Re: mumble-server for Linux

Hello, first of all thank you very much for the mumble-server package. Are
there any plans to update mumble-server 1.3.4 to the latest version of mumble

I discussed this with the Debian maintainer last year. Unfortunately,
the way the code includes external projects makes packaging it
difficult, and upstream has enough trouble building the project for
Linux themselves.

I was able to take the snap package's recipe and use those dependencies
to build the Mumble client and Murmur server because I wanted stereo
sound support, although the same recipe wouldn't build the latest
version as a snap.  But I've never been very strong with Debian
packaging and I wasn't able to pull together diffs or anything like that
that would've been helpful to Debian.

Unless things change, there are probably no plans to updates Mumble in
Debian and Ubuntu soon.  It's more likely that the package gets removed
from the repositories.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Southern California Linux Expo 19x in July!

2022-06-27 Thread Nathan Haines

Hi everyone,

It's time to start wrapping up plans for SCALE this year.

We have a booth, we have a couple computers for the booth where we'll
demonstrate Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.  And I'll be there along with a couple
members of the Canonical Ubuntu Community Team helping out at times to
answer expo hall visitor questions.

But we need help from all of you.  There are a few ways you can help!

Can you help staff the booth and greet visitors and answer simple
questions about Ubuntu?  This is a big help!  Everyone has their own
areas of speciality, and you can always refer a visitor to another booth
volunteer if you get a question you don't know.  We have some
complimentary SCALE passes and will pay for your pass if you help out
for a couple hours.

Aside from desktops, I'm trying to get a Raspberry Pi 400 for the
booth.  Are there any particular features or uses of Ubuntu or its
flavors that you would like us to know about and highlight at the
booth?  Let me know!  We're always looking for fun facts about Ubuntu,
and you never know when someone might stop by who might ask if Ubuntu
can be used in that very same way.

It's exciting to have SCALE back again, and I'm excited that Ubuntu
California will be running the Ubuntu booth for the fourteenth SCALE in
a row!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) released

2022-04-21 Thread Nathan Haines

From: Łukasz 'si2100' Zemczak
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, codenamed “Jammy Jellyfish”, is here. This release
continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and
greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux
distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, together
with the community and our partners, to introduce new features and fix bugs.

Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS gains significant usability, battery and
performance

improvements with GNOME 42. It features GNOME power profiles and streamlined
workspace transitions alongside significant optimisations which can double
the desktop frame rate on Intel and Raspberry Pi graphics drivers.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is the first LTS release where the entire recent Raspberry
Pi device portfolio is supported, from the new Raspberry Pi Zero 2W to the
Raspberry Pi 4. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS adds Rust for memory-safe systems-level
programming. It also moves to OpenSSL v3, with new cryptographic algorithms
for elevated security.

For the fashion-conscious, Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS offers ten different
accent colours, applied to both the dark and light variants of the Yaru
theme, as well as the widest selection of community wallpapers to date.

The newest Ubuntu Budgie, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE,
UbuntuStudio, and Xubuntu are also being released today. More details
can be found for these at their individual release notes under the
Official Flavours section:

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/jammy-jellyfish-release-notes/

Maintenance updates will be provided for 5 years for Ubuntu Desktop,
Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud and Ubuntu Core. All the remaining flavours
will be supported for 3 years. Additional security support is available
with ESM (Extended Security Maintenance).

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the Beta release of the Ubuntu
22.04 LTS Desktop, Server, and Cloud products.

22.04 LTS, codenamed "Jammy Jellyfish", continues Ubuntu's proud tradition
of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at
work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

This Beta release includes images from not only the Ubuntu Desktop,
Server, and Cloud products, but also the Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu
Budgie, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu flavours.

The Beta images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper image
build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of
22.04 LTS that should be representative of the features intended to ship
with the final release expected on April 21st, 2022.

Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Cloud Images:
Jammy Beta includes updated versions of most of our core set of
packages, including a current 5.15 kernel, and much more.

To upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta from Ubuntu 21.10 or Ubuntu 20.04
LTS, follow these instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JammyUpgrades

The Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta images can be downloaded at:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/22.04/ (Ubuntu and Ubuntu Server on x86)

This Ubuntu Server image features the next generation Subiquity server
installer, bringing the comfortable live session and speedy install of
the Ubuntu Desktop to server users.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/22.04/beta/ (Non-x86)

As fixes will be included in new images between now and release, any
daily cloud image from today or later (i.e. a serial of 20220331 or
higher) should be considered a Beta image. Bugs found should be filed
against the appropriate packages or, failing that, the cloud-images
project in Launchpad.

