[Bug 1426840] Re: connecting to vpn fails with could not find source connection

2016-05-14 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I've got the same issue on Xenial. On a system where NM probably does
manage the uplink connection, this problem does not occur.

[Bug 1579533] Re: Chromium process doesn't close when closing the last window

2016-05-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems this issue is related to SCIM which is started by Chromium
(when it's not started yet?). Removing all the SCIM related packages
solved the issue.

I suspect this bug is still present for people that need to use SCIM.

[Bug 1579534] [NEW] Chromium process doesn't close when closing the last window

2016-05-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

This is how the problem shows:
1. I start up Chromium
2. I close its window
3. I start it again, Chromium complains it can't open its profile

When I run Chromium from a terminal, I see that it doesn't close after I
close its window. I have to do an explicit ctrl+c in the terminal (or
kill the processes) before I can start Chromium again without having a
'profile in use' warning.

There are *no* extensions installed. The check box to stay active if any
background app would be enabled is turned *off* as well.

Terminal output:
$ chromium-browser
Using PPAPI flash.
Loading socket Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading x11 FrontEnd module ...
Failed to load x11 FrontEnd module.

When reporting this bug with ubuntu-bug, it suggested that
/etc/chromium-browser/default had been changed. I never changed this file
myself. When confirming that it could be attached to this bug report,
ubuntu-bug crashed. Only choosing to not add this file, allowed me to report

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
More information, it's possible to load the module with these instructions:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/705878/can-i-fix-my-corrupted-lubuntu-splash-screen-having-disabled-the-graphical-term

Looking at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf there is this comment:
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.

So it seems that the reason this module does not load automatically is
intentional.

Now that the X.org driver for this chip has been removed and it relies
completely on the framebuffer module, maybe it would make sense to look
into slightly better support for the framebuffer modules?

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this problem on Ubuntu 15.10. Note that this version does
not contain the xserver-xorg-video-sis anymore, but it does contain the
sisfb module.

Now the vesafb driver is loaded now, but it does not seem to be a
module. I tried to use the instructions from this thread to load sisfb
instead plus updating the initramfs files, but it didn't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1423381

I think that the in-kernel vesafb prevents sisfb from loading or it's
not properly added to the initramfs.

Should I reopen this bug or create a new one?

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-08-16 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Also solved the problem here!

Using 'aplay -l' seems like a rather strange hack to detect a software
modem. I think either the Python ALSA bindings or /proc/asound/cards for
that instead only. Right now 'aplay -l' apparently is only called when
no modem is found through /proc/asound/cards as a fallback.

Martin Pitt, is there any specific reason for this fallback behavior?
Should it be reimplemented using Python's ALSA bindings or maybe could
be gotten rid off completely?

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-06-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Yes, it only seems to happen with KDE. I also found that Pulseaudio
installs one extra start-up script for KDE only in /etc/xdg/autostart.
The man pages of these scripts both mention they will use an already
running Pulseaudio.

I think the proper solution is either:
- run Pulseaudio *once* and never again (when logging in)
- fix Pulseaudio's self-detection so that it works when the first instance is
still initializing

As for running Pulseaudio as a specific user, I wonder what would happen
when multiple users are logging onto a system at the same time. Would
this not create a similar conflict with each user's Pulseaudio trying to
use the ALSA devices at the same time?

instance is already loading before the 1st has a chance to write its pid
file?

Does it make sense that Pulseaudio's respawn option should be turned on,
while it is also explicitly loaded by the log-on scripts? I would say
either it either uses or respawn or it's loaded already when logging in.

[Bug 1325282] Re: USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-06-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems that on Kubuntu Trusty, by default two pulseaudios are running:
$ ps aux|grep pulse
julius3414 1.1 0.1 588164 7056 ?Sl 19:38 0:56
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
julius3969 0.0 0.1 502228 5520 ?Sl 19:41 0:00
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

The log-in process start pulseaudio 2 times and the presence detection
appears to be broken.

