[Bug 2056356] [NEW] Screen blank with only curson - Ubuntu 20.04.6 + Intel + X1 Carbon Gen11

2024-03-06 Thread Jim Campbell
Public bug reported:

It seems an intel video driver update is needed to get Ubuntu 20.04.6
working on the Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 11. On boot, only a blank screen
appears with a blinking cursor. Here are some details:

[Bug 1750873] Re: Long delay on boot without any feedback is disconcerting

2020-09-02 Thread Jim Campbell
Is this bug closed? When installing via 20.04.1 live server ISO, I see a
message that says:

initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed

I'm getting at least 8 instances of that TPM error before the installer
continues.

[Bug 1861230] Re: _sasl_plugin_load failed

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
In trying to recreate the issue this afternoon, it looks as though
installs based on all of the updated / most recent packages are
succeeding again (i.e., this may no longer be an issue).

In our dpkg logs, we noticed that an update came through today for libc-
bin (2.27-3ubuntu1), and wonder if this update may have been part of
what resolved the issue.

If that is not part of why this is working, then I will bury my head /
beg your forgiveness and try to figure out if there was some other
cause.

Please understand that this stopped working the same day that we got the
libsasl2 package updates, and that reverting the libsasl2 updates
allowed us to get our installs working, so that is why we filed a bug
against this package. Thanks again for your help.

[Bug 1861230] Re: _sasl_plugin_load failed

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
Before I continue - I want to say thanks for your response to this
report. I appreciate your effort and help.

As for the issue, when I say, "If I only install the latest packages" I
mean a fully up-to-date system at the time of install, including sssd
version 1.16.1-1ubuntu1.4. As part of my testing, I always used sssd
version 1.16.1-1ubuntu1.4 (even when I downgraded / upgraded the
referenced libsasl packages (libsasl2-2, libsasl2-modules-db,
libsasl2-modules, libsasl2-modules-gssapi-mit).

In terms of back-end, we use Windows AD.

[Bug 1861230] Re: _sasl_plugin_load failed

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
If I only install the latest packages (without the earlier versions of
these packages being installed previously) (i.e., if I do a clean
install of the most current packages when deploying a new host), it does
not work.

If I downgrade the packages to the prior versions, and then upgrade the
packages to their latest versions, it does work.

To me, this is repeatable.

[Bug 1861230] Re: _sasl_plugin_load failed

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
After allowing the packages to be upgraded to their newer versions, the
problem does _not_ persist. We see expected / desired results.

We only get a good outcome after the packages have been upgraded,
though. When the packages are installed as the initial versions ... that
is when we consistently see the issue.

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
I will try updating the packages to their current-released versions and
see if the problem persists. We ran into this issue across several 18.04
deployments yesterday, though. It prevented commands like `id -u
username` from working (at least that is how we initially noticed a
problem).

I'll revert my work-arounds, update the affected packages, and will
report-back shortly, though.

[Bug 1861230] Re: _sasl_plugin_load failed

2020-01-29 Thread Jim Campbell
When downgrading to the prior package, we do not see this problem.
We've taken the following steps as a work-around:

- apt-get -y --allow-downgrades install libsasl2-2=2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
- apt-get -y --allow-downgrades install
libsasl2-modules-db=2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
- apt-get -y --allow-downgrades install libsasl2-modules=2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
- apt-get -y --allow-downgrades install
libsasl2-modules-gssapi-mit=2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1

Then we've used apt-pinning to pin those versions:

Package: libsasl2-2
Pin: release o=Ubuntu version 2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
Pin-Priority: 999

Package: libsasl2-modules
Pin: release o=Ubuntu version 2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
Pin-Priority: 999

Package: libsasl2-modules-db
Pin: release o=Ubuntu version 2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
Pin-Priority: 999

Package: libsasl2-modules-gssapi-mit
Pin: release o=Ubuntu version 2.1.26.dfsg1-14build1
Pin-Priority: 999

And we've used a hold to (temporarily) keep them from being upgraded:

echo hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections

... We've done that for each of the four above packages. Going this
route does prevent the issue for now / keeps SSSD from failing.

Seeing this behavior, as well. Others reference vscode (in the comment

this is a snap-specific issue.

I do see reference to it as a snap-specific issue here:

[Bug 1794655] Re: Firefox: Modal dialogs with password fields instantly hide.

2018-11-09 Thread Jim Campbell
The patch to resolve this bug was just accepted to upstream gnome-shell
master: see https - gitlab.gnome dot org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/merge_requests/140 (For some reason launchpad is not letting me
submit a comment with a URL).

Might it be possible to back-port this patch to GNOME Shell 3.28 for
Bionic?