Re: Change unattended-upgrades from Depends to Recommends on ubuntu-server-minimal

2022-01-14 Thread Nathan Haines
Since I don't have a clear point to reply to, I'll just delete the
message history rather than top-post.

I would simply like to interject that, all other things equal, a new LTS
is a fantastic time to change behavior, because it also offers a bright,
shining opportunity to document a change in behavior.

This opportunity remains whether we're looking at a substantive change
at 22.04 LTS or 22.10, but it's a lot easier to remember to document for
the upcoming LTS when it is imminent.  So, when deciding the best
practice for 22.04 LTS, be bold.

And now I leave the matter where it already was: in the hands of those
best suited to decide.

Regards,

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu California meeting on Sunday, December 19th, 2021 at 7pm PST.

2021-12-16 Thread Nathan Haines
Happy holidays to everyone!

It's December, and we're ending another year.

If you can make time among the merry-making, for a simple meeting on
December 19th at 7pm, let's take a look ahead at 2022.

I'm tentatively planning to run the Ubuntu booth at SCALE in March 2022,
depending on the state of current events, of course. Is anyone thinking
about attending SCALE next year?

Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS was pushed back two weeks until February 24th, 2022
to make plenty of time for Chinese New Year celebrations. Ubuntu 22.04
LTS, meanwhile, is proceeding as planned.

As always, you can join us on #ubuntu-us-ca on irc.libera.chat, and if
you don't already have a favorite IRC client installed on your computer,
you can join us here: https://web.libera.chat/?nick=webchat?#ubuntu-us-ca
Enjoy the rest of the week!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu California meeting tonight! 7pm

2021-11-21 Thread Nathan Haines

Hi all,

This week has flown by, my apologies, so let me make this casual.

We've got some fun things to chat about tonight.  SCALE 19x is going to
happen in March, and it'll be in person.  Should we be there?  Do we do
a conference track as well as a booth this year? Should we test the
waters a bit?

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is underway, and the OpenSSLv3 transition happens next
week.  PHP 8.1 happened a couple weeks ago.  GNOME 42 transition starts
in February with the beta.

There's plenty going on.  Let's chat about SCALE tonight at the
meeting.  If you can't make it to the meeting, well, a reply to this
mailing list is just as good!

As always, you can join us on #ubuntu-us-ca on irc.libera.chat, and if
you don't already have a favorite IRC client installed on your computer,
you can join us here: https://web.libera.chat/?nick=webchat?#ubuntu-us-ca

I hope everyone's had a nice weekend!  Have a great time with your
families and friends over Thanksgiving, and then you get to relax (and
sleep off the food!) over next weekend.  :)

Regards,

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Linux Upskill Challenge

2021-01-03 Thread Nathan Haines
Do you wish you knew what it took to run your very own Linux server?
Having fun with your Linux desktop, but ominously aware of a mystic
command-line world underneath it all? Well now's your chance to learn
more about it step by step over the next month, in small, bite-sized
chunks each work day.

Starting tomorrow, the Linux Upskill Challenge for January 2021 begins.
 And it repeats every month.

Simply visit https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxupskillchallenge/ to get started.

The course recommends you create a new server in the public cloud, to
get the full sense of working on a real, vulnerable server and the best
safety practices. If you wish to do that, DigitalOcean is a great place
to start, and this referral code will give you $100 of credit for 60
days. (The course only requires a basic $5 a month 'droplet'.)

https://m.do.co/c/5947abc3e193

Otherwise, on Ubuntu or any other distro that supports snaps, install
Multipass and create a distro with `multipass launch`

Or, grab an Ubuntu server install image from
http://releases.ubuntu.com/focal/ and use your favorite virtualization
software or older PC. Or use a Raspberry Pi or other architecture from
an image here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/releases/focal/release/

However you run an Ubuntu server, you'll be able to take a free,
four-week course on system administration that will give you the core
knowledge to run your own Linux server, and give you the opportunity to
discuss each day's lesson with others.

The course starts on Monday, January 4th, and each day's lesson is only
available for a couple of days, so if you're ready for a challenge or
just to refresh your skills, now's your chance!