[Bug 1325282] Re: USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-06-12 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I just tried plugging in my second USB device and only the playback
device was recognized, the microphone was not. Here is the output:

$ fuser -v /dev/snd/*
 GEBRUIKER PID SOORT PROGRAMMA
/dev/snd/controlC0: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC2: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D3p: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0c: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0p: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio

The new device is on /dev/snd/pcmC2* so it doesn't seem to be used by something
else. I'm a bit surprised there are two pulseaudios with different PIDs active
though. Could that be a problem?
I'm in a phone call (pcmC1) and playing music over HDMI (pcmC0D3), so it's
correct it's using those devices. When I do a reboot, it seems the device is
always recognized properly. It's just hot-plugging which doesn't tend to work
correctly.

[Bug 1325282] [NEW] USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-05-31 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When I connect an audio device using USB, I can only use it to play back
stereo sound. Anything else is not detected. I tried it with two
different devices and they both give me the same result. Neither in KDE
nor in Google Hangouts, I can use my microphone. It does not show up as
a selectable input device anywhere.

ALSA does seem to correctly detect that these USB devices have a
microphone.

The microphone of my internal audio does work.

[Bug 756317] Re: Captive portals may corrupt apt translation indices

2014-03-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
With the current situation, you do not even have to actively use APT behind
such a portal for the bug to be triggered.
When my main internet connection was working with such a portal, APT just
stopped working seemingly randomly because there apparently is some kind of
auto fetch daemon running by default on Ubuntu. I had to delete the contents of
that directory very regularly, because APT often wasn't working when I needed
it. Of course I would only use APT myself once I verified that my connection
was working properly.

And I'm sad to say it, but it seems such portals are very popular in
this part of the world :(

If this is not going to be fixed for Trusty, at least add a note to the
release notes which explains how to disable this automatic fetching of
package lists. That would significantly reduce the problem for many
people.

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux

2013-12-13 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
With Ubuntu 13.10 it has become a mess. I tried to install it 4 times on
my notebook now. It would go through the complete installation process
and only at the end suddenly the kernel failed to install. I thought I
may have connectivity problems at first. Only after manually doing a
dpkg -i on the kernel deb through a root shell, I saw the error message
about non-PAE.

I hope at least some warning can be added about this, because it's
stupid to go through the whole process and discover at the end it's not
going to work.

I suppose it was partially a bot above me. Even looking at the KDE bug
for a single second shows that this problem is actually specific to the

and that the KDE developers are not looking for a fix.

There are quite a few Ubuntu-specific patches in Ubuntu's KDE 4

[Bug 595661] Re: please support h264 hardware acceleration on certain intel video cards

2012-08-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
The included Intel driver in Precise still misses support for H.264 and the G45
chips. To solve this issue quickly, one can use these commands:
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/vaapi/intel-driver intel-driver
cd intel-driver/
apt-cache show libva1|grep Version
git checkout 1.0.15 (replace 1.0.15 with the version from above when it differs)
git pull origin g45-h264
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

I haven't tested with playing videos yet, but this makes vainfo show
three extra H264 profiles.

[Bug 943559] Re: Filezilla cannot establish FTPES connections due to GnuTLS issues

2012-08-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
That doesn't make any sense:
- The error message is incorrect, it should state then it's due to the weak
cipher problem, not just fail.
- Removing support for weak ciphers does not make things any more secure as
long as completely insecure connections are also possible. This just limits
compatibility, which is a problem.
- Other ftps client work fine, like lftp.

[Bug 990635] Re: Sans serif cyrrilic font in kubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 is bad

2012-07-06 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I looked at /etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum.conf in Debian Wheezy,
which seems to have the same lines, but it does not have this problem.

[Bug 1017485] [NEW] Composing a ć in GTK applications results in a ç with the default input method

2012-06-25 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When I use a GTK applcation such as Chromium or Firefox and I type the
following keys:
compose ' c

A ç character is printed.

