[Bug 1976361] Re: man page “passes the buck” to a dead end for .netrc docs
Athos, just to make sure we do not misunderstand: there has been no word of patches from me. Any downstream backporting will be "pluck the commits from Git repo and integrate them yourselves". [Bug 1976361] Re: man page “passes the buck” to a dead end for .netrc docs
Re 1 - Ubuntu's packaging bug. It is the distributor's obligation to properly integrate packages. Re 2 - not a bug in fetchmail. Re 3 - Yes, users can expect as much, but you are right that this is not really viable because there is no such thing as a standard ftp(1). It is not part of IEEE 1003.1. Some systems also have a netrc(5), for instance, Fedora 36's netkit ftp. So: Valid wishlist item. However, regarding the guessing: you can have the source code, so USTL: use the source, Luke. Or whoever you are. Will consider documenting netrc for upstream as I am the upstream maintainer, but it is not in my interest to get this back into distros. [Bug 1938719] Re: (feature request) support for non-stdio plugins (like Hydroxide)
I was proposing preconnect, not plugin. -> comment #2. There is also postconnect in fetchmail. You may need to script interfaces with delay and readiness checks. As written before, daemon management is out of fetchmail's scope. Fetchmail is not going to turn into another systemd. Again, fetchmail does *NOT* need new features here, and this bug tracker is not meant for advice and consultation of complex interfacing rigs with proprietary web services, public API or not. And if you are inconvenienced by hydroxide's design, feature requests are best filed there - through its primary channels, not secondary ones such as downstream bug trackers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938719 Title: (feature request) support for non-stdio plugins (like Hydroxide) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fetchmail/+bug/1938719/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1938719] Re: (feature request) support for non-stdio plugins (like Hydroxide)
Lucas, it is still a support request rather than a feature request since the feature is already there - but unsuitable for the use case. That's why I marked it invalid already. It makes no sense to burden distributions with feature requests because users are unaware of existing features for rare use cases that reveal shortcomings in other tools.

Bill, judging from the hydroxide webpage, all you need to do is make sure that hydroxide is running properly and then you can tell fetchmail to use that port 1143 to fetch through. You may need to use the "via" keyword in a fetchmail configuration file (it is not available through the command line interface) to connect to the server. I do not see a reason to duplicate daemon control features into fetchmail for which more than half a dozen solutions exist already.
[Bug 1934155] Re: fetchmail can no longer connect to underwood & gives false error msg (TLS issues)
Bill, I can sense quite a deal of frustration on your end, and am sorry for that. I should have mentioned to also look into the NEWS file, which at least would have told you that sslcertck is now the default. Fetchmail's -vv verbose mode might also try to log more details on the decisions along the way... Your feedback as to how you find documentation confusing or incomplete or incompletely referenced is helpful, thank you for that - although it will take a while before improvements will make it into Ubuntu, this is due to how software ends up for Ubuntu. On the other hand, I must say that nobody promised that fetchmail 6.4 would be bug-for-bug-compatible with 6.3, and fetchmail has indeed changed in the years between the 6.3.26 and 6.4.1X releases. In particular, I was making fetchmail 6.4 protect users' credentials more thoroughly, and this is why fetchmail finally defaults to certificate validation, and that makes "opportunistic" encryption quite a bit more mandatory, and the failing STARTTLS after the server hadn't offered it was/is not helpful: In order to validate certificates, fetchmail will try to obtain one - and on a non-SSL connection this means starttls, and fetchmail tries it blind. I see that it is less transparent to users than I would have hoped, so thanks for mirroring that - the certificate validation makes TLS (or STARTTLS in-band negotiation for that matter) less opportunistic and more mandatory than parts of the documentation suggest. So, "no sslcertck" is currently required to make "opportunistic" TLS really opportunistic (your "config 2" - and not in an obscure way mandatory), and "sslproto ''" indeed defeats TLS negotiation at all (your config 3). I need to think a bit more about which changes could go into 6.5, and which will have to wait for 7.0, where the version is more of a flag to users that reads "beware of incompatibilities". -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934155 Title: fetchmail can no longer connect to underwood & gives false error msg (TLS issues) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fetchmail/+bug/1934155/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1934155] Re: fetchmail can no longer connect to underwood & gives false error msg (TLS issues)
Bill, as to your report, I'll break it down along the same bug numbers. Note I am speaking as the upstream maintainer here and am unaware of Ubuntu's Bug #1. Fetchmail behaves properly. You requested some sslproto on a non-wrapped port (i. e. no "ssl" option), so fetchmail tries STARTTLS instead, which then fails. I suggest you re-read the manual for the relevant options that you are using and potential references from those options to others, if any. This is deliberately worded quite vaguely. Bug #2 fetchmail has a 'login or authentication' error it cannot spell out in more detail for you, hence "unknown". Feel free to propose a better wording. 3a. I suggest you read the section "SOCKS" of the manual page. New options are quite high maintenance and I can't test them upstream for lack of socks proxies. 3b. From your earlier report [*] I suppose you might get away with something such as: poll underwood2hj3pwd.onion via 127.0.0.1 plugin "socat STDIO SOCKS4A:127.0.0.1:%h:%p,socksport=9050" # other options here _ [*] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fetchmail/+bug/1924609 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934155 Title: fetchmail can no longer connect to underwood & gives false error msg (TLS issues) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fetchmail/+bug/1934155/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1924609] Re: onion sites inaccessible due to internal DNS lookup