Regards,
Nathan

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) released

2020-10-22 Thread Nathan Haines

 Forwarded Message
Subject: Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) released
Date: Thu, 22 Oct 2020 10:39:05 -0700
From: Brian Murray
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

Codenamed "Groovy Gorilla", 20.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of
integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at
work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

The Ubuntu kernel has been updated to the 5.8 based Linux kernel, and
our default toolchain has moved to gcc 10 with glibc 2.32. Additionally,
there is now a desktop variant of the Raspberry Pi image for Raspberry
Pi 4 4GB and 8GB.

Ubuntu Desktop 20.10 introduces GNOME 3.38, the fastest release yet with
significant performance improvements delivering a more responsive
Experience. Additionally, the desktop installer includes the ability to
connect to Active Directory domains.

Ubuntu Server 20.10 integrates recent innovations from key
virtualization and infrastructure projects like QEMU 5.0, libvirt 6.6
and OpenStack Victoria. Ubuntu Server now ships Telegraf, the metrics
collecting agent that together with Prometheus and Grafana form the
basis of a strong and reliable logging, monitoring and alerting solution
that can be deployed on Ubuntu systems.

The newest Ubuntu Budgie, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE,
Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu are also being released today. More details
can be found for these at their individual release notes under the
Official Flavours section:

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/groovy-gorilla-release-notes

Maintenance updates will be provided for 9 months for all flavours
releasing with 20.10.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu 18.10 is out, and some interesting user statistics...

2018-10-18 Thread Nathan Haines
Ubuntu 18.10 is out, and is supported until July 2019. With support for
TLS v1.3 in OpenSSL, Linux 4.18 with complete support for the Raspberry
Pi 3B and 3B+, and a ton of other nice improvements over 18.04's 4.15
kernel (watch for the HWE stack in Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS!), and enhanced
GNOME desktop support and a new community-contributed theme called
"Yaru," it's a big step forward for Ubuntu.

Since 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu users have been presented with the opportunity
to share some anonymous statistics about their hardware and their
installation choices with Canonical during new system installation. Now
that this long term support release has been out for 6 months, a summary
overview is available, with links to the reporting software and
explanations of the data collected. You can find this here:

https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/statistics

Happy upgrading for those of you who are tracking the interrim releases,
and for those of you who are sticking with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, remember
that the newest software in Ubuntu 18.10 and beyond--such as
LibreOffice, VLC, and more--is available to you as snap packages in the
Ubuntu Software store!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Meeting frequency

2018-08-22 Thread Nathan Haines

Hi team,

We've always operated the California LoCo with the idea that most things
are discussed via the mailing list and online IRC meetings were held in
real-time to sort of summarize and verify any consensus that had formed
when it came to making important decisions.

In the past few years, participation both on-list and on IRC has dropped
precipitously.

I'd like to bring this up for discussion. There are really two issues
at hand.

The first, is that meetings do take time and interfere with other plans.
Meetings haven't been well-attended for some time now, and I don't
think having meetings just to have them are very helpful. Would it be a
good idea to reduce meetings to monthly?

Second, of course, is that participation and activity are very low.
This is a global problem across the Ubuntu Local Community Team
landscape. But we shouldn't take it for granted, either. If there are
issues that need to be addressed, or improvements to be made, it's
important that I hear from you so that we can all work together to make
things better.

Let me know if there's anything that you think we could do to help make
the California team a more interesting thing to be involved in.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Confirmed! Microsoft Has Bought GitHub for $7.5 Billion | It's FOSS

2018-06-07 Thread Nathan Haines

On 06/07/2018 04:57 AM, Charlie wrote:

Confirmed! Microsoft Has Bought GitHub for $7.5 Billion | It's FOSS
I'm against this deal. I don't like a corporate giant jumping into our
open source community and exerting its influence with money. We of the
free and open source software community need to be alarmed by this and
if any of you have code on github, I'd suggest you put it somewhere
else. Linux is about being open source and FREE and I don't want
anything to do with Microsoft. Microsoft, as you all know, is all about
the money and their proprietary software that's weak and virus/malware
prone. Their closed environment philosophy is against what we stand for.
Mark my word, Microsoft WILL try to cash in on our hard work and make it
all about profit and take all the code internal and eschew open source
philosophies. If they don't, I'll eat my words.

It's hard to say just what the end result will be. Remember, Mark
Shuttleworth jumped into the Free and Open Source community 14 years
back, exerting his influence with money.

