Hi Laurent

Ubuntu is a product published by Canonical, just like Windows is a product
published by Microsoft. You can contact Canonical here:

Re: [Ubuntu-be] New involvement with MIC in MONS (Bergen)

2023-02-06 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Hey Laurent

I'm part of the Ubuntu Community Council, so I might be able to get you in
contact with the right people. Do you have any idea of what kind of
collaboration you are looking for?

   - The larger Ubuntu community hangs out in a bunch of places, but our
discourse forum <https://discourse.ubuntu.com/> is a good place to
start. Developers, Canonical employees, and volunteers use this forum to
discuss Ubuntu development and community projects.
   - The Ubuntu-hideout discord server <https://discord.com/invite/ubuntu>
also has a large community, although this is more tailored towards
  enthusiasts.
  - There is also a French-language community
  <https://www.ubuntu-fr.org/> and forum <https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/>
that might be interesting to you.
  - Canonical <https://canonical.com/> is the company behind Ubuntu.
They offer commercial support and services to companies using Ubuntu. They
employ a lot of Ubuntu developers, although some of them (like me) are
volunteers or employed by other companies. I can get you in contact with
their sales team if you're interested in commercial support or services.

Does this help you further? Let me know if you have any other questions.

Kind regards
Merlijn

Hey Laurent

I apologize but it's still not clear to me what you are asking specifically.

Are you asking how to contact Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu? Or are
you asking how to contact the Ubuntu community? Or something else?

Hi Laurent

Welcome!

What do you mean with an "Ubuntu exec"?

We currently don't really have a national community in Belgium, but there
are a lot of people using and contributing to Ubuntu in Belgium, and a lot
of regional Linux usergroups and hacker/makerspaces that organize
occasional events.

establish a consensus on the right path to take, especially where diverse

Call for nominations: Ubuntu Technical Board

2022-11-04 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
We are looking for nominations for people to join the Ubuntu Technical
Board.

The Ubuntu Technical Board is responsible for the technical direction of
Ubuntu. It makes decisions on package selection, packaging policy,
installation systems and processes, kernel, X server, display management,
library versions, and dependencies. The board works with relevant teams to
establish a consensus on the right path to take, especially where diverse
elements of Ubuntu cannot find consensus on shared components. The current
Technical Board is expiring at the end of the year, and the Community
Council would like to confirm a new Technical Board, consisting of five

   -

Be available during typical meeting hours [see
   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TechnicalBoardAgenda]
   -

Insight into the Ubuntu Development process, architecture, and technical
   culture

The Technical Board usually meets twice a month in IRC and has discussions
on its mailing list. They are current Ubuntu Core Developers with a proven
track record of activity in the community. They have shown themselves over
time to be able to work well with others and display the positive aspects
of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. They should be people who can judge
contribution quality without emotion while engaging in an
interview/discussion that communicates interest, a welcoming atmosphere,
and which is marked by humanity, gentleness, and kindness.

You can find more information about the Technical Board at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TechnicalBoard

If this sounds like you or a person you know, please send your nominations
to community-council AT lists.ubuntu.com.

Please include the name, Launchpad ID, and Ubuntu Wiki page for whom you
are nominating, as well as a few lines about the nominee, so the Community
Council can get an idea of why you/they would like to join the Board and
why you/they would like to be considered. If you nominate someone else,
please make sure that they are willing to accept the nomination.

Nominations are now open and will close on Thursday, November 17th, 2020,
at 23:59 UTC. After that, the Community Council will review the
submissions, submit them to Mark Shuttleworth for shortlisting, and proceed
with a vote by the Ubuntu Development team.

Please do not hesitate to share this post with anyone you think deserves to
be on the Technical Board.

[Bug 1741074] Re: [snap] chrome-gnome-shell extension fails to detect native host connector

2021-09-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I want to make this a bit more clear:

Every single Belgian needs this functionality in order to do basic stuff
like:

* File their taxes
* Read communication from the government
* Check their medical history
* Register for a (covid) vaccine
* Rent stuff from the government
* etc.

