 What's the output of ls /dev/snd/timer -l?

If it should be 'root audio', than AFAIK everything regarding to the

Usage of hpet is tricky and not a regular thingy.

Btw. are the xruns audible glitches?

Hi: Whereas I cannot join your 7 AM developer meeting due to another major
medical, let me reiterate I've faced many crashes and losses of valuable
non-developer productions using PPA add ons i.e., falkTx's kxstudio
10.04.02. I strongly urge Natty developers to devise means for the
non-developers who continually depend on your great work to in all means
possible, find some ways to separate final products from products that
remain under testing. As a non-developer I adamantly urge when any Ubuntu
Studio user's productions go down, it reflects upon all developers if issues
are allowed to ride just because they appear to be running okay. Having
faced needs of six separate personal family members whose issues call me to
their sides as well as having chosen to use Ubuntu Studio versus a cull from
the Gates and MAC worlds, I beat drums for you but please gals and guys, we
need every ounce of developer good will to keep the fires lite. Hurrah,
hurrah for the development team! Keep doing it. Kenneth

Myself, I'd like your answer for lucid lynx kxstudio 10.04.02. I use use
Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Ubuntu on 3 PCs and Acer Laptop. Yes, very, very often
your questions affect me. I return from coffee breaks with a note saying
You must finish this session in low graphics mode. Looking at the problem,
I have not believed the issue was so bad. Except forgetful as I am. I have
awaken as I learned from the many crashes, I'd lost very useful work that
could not be recovered.

Time after time, all that I'd been doing before a crash occurred [while I

losses are eventually forcing me to decide on whether I must turn to more
stable OSs. Ralf, please keep at it!! I for one believe the low latency

when set to ondemand, but this could cause glitches for the audio
 signal.
At least the user should know how to add the CPU Frequency Scaling
Monitor to the GNOME panel and how to set the governor.

For my Edubuntu Maverick 32-bit there's an entry for PolicyKit by

Is there a script or SUIID set, to enable selection of the frequency

Restoring JACK audio, MIDI and ALSA MIDI connections

There are some oddities for newbies, when restoring JACK audio

 - Names/aliases might change regarding to an added PID
 - There's the same name/alias for two different client ports
 - Unwanted auto-connections and connections that aren't correctly
restored by apps like QjackCtl or Qtractor

I could explain how to handle this in combination with very simple
 scripts to restore sessions.

I guess another getting started with [application] isn't needed.

IMO session handling is the most important stuff.

Has anybody experiences with LADI(SH) and Co.? JACK session? Patchage?

My obj continues to be to cut and splice in-house videos and still photos
for hobby, YouTube or DVD productions. About 12 months back, I threw in a
Gig of Ram on a $205 Mirus P5GC-MX that I picked up on line in Jan 2008. For
a while I tried to hog tie it while I had three SADA hds - 750 gig; 500 gig
and the original 80 gig. The OSs have held their own, you understanding that
an author-mediator-therapist who hobbies along, tends to just doggedly hang
in. Like you, I have asked for help. Can't imagine the thunder you Xpect to
make with an Athlon with 8gigs

At Goodwill over the past month, including today I have seen a bunch of
$99.00 Bare Bones ASUSTek machines all with several Gigs of memory on a
Video card, dual core, neat cooling fans and I believe 6/8 USBs w/out HDs. I
picked up a IMac with a neat 2/3giv video card and today saw a low priced
Dell decked with high performance video cards. I'd say if you look around a
bit, what you awaits you. Have Fun!

Re: dead mouse acer aspire 5517 LT

Daryl, Mike Ralph:
Thanks Daryl, your experience adds what I learned after having a total
reversal today. I called in to Acer presuming my laptop is defective. Reason
I say your experience is very valid, is this. The acer tech walked me
through a trip the system default mechanism. As I see it, when you removed
the battery, knowingly or unknowingly you too had forced your Aspire into
default.

To any and all, if your Aspire 5517 model's mouse dies, boot up once more
pressing the F2 till it allows you to spring the default steps. Then shut
down and boot up. Then click the button to the left of the power on button.
Wah la,,, if there is no actual defect, the mouse on your touch pad will
reactivate promptly. So Daryl, what I make of you removing the battery is
this. Your method breaks the jammed circuit by removing the weak battery
and booting up without the battery and running solely with the power cord.