And before that, IBM jumped in, exerting their influence with money.
They're not the only ones. And Microsoft has been one of the top 5
contributors to the Linux kernel in the past few years as well.

Microsoft is bound by the same copyright laws as all of us, and cannot
just take random work and take the code internally unless the authors
expressly allowed it via software license. It's worth noting that the
first few "open source" experiments by Microsoft were released with a
custom license, and for the past few years they've used standard
licenses--even the GPLv2 for Linux kernel drivers.

Skepticism is always good, but it's also important to keep an open mind.

With Github, we see two things:

1. Github has always been proprietary and is not Free or Open Source
Software and never has been. It didn't have adequate funding and was
looking for a buyer for some time.

2. Microsoft is in a position to let Github do anything it wants because
the money involved is negligible. This is no guarantee but is more
positive than a lot of acquisitions.

Of course, Gitlab has been growing in popularity, but as is usual, the
competition should spur both services to make constant improvements. So
that's helping everyone, no matter which service they use.

(Meanwhile, I'm still happiest with bzr.)

Thanks, Kain! We can always use more volunteers up north. There used

As for SCALE, it's a really nice, friendly event that's well worth the

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu booth volunteers for SCALE urgently needed!

2018-02-25 Thread Nathan Haines

Hi everyone,

We usually get quite a few booth volunteers for SCALE, and what with
planning being delayed due to external behind-the-scenes issues and the
Ubuntu wiki being what it is, we only have one confirmed volunteer for
the Ubuntu booth. (Not counting me: the project page will be updated
tomorrow evening after I discuss scheduling with him.)

At this level of staffing, it is likely the booth may only be manned on
Saturday, which is bad since SCALE donates booth space to non-profit
organizations like Ubuntu, and if the booth isn't utilized they're
likely to give our space to someone else next year. (They're aware of
the behind-the-scenes stuff, but that's not a guarantee for next year.)

Volunteering is fun and easy, and we have free full-access SCALE passes
for the first couple of people who volunteer. We need more bodies to
stand in front of the booth and chat with visitors about Ubuntu. We'll
probably get lots of questions about Ubuntu, GNOME Shell, and snaps this
year.

Check the following page and see if you can make time to volunteer. We
especially need coverage for Friday night when I'm busy on stage for
UbuCon at SCALE, and Sunday morning:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Projects/Scale16x

If you can volunteer for a full shift, please register for SCALE and
email me privately with your registration number and email address. We
have fewer passes than usual this year, so it's first-come, first-serve.

Regards,
Nathan

[Ubuntu-US-CA] There may be an open speaking slot at UbuCon at SCALE this year...

We're busy finalizing our UbuCon schedule, and while we wait for the
last of our speakers to confirm their availability, we would like to
have a backup in case we need to change our plans.

If you would like to give a standard format, 40-minute presentation at
UbuCon at SCALE, feel free to send me an email with the pertinent
information.

UbuCon attendees reflect the wide range of the Ubuntu community, from
enthusiasts to professionals. The talk should be about Ubuntu or about
something that was enabled by Ubuntu, and can fall along any level of
technicality.

If you are available to speak on either Thursday, March 8th or Friday,
March 9th, please email me with a talk title and a one-paragraph summary
of your topic. We'll get in touch with you late next week if we can use
your talk.

Feel free to pass this offer along to others who may be interested.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Introducing the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase for 18.04

2018-01-15 Thread Nathan Haines
The Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase is starting for the 18.04 cycle. We're
looking for wallpapers, videos, and music to include with the default
release of Ubuntu.

Long-term support releases like Ubuntu 18.04 LTS are very important,
because they are downloaded and installed *ten times more often* than
every single interim release combined.  That means that the wallpapers,
video, and music that are shipped will be seen ten times more than in
other releases.

Ubuntu enthusiasts, please spread the word about the contest as far and
wide as you can! By getting the word out to various forums and groups,
we can increase the number of submissions dramatically, and spread
knowledge about Ubuntu in a fun and unique way.

The submission period runs through March 15, 2018.  The winners will be
featured in the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS release this April.

More information is available on the Ubuntu Community Hub:

https://community.ubuntu.com/t/introducing-the-ubuntu-free-culture-show
case-for-18-04/)

[Bug 1719706] Re: Mouse scrollwheel switches workspaces when mouse against the left edge of screen

2017-10-01 Thread Nathan Haines
Right. At the Ubuntu Rally in NYC, everyone seemed to think that it was
nice to have a quick way to switch resources, but that the entire left
edge of the screen triggering this behavior (even when specific icons
were highlighted) was non-intuitive.