It is vital that this issue is fixed before phasing out the Firefox deb
package. With the Chromium apt package gone, there will be no
alternative in the Ubuntu repositories to do these basic things in
Belgium.

It’s really nice that our government is supporting Ubuntu using open-
source software (https://github.com/Fedict/eid-mw) using common
standards and APIs. Breaking this vital functionality looks like a big
middle-finger to them.

[Bug 1888380] Re: Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

2020-08-11 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Note: this message is only shown when Chromium is actually migrated, not
when a user installs the `chromium-browser` package manually. Given that
this was the way to install chromium in previous released, many users do
this without reading the description of the package.

These users are also surprised that the snap is installed. It might be
useful to show the message to everyone who installed chromium using the
apt package.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2020-02-07 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Thanks @peterrus!

I can confirm that using swapoff completely removes the hanging and
stuttering during heavy disk IO.

I don't see this only during file copy. Extracting archives, for
example, or saving virtual machine state to disk cause the same kind of
stuttering and hanging. It was impossible for me to import an .ova image
into VirtualBox when swap was on because my system became unresponsive.
After turning swap off, I can use virtualbox again!!

Do you have any idea why this doesn't work automatically? I'm happy to
help debug if you let me know what information is needed.

[Bug 1576411] Re: UTF-8 is not very well supported inside snaps

2018-11-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
@chipaca

The issue that remains is that applications that need UTF-8 require
workarounds in the snap.

This issue explains it in more detail with an example in python:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapcraft/+bug/1804845

Basically, the issue is that stuff like $LANG gets passed into the snap,
but the snap only has the locales C, C.UTF-8 and POSIX. As a result,
python applications fall back to ASCII, breaking many libraries such as
click.

snapcraft itself has that issue and works around it by forcing
"C.UTF-8":
https://github.com/snapcore/snapcraft/blob/4042556714400d2156cb89efb86bf294500d1f41/snapcraft/cli/__main__.py#L40

I don't know if this is a snapd, core, documentation or snapcraft issue,
but many, many people trip over it. Just look at how many forum posts
contain locale errors concerning C.UTF-8:
https://forum.snapcraft.io/search?q=locale%20c.utf-8%20error

[Bug 1719797] Re: Firmware update seemingly not working

2018-11-21 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I faked it previously by manually downgrading my bios (downloading the
previous version from the bios vendor, putting it on a FAT32 USB stick
and using the upgrade option in the bios setup), after which the
software center shows the update again.

There should also be a way to downgrade using the fwupdate commandline
tool.

Dit is het nieuwe inlogvenster van Ubuntu 18.04. Nornmaal gezien staat daar

wachtwoord ingeven.

I disagree because this is the behavior on all other DE's, on Windows

[Bug 1781256] Re: installation failed

2018-07-18 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Hi Phillip, thanks for looking into this.

Can you quickly explain why you think this is the case? What part of the
logs shows

1. that I booted in EFI mode
2. that the disk is partitioned in BIOS mode
3. that I didn't choose "use entire disk"

I don't remember what mode I booted it in, but I'm pretty sure that I
chose the "use entire disk" option.

After this issue, I restarted the computer and chose to go to the
installer directly instead of to the live session first. I chose "use
entire disk" again and the installation worked. Are the logs of a
successful install saved somewhere on the computer, so I can compare the
logs?

[Bug 1759628] Re: bluez regression: Bluetooth audio fails to reconnect after resume

2018-06-15 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I've been using the bluez ppa for a while now and I haven't had any
issues with it. Before, I'd regularly have connection issues to my bose
qc 35. Now, I can always connect immediately, haven't had an issue
since.

I also noticed that my headset now connects a lot quicker than with the
stock 18.04 bluez.

So I'm really hoping that this can get included in mainline 18.04 as
soon as possible, this will make many users happy :)

I do not think those bugs are related to this issue since this is a
regression and since the bug explicitly mentions that the menu is
correct, but the status icon is not.

