Hi Mohamed, I'm sorry but in the past someone has helped me with the
packaging. Can anyone pick this up or talk me through the process? I've
never done it.

[Bug 1275798] Re: 14.04 wallpapers package

2014-03-10 Thread Iain Farrell
We're shortlisting images as we speak but are still waiting on some
contributions from people - the high res images always take a little
while to come in. This time they're taking longer than expected. I'll
upload what we have as soon as I have it.

Also, one image may not be the property of the person who has uploaded
so I'll validate that before we add it here.

[Bug 1045841] [NEW] Ownership of Blue Dandelion image cannot be confirmed so it must be removed from 12.10 release

2012-09-04 Thread Iain Farrell
Public bug reported:

The Blue Dandelion image shortlisted to be included in the next release
appears to have been added without the original creator's consent. I
have attempted to contact them but they have not replied and the person
who submitted it on Flickr has not responded to questions about where
the image came from.

I attach a revised version of the wallpaper package for all releases and
have:

- Updated the authors file
- Quantal specific XML
- Removed the Blue Dandelion image
- Updated version number to 0.36.0

[Bug 832925] Re: Banshee crashing after 1minute 21

2011-09-30 Thread Iain Farrell
Reproducable steps are as follows.

1. Start Banshee using terminal and command banshee --debug
banshee-debug.txt
2. Banshee was set to shuffle by song last time and has remembered this
setting. User simply hits play and track starts
3. Outstanding Beatles record, or any other track for that matter, stops after
1:21 _unless_ that track is less than 1:21 in which case it carries on to the
next track and seems to be fine. My debug text can be found on pastebin - see
link below.

[Bug 861240] [NEW] Launcher bug reported by post to Canonical London office

once we've released.

His letter is here

[Bug 850906] [NEW] Login screen displayed at incorrect resolution when booting with external monitor attached

2011-09-15 Thread Iain Farrell
Public bug reported:

When booting my plucky laptop with my external VGA monitor attached I
get a login screen in 11.10 that is 1024 x 768 mirrored. It's stretched
on the VGA monitor and displayed neatly in the middle of the screen on
the laptop. When I boot with no monitor attached the login screen
displays at the correct and native resolution of the laptop screen.

External monitor is an HP 2009v and the laptop driving it is an Acer
1810TZ. Their native resolutions are 1600 x 900 and 1366 x 768.

I already have lightdm-gtk-greeter installed so I don't think it's that.
Could uninstall and reinstall to see what happens ... Anything else I
can do to help debug this?

[Bug 834592] [NEW] System hangs during boot with Checking battery state on screen

2011-08-26 Thread Iain Farrell
Public bug reported:

After some digging it appears that lightdm isn't starting properly. One
fix appears to be Ctrl+Alt+F1,user and password and startx but I fixed
it by switching to using GDM - sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow gdm.

This happened after I ran updates on Wednesday of this week.

2011-08-24 Thread Iain Farrell
Public bug reported:

Every time I open Banshee it seems to quit/ crash out after exactly 1
minute and 21 seconds. To recreate I open Banshee from the sound menu,
choose any album and double click the first track to play it. Then,
after 1 minute and 21 seconds without any warning it stops playing. I
get no crash notification so I wonder if it's a broken config somewhere!

Re: [ubuntu-art] Wallpapers in 11.10

2011-07-07 Thread Iain Farrell

Hi Ross

Sorry to hear you're unhappy. I wasn't trying to come over as a troll
and I don't think Martin was either. The wallpaper we were looking at
was very clearly not an original work and the Ubuntu elements included
weren't the up to date ones so I think it's fair to say that back and
Martin's suggestion that we don't include these materials may well give
the assets a longer shelf life.

We're all working hard to get Ubuntu into the hands of as many people as
possible and part of what I focus on with the designers here at
Canonical is ensuring that use of our brand elements is consistent so
that wherever someone comes across Ubuntu they know that what they're
looking at is related to the core project - an incredibly powerful, free
and open-source operating system.

We can't go back and update old content but we can make sure that what
we create now uses the proper assets as a starting point. That doesn't
mean that we can't play with the assets but we should all start with the
proper up to date materials.

2011-07-06 Thread Iain Farrell

Hey all

We'll welcome non photographic wallpapers just like we did in the last
release although I'm not convinced that the Prateek's example is the way
to go, not least because it doesn't feature the proper Circle of friends
or logo type but also because it's adorned with Adidas logos and was
clearly created as part of another campaign :)

A wallpaper should try to be clean, simple and elegant. Someone's going
to look at it for a long time. If no one's going to step forward then
I'll happily run the process again. Let me know and we can get a blog
post out this week to kick things off!

the process for submissions and deliver an amazing set of
wallpapers? I'll keep a toe in and stay on as an advisor.

What do we think? If not I am happy to keep it truckin' along.