[Bug 1778554] [NEW] Please update SSSD to version 1.16.2

2018-06-25 Thread Jim Campbell
Public bug reported:

SSSD 1.16.2 was released on June 6th:
https://lists.fedorahosted.org/archives/list/sssd-
us...@lists.fedorahosted.org/thread/HFL7756NZEMOLTPE3KY3IPNFDGVDN3LE/

Requesting an update to the SSSD package for Ubuntu 18.04.

It does appear as though there are some feature improvements (i.e., not
just bug fixes), and it also includes a few new dependencies.

[Bug 1617535] Re: geoip.ubuntu.com does not utilize HTTPS

2018-05-03 Thread Jim Campbell
Might anyone be able to clarify what kinds of additional test cases (if
any) are needed? If so, I would appreciate it. I'm making an attempt to
be helpful in fixing this bug, but am a bit new to Canonical's internal
processes in terms of what they expect to test / resolve these kinds of
bugs. Any additional info / resources would be helpful. Thanks,

2018-04-18 Thread Jim Campbell
Adding test case here:

1) Install patches / patched package
2) Confirm that the 'geoip url' is set to a correct 'https' value, and that
this value is set as the default:
   `$ gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url` should display
`https://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup`
   `$ gsettings reset com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url && gsettings get
com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url` should continue to display
`https://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup` (this will confirm that the `https` value is
set as the default.
3) Confirm that the the correct location is being retrieved by the Ubuntu geoip
service:
   apt install geoclue-examples
   and then geoclue-test-gui
. . . should show correct location information.

If additional test cases / test case information is needed, please let
me know. Thanks.

[Bug 1754746] [NEW] Please update to 1.16.1 for bionic

2018-03-09 Thread Jim Campbell
Public bug reported:

SSSD 1.16.1 was tagged for release:

https://github.com/SSSD/sssd/releases/tag/sssd-1_16_1

. . . I'm hopeful that, although we're past the Debian sync freeze, that
it will be possible to get this point release into Ubuntu before the
final 18.04 initial release.

Thanks for your help.

It appears as though the servers may have been updated to also serve
this over https (previously, https didn't work at the Ubuntu geoip url),
but the default value for desktops is to use the http value, and the
defaults should be updated

Current values:
$ gsettings reset com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url
$ gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url

Should show:
$ gsettings reset com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url
$ gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url

[Bug 1735493] Re: Please update to 1.16.0 for bionic

2018-01-19 Thread Jim Campbell
I'm looking forward to some fixes that will arrive in SSSD 1.16.1, and
am hopeful that it will be released in time to be included in Bionic.

1) I know that the Debian sync deadline for 18.04 is March 1st. If
1.16.1 is released prior to that, is it likely that 1.16.1 could be
included in the initial 18.04 release?

2) If we can only get 1.16.0 into the initial 18.04 release, would the
1.16.1 point release qualify for an SRU? If so, I would be willing to
assist with that SRU process.

3) If SSSD 1.16.1 would be eligible for an SRU, approximately how long
would that process take before such an upgrade makes its way to Ubuntu?

Thanks very much for any info on this, and for your work in packaging
the software.

[Bug 475864] Re: Unable to kickstart with LVM partition scheme.

2017-11-01 Thread Jim Campbell
I'm still seeing this on 16.04.3. The 'expert_recipe' partitioning string is
being skipped / ignored. i.e., anything that looks like this:
---
preseed partman-auto/expert_recipe string \
  boot-root :: \
  500 500 500 ext4\
  $primary{ } \
  $bootable{ }\
  method{ format }\
  format{ } \
  use_filesystem{ } \
  filesystem{ ext4 } \
  mountpoint{ /boot } \
  . \
---

Doesn't seem to work. I was very careful, and tried a wide range of
options - working on it for several hours with repeated attempts - and
it always got skipped. As a result (for me), the automated partitioning
stopped at the point where it would clear partitions (as seen in
/var/syslog).

I used an approach similar to that provided by Mick Pollard (see above),
and it worked as desired.

As an additional note, I used this line to automatically skip a warning
about having no swap partition:

preseed --owner partman-basicfilesystems partman-
basicfilesystems/no_swap boolean false

[Bug 1617535] Re: geoip.ubuntu.com does not utilize HTTPS

2017-10-31 Thread Jim Campbell
Using the:

$  gsettings set com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url https://freegeoip.net/xml/

Appears to work well enough after initial testing.

1) $ gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime show-auto-detected-location
true
shows my correct location

2) apt install geoclue-examples
   and then geoclue-test-gui
. . . seems to show correct information, as well.