When I change the input method to X Input method or use a non-GTK
application, I get a proper ć.

The key sequence compose , c is already reserved for typing a ç, so a
ç can always be typed. This problem makes it completely impossible to
compose a ć in GTK applications however, without switching the input
method manually every time.

It seems this is a bug in the default input method used for GTK
applications. In for example Qt4 applications, everything works
correctly.

[Bug 1010208] Re: Firefox 13.0 on Lucid hangs very often, sometimes a JavaScript hang dialog is displayed

2012-06-15 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I responded too fast, it seems it's a Flash library in LD_PRELOAD causing the
problems.
The standard environment is set up like this:
LD_PRELOAD=/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so:/usr/lib/libnspr4.so

With:
LD_PRELOAD=/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so firefox

Works without problems. I'm not sure why this library is in LD_PRELOAD.
But this seems to be related to the hang.

[Bug 1010208] [NEW] Firefox 13.0 on Lucid hangs very often, sometimes a JavaScript hang dialog is displayed

2012-06-07 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

after maybe a minute of using it. Opening 3 tabs already seems to
trigger a hang.

The problem occurs even when running in safe-mode. The Flash plug-in is

[Bug 979035] Re: Many glitches after a while with the Intel driver

2012-05-29 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Hi Bryce, the glitches are the typical ones when the driver runs into
memory allocation issues. Black widgets, disappearing windows, etc. I
haven't been able to reproduce the problem anymore. It seems that one
time it occurred after a few days with some heavy use of the GPU with
OpenGL games and videos.

You should look at the attached XorgLogOld.txt which includes the lines
which show the memory allocation issue.

[Bug 1001209] [NEW] When connected to a network with a catch-all HTTP filter, apt-get update corrupts the package lists

2012-05-18 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

I need to log on through a webpage before I can access the internet on some
networks.
Before that all HTTP requests are forwarded to a log-on page.

When apt-get update is being run in the background before this log-on
has happened, it will corrupt the package lists with this log-on page. I
need to manually remove multiple files in /var/lib/apt/lists/ then
before I can rerun apt-get update.

[Bug 990761] Re: acroread 9.5.1 is not installable on Ubuntu Precise amd64 system

2012-05-12 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
This bug is caused by multiple issues.

The AMD64 deb that is available depends on ia32-libs, but this
transitional package is not installable at all on Ubuntu Precise. It
depends on 32-bit libraries that still conflict with 64-bit libraries.

MultiArch support is broken regarding architecture independent packages.
There is no such thing as acroread-common:i386 because acroread-common
is an architecture independent all package and the exact same package
can be used with both the 64-bit and 32-bit version. MultiArch somehow
adds :i386 everywhere, but this is nonsense in this case. It should not
do that with all packages and just use the plain version.

Of course, it's also silly that acroread can't be compiled for AMD64.

[Bug 945461] Re: The default font used for Qt4 is broken (regarding cyrillic text)

2012-04-30 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I'm about to leave here, but I will make some screenshots later today.

I would not say that Cyrillic needs more attention in the sense that on
Lucid everything worked perfectly fine. I will make a shot in Lucid
(including those characters) and a shot in Precise and you will see
everything looking identical except for the Cyrillic fonts that suddenly
became out of place. It should not be hard to see it because the
Cyrillic and Latin alphabets have many identical characters. For example
А and A should look identical. Same with О and O. Currently they do not
in Qt4 applications in Precise, in Lucid they did.

I'm not a native reader, but I am quite familiar with Russian and
Ukrainian.

Надеюсь эта неполадка вскоре будет устранена :)

[Bug 945461] Re: The default font used for Qt4 is broken (regarding cyrillic text)

2012-04-30 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
This screenshot shows the same file displayed both in Lucid and in
Precise.