In my case neither the status icon nor menu are correct and it seems as
if the menu in its entirety just doesn't get updated when any (vpn)
state changes.

[Bug 1772636] Re: panel shows "VPN off" when VPN is in fact running

2018-05-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Yes, the list of vpn toggles in the panel gets out of sync with the
actual state of the VPNs. The Settings app shows the correct state.

Note that I've never experienced this with 17.10 and I always experience
this with 18.04. This is thus a regression in my case.

Maybe relevant:

If I add a new VPN in the settings app, the panel also doesn't get
updated; the new vpn doesn't show up in the list of available vpn's in
the applet.

In attachment a screenshot which shows the issue in one shot. Notice
that the `vmware-tengu-vpn` is active according to settings, but not
active according to the panel and note how `NEWVPN` is not shown at all
in the panel.

[Bug 1720510] Re: Content sometime not display until a focus/geometry change

2018-01-25 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I did some more testing for this bug. I can't reproduce it using
Communitheme. This seems to be an Ambiance-specific issue.

I can relieably reproduce this every time using the following workflow
on Ambiance and not on Communitheme:

1. Open gnome software
2. Install or uninstall rocketchat
3. Close gnome software
4. Open gnome software
5. Search for libreoffice
- No search results are being displayed. Two ways to show the search results:
 a) go back to gnome software home page and search again -> search displays now
 b) click on another window (of another application) -> search results appear
as soon as you click.

** Also affects: ubuntu-themes
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

- Test case:
- Open a new version of gnome-software/Ubuntu Software
- Search for soft
- No results are shown
- Do something outside the gnome-software window, e.g mouse click or focus on
another window, and the results are shown.
+ # Test case 1:
+
+ 1. Open a new version of gnome-software/Ubuntu Software
+ 2. Search for soft
+ 3. No results are shown
+ 4. Do something outside the gnome-software window, e.g mouse click or focus
on another window, and the results are shown.
+
+ # Test case 2 (reliably reproduces issue every time):
+
+ 1. Open gnome software
+ 2. Install or uninstall rocketchat
+ 3. Close gnome software
+ 4. Open gnome software
+ 5. Search for libreoffice
+ - No search results are being displayed.

[Bug 1730343] Re: firmware update breaks Ubuntu

2017-12-15 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Many people have commented on the bug reports, and more people have
given a "thumbs up" to my comment explaining the workaround to get their
system booting again.

This is an issue that is actively bricking many people's machines. The
only reason why we haven't yet seen thousands of people having this
issue is because Dell hasn't yet released a firmware update since the
bug was introduced. As a result, only people with new laptops or those
who just upgraded from a version that doesn't have fwupdate experience
this issue.

Please, fix this issue as soon as possible.

[Bug 1726320] Re: suggested and destructive colours are too bright

2017-12-14 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I actually think the colors are good as they are. At least the green
color should be very bright because of it's unusual placement (on the
top of the window instead of on the bottom). We need to draw the user's
attention to it.

** Description changed:

  Bose QC35 with latest firmware
  Ubuntu 17.10

This is a regression from 17.04 Ubuntu Gnome. In 17.04, you had to
temporarily disable `le` mode to pair but after pairing, everything
worked flawlessly. In 17.10, pairing works out of the box, but the
  following issue appears:

After a few hours of being connected, the connection between bose qc35
and Ubuntu seemingly breaks: the headphones don't play any sound
anymore. re-pairing fails and restarting the headphones doesn't fix the
issue. It seems bluetoothd crashed conmpletely since `bluetoothctl`
doesn't work anymore.. Restarting Ubuntu fixes the issue.

[Bug 1730343] Re: firmware update breaks Ubuntu

2017-11-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Can we please get this moving forward. Even more users have reported to
have killed their system with this bug, and we can expect many many more
who haven't reported it. Why is this still "triaged" for Xenial? Xenial
is the current LTS so the bug there affects 20x the amount of users as
artful and that's what Dell is currently shipping on their fwupd-enabled
laptops.

