[Bug 2071463] [NEW] Duplicate unread message notifications between dash and dock

2024-06-28 Thread Jake Hoban
Public bug reported:

When there are unread messages in a messaging app (e.g. Mattermost,
Telegram, Proton Mail, whatsapp-for-linux - some of these are installed
from deb and some from snap) the unread count appears in the dash, but
stays after I've read the messages unless I also dismiss it from the
Gnome dock notification centre. The only way to stop that behaviour
seems to be to set "do not disturb" in Gnome dock but that's not what i
want. I want notifications for unread messages, which disappear
automatically when I've read them.

Screenshot attached - Mattermost icon in dash shows 3 unread messages,
although they have all been read. At the top you see the notification
centre where I have to click away the messages to make the count on the
icon go down.

Looks like Settings > Accessibility > Typing > Enable by Keyboard must
be off as well to log in (gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.keyboard
enable false).

[Bug 1461834] Re: 1024-bit signing keys should be deprecated

2024-05-08 Thread Jake Lepere
Enabling FIPS on Ubuntu Pro 22.04+ machines [1] drops rsa1024 as an
available encryption key because rsa1024 isn't FIPS compliant.
Therefore, adding rsa1024 signed apt keys here isn't possible.

Does anyone have suggestions to work around this? I've asked if maintainers
could resign apt keys for relevant repos but haven't heard back. Additionally,
adding apt keys before enabling FIPS works, but future apt updates
unfortunately fail afterwards.

After updating your package information, the essential package
'ubuntu-minimal' could not be located. This may be because you have
no official mirrors listed in your software sources, or because of
excessive load on the mirror you are using. See /etc/apt/sources.list

[Bug 1929591] [NEW] MD RAID 6 Periodic Kernel Panic Stack Overflow Double-Fault

2021-05-25 Thread Jake Staehle
Public bug reported:

Hello:
Every few days I get a kernel panic on my Ubuntu Server 20.10 box, which was
recently upgraded to a Ryzen 3700X. I have 7 WD Red Pro HDDs in a RAID 6 array
with Linux MD, and they're all attached to a LSI 9211-8ik PCIe card.
Motherboard is currently a Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro. My Ubuntu install is
running the latest 5.8.0-53 kernel.

This is the 2nd hardware configuration with the exact same kernel panic text.
Previously I had these HDDs directly connected to the SATA controller of a
ASRock X570 Pro4 ATX mobo with the same 3700X. I was also previously using
Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS -- I had upgraded to 20.10 in hopes that the newer
kernel would fix it, which it did not.

I had posted a whole story on StackOverflow about this journey if you're
interested:
https://superuser.com/questions/1615400/md-raid-6-periodic-kernel-panic-possible-kernel-bug

However, I am now convinced this is a Linux kernel bug in the MD driver.

Example 1 kernel panic:

FWIW and perhaps expectedly, the subsequent do-release-upgrade step also
mangles the permissions.

[Bug 1904745] [NEW] File permissions in /var/lib/nova/.ssh broken in upgrade

2020-11-18 Thread Jake Hill
Public bug reported:

I am doing series upgrade on charmed openstack following the normal
procedure. The upgrade is cloud:bionic-ussuri to focal distro.

On compute units I notice that running apt full-upgrade prior to doing
do-release-upgrade results in incorrect file permissions on
/var/lib/nova/.ssh/. This in turn breaks migrations at least.

I did not catch if it was nova-common or nova-compute that did this
during the upgrade, but something wrote 644 on everything.

[Bug 1893584] Re: ayatana-indicator-datetime-service crashed with signal 5 in g_object_new_valist()

2020-10-13 Thread Jake McGregor
I'll also add this same thing happens on armhf on Raspberry Pi 4 4GB as
well. It doesn't seem to negatively affect the rest of the system, but
I'll note I've changed some of the indicators that appear on the top
bar, so I'm likely not using the one that's crashing.

[Bug 1889967] [NEW] virtualbox-dkms 6.1.12-dfsg-8: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2020-08-01 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

My system had recently rebooted after a kernel update when this
appeared. VirtualBox was not in use before or after the reboot. This bug
appears similar to #1081307, but given it was posted 6 years ago, I'm
reluctant to mark it as the same bug. The error message and the fact I'm
using Nvidia graphics seems interesting, so I have to wonder if it's the
same issue appearing again or somewhere else.

[Bug 1873506] Re: ubuntu/focal64 fails to mount Vagrant shared folders

2020-05-26 Thread Jake Cobb
Yes, there is some lag. Although the image is named 0522, it was not
available until the 25th of May, note the created message from your
link:

"v20200522.0.0 currently released version
This version was created about 24 hours ago."