The freegeoip service appears to be well-maintained. Perhaps this is a
service that canonical / ubuntu could move to / could support, as well.

You can update to an alternate provider via:

gsettings set com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url https://freegeoip.net/xml/

and verify the setting via:

gsettings get com.ubuntu.geoip geoip-url

but I have not done extensive testing to see if this breaks anything.
Assistance on this would be appreciated.

You can either use the freegeoip service or use its code to host an
instance yourself. I do not mean to vouch for their service in any way.

I can bring this up at the GNOME docs hackfest. We may have the ability

Does that sound good? Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

you provide a little more context? Where in the help does this string
appear? The string number doesn't appear when we're editing the user

Connor, I think this is the expected behavior for the application at

Identifying the desktop session

2011-04-27 Thread Jim Campbell
For user help purposes, we're wondering what would be the best way of
identifying the user's user session. For example, under Unity, running:

echo $DESKTOP_SESSION

just produces the result, gnome. running lsb_release -a just gives info
about the general Ubuntu platform.

What would be the best way of identifying what session a user is running?
For starters, we'd need to know Xfce, Unity, Unity-2d, Gnome-Shell, etc.

 Try changing that to this:

That should make 'make pot' work, which is what happened

Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place, but I don't see the
gnome-doc-utils.make file in our top level source directory. I don't see it
in the gnome-user-docs from GNOME git, though, either.

I do see:

[Bug 769923] Re: Unity screenshots in new main page are inconsistent

2011-04-25 Thread Jim Campbell
Hi Dylan, thanks for the bug report. I see what you mean with regards to
the unity-shell.png and unity.png files. You are correct in that they
were taken from different desktops. We can get that corrected.

As for the unity-launcher-intro, unity-dash-intro, and unity-workspace-
intro files, I see a slight wandering of that line between launcher
and desktop, but I hadn't really intended to keep that line consistent.
At least, it wasn't a concern when I was initially was creating the
images. I was just trying to find a way to graphically represent the
different desktop components. I will see what I can do to get rid of the
wandering of that line, though.

We have a lot to fix with the docs right now, so the line wandering
issue will need to be a lower priority. It should be easier to address
the unity-shell.png and unity.png file issues, though.

situation is somewhat improved with recent updates to the ubuntu-docs
package, but more work remains to get the docs in order for 11.04.

I have marked this report as a duplicate of bug 753072.

[Bug 760656] Re: Launcher: Background lighting and border is displayed for Workspaces, Apps, Files, Trash (should be turned off)

2011-04-18 Thread Jim Campbell
Martin, thanks for considering the docs.

As for screenshots, we still need to re-take a few of them, so I have no
objection to making the icon changes at this time.

If we did have a screenshot with current icons, and only the shading was
changing, I think it would be ok to make this change anyway. As you say,
a slight shading change wouldn't be that noticeable in the
documentation.

Re: Installing ubuntu natty without eyes

2011-04-14 Thread Jim Campbell
Hello Mattias,

Thank you for installing Ubuntu. I'm sorry that you had difficulty with
Unity, or that you did not like it.

You can use the Gnome 2-style interface (the old, as you refer to it).

To use the previous-style interface, you will need to select the Ubuntu
Classic interface when you are logging in to Ubuntu. When the login screen
comes up, select your user name, and then change the session from Ubuntu
to Ubuntu Classic.

The session chooser is in the bottom panel on the login screen. Remember
that the session chooser will only appear after you have selected your
username.

After you have changed the session, then enter your password, and press
Enter.

If this doesn't help you, please let us know.

Thanks very much!

Jim

Re: [Bug 753072] Re: yelp docs not about ubuntu natty

2011-04-13 Thread Jim Campbell

It raises the question: is content being driven by the toolchain (Gnome
3 Yelp uses Mallard, whereas Maverick Ubuntu Help Center uses docbook)?

I agree with Matthew here. We chose this toolchain (Mallard + Yelp) because
it provided a better user experience (at least in the on-disk context) than
DocBook, and it is easier to write and extend than DocBook.

Besides, the people who were working on Gnome docs are pretty much the same
people who are working on Ubuntu docs. Phil Bull, myself, Tiffany
Antopolski, Natalia Ruz . . . we all helped shape Gnome 3 help and we all
use Ubuntu. (Or at least we use Ubuntu as our primary desktops...).

I'm entirely open to using different tools in the sense that I would be
willing to write for content that goes on the desktop or web, but I'm not a
web developer, and don't have the time and inclination to develop a doc CMS
and get it integrated into the Canonical infrastructure. If Canonical has a
need for a more web-based help system, I think it would be a good area for
them to invest more resources.