The output in Lucid looks perfect, in Precise it does not work properly.
The lines that should look pretty much identical and which do look
identical in Lucid, look different in Precise. There are problem with
the font rendering and the spacing.

[Bug 985020] Re: The package is broken, pcscd doesn't work with my reader anymore

2012-04-24 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I just tried it again and now everything worked. I'm not sure if it was
because of an update or because of something else. If I come across this
problem again, I will immediately try to make a log according to the
instructions linked.

Thank you very much for the quick reply! It is really appreciated.

[Bug 951553] [NEW] Labels disappear in the KDE taskmanager when many windows are open

2012-03-10 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When opening many windows, at some point the text labels of *all* the
taskbar items disappear. Only the icon is still displayed in the center
with most of the button left completely empty. This makes it impossible
to select the correct window when a single application has multiple
windows open.

This worked correctly at least in KDE 3.5.

[Bug 947814] [NEW] VLC 2.0 cannot send the audio over HDMI with SPDIF anymore (worked in 1.1)

2012-03-06 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

In the previous version of VLC, I could enable the Use SPDIF switch and
VLC would send the audio directly over the HDMI output. This would allow
the amplifier to do the decoding. In version 2.0 using this switch does
not work and nothing is sent over to the amplifier. I'm using Ubuntu
Precise.

I expect this to work just like it did in version 1.1. Recently version
2.0 was included in Ubuntu Precise which is when the problems started
for me.

[Bug 945461] [NEW] The default font used for Qt4 is broken (regarding cyrillic text)

2012-03-03 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

Since I switched from Ubuntu Lucid to Ubuntu Precise, the fonts in all
my Qt4 applications look significantly worse. Especially cyrillic
characters are not displayed properly. In Ubuntu Lucid everything works
fine.

Cyrillic letters look significantly different, less pronounced than Latin
letters.
Some characters are not included and displayed with a square and a cross (the
Ukrainian і (capital І) is an example of this).
Konsole in KDE4 is completely unusable when cyrillic characters are displayed.

Expected behavour: the fonts should look good. Cyrillic characters
should not look out of place among Latin characters. In Ubuntu Lucid
everything looks fine. I would suggest reverting the set of default
fonts to the set from Lucid if the issues with the current fonts cannot
be solved.

[Bug 944695] [NEW] Removing and readding the system tray in KDE doubles its size each time

2012-03-02 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When you remove and then readd the systemtray in KDE4. Its size is double every
time. This problem is described here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293472

The people in #plasma cannot reproduce it on KDE 4.8, so they wonder if
Ubuntu maybe patched the system tray.

The expected result is that the systemtray stays the same size. The
extra space it takes up is just empty. There appears to be a bug in a
Ubuntu patch which keeps doubling a certain value.

[Bug 548866] Re: forgets middlemouse.contentLoadURL on upgrade or browser restart

2012-02-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
This problem is still in precise as of today. A workaround is to
uninstall xul-ext-ubufox. For some reason there is a file included
(/usr/share/xul-ext/ubufox/defaults/preferences/ubuntu-mods.js) which
sets this preference to false. There is a comment included which
indicates this is normally true and could be set to false. Fixing the
package to have true in that file would seem to be the appropriate fix.

Seamonkey is not affected by this bug and pasting always works.

[Bug 757040] Re: stk11xx web-cam driver should be included in the kernel

2012-01-19 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems something is screwed up with the bot asking for log files here
(Brad Figg). There is no point in providing log files. This bug is about
a driver missing from Ubuntu required for a chip for a USB streaming
camera. Someone should create a DKMS package out of the source from the
repository mentioned above and add it to Debian/Ubuntu. Then users with
this type of camera can install this package have their camera work.

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2009-07-09 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Probably the bug is still there as long as there are no ata-piix related
changes in the changelog. Other than that it appears data corruption bugs and
system stability aren't very high priority with the Ubuntu devs :S
Even with my controller in AHCI mode, I've experienced several different types
of crashes hangs with the AMD64 kernel (no data corruption anymore though!).
I'll be trying out Karmic soon on my hardware, I guess we should hope Karmic
won't be such a catastrophe as Jaunty.