I did test the 0518 focal image and it was not fixed, 0522 is the first
that works.

[Bug 1874453] Re: ubuntu/focal64 very slow to boot and reboots once

2020-05-07 Thread Jake Cobb
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected uec-images

** Description changed:

Using `ubuntu/focal64` version `20200423.0.0`, the boot process is
extremely slow and the box always reboots once before completing a
successful boot. With default settings, this causes a timeout in
Vagrant waiting for SSH to be available. Setting a long enough timeout
it does eventually boot successfully. For comparison, `ubuntu/bionic64`
boots successfully in roughly 10 seconds on my machine.

This appears to be the big hang-up:

  Apr 23 14:00:12 ubuntu-focal kernel: [0.219784] printk: console [tty1]
enabled
  Apr 23 14:00:12 ubuntu-focal kernel: [ 76.448371] printk: console [ttyS0]
enabled

I have a hard time telling where exactly it reboots because my
/var/log/syslog only ends up with the second boot. I can watch it in
Virtualbox though and it suddenly reboots, then the second boot process
runs to completion. The long delay shown above happens both times
making the total time to a successful boot very long. Here is the head
  of my /var/log/syslog:

Not sure how to test this as requested by the bot. I don't think just
enabling proposed on an existing published image is sufficient. Are

[Bug 1229738] Re: grub doesn't boot with efi and md raid root

2020-03-07 Thread Jake Hemmerle
I am experiencing these same symptoms while trying to install Ubuntu
18.04 in UEFI mode with a 4-disk RAID10 as root on my R410. ESP gets
mounted at /boot/efi, kernel/ramdisk get installed to /boot, and the
ESP's grub.cfg points to another grub.cfg that is only accessable after
the array is assembled. The result on boot is Grub CLI that isn't able
to identify any partitions (ie 'ls (hd0)' results in an unknown
filesystem error). Will try above soon and report back.

[Bug 1859276] Re: package samba-common-bin 2:4.11.1+dfsg-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-01-16 Thread Jake McGregor
Thanks for the input. I've been meaning to fix my Samba config, and this
only made it more obvious. For quite a while it's been 'If it ain't
broke, don't fix it.'. Well, obviously it was broken I just never
noticed. Even with the errors, my machines were still able to connect to
it fine, though I did notice version 1 support was dropped, which
affected a few old network printers. I've since fixed that issue. I have
updates installed via a Bash script on Pulseway, so I don't usually see
the output unless there's a problem with Apt that caused it to fail.

As for Webmin, I suspect it relies on Python 2, which I hear is steadily
being removed from Focal. Since it's still being maintained, this will
probably be fixed soon. While this has nothing to do with Samba, it was
the tool I was using to manage it. I saw it was removed a few days after
this was posted to fix a dependency issue.

[Bug 1859276] [NEW] package samba-common-bin 2:4.11.1+dfsg-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-01-11 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

I attempted to upgrade a system to focal for beta testing. Everything
except Samba upgraded fine and the system rebooted without issue. I
think this error was caused by my aging Samba config, which is probably
pushing 10 years old now and likely has parameters no longer supported
and was designed in my early high school days. Up until this upgrade, it
worked fine without issue.

What I found a little strange is how my outdated config was preventing
it from being properly installed. I was able to get the upgrade
completed by removing Samba, deleting my config file and replacing it
with a blank one, and applying the remaining upgrades. Once that was
done, Samba was installed again. I was able to generate a new Samba
config with Webmin and my systems can access the share just fine.

[Bug 1854205] [NEW] nameservers update differently with openconnect and openconnect-gnome in ubuntu 18.04

2019-11-27 Thread Jake Cross
Public bug reported:

[What I expected to happen]
openconnect (command line) and network-manager-openconnect-gnome behave in the
same way when it comes to resolving hosts through the vpn

[What happened]
openconnect from the command line sets up the system in a way that can resolve
hosts through the vpn. network-manager-openconnect-gnome does not set up the
system in a way that can resolve hosts through the vpn.

[Steps to reproduce]

This seems to be a new issue with network-manager-openconect-gnome in
Ubuntu 18.04+

I install sudo apt install network-manager-openconnect-gnome to get
gnome integration with opeconnect and Cisco AnyConnect Compatible VPN
(openconnect)

As an aside (which may actually be relevant) I do this to get *.local
addresses to resolve:

sudo ln -sf /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf as per
systemd docs
Move dns before mdns4_minimal in /etc/nsswitch.conf

If I connect to the VPN with openconnect through the gnome network
manager, VPN addresses (sites for work) do not resolve. Regular sites
continue to work as expected.

