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)

I also have a netbook running 9.04 and the speeds are good so it seems
to only be karmic that is having the issue.

[Bug 352732] Re: [jaunty] Sound muted after boot

2009-06-01 Thread Gavindi
Ok,
I've found a fix that works for me. I was find that if I didn't shut down my
computer gracefully (and there letting /etc/init.d/alsa-utils run it's stop
procedure) that the sound levels would be set and un-muted on next boot.

Therefore, I commented out line 372 in /etc/init.d/alsa-utils:

# mute_and_zero_levels $TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1

Now when I reboot gracefully, the sound levels are correct. I would
suspect that there is a bit a race condition happening. I am supposing
the alsa-utils script is being called twice and as the levels have been
muted and zero'd the first time around, the second time around sees
the zero'd levels get saved as the Alsa state.

I think the udev and rc.d is invoking the script twice..

This is however just a theory, but it makes sense!!! (I Hope)

[Bug 36651] Re: Network Manager does not remember WEP/WPA key

2008-10-03 Thread Gavindi
Updated to NM 0.7~~svn20080928t225540+eni0-0ubuntu2 and rebooted. Upon login it
asked for my WEP key again so I entered it. :(
Then I rebooted again and logged back in and hey presto! I was connected
without having to re-enter my WEP key. It seems that entering the key one more
time after updating, has re-saved the key.
Woohoo! :)
Confirmed as fixed for me.

[Bug 198531] Re: Connecting to SSH or Samba server gives The specified location is not mounted error

2008-03-17 Thread Gavindi
I personally wouldn't want a bookmark for a one-time open of a remote location.
I know that bookmarking is what we have to do as the momentary fix but we need
this fixed upstream. If you look at the upstream activity
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=520390), there has been some
movement and some suggestions but no solution as of yet.
Having a 'Connect to server' function is nice but without it working without
enabling the bookmarking option and then entering a name is quite
counter-intuitive and a step back.

[Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login)

2007-10-09 Thread Gavindi
I have three PCs, two desktop with nVidia cards and one laptop with
Intel 945 and the last Compiz fixes have not helped. I noticed that in
todays updates that there is new gnome-panel patches and I was hopeful
that it may have helped the situation. But alas, the problem still
persists on all three machines.

As an aside:
We are getting very close to Gutsy's release date, does an executive decision
need to be made on Compiz (eg rollback to last known good or disabled by
default)?

[Bug 124519] Re: need to add max texture size check

2007-09-20 Thread Gavindi
Here's my logic, tell me if it's wrong:
People don't submit bug reports when things are working and when this was
working (before the last updates) for the nVidia users, it seems that there
were also no complaints from the ATI users. The wrapper may need to be patched
and if it breaks for ATI users, then they would be inclined to submit a bug
report and that way the affect will be known.
Also, as Daniel stated, it is doubtful that compiz is using 3D textures so this
would be the wrong variable to test on any graphics adaptor.

[Bug 134267] Re: [Tribe5] Need to de-activated and re-activated to work right

2007-09-17 Thread Gavindi
I am unsure of the relevance but I had also had issues with the network manager
applet not loading. I try to restart the network service
(/etc/init.d/networking) but to no avail. The only option is to reboot the
computer. This is with the ipw3495 chipset btw.
Attached is the relevant section of the daemon.log.

[Bug 43379] Re: nm-applet vanished from tray

2007-09-17 Thread Gavindi
Yes it is the daemon crashing and the bug you refer to has the same output in
the daemon log. Trying to start NM will only end up with another crash.
Does this bug need to be re-allocated/categorised?

Anyhow, here is my daemon.log output to show that I am having the same
symptoms.

[Bug 43379] Re: nm-applet vanished from tray

2007-09-17 Thread Gavindi
Further to my last post, I am experiencing this on Gutsy Tribe5+Updates.
The applet itself seems fine, it is the daemon causing the issue.

[Bug 43379] Re: nm-applet vanished from tray

2007-09-17 Thread Gavindi
I was meaning to try that as suggested but since then, I have applied
todays updates in order to see if Bug #140469 is still an issue and do
you think that the NM daemon wants to crash? It's behaving itself at the
moment. I'll have to wait for it to happen again I suppose.

[Bug 43379] Re: nm-applet vanished from tray

2007-09-17 Thread Gavindi
The NetworkManager daemon has died again (I had a good run of about four
reboots though!) and as suggested I killed wpa_supplicant prior to
restart NetworkManager - It worked! Looks like wpa_supplicant is the
culprit huh?

[Bug 134267] Re: [Tribe5] Need to de-activated and re-activated to work right

2007-09-11 Thread Gavindi
I have tested one more of the three machines affected and this one is using a
wired connection. After running all the updates and partial dist upgrade this
morning, I had to do the old disable enable networking after I rebooted.
Attached is the daemon.log.

[Bug 41803] Re: Can't have two slashes error while loading configuration

2007-09-08 Thread Gavindi
Running Gutsy Tribe5 with the latest updates and I have had this message appear
too.
My Network-Manager is:
ii network-manager0.6.5-0ubuntu10
network management framework daemon
ii network-manager-gnome 0.6.5-0ubuntu8
network management framework (GNOME frontend

It also asked for my WEP key again at that point of login. I re-entered
this and everything worked. I then rebooted and the error was gone. The
interesting thing for me here is that sometimes upon login, my standard
Ubuntu theme isn't applied properly. Makes me think the GCONF may be
responsible for a few things here