[Bug 1730343] Re: firmware update breaks Ubuntu

2017-11-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Just imagine what will happen if Dell releases a new firmware update for
one of their laptops... We've been lucky this hasn't happened yet, so
the only people running into this bug are people who have upgraded from
a version where fwupd wasn't enabled or new users.

2017-11-19 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
@joseph

I have not found a reliable way to replicate this bug so I cannot test
if it is still present in the latest upstream kernel.

I have attached the full syslog of multiple days + multiple crashes in
the second message in this thread. Does it give any hints as to how to
replicate this issue?

[Bug 1722176] Re: "Sorry something didn't work, snap not installed" when a snap package is removed

2017-11-13 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
This is what I did to reproduce the bug:

1. Open gnome software, search for rocketchat, install the desktop app.
2. close gnome software
3. open gnome software, search for rocketchat, remove the desktop app.

What happens: The snap gets removed correctly but you get the error
"sorry something went wrong, snap not installed".

[Bug 1731549] [NEW] search results don't show after installing/removing snap

2017-11-10 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Caution, this is a weird one.

Ubuntu 17.10

How to reproduce:

1. Open gnome software
2. Install or uninstall rocketchat
3. Close gnome software
4. Open gnome software
5. Search for libreoffice
- No search results are being displayed. Two ways to show the search results:
 a) go back to gnome software home page and search again -> search displays now
 b) click on another window (of another application) -> search results
appear as soon as you click.

2017-10-24 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Let's give this discussion another dimension. Non-persistent logging as
default made it impossible to debug a critical `fwupdate` bug where the
OS doesn't boot after a firmware update:
https://github.com/rhboot/fwupdate/issues/86

Please, please, just enable persistent logging by default. Systemd logs
a lot more than rsyslog and having at most 2x logs is a small price to
pay for the debug/support benefits.

[Bug 1719797] Re: Firmware update seemingly not working

2017-10-22 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
There seems to be two issues:

1. When clicking "update" on the firmware update, you do not get a
notification to restart the machine. I do get a notification if I click
the "Update All" button in the top-right corner.

2. After clicking "Update" but before the restart, the update re-appears
in the list of updates. This gives me the impression that the update
failed. I see two possible solutions: a) don't show the update after the
update process has started. b) change the "update" button to a "restart
to update" button that prompts to restart the machine on click.

Note that the issue with the Ubuntu dock only happens when you _drag_
the icon from the activities window to the doc. If you favorite the app
using right-click menu, then the icon is only added once.

Upstream Gnome explicitly disabled the Desktop. I don't think they'd be

[Bug 1720213] [NEW] Word moving with left-arrow-ctrl broken in wayland

2017-09-28 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 17.10, Wayland session.

In the terminal, the keycombination `ctrl-left-arrow` and `ctrl-right-
arrow` moves the cursor one word to the left and to the right. In Xorg
this works, no matter which key you press first (ctrl or arrow). In
wayland, you have to press the ctrl key first, otherwise, the cursor
will not move.

# How to reproduce:

type some words in gnome terminal press `left-arrow` key, wait for the
cursor to move and, and press `ctrl`.

# What happens

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and stops immediately
when you press `ctrl`.

# What should happen

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and starts moving one
word per "tick" when you press `ctrl`.

[Bug 1718942] Re: running favorited snap shows two icons in Ubuntu dock

2017-09-28 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
That makes sense.

I did some digging, `StartupWMClass` is a freedesktop standard [1], so
it seems a good DE-agnostic way to fix this issue.

The `BAMF_DESKTOP_FILE_HINT` isn't set by the app developer [2], it's
put there by snapd [3]. Thus, the correct place to fix this seems to be
that place; add another rewrite rule that adds
`StartupWMClass=` to the desktop file. What do you think of
this solution, @chipaca? [you seem the right person to ask this given
you wrote the BAMF code ;)].