If I connect to the VPN with openconnect on the command line with sudo
openconnect vpn.mycompany.com, VPN addresses (sites for work) do
resolve. Regular sites continue to work as expected.

I thought I would check to see if there were any differences between
/etc/resolv.conf with each of these VPN connection methods and sure
enough, there is one:

openconnect on the command line (working):

#@VPNC_GENERATED@ -- this file is generated by vpnc
# and will be overwritten by vpnc
# as long as the above mark is intact
# This file is managed by man:systemd-resolved(8). Do not edit.
#
# This is a dynamic resolv.conf file for connecting local clients directly to
# all known uplink DNS servers. This file lists all configured search domains.
#
# Third party programs must not access this file directly, but only through the
# symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage man:resolv.conf(5) in a different way,
# replace this symlink by a static file or a different symlink.
#
# See man:systemd-resolved.service(8) for details about the supported modes of
# operation for /etc/resolv.conf.

nameserver 10.10.10.10
nameserver 10.10.10.11
search broadband mycompany.com

openconnect gnome integration (not working):

# This file is managed by man:systemd-resolved(8). Do not edit.
#
# This is a dynamic resolv.conf file for connecting local clients directly to
# all known uplink DNS servers. This file lists all configured search domains.
#
# Third party programs must not access this file directly, but only through the
# symlink at /etc/resolv.conf. To manage man:resolv.conf(5) in a different way,
# replace this symlink by a static file or a different symlink.
#
# See man:systemd-resolved.service(8) for details about the supported modes of
# operation for /etc/resolv.conf.

nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 10.10.10.10
nameserver 10.10.10.11
search broadband mycompany.com

If I remove (or comment out) the nameserver 192.168.1.1, which is the
difference in content between the working and not working files...
everything works as expected. I can resolve addresses within the company
and regular sites work as expected.

This does not happen with Fedora. Everything works out of the box. I'm
not sure why the network-manager-openconnect-gnome package works
differently or if there's a way I can make it work without either

Editing the file by hand.
Using the openconnect tool from the command line and keeping a terminal
open running that command.

[Bug 1304067] Re: Mouse cursor changes size in some GTK2 applications

2019-07-31 Thread Jake Vincent
Also experiencing this odd bug on a Dell XPS 13 9350 with an external
monitor. My built-in display is 1920x1080, but my external monitor is a
4K 27" display (3840x2160). When I am experiencing the issue, the mouse
pointer is just abnormally huge on both screens, *unless* the pointer is
in a particular app, like Firefox.

The solution for me is not to power on the computer with the external
display connected. If I power on the computer, get to the log in screen,
and attach the external display at this point, then when I log in,
everything is normal--I have a pointer that is an acceptable size, and
it stays the same size no matter which monitor it's on or which app it's
in. I haven't figured out what happens yet if I attach the external
display after logging in.

[Bug 1820604] Re: curtin fails to find itself in subiquity snap, when running on serial-subiquity@.service

2019-07-01 Thread Jake Billo
I also receive the same "Unable to find helpers or 'curtin' exe to add
to path" error as Jim K reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/curtin/+bug/1820604/comments/18, after
defining a partition layout in the installer. I am installing on a
Lanner FW-8758 using a Rufus-generated USB stick and have tried both
"ubuntu-18.04.2-live-server-amd64.iso" and "ubuntu-18.04.2-server-
amd64.iso".

I activated the serial console output using similar instructions to
https://github.com/ynkjm/ubuntu-serial-install - mainly adding
"console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8" where necessary.

Unfortunately dropping to shell after the failure occurs won't let me
log in to investigate further, or at least I don't know the appropriate
credentials (root and ubuntu users with a blank password, or the same
username/password result in an authentication failure.)

When installing using VGA mode and without the grub parameters, this
error didn't occur on the same hardware and without having adjusted the
partitions on the SSD.

It'd be great to get an updated install ISO, or at least a workaround
that I could use to pre-prepare a USB stick in case I have to drop back
to using the console port.

If it's a different clock, it should be a simple patch to get it

Upon installing libinput, and uninstalling synaptics, all mention of
ELAN has disappeared from dmesg, and /dev/input shows nothing related to
mouse/ touchpad.

Hardware debugging told me nothing useful, other than the device is
physically there and receiving power.

[Bug 1795292] Re: ELAN469D touch pad not working

2018-10-10 Thread Jake Jensen
Kernel 4.19.0-rc7
Laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 330S-15ARR. Same issue as everyone else.

Attempting to install various ALPS drivers doesn't work, nor does the
i8042.reset workaround.

Patching elan_i2c_core to add the 469D entry also failed.

Notes: noapic is required for the laptop to load into Ubuntu.