@feanorknd: These patches may all be valid, but this is unrelated to
this bug. This bug is about data corruption that occurs on ext3,
reiserfs and other non-ext4 filesystems. Anyone with ext4 problems
should not post here if they cannot reproduce this with ext3. Do a
proper search for the appropriate bug or create a new bug.

2009-06-20 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
2.6.28-13 is not likely to be bugfree. I checked the changelog and there
is no change since the 2.6.28-11 kernel which seems to be related to
this problem.

giorgio130, I suspect it will work on your system, I have a jhl91 myself
which appears to be very similar. In any case I would suggest you to
enable AHCI mode, because it should work better in any case.

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2009-06-19 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems i have found a solution which should work for at least Compal
notebooks. I found this based on information I found in one of the
duplicate bugs. It seems at least the ICH9 controllers have two modes of
operation. One is called IDE compatible or no-AHCI mode and is enabled
by default. This uses the ata-piix driver. If you manage to switch the
controller to AHCI mode it should use the ahci driver instead, which
does not seem to have any problems.

You can check what mode your controller is in using lspci. It will show
either IDE or AHCI depending on what mode is set. You can also check the
dmesg output for ata-piix or ahci.

Switching the controller to AHCI mode can be quite tricky. I was able to do it
using a Dos program from Compal's site. Here are the instructions:
1. Make sure syslinux is installed
2. Get https://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/ahci.dsk.gz
3. Gunzip the archive and put it in /boot
4. Add the following lines to /boot/grub/menu.lst:
title FreeDOS AHCI switch disk
root(hd0,1) #copy this from the other Ubuntu item
kernel /usr/lib/syslinux/memdisk #if your /boot is on a different
partition, copy this file to /boot and put /boot/memdisk here
initrd /boot/ahci.dsk
5. Boot the new boot item from grub (just press enter on the time date
prompt, there is no config.sys)
6. Run ahci_en

This should enable AHCI mode. You can verify this by running lspci or checking
the dmesg output. I built this bootdisk myself based on FreeDOS and the program
from Compal's website. You can also disable AHCI again with this disk.
I was able to do a clean Jaunty AMD64 install, do an update and run quite a few
applications after I had done this. fsck doesn't find any problems at all after
this and there were no strange crashes anymore.

I suspect that mainly Compal notebooks come with this mode set to no-AHCI,
which is why there are so many reports of this problem with Compal notebooks.
For others without Compal notebooks with this problem, verify your hardware is
in no-AHCI mode and try to switch it to AHCI mode through a similar tool. My
bootdisk probably won't work.

I understand that AHCI mode also gives better performance, so this
should be an optimal solution. The problem with the ata-piix driver in
this kernel should still be considered a bug though.

This bug also occurs with ext3 and other filesystems. If someone
experiences ext4 filesystem corruption on i386, it is not related to
this problem. Maybe some bug reports were over merged.

This bug is specifically about the corruption that occurs on mainly
Compal notebooks with the AMD64 version of Ubuntu irregardless of
filesystem.

This crash is reproducible with the trailer this page:

You have to have the mozilla-mplayer firefox packages installed. It's likely
it crashes because of the QuickTime movie. I'm using Jaunty.

[Bug 360756] Re: firefox crashed visiting apple site

2009-05-24 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I produced the attachment with Firefox 3.5pre4 from the firefox-3.5
packages. The crash also happens with the 3.0 version included in
Jaunty.

I'm not sure whether this backtrace is actually useful. I suspect this
is actually a crash in the mozilla-mplayer plug-in and it takes the
whole Firefox with it because browser plug-ins still run in-process.
What would be a suitable approach to find the cause of the crash in the
plug-in?

The version of the plug-in included with Jaunty, seems to be the most
recent one.