Mike, would not my situation and the situation Daryl has explain both amount
to bringing the OS into a default start up? I believe so and sure was glad I
do not have to do without my laptop.

Did the trial run with two separate live DVDs and got no response on the
internal mouse so I checked with Frys Electronics where I bought my Acer.
They confirmed the date of sale and invoice # on file, then I drove out
where a diagnostic test was done. The test revealed a defect in the touch
pad and top cover; and, that this merited returning the Acer to the
manufacturer under their warranty. Though the laptop must be away, this
suggests no causative software issue.

Thanks for helping me verify the trouble.

HEY, thats great news... still under warranty... its a good idea to rule
out a hardware issue when possible so you dont go beating your head up
against the wall with the software (and i speak from at least quite a few
hours of experience wasted doing just that)...

if it were me, i would try and rule out a hardware problem. one easy way
to do that is get a live CD or make a live USB stick, boot it up, and see if
the mouse works. if the mouse works, then you know that you have broken
something in the software somewhere. in that case, i would try booting into
an older kernel. i would look at what updates have come in, and also, i
would run lspci in a terminal, and see if the OS is 'seeing' the mouse
(lspci or lsusb for USB devices). if i had an external USB mouse, i would
probably plug that in as well to test. you can also 'cast a wider net' as
far as looking for support. google ubuntu acer model# instead of
ubuntustudio acer model#. if you want to shutdown without using the
powerbutton, you can go to control+alt+F2, login, and use the command 'sudo
shutdown -h now' (without the quotes). feel free to let us know the exact
model of the unit, and maybe paste the output of lspci here, and also, what
F5 does on that unit in particular (or what it is supposed to do).

...sorry about that earlier post, i was trying 'reply inline' from my
droid, and i had an auto-complete fail...

sure have a lot of on and off line notices that I never observed before
this started. am backing up the wireless with a linksys stick. so I do not
know if am running off of wireless via my 2wire041 modem or from the stick.
will do some testing to know if this comes from a Vonage modem tied in to
ATT high speed internet or the 2wire ATT modem. ATT said it would not
work but once I saw that the speed was sufficient, I've managed to do what
they said would not work more than 20 months until an ATT substation rework
was done a mile away. Am a guinea pig amidst the ATT and Vonage conflict.
Vonage liked me being involved on that.

Again many thanks on making me think a bit. Sorry I have not really said
anything but it feels good to be talking about results.

sure have a lot of on and off line notices that I never observed before
this started. am backing up the wireless with a linksys stick. so I do not
know if am running off of wireless via my 2wire041 modem or from the stick.
will do some testing to know if this comes from a Vonage modem tied in to
ATT high speed internet or the 2wire ATT modem.

For what do multimedia users (producers, but consumers) need more,

vanilla + rt-patch? Does somebody run a multi-user data server on
   the
same machine, as he is using in his audio or audio-video studio?
   This
would be nonsense.

What would be nonsense? audio producers using hard RT preemption on
   the kernel?
Do you think that a webserver needs more Realtime preemption than
   audio work?

No, I guess for audio and audio-video productions we only need a vanilla
+ rt-patch kernel and nothing more.

Nobody should run a web-server or anything else on a DAW, so there are
  no other kernel patches needed.

I'm pro PREEMPT RT and against PREEMPT only ;) or any kernel patches
that don't make sense for audio, audio-video productions.

I was asking for reasons to patch a kernel with something like a
  'generic'-patch. A DAW, resp. audio-video-MIDI workstation don't need a
special server-kernel, or desktop-kernel etc., just a vanilla kernel +
  rt-patch.

Why does Ubuntu Studio comes without PREEMPT RT, but just PREEMPT?!
  This is my intension.

FWIW, I'm a professional audio and video engineer and did program oldish
computers and I'm missing hard real-time for modern PCs. Even the
  kernel-rt isn't able to do hard real-time, so I don't understand why
Ubuntu Studio does prefer a kernel without rt-patch. Today the rt-patch
  isn't good enough

 PS:

Pardon, it isn't good enough for all needs, but good for a lot of needs,
hence we should use the rt-patch.

and any kernel without this patch is useless for
  multimedia production.