[Bug 477] Re: Config of pure-ftpd need to be simplified.

Obviously, this package has been updated since the original bug /
feature ticket was placed. Is it possible that the ability to use a
single conf file (with options as documented in the upstream package)
was added and the ticket just hasn't been updated?

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-08-22 Thread Jake Billo
With the sysctl settings provided by Pete (vm.min_free_kbytes = 100
and vm.zone_reclaim_mode = 1), we've been running the linux-aws
4.4.0-1028.37 kernel successfully without an OOM killer invocation for
about four days now. Previously we would have seen three or more
occurrences of this per day, so it's a positive indication.

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-08-16 Thread Jake Billo
Apologies - the file was inadvertently split by logrotate. I have
concatenated the entire contents of kern.log and kern.log.1 into the
attached file; these are the only kern.log files in /var/log on the
system.

I do have to redact the hostname in question, but it is a simple
substitution of 'localhost' for the FQDN of the system.

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-08-16 Thread Jake Billo
We are also experiencing this issue running linux-aws 4.4.0-1028.37,
which tracks Ubuntu kernel 4.4.0-89.112. Our use case is very similar to
comment #86
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1655842/comments/86).
In our case ElasticSearch 2.4.5 is running under Java 1.8.0_131 with a
~29GB heap; we downsized from 31GB as a troubleshooting effort with no
change to the frequency of OOM. The issue also occurs regardless of
vm.overcommit_memory being set to 0, 1 or 2.

The relevant data from kern.log (with redacted hostname) is attached;
I'm happy to provide additional logs or test different kernels, but
since our use case is i3-class instances in AWS, we need the nvme
enhancements and enhanced network I/O provided by the linux-aws package.

[Bug 1627612] [NEW] systemctl restart xxx* does not restart inactive services

2016-09-26 Thread Jake Yip
Public bug reported:

Man pages of systemctl indicates that the start, restart, status takes
in [PATTERN], which accepts wildcard.

However, for an inactive service, it does not work UNLESS --all is
provided, which does not make sense for a command like restart. If one
wants to restart only if service is active, there is the try-restart
command.

To replicate

1. Stop a service. `systemctl stop sysstat.service`
2. Restart with wildcard. `systemctl restart sysstat*`
3. Check service status. It should still be inactive.
4. Restart with --all wildcard. `systemctl restart --all sysstat*`
5. Check again, service should have been started.

[Bug 1558737] Re: fsmonitor missing

This issue is forcing me to create my own package - the `-repeat watch`
functionality is essential! And unison-fsmonitor is already compiled
successfully by the package build script - we just don't package it.

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2016-02-11 Thread Jake McGregor
The only thing I can add here (and hopefully I'm not repeating anyone
here) is /boot claims to be about 75% full, and I have also seen it 100%
on another system of mine. It appears the problem is during the
transition between kernel 4.3 and 4.4. I use an encrypted partition on
both systems, one of which is a Surface Pro 3 using secure boot (if that
matters to anyone). I have only had one case where the system was unable
to boot because of this. Lucky for me I have a cloud backup. The others
I caught it in time. I was able to keep the system stable by fixing what
appeared to be a dependency error. Then again not rebooting might have
also helped. My guess is the Ubuntu installer didn't leave much space on
/boot, though normally all that is stored there is a few kernels and
related files. Everything appears fine now.

2016-02-08 Thread Jake McGregor
I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary when this appeared. It
almost appears as if this affects fresh installs, which mine is. I had
to reinstall due to kernel 4.4 not installing correctly. It also seems
interesting that I too have Spanish set as the main language, if that
even matters...

[Bug 1536790] [NEW] package brltty 5.3.1-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-01-21 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

This bug might be similar to #1533040, but I should note that this is
Ubuntu Mate running on a Raspberry Pi 2 (Arm v7), so I don't know if the
other bug is on the same CPU architecture or not. Feel free to mark it
as a duplicate if true. I was attempting to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04, and
it appears as if I ran into some dependency errors. I'll see if I can
get them sorted out with aptitude in the mean time. System is still
stable and boots up fine, but I would imagine this will affect new
installs until the dependency error is resolved.

Here is the error output;

sudo aptitude upgrade
The following partially installed packages will be configured:
  brltty brltty-x11
No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Setting up brltty (5.3.1-1ubuntu3) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
update-rc.d: warning: start and stop actions are no longer supported; falling

That is where it stops. So far not even aptitude can fix this...

I also experienced the same problem, after installing the proprietary
Nvidia drivers and following the instructions at
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/03/how-to-get-plymouth-working-with-

Right now, I'm undoing the graphical plymouth fix so I can boot by
entering my encrypted password, but all I get is a text-mode plymouth.