- 4. Tweak compression if required or way over (we can optimise this later)
- 5. Upload to main
+   1. Publish the list of winning entries on design.canonical.com

relevant metadata on Flickr
+   3. Scale all the images to the same 2000px width and corresponding height
to maintain aspect ratio. If in doubt this should be done from the centre.
+   4. I understand that compression is managed when it's packaged so if it's

Re: [ubuntu-art] IMPORTANT : Natty illustration wallpaper submissions group

2011-02-21 Thread Iain Farrell

Hey everyone

I just wanted to reiterate what Vish is saying here about keeping the
non photo submissions in the same group as the photo ones. I'll copy in
here what I've posted on the Flickr group page.

Hi everyone

There seems to be some confusion around submissions for Natty. To
reiterate what I wrote above and in the blog post update, we will be
looking at all wallpaper submissions in _this_ group
(http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/). If you've submitted to
another group we won't see them as part of the judging process.

We have stated that at least three wallpapers will be non photographic
but the wallpapers should be considered as a set and I trust that the
judges will be able to see the difference between a photo and an
illustration and will select wallpaper submissions on their merit as a
suitable background rather than whether they're rendered or a photograph.

Having all the submissions in one group makes it much easier for the
judges. Apologies to anyone who's confused about this process.

The submissions to the other group look great and by all means leave
your entries there too but if you'd like them to be considered as part
of Natty then we'd love to have you submit them here too.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Iain

I've been out of the office for the last few days and looks like it's
been busy on the list so if any of this is unclear or causes undue
concern please do find me on IRC or keep the thread going.

Submissions are looking great and I think we have a strong set coming
together. Thanks again everyone for all your hard work.

Iain

Hi,
In case folks have not seen Thorsten's post about this:
http://thorwil.wordpress.com/2011/02/15/watch-out-regarding-natty-wallpaper-submissions/

The submissions for the natty wallpaper illustration *should* be in the
Ubuntu Artwork Group :http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/
and not anywhere else.

One person is spreading false information and trying to propagate his
own private groups. DO NOT BE MISLEAD by such false propaganda.

If you have been mislead, *kindly* re-submit to the right group, Ubuntu
artwork group :http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/ and tag
the submission as NattyWallpaper.
I've asked Iain about this, and he mentioned that the judges will be
looking at the Official Ubuntu artwork group and not anywhere else.

So, if you have not submitted at the right place, the judges will not be
looking at your submissions.

Quoting from Iain's post on:
http://design.canonical.com/2011/01/the-natty-wallpaper-contest-an-important-update/
As before with the photographic entries simply tag your image
NattyWallpaper so we can easily find it when judging time comes.

This means, submit to the 'Ubuntu artwork' group and tag it
NattyWallpaper.

Re: [ubuntu-art] 3 community wallpapers will be included in Natty

Oh well, at least we get a guarantee of 3 illustrative wallpapers on the

though to make sure it's all good.
I'll find a bod here to ask but I'd imagine it's not an issue. These
files will likely be smaller than a photo as they're likely to be less
complex but I'll check in with the platform guys and try and get a steer
on how much room I have on the disk.

We can also point people to the group on Flickr and finalists on the
other site to ensure that the community have plenty of pictures to
choose from.

Hey guys

Exciting idea this, thinking of the showcase in terms of a theme. On the
desktop development team we've been working to the theme laid out by
Mark some time ago, of light. Perhaps light would be a good starting
point for these assets too and will make them feel like they're more at

I believe that the descision was made at uds that the freeculture
showcase was about great art, and not about ubuntu specifically. Iain'
s idea of using light as a theme is great in principle. However it may
be prone to once again receiving ubuntu specific artwork?

I don't know, light's a pretty universal theme. If I have a look at my
photo collection for example I can see a few pictures where light is a
central theme. It can be interpreted quite broadly.

[Bug 551896] Re: sensitive area for scrollbar is too narrow in Google Docs

2010-03-30 Thread Iain Farrell
I've successfully recreated this but only in Firefox. All other
applications seem fine. It also occurs when using other themes.

Clickable area in a Google doc just doesn't seem to match up with all of
the groove that the scrollbar sits in.

Put in a request and explain why the event needs them. It may depend a
bit on the timing of the event in the cycle, if it is close to the Lucid
launch then they may be running out of Karmic ones, or alternatively
they may be looking to offload them at any opportunity! The only way to
find out is to ask, and this isn't really the place to do that.

[ubuntu-uk] User testing - tell your friends!

2010-02-03 Thread Iain Farrell

Because it's almost certainly your friends we're after rather than you.

Don't take that the wrong way, you're brilliant! Your love for free and
open source software has helped make a great distro of Ubuntu and we
know you're routinely getting friends interested in the project and
using Ubuntu. We'd like to see how some of the less technical, recently
converted find Ubuntu.

We're looking for:

- General computer users
- _NOT_ daily Ubuntu users
- _DO_ use IM a lot
- _DO_ live in or around London and can make an hour long session next
week Monday - Friday in office hours.

If you think you know someone please do pass this on. We're offering £40
cash incentives for people who take part. If you have any questions
please don't hesitate to get in touch!
