[Bug 1970898] Re: unable to use nfs client to mount nfs in Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-01 Thread John Steele Scott
I was also unable to use NFS mounts since upgrading my client to 22.04.
My server is a QNAP running version 5.0.0.1986.

Enabling NFSv4 on the server did not solve the issue.

Adding vers=3 as a mount option on the client lets NFS mounts work again
for me.

[Bug 605043] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on Dell Lattitude E6410: Failed to read MMC card

2010-12-01 Thread John Steele Scott
Hmm, it works across reboots for me, without adding anything to
/etc/rc.local. I am back on Ubuntu 10.04 though.

One thought is that perhaps you need to update your initramfs to make
your config change apply to the module which is loaded during boot. See
if running sudo update-initramfs -u makes it apply across reboots
without having to reload the module after boot.

[Bug 12431] Re: openjade 1.4devel1-13 rejects dbttlpg.dsl flow object not accepted by port; only display flow objects accepted

2010-09-14 Thread John Steele Scott
I don't know if it still occurs in Lucid, this bug report was from a
past life. I don't need to care about this anymore.

The bug description includes a trivially simple method to reproduce. If
you wanted to actually help Ubuntu improve (rather than just karma
whore) you could attempt to reproduce it yourself.

[Bug 605043] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on Dell Lattitude E6410: Failed to read MMC card

2010-08-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Disabling ADMA gets around this issue.

I've attached a modprobe configuration file which does this. After
creating this file into /etc/modprobe.d and reloading the sdhci kernel
modules (rmmod sdhci_pci and sdhci, then modprobe sdhci_pci), I can use
the card reader on my E6510.

[Bug 591033] Re: failure to resume after suspending for the second time (Dell Latitude E6510)

2010-06-10 Thread John Steele Scott
Unfortunately I have to take back what I said about this being fixed in
2.6.35-rc1. It still fails to resume from sleep sometimes. Where 2.6.32
would reboot on resume, 26.35-rc1 just hangs instead. It does work
sometimes, but not always.

2010-06-09 Thread John Steele Scott
Sebastian, I suggest opening a separate bug, your issue sounds quite
different to mine. My bug is just about suspend, and seems to be already
fixed in kernel 2.6.35-rc1. If you think your bug is a kernel bug, you
can run ubuntu-bug linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic, which will run a
program to upload any relevant information when you report your bug.

[Bug 591033] Re: failure to resume after suspending for the second time (Dell Latitude E6510)

2010-06-08 Thread John Steele Scott
In my original report I said that short suspend periods were okay, but
longer periods could not be resumed from. I think what is actually the
case is that the first resume works okay, but the second time you try to
resume, the machine fails to resume (and then reboots). The duration of
time for which the machine is suspended does not actually seem to be
part of the issue.

Anyway, the good news is that this appears to be fixed in
2.6.35-020635rc1-generic. It does not appear to be fixed in
2.6.34-020634 (couldn't even resume once), or 2.6.33-02063305.

[Bug 591033] [NEW] failure to resume after suspending overnight (Dell Latitude E6510)

2010-06-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

I suspend this laptop by closing the lid. If it is only suspended for a
short period (e.g. suspend when I leave the office, go home, have
dinner, then resume), it resumes with no problem.

If it is suspended for a long period (e.g. overnight), it fails to
resume. When I open the lid, nothing appears to happen for some time
(maybe 30 seconds), then the system starts as if it has been rebooted
(e.g. the Dell logo appears, grub, etc).

[Bug 379293] [NEW] bash completion for gdb does not complete paths properly

2009-05-21 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash-completion

jsc...@jscott-laptop:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

jsc...@jscott-laptop:~$ apt-cache policy bash-completion
bash-completion:
  Installed: 20080705ubuntu3
  Candidate: 20080705ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 20080705ubuntu3 0
500 http://mirror.internode.on.net jaunty/main Packages
500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Suppose we want to run /bin/true under gdb. I type in gdb /bi and
press TAB. This gets completed to gdb /bin . The problem is that a
space has been added after the 'n', so I have to press backspace to add
more to the path.

I would have expected that after typing gdb /bi and pressing TAB, I
would end up with gdb /bin/, with the cursor directly after the '/'.

[Bug 378172] [NEW] git-core installs emacs vc-git mode which overrides the version from emacs22.