  So a misunderstanding ;)!

As I see, If a webserver used a RT kernel, it would have a lot of
problems, because it will probably lock in some tasks until they are
   finished.

Audio needs a very low latency, high resolution timer etc, because the
Interrupts given by sound cards and by audio software need to be
   addressed as fast as possible,

This is what I'm thinking off, I sometimes use the hr timer, that on
Linux still is a PITA on some machines and for some apps.

Anyway, if possible a multimedia distro should use hr timer (HPET), but
  always a kernel-rt only.

if they arent, what happens is that the audio buffers, either for the
souncard playback, or capture will run out of data, and then the
continuos steam of audio data will be over, and wait until receive
more info. In a Nutshell, you LOSE audio data, and you will never get
it back, for professional audio that is unacceptable. Also if You give
software RT priorities, it less possible that, for instance, Ardour is
left behind of a twitter client unaceptable to...

I am going to make some simple math with a not so professional cenario
to ilstrate just the data stream, not audo software CPU time.

Recording and monitoring out 8 channels (8 in 8 out) at 48KS/s at 24
   bits

   48000 * 24 = 115200 bps = 14.0625KB/s

   14.0625 * 16 = 225 KB/s = 1.76MB/s

Well, 1.76 MB/s is not to much really, well this calc is simple
cenario, provided that the sound card uses real 24 bit audio data
stream, if it used 32 bit, welll do the math.

   Now to a PRO setup.. 192 KS/s @ 24bits

   192000 * 24 = 4608000 = 0.55 MB/s

   0.55 * 16 = 8,78 MB/s

8.78 MBytes per second, not mbits, FIrewire is rated at 400 MBit per
second... USB in practice is a lot less + Communication overhead.

This is only on the Audio tranfer side, then you need to send this
streams from each different software, make dsp calculations for
Amplitude (volume) or mixing. This takes time so YES a Real time
kernels is better for audio users than for normal users. Specially if
you use Externals Firewire/USB card with high outputs

  ubuntustudio maverick alpha. See:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntustudio-test...@lists.launchpad.net/msg00351.html

Thank you Pablo, it does solve this issue :).

I wonder what will happen, if I make my 2 Terratec EWX 24/96 cards 1
virtual card, anyway, today I just tested to get 1 of the 2 cards ready to
 work.

I tested analog stereo for KMPLayer set up to use PA and the sound
preferences were set up to analog stereo output and simultaneous output for
both cards, while I just tested one of the cards, but the sound was ok :).

Anyway, before this test Movie Player crashed and there are issues for the
website of a friend, http://achimjaroschek.com/music.html, while sound was
ok for his YouTube channel, e.g.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu6uFtCASYc.

 This does the trick:

Unfortunately there are still many issues and today there are some new
issues. I don't have those issues with 64 Studio 3.0 beta (Hardy) and 3.3
 alpha (Karmic) amd64.

I'm still in a production with recordings Achim and I made, so there's no
time to fix Ubuntu Studio right now. I'm doing the production using 64
Studio 3.3 alpha and even if the software works without issues, it's still
tricky and time consuming and there always is the risk of a crash, so I
can't use Linux for recording Achim and friends or other serious musicians
who are short in time, only if there's a lot of time, it can be used for
post processing. IMO for Ubuntu Studio it would help to remove desktop stuff
 like PA from the distro.

This and next month Achim does some concerts in Germany,
http://achimjaroschek.com/, certainly I'll be at the concerts in the
 Ruhrgebiet.

The next 6 month I'll do a job with elementary school kids, but
professional musicians, it might be that Linux could be more interesting
 then.

Andrew thanks for your words. Though my PC can't go online this morning its
built as Ubuntu Studio booted up saying Kubuntu 10.04.1. Sorry I
abbreviated this in my prior note to you, where I said: ending up with an
UbuStu OS that can handle what I cannot do with what boots up as UbuStu
10.04.1 Lucid 64amd in a Kubuntu. I mean I get no benefits after I built
Studio with terminal add on features. Those steps did me no good and I now
lack confidence in being able to build what it appears your ppa offers. Yes,
it would be better to find a fully built Ubuntu Studio 10.04 LTS than to try
to build a new package using the finesse that may exist if I set aside what
my desk is committed to, plus to build the maybe that your ppa offers. My
apologies.

