Re: Ubuntu Studio Developer Meeting
Hi: Whereas I cannot join your 7 AM developer meeting due to another major medical, let me reiterate I've faced many crashes and losses of valuable non-developer productions using PPA add ons i.e., falkTx's kxstudio 10.04.02. I strongly urge Natty developers to devise means for the non-developers who continually depend on your great work to in all means possible, find some ways to separate final products from products that remain under testing. As a non-developer I adamantly urge when any Ubuntu Studio user's productions go down, it reflects upon all developers if issues are allowed to ride just because they appear to be running okay. Having faced needs of six separate personal family members whose issues call me to their sides as well as having chosen to use Ubuntu Studio versus a cull from the Gates and MAC worlds, I beat drums for you but please gals and guys, we need every ounce of developer good will to keep the fires lite. I thank you for sharing the mystery that Tascam US-122 brought you. If you have not yet done so, tell more symptoms associated with the problem you are having. Post them. Perhaps another user with more experience than you or I can guide you to a solution. It is possible that you may click on System Administration Synaptic Package Manager that you may put Tascam US-122 into the finder and click on install Tascam US-122, which I believe will uninstall and reinstall Tascam US-122. If that program truly does what it is supposed to do, this procedure may cause the system to cure itself. Plus, if you get odd outputs, posting those back here may bring you help. Re: dead mouse acer aspire 5517 LT
Daryl, Mike Ralph: Thanks Daryl, your experience adds what I learned after having a total reversal today. I called in to Acer presuming my laptop is defective. Reason I say your experience is very valid, is this. The acer tech walked me through a trip the system default mechanism. As I see it, when you removed the battery, knowingly or unknowingly you too had forced your Aspire into default. To any and all, if your Aspire 5517 model's mouse dies, boot up once more pressing the F2 till it allows you to spring the default steps. Then shut down and boot up. Then click the button to the left of the power on button. Wah la,,, if there is no actual defect, the mouse on your touch pad will reactivate promptly. So Daryl, what I make of you removing the battery is this. Your method breaks the jammed circuit by removing the weak battery and booting up without the battery and running solely with the power cord. Mike, would not my situation and the situation Daryl has explain both amount to bringing the OS into a default start up? I believe so and sure was glad I do not have to do without my laptop. What would be nonsense? audio producers using hard RT preemption on the kernel? Do you think that a webserver needs more Realtime preemption than audio work? No, I guess for audio and audio-video productions we only need a vanilla + rt-patch kernel and nothing more. Nobody should run a web-server or anything else on a DAW, so there are no other kernel patches needed. I'm pro PREEMPT RT and against PREEMPT only ;) or any kernel patches that don't make sense for audio, audio-video productions. I was asking for reasons to patch a kernel with something like a 'generic'-patch. A DAW, resp. audio-video-MIDI workstation don't need a special server-kernel, or desktop-kernel etc., just a vanilla kernel + rt-patch. Why does Ubuntu Studio comes without PREEMPT RT, but just PREEMPT?! This is my intension. FWIW, I'm a professional audio and video engineer and did program oldish computers and I'm missing hard real-time for modern PCs. Even the kernel-rt isn't able to do hard real-time, so I don't understand why Ubuntu Studio does prefer a kernel without rt-patch. Today the rt-patch isn't good enough PS: Pardon, it isn't good enough for all needs, but good for a lot of needs, hence we should use the rt-patch. and any kernel without this patch is useless for multimedia production. So a misunderstanding ;)! As I see, If a webserver used a RT kernel, it would have a lot of problems, because it will probably lock in some tasks until they are finished. Audio needs a very low latency, high resolution timer etc, because the Interrupts given by sound cards and by audio software need to be addressed as fast as possible, This is what I'm thinking off, I sometimes use the hr timer, that on Linux still is a PITA on some machines and for some apps. Anyway, if possible a multimedia distro should use hr timer (HPET), but always a kernel-rt only. if they arent, what happens is that the audio buffers, either for the souncard playback, or capture will run out of data, and then the continuos steam of audio data will be over, and wait until receive more info. In a Nutshell, you LOSE audio data, and you will never get it back, for professional audio that is unacceptable. Also if You give software RT priorities, it less possible that, for instance, Ardour is left behind of a twitter client unaceptable to... I am going to make some simple math with a not so professional cenario to ilstrate just the data stream, not audo software CPU time. Recording and monitoring out 8 channels (8 in 8 out) at 48KS/s at 24 bits 48000 * 24 = 115200 bps = 14.0625KB/s 14.0625 * 16 = 225 KB/s = 1.76MB/s Well, 1.76 MB/s is not to much really, well this calc is simple cenario, provided that the sound card uses real 24 bit audio data stream, if it used 32 bit, welll do the math. Now to a PRO setup.. 192 KS/s @ 24bits 192000 * 24 = 4608000 = 0.55 MB/s 0.55 * 16 = 8,78 MB/s 8.78 MBytes per second, not mbits, FIrewire is rated at 400 MBit per second... USB in practice is a lot less + Communication overhead. This is only on the Audio tranfer side, then you need to send this streams from each different software, make dsp calculations for Amplitude (volume) or mixing. This takes time so YES a Real time kernels is better for audio users than for normal users. Specially if you use Externals Firewire/USB card with high outputs note: this are simple calculations made fast, just to demonstrate the kind of stream we talk about. Scott, Laurent, Teza: this afternoon I downloaded Traverso as recommended running Lucid UStu 10.04.1; didn't get a change, i.e., working response. Not sure where this is leading. Ken Please note that both Debian and Ubuntu are shifting to a new version of jack which may be screwing up libraries moving backwards to Lucid. Nothing official has been backported or released, Traverso for Lucid remains at traverso-0.49.0~rc1. However, if you were to add my PPA as a software repository you can update your Lucid install so that it has traverso-0.49.1. Especially to someone who wants to get into Ubuntu Studio or even upgrade their hardware. As Ricardo said, the wikis are available for users not only to view but to also create. If anyone feels reasonably confident about the information they are documenting then I would encourage everyone to do so. Please be respectful of other's work and try to avoid destructive edits if possible. I would stress that all users are empowered to help improve Ubuntu Studio. Whether that is reporting bugs, testing ISOs, advocacy or updating/creating documentation. We as users can do all these things. The only thing required for documentation is an account to edit/create pages on help.ubuntu.com or wiki.ubuntu.com. This would even be a great project for a LoCo. At one meeting everyone get together and create a wiki page and list everyone's hardware that works along with their Ubuntu Studio version! But I will also make a special offer as well. If you (and anyone) will either respond to this mailing list or email me directly ( scottalaven...@gmail.com with Ubuntu Studio Hardware as the Subject) I will add this information into a wiki myself. Re: Do I need to re-install to go from 10.04 beta to 10.04 stable
Stewart H Yes you can update your xbuntu rather than reinstall. Before doing this, you may view an experience factor posted by various users at ubuntuforums.org.