(Ubuntu Docs in Maverick was well translated into many languages, and
translation of Gnome 3 topics + new Ubuntu Topics is at best uncertain.)

Another approach would be to ask: What do Ubuntu Natty users need for
content (on-disk/online)? Then let content development flow from that (with
due consideration of delivery formats and localization).

I agree that the even the help we are working on now may need to be
re-architected a bit. The online portion remains a bit of an open question.
Again, I'm open to other (online) approaches.

A related question is: how important is it that content be independent
 from the display application (yelp)?

Ryan Lortie and Shaun McCance talked about some additional ideas at the doc
hackfest in Toronto, even talking about getting some help-specific features
into GTK itself. Shaun would be the person to talk to about that stuff.

Thanks for the questions, Kyle.

Late-cycle UI changes and Documentation

2011-04-11 Thread Jim Campbell
Hi All,

I'm working on system docs for 11.04, and am noticing some late UI changes.
For example, with today's updates, I noticed that you can display the
Launcher just by pressing your mouse against the far left side of the
screen. Previously, I had to move my mouse the top corner. Other UI changes
might not be as easy for me to notice, though.

Is it feasible for the docs team to be notified of such changes? With GNOME,
the docs team is notified of all post-ui-freeze UI changes (actually, two
release managers and someone from the docs team needs to sign-off on the
changes after a certain point). It makes it much easier to keep track of
what is changing, and what needs to be updated in the docs.

Thanks for your consideration,

Jim

PS. Yes, I know the docs are in a not-so-great state for Natty, but we are
working on them, and I think people will be pleasantly surprised at how
they've improved once they are done. Check out: bzr branch
lp:~ubuntu-core-doc/gnome-user-docs/natty-unity
Then do yelp gnome-help/C/ (without the quotes) from within that branch to
see the current state.

[Bug 426215] Re: [UIF exception] apt:package-name isn't handled by the Store when appropriate

2011-04-10 Thread Jim Campbell
This works fine from within yelp in natty (apt urls open the Software
Center, presenting the user with information about the appropriate
application), but within firefox, the apt:[app name] feature doesn't
seem to work correctly.

Per the attached screenshot, it just opens up a window asking which
application should open the URI. If I select Choose, it gives me a
file-selector window. This assumes that I'll know where to go to have
this open in the Software Center.

[Bug 753072] Re: yelp docs not about ubuntu natty

2011-04-07 Thread Jim Campbell
I'm going through the Gnome docs, splitting out the docs into a few categories
- Docs that are relevant only to Gnome (the shell overview / introduction
topics)
- Docs that can be used as-is, or with minimal porting to Ubuntu
- Docs that are relevant, but would need moderate refactoring for Ubuntu

There are also some topics that are relevant only to Ubuntu (app
indicators, unity-specific features, etc.)

I have a good amount of time to work on this (really, I do), but we only
have about a week and a half / two weeks to get this stuff in.

Re: [Bug 690784] Re: Suspend and Hibernate options are not available

2010-12-22 Thread Jim Campbell
Well, they come from a very hacky ubuntu patch which was accepted
upstream after some timeā€¦ Many users were unhappy with them because on
suspend/hibernate they don't lock the screen (for some of them it was
 also a security issue).

At some time, upstream proposed to remove the current code, and instead
call some functions from the power manager to do that (this would've
ensured one single area of configuration and a common behavior), but I
don't think it was achieved for 4.8.

Anyway, these buttons are only hidden, so I can put them back if you
want, e.g. if someone tested them and can confirm that the screen is
 locked when suspending/hibernating.

Thanks, Lionel. I tried using the menu buttons to go into suspend and
hibertnate modes, and (after I turned the computer back on) the screen was
not locked in either case. I also tried using the settings of the power
manager to control things, and the same issue was present.

This is all on Xfce 4.6, though. I haven't tried the 4.8 setup yet.

If we don't enable those buttons by default, we can at least document what
to do, and the risks (security) involved in doing so. Thanks,

Jim

It probably should be pointing at the Synaptic Package Manger in yelp

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

This is a situation that we face pretty frequently - how to link to
documentation that is in yelp? I've previously linked out to the html pages
for that help (these would be the pages on the gnome website.) This would
take the user out of the Xubuntu user help, though.

Thoughts?

I'm not so sure that hiding these options from the user is the best way to
go, though. Is there a reason for why the suspend / hibernate buttons were
hidden for 10.10? I think most users would look for those buttons, and
wouldn't think to just configure the options via the power manager.

Dano, if the option isn't re-enabled, we should document the various options
to either re-enable the suspend and hibernate buttons (they can click a few
buttons to do that), or to use the power-manager to set the desired
behaviors.