2009-05-18 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: git-core

After upgrading to Jaunty, I found that one of my elisp functions had
broken. It took a bit of digging to work out that this happened because
git-core installs its own version of vc-git to

git-core: /usr/share/doc/git-core/contrib/emacs/vc-git.el

This conflicts with (actually seems to take precence over) the version
which comes with emacs22:

emacs22-el: /usr/share/emacs/22.2/lisp/vc-git.el.gz

The version in git-core should either be split off into a separate
package (e.g. git-core-el), or not registered with emacs at all (i.e.
dh_installemacsen should not be called).

My workaround is to remove git-core and just use git from the git
website, not via Ubuntu packages.

[Bug 377177] [NEW] Australian English dictionary does not register with Emacs.

2009-05-15 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

I am the (sponsered) maintainer of the openoffice.org-en-au package in
Debian. I have updated the package for the myspell-en-au dictionary so
that it installs the files necessary to integrate with the Debian Emacs
ispell/flyspell mode according to Debian dictionary policy. I tried to
get this directly into Debian but my package sponsor has not replied to
the email I sent him about this a few weeks ago. I would like to see
this in Ubuntu (since I actually use Ubuntu, not Debian), so perhaps a
MOTU could update this in Ubuntu directly?

I have attached a diff.gz, with the following changes:

openoffice.org-en-au (2.1-4) unstable; urgency=low
.
  * Drop dictionary.lst fragments required for OpenOffice.org 3.
  * Install an info file for registering the dictionary with Emacs.
  * Abort on error in the thesaurus postrm script.
  * Bumped Standards-Version to 3.8.1, no changes needed.
  * Bumped debhelper compatibility version to 5.

[Bug 323496] Re: An unfriendly error message is shown when failing to open a DVD.

2009-04-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Sebastien, I cannot reproduce this anymore, so I'll mark it as fixed. This is
with
gvfs 1.2.1-0ubuntu1.

One oddity is that the volume name of the DVD drive in nautilus gets set
to the volume label of the first DVD I insert, and does not change when
I eject the DVD or insert a different DVD, but that's another issue (not
this bug).

[Bug 326769] Re: Emulation of middle button and scroll wheel is broken.

2009-03-07 Thread John Steele Scott
It seems that this line:

merge key=input.x11_options.ButtonMapping type=string1 8 3 2
9/merge

in my HAL policy file was the cause of the problem. Scrolling up was
emulating a click of button 4, which was getting re-mapped to button 2,
which caused a paste event rather then a scroll event. I have removed
that line from my policy file and it works fine now.

Marking invalid.

[Bug 323496] Re: An unfriendly error message is shown when failing to open a DVD.

2009-02-07 Thread John Steele Scott
This is a clean install of Jaunty.

Sorry about the versions, I got them from the wrong place. Looking at my
Debian changelogs, the versions currently installed are:

nautilus (1:2.25.4-0ubuntu1) jaunty
gvfs (1.1.5-0ubuntu1) jaunty

It happens every time on the two video DVDs I've tried. Both DVDs are
playable with mplayer dvd://0.

Restarting does not make a difference.

[Bug 326769] [NEW] Emulation of middle button and scroll wheel is broken.

2009-02-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

I use a Logitech Marble Mouse trackball, and have a hal policy file
setup with the following rules:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
deviceinfo version=0.2
match key=info.product string=Logitech USB Trackball
merge key=input.x11_options.ButtonMapping type=string1 8 3 2 9/merge
merge key=input.x11_options.EmulateWheel type=stringtrue/merge
merge key=input.x11_options.EmulateWheelButton type=string8/merge
merge key=input.x11_options.ZAxisMapping type=string4 5/merge
merge key=input.x11_options.Emulate3Buttons type=stringtrue/merge
/match
/deviceinfo

This allows me to emulate a middle mouse button by clicking the two
large left and right buttons simultaneously, and also lets me emulate a
scroll wheel by clicking the small left button while scrolling the
trackball.

Somewhere between xorg-server 2:1.5.99.901-1ubuntu1 and
2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu3, this broke.

xinput shows that the evdev propeties are being set correctly (at least,
this output is the same with both versions of xorg-server:

tooj...@yoshi:~$ xinput --list-props Logitech USB Trackball
Device 'Logitech USB Trackball':

Evdev Wheel Emulation Inertia (233):10
Evdev Wheel Emulation Timeout (234):200
Evdev Wheel Emulation Button (235): 8

Downgrading to xorg-server 2:1.5.99.901-1ubuntu1 fixes this issue for
me.