Truly, an urgent need exists for a fully functional UbuStu 10.04.1 or
10.04.2 or 10.04.3. Without that all the developing that's done goes for
naught as far as users under the gun like me are concerned. Many thanks for
all the hard work; but, for the user to function, it's paramount that full
package, Here it is, please test it and tell me how it works, is where the
rubber hits the road yesterday - today - tomorrow.

No, these are nightly builds of the upstream source code. You still
need to install Ubuntu Studio (or plain Ubuntu), then add this on top.
There are no guarentiees that the software is not broken.

For example, you need feature X that has landed in FFmpeg but is not
included in the version of FFmpeg in Lucid. You could build FFmpeg
from source yourself, but that bypass the package system entirely.

 Hello Aradnix,

I would highly suggest you look at this web page on the

This page specifically discusses upgrading from a regular Ubuntu

Please be careful about including the linux-rt package though. I believe
that the only real-time kernel available is an older kernel. This available
real-time kernel is completely functional and will provide you with
real-time functionality, however since it is not the latest available it
might be missing some hardware drivers for newer hardware.

 Ken,

I'm not sure what you are saying.

If you have the normal repositories enabled then you should not have any
updates for Traverso for a Lucid install. Nothing official has been
backported or released, Traverso for Lucid remains at traverso-0.49.0~rc1.

However, if you were to add my PPA as a software repository you can update
your Lucid install so that it has traverso-0.49.1.

Note, while I don't use Traverso I did update it on one of my Lucid install
and played with it for ten minutes. It didn't crash on me during that time.

Kenneth, there are several ways to do this.

You can follow the way that the PPA help pages says, which is more terminal
 based:
 https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/InstallingSoftware

Or you can follow the help.ubuntu.com pages, which is more graphical and
GUI based, payin special attention to the 'Third Party Software Tab' section
 :
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

After you have updated your repositories you will need to 'Reload' the list
of available software. Then you should be able to search for the Rakarrack
update with Synaptic...or wait ten minutes and Update Manager should inform
 you of it as well.

If you are still having trouble please let us know.

I can't find a reference to this link in any of the mail on this

believe it just appeared from nowhere. Ubuntu shall provide.

Anyway, the above link has a workaround: change the jumper from
slave to cable select, which AFAIK should be the wrong setting,
but it works. I have not tested burns yet, but it does play a CD. It
also does not appear in the menu under Places. Navigate to
PlacesComputer, and it is in the file browser window that opens.

I am still working with the ubuntu-studio-developers folks in case
they want to patch something so the jumper change is not necessary.

 Thanks for your help,

read the install DVD, does not exist as far as Ubuntu Studio is concerned.
Since the drive worked fine while running generic Ubuntu 9.10 from a flash
drive, I could probably fix the problem simply by installing the generic
10.04 and adding the Studio packages. However, if there is any interest in
finding and fixing this Ubuntu Studio-specific problem, I am willing to keep
this install and work with the list to get it ironed out. I would really
like to see Ubuntu Studio work for as many people as possible. I am
concerned that the adoption of Ubuntu Studio could be seriously hindered if
such common hardware is not usable. Does anyone want to work on this with

 Greetings Teza,

I agree that having documentation about hardware that just works with
Ubuntu Studio would be very helpful and information. Especially to someone
who wants to get into Ubuntu Studio or even upgrade their hardware.

As Ricardo said, the wikis are available for users not only to view but to
also create. If anyone feels reasonably confident about the information
they are documenting then I would encourage everyone to do so. Please be
respectful of other's work and try to avoid destructive edits if possible.

I would stress that all users are empowered to help improve Ubuntu Studio.
Whether that is reporting bugs, testing ISOs, advocacy or updating/creating
documentation. We as users can do all these things. The only thing
required for documentation is an account to edit/create pages on
 help.ubuntu.com or wiki.ubuntu.com.