Bill, fetchmail relies on the system resolver so if that cannot resolve .onion hosts, that's bound to fail. You are not telling fetchmail to avoid name resolution. [Bug 1924622] Re: add a security feature to randomize the fetch schedule
Bill, in your threat scenario, I think it best to avoid the daemon mode altogether, and then just use some external random delay tool (possibly some script language one-liner) to delay a one-shot fetchmail run. You can always set up separate directories, for instance, by way of the FETCHMAILHOME variable and configure each account at the same provider separately. Bottom line, this is much easier to solve outside fetchmail than inside. -> For me as the upstream maintainer, this is very near to a WONTFIX. [Bug 1924618] Re: add a "delete after" option
Bill, thanks for the proposal. I'll answer as upstream maintainer. The former fetchmail maintainer, Eric S. Raymond, years go, decided against this feature ("do one job well"), but I am open to it. Technically however I need to change the .fetchids format, so this is release 7.0 business, meaning many months out. Please re-file this feature request (without the privacy "reason") as new issue here: https://gitlab.com/fetchmail/fetchmail/-/issues and then reference it from this launchpad request. Notes: The use case of truncating history is also valid for me, OTOH you don't know whether your mail service provider will just put a delete mark on your mail and hide it from your view without actually erasing it, or for some legislations is under some secret surveillance order and blind carbon copies the prosecutor or intelligence, so there is no privacy gain. For real privacy, e-mail is likely a lost cause and even if you encrypt end-to-end there's a truckload of metadata available to everyone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1924618 Title: add a "delete after" option To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fetchmail/+bug/1924618/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Whoops. I had misread this BR, on a smartphone, as though it had been filed through sourceforge, but of course it's right here on launchpad. [Bug 1317449]
(In reply to b3nmore from comment #58) FYI, I reported this issue for ubuntu at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/digikam/+bug/1315932 and asked for updating sqlite3 at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sqlite3/+bug/1317449 . As a temporary workaround I use the sqlite3 (3.8.4) packages from debian testing, which solves this issue for me. I set up a PPA for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that has a newer sqlite3 build. I made my life easy and just rebuilt the utopic unicorn src dpkg, and I do not intend to support this; it's a makeshift arrangement. https://launchpad.net/~matthias-andree/+archive/ubuntu/trusty-fixes Ubuntu packagers aren't helpful and are asking that someone isolates the fix from the upgraded sqlite3 package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to digikam in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1317449 Title: sqlite3 version 3.8.2 breaks digikam To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/digikam/+bug/1317449/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Christopher, support, trust, reputation do not work this way. Ubuntu neglect the bug for three years (!) as usual - which is a massive issue in itself - and then close the bug as invalid because the affected distro went EOL, with five releases being made since the report without someone seriously looking on the bug. I still have the document, and I suggest to test on 12.04 LTS instead of 14. I'm not uploading stuff that reveals some personal information to just everyone. I can provide it to anyone who makes plausible he is looking into the issue; however it appeared to me the cause is cancelling a print-in-progress that seems to be triggering a race condition, rather than the document itself. [Bug 1374610] [NEW] telinit u makes upstart's /sbin/init lose all information on running processes (PIDs)
Public bug reported: running telinit u causes init to re-exec itself. It loses all process state information in the process, so that services can no longer be stopped/restarted, and restart or start will either start a daemon twice or fail to start it as a consequence. There needs to be a way that either: - init, telinit, initctl and possibly other manual pages warn of this loss of information; or - this feature gets removed, or - init remembers the process IDs across a restart unless told otherwise. [Bug 1370363] [NEW] deja-dup fails reporting Permission denied, no error logs anywhere
Public bug reported: I have had a working deja-dup setup under Ubuntu 12.04LTS. I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04LTS. Now deja-dup no-longer works, the window states Permission denied (the German translation), also if I run DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup --backup there is no output at all. (I am currently trying running it from a KDE desktop.) I can still successfully run duplicity collection-status + the URL I find in org.gnome.deja-dup's file backend configuration and get a reasonable output, so it does not appear to be an ssh-related issue. I moved .cache/deja-dup out of the way, for no improvement. How do we go about debugging this? Actually the error message is Access denied. - which is not very specific. Also, the fault might be specific to running deja-dup under a KDE desktop. [Bug 1370363] Re: deja-dup fails reporting Permission denied, no error logs anywhere
So, bottom line is that: 1. deja-dup is failing to procure the necessary SSH/SFTP password, 2. failing to report the fact it does not have the SSH/SFTP password, 3. not offering an alternative way of getting the password (it is in my ssh-agent but still...) 4. failing to properly report which access in particular was denied, and what deja-dup was trying to do. [Bug 1305232] [NEW] Postfix fails to start, failure to copy certificates
Public bug reported: Postfix frequently fails to start after security updates to the ca- certificates package because upgrading the latter sometimes leaves dangling symlinks behind.