[Bug 323496] [NEW] An unfriendly error message is shown when failing to open a DVD.

2009-01-31 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Current jaunty:
gvfs 1.0.2-0ubuntu1
nautilus 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1

To reproduce:
Insert a DVD into the DVD drive.
From the menu at the top of the desktop screen, select Places-CD-RW/DVD±RW
Drive.

The following error dialog is shown:

Unable to scan CD-RW/DVD±RW Drive for media changes
Cannot invoke CheckForMedia on HAL: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied:
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type=method_call, sender=:1.24

error name=(unset) requested_reply=0 destination=org.freedesktop.Hal (uid=0
pid=3432 comm=/usr/sbin/hald ))

I tried a different disk, and it worked okay. So possibly the problem
here is with the disk (maybe because it is a video DVD, not a data DVD).
But the error message is not very friendly.

[Bug 164611] Re: [dapper] vmware-player-kernel-2.6.15-2.6.15.10-13 breaks vmware-player

Snam, going back to the older vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.15-29
(2.6.15.11-12) would work, but that's disappeared from the archives
already so unless you have an old copy somewhere, it's not possible.

What I did was remove vmware-player and install it from a tarball
provided by VMware. I installed version 1.05 even though version 2.x is
available, maybe 2.x would work, but I needed to get vmware-player back
ASAP for work so I didn't have time to experiment.

sigh . . . sad when the LTS release breaks like this . . . I
specifically stick with dapper on my work PC to avoid wasting time
fixing stuff.

[Bug 155735] gamma setting is lost after suspend/resume

2007-10-22 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I run a script which uses the new xrandr features to setup my video
outputs depending on whether or not my iBook (with a Radeon 9200) has an
external monitor connected. As part of this process, the script will run
xgamma -gamma 0.65 to make the picture look better on my external
display.

On resume from sleep, it seems that the output is reverted to a gamma of
1.0. If I run xgamma with no arguments, it reports that the gamma is
0.65, as it should be, but the picture tells a different story. I have
to run xgamma -gamma 0.65 again for the display to look correct again.

I supose that X still thinks the gamma is 0.65, but the radeon driver
has not restored this value after resume.

[Bug 36956] Re: Brightness reset to max when starting/restarting Xorg or waking from sleep

2007-10-22 Thread John Steele Scott
Nope, this bug still exists in gutsy.

Timo, do you know what part of X could be causing this? I'm just not
sure that the radeon driver is the best package to own this bug. On
these iBook/Powerbook systems, the backlight is controlled via the PMU.

This bug might be better resolved if the issue with resume was fixed in
hal (which already has code to control the backlight), and the issue
with the screensaver was fixed in gnome-screensaver or gnome-power-
manager (whichever of these has ultimate responsibility for blanking the
screen).

[Bug 144305] Re: [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes

2007-10-14 Thread John Steele Scott
Sleep doesn't work on my iBook G4 either. It used to work in Feisty.

One strange thing I've noted is that when the machine goes to sleep,
after the LED starts breathing (fading in and out to show the machine
is asleep), the LCD backlight turns on.

Ben, I haven't been able to get your workaround to work for me yet, but
I'll keep fiddling with it a bit more. Problem is there's never really a
convenient time to do the kind of stuff which requires constantly
crashing/rebooting the computer. :(

I think the gnome-power-manager is handling the sleep via hal, which
should mean that /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu is invoked to use the
PMU ioctl to cause sleep. If that's the case, should the APM emulation
module still be required? It is loaded on my iBook, but my install is
pretty crufty because I've been through many dist-upgrades over the last
few years.

[Bug 144305] Re: [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes

2007-10-14 Thread John Steele Scott
Okay, I'm sure your workaround is the way to go, it's just the
implementation which doesn't seem to be the same between my computer and
yours.

Notes:

If I manually switch to vt1 and sleep using /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-
power-pmu sleep, it sleeps and resumes fine.

Also, if I sleep from X by running pbbcmd sleep, it runs
/etc/power/suspend.d/console-switch-out and sleeps and resumes okay, but
for some reason /etc/power/resume.d/console-switch-in is not being run
and so after wakeup I have to switch back to vt7 by hand.