This would even be a great project for a LoCo. At one meeting everyone get
together and create a wiki page and list everyone's hardware that works
along with their Ubuntu Studio version!

But I will also make a special offer as well. If you (and anyone) will
either respond to this mailing list or email me directly (
scottalaven...@gmail.com with Ubuntu Studio Hardware as the Subject) I
will add this information into a wiki myself. Just tell me what hardware
you have that just works with Ubuntu Studio and which version of Ubuntu
 Studio you are running.

Thank you again Teza for not only using Ubuntu Studio but emailing the
 list.

Yes, that was the issue. I hadn't realised quite how much KDE stuff Knode

 Hello all,

Recently Ubuntu Studio's forum at Ubuntu Forums has undergone a name change
and we are excite to share some information about it with you.

Under the Main Support Categories you will now find a forum labeled 'Ubuntu
Studio' that replaces the previous Multimedia Production' forum. This
change is intended to address two key issues for our community.

Firstly, the name change will eliminate any confusion as to where to post
 Ubuntu Studio related topics.

Additionally, we hope that this forum becomes the nexus of ALL things
Ubuntu Studio, not just focused on problems. Therefore, feel free to post
 ANYTHING about Ubuntu Studio.

Every Ubuntu Studio user is encouraged to visit the renamed forum and post
 about:

  * your current setup
  * settings that work well for you
  * examples of audio/graphics/video you have created
  * suggestions and improvements
  * new applications to consider including in future releases
  * suggestions for replacement apps (e.g. Creox - Rakarrack)
  * when problems exist and help is required
  * the future of Ubuntu Studio
  * anything else related to Ubuntu Studio and not mentioned here!

We are extremely exciting about the changes and hope to see you in the
 forums.

 Regards,
 ScottL

Hi anyone:

on ubuntu karmic 9.10 amd 64, having downloaded the wireless firmware for my
acer laptop 5517 on the broadcom 4312 chip, I am asking, does anyone know
what steps I should use to give me an internal wireless capability.

I'd like to light up an internal capability.

Many thanks from Kenneth.

the guidance given therein may help answer your questions about removing the
Pulseaudio soundserver. Apologies for not going toe to toe with an answer.

Can anybody give an advice to remove Pulseaudio from Karmic? I want to use

Introduction to Ardour FLOSS Manual now online
 http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/

Ardour is a full-featured, free and open-source hard disk recorder and
digital audio workstation program suitable for professional use. It
features unlimited audio tracks and buses, non-destructive, non-linear
editing with unlimited undo, and anything-to-anywhere signal routing. It
supports standard file formats, such as BWF, WAV, WAV64, AIFF and CAF,
and it can use LADSPA, LV2, VST and AudioUnit plugin formats.

The Introduction to Ardour FLOSS Manual is a free (gratis/libre)
tutorial-style book, which introduces the program without expecting a
vast knowledge of computers or sound editing from the reader. This FLOSS
Manual was largely written by workshop participants learning the
software themselves, over a one week period during a session led by
Derek Holzer at the moddr_lab/WORM in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This FLOSS Manual can be read online at:http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/

Non-profit, print-on-demand paper copies can be ordered from Lulu.com
soon. Please check back with the main FLOSS Manuals page in several days
 for ordering information:http://en.flossmanuals.net/

The manual is free to use, distribute and remix according to the GNU
General Public License. FLOSS Manuals volunteers are currently working
on French and Portuguese translations, and anyone is free to add
contributions and edits for future versions of the manual
 athttp://en.flossmanuals.net/bin/view/Ardour/WebHome

Thanks to Adam Hyde, Walter Langelaar, the workshop participants in
Rotterdam as well as those who helped online from the FLOSS Manuals,

To my mind you pointed out the most importand point, not only for Ubuntu

 It's plain marketing, a lie.

Even if you are a dedicated open source fan, normaly you don't think

But if we advertise a product as easy and so on, then we only copy
closed source marketing. And perhaps it has to be the question, if this
 is the right way.
Does opens source the marketing-lies of closed source?

Even for Windows it's a lie, because this product as well can be very