But if I try and sleep just by closing the lid, I get the backlight
switching on after it goes to sleep, and the machine dies on resume.

Am I correct in thinking that the /etc/power scripts are called from
userspace by pbbuttonsd or pmud? So if the PMU ioctl is being called by
some other process, those scripts will not necessarily be run?

I think it's gnome-power-manager which is handling the lid-close event,
and not running the scripts. So I just need to find out where to hook
into there to do the vt switch. I suspect it's happening in
/usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux; if that's the
case it should be a piece of cake to fix.

[Bug 144305] Re: [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes

2007-10-14 Thread John Steele Scott
This patch mostly fixes it for me . . . I can now confidently close the
lid to suspend, and open it without a crash.

The only issue is that the call to chvt after resume does not always
work, so sometimes I need to switch vts manually. But it sure beats
having the machine lock-up.

[Bug 150092] xrandr and radeon drives BenQ FP231W incorrectly

2007-10-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to gutsy today. I have a BenQ FP231W connected to my
laptop's Radeon 9200. I try to turn off the laptop panel and use only
the FP231W:

xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA-0 --auto

This does switch off the laptop panel and enable the external display,
but the picture on the external display is offset about 5cm to the
right, and so is missing 5cm off the right hand side of the monitor.
Looking in the FP231W OSD menu, it shows that the monitor thinks it is
being run at 1600x1200, even though the computer thinks it is running at
1920x1200.

If I tell xrandr to run at 1600x1200 I get the reverse effect: the
computer is acting as though the display is 1600x1200, but the display
thinks it is running at 1920x1200, and so the image is stretched
horizontally.

I have found that I can work around this by injecting the correct
modeline/resolution combination into xrandr like so:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --newmode native 160.9 1920 1980 2040 2160 1200
1201 1204 1242
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --addmode VGA-0 native
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA-0 --mode native

The strange thing is that the modeline parameters I inject are the same
ones which xrandr already seems to have detected. It looks as if the
default resolution and timing params are getting scrambled somehow in
xrandr or the radeon driver.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --verbose -q

[Bug 119295] Re: OpenSSH should support VIA PadLock

[Bug 119295] Re: OpenSSH should support VIA PadLock

2007-07-07 Thread John Steele Scott
The original implementation of --with-ssl-engine doesn't seem to me to
do anything at all, because it relies on an ugly re'#define which is not
included anywhere it's needed. Even with that included in the
appropriate spots, the padlock engine is still not being used.

I've attached a works for me kind of patch. It adds the necessary
includes so that --with-ssl-engine actually does something, and it also
explicitly sets the padlock engine as the preferred cipher provider. Now
I can get throughput of 13.6MB/s when performing the above scp test.

Btw, the -w option seems to work for me.

I use it with slimserver to convert m4a to flac for streaming to a
sqeezebox like so. I have the following line in my slimserver config to
get flac on stdout.

[faad] -w -d -s 44100 -f2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --fast --endian=little
--channels=2 --bps=16 --sample-rate=44100 --sign=signed -

This mostly works for me on my PPC box. The problem I am having with
this is that faad does not correctly shutdown when the pipe closes. That
sounds like a different issue to corrupted output.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

On an up to date dapper system, I run Shared Folders from the
Administration menu. When I click the Help button, instead of
getting help, I get the following message:

2006-06-28 Thread John Steele Scott
Thanks for your comment Jonathan. It has helped me with the permissions
issue.

To stop rhythmbox from automatically popping up, go to
System-Preferences-Removable Drives and Media, select the multimedia
tab, and clear the box that says Play music files when connected.

[Bug 51167] totem plugins do not advertise all mimetypes to firefox

2006-06-27 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I was trying to watch video from http://www.abc.net.au/vod in WMV
format. However, I always get Click here to download the appropriate
plugin message.

Clicking through reveals that the plugin mimetype is video/x-ms-asf.

Looking at about:plugins shows that Totem Mozilla Plugin can handle
video/x-ms-asf-plugin, but not video/x-ms-asf.

Looking in the totem source at totem-mozilla-plugin.cpp:648 shows that
the authors of totem have listed video/x-ms-asf as an alias for video/x
-ms-asf-plugin. Unfortunately for some reason this is not getting
through to firefox.