It is not inappropriate to let someone know that he is acting in a way

These mailing lists are for text discussion, not promotion of his social

Empty emails with blind links to videos or social media with no context

No one "signs" to the contest, there's a function of Flickr groups that
must be read and clicked-through before joining the group and submitting
images, although it's clear that nobody actually does this, and there is
no way to "sign" anything. On top of that, Flickr already gives a
specific set of licenses: None, Public Domain, CC-BY v2, CC-BY-NC v2,
CC-BY-SA v2, and CC-BY-NC-SA v2.

The only way we could distribute the images under a different license is
if the authors stated the license in the description or something.

[Bug 1595017] Re: u-wallpapers include Creative Commons v2 licenses which are controversial

2017-03-28 Thread Nathan Haines
I'm not sure I've seen that wiki page before (or long enough ago that
I've forgotten it), so thank you for that! It should be linked from the
FreeCultureShowcase page for sure.

I don't mind CC-* 3.0, (I'm actually all for 4.0!) but we use Yahoo to
gather photos, and Yahoo specifically references CC-BY 2.0 and CC-BY-SA
2.0, so it's not possible to get differently licensed photos that way.
We could ask photographers to place an alternate license in the photo
description, but I'm concerned that most submitters aren't reading the
licensing guidelines in the first place before submitting. Almost all
of the maintenance work each cycle during the contest is checking every
entry by hand for proper licensing.

On the other hand, I have a very detailed, modular form letter
explaining licenses that--to my surprise--has only been met with
appreciation. So maybe we could require an explicit license. But it
will probably triple the amount of work required in administering the
contest.

[Bug 1676133] Re: Ubuntu 17.04 Free Culture Showcase community wallpapers

2017-03-28 Thread Nathan Haines
Thanks, Iain! I did a revert and pull from my branch and reapplied my
changes before uploading, and must've missed debian/ubuntu-wallpapers-
zesty.install somehow (because I have the file right here!) but forgot
to update debian/control again. I'll stick that in my documentation,
thanks!

I don't mind CC-* 3.0, (I'm all for 4.0!) but Yahoo specifically
references 2.0, and I'm concerned that most submitters aren't reading
the licensing guidelines in the first place before submitting. I'll
give this a think before the next contest.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Proposed amendment to the Ubuntu California leadership document.

2017-02-15 Thread Nathan Haines

Hello everyone,

In our first meeting of the year, we came together in IRC to decide what
to do about flagging participation and the failure to attract enough
volunteers to lead the Ubuntu California team on a 3-person leadership
council.

It was the consensus that between the limited role of leadership and
dropping levels of active participation that a leadership council, put
in place by the Ubuntu LoCo Council several years ago, was
overengineered, no matter how well-intentioned. This council is defined
in the Ubuntu California leadership document, available here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NathanHaines/CaliforniaLeadershipDocument

I was given an action item to revise the leadership document to bring it
in line with a single leader position. I did this with minimal updates
to the document, which was not seen as flawed. The proposed changes can
be seen here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NathanHaines/CaliforniaLeadershipDocument

While I find the wiki's diff between the two documents is less than
clear, all changes from the current document are documented here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NathanHaines/CaliforniaLeadershipDocument?action=diff=2=1

It is my hope that this proposed amendment to the Ubuntu California
leadership document can be the starting point for a lighter leadership
role and allow for greater participation in the LoCo and its goal of
Ubuntu advocacy.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Want your photo to be featured in the next version of Ubuntu?

2017-01-28 Thread Nathan Haines
Ubuntu 17.04 is really taking shape, and we're going to be looking for
the next community-contributed wallpapers! If you're a photographer or
illustrator who uses the Creative Commons licenses, you can submit your
images to Flickr, where they'll be voted on by Ubuntu community members
and the Canonical design team, and 10 photos and 2 illustrations will be
shipped as part of Ubuntu 17.04's default wallpapers.

The submission period runs through March 5th to work around SCALE and
hopefully still make it in time for the zesty User Interface Freeze.

This is a great way to contribute to Ubuntu, so I hope you'll tell all
your artist friends. You can find the official announcement and links

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu California meeting on Sunday, January 22nd, at 7pm PST

2017-01-22 Thread Nathan Haines

On 01/21/2017 01:18 PM, George Mulak wrote:

Hi!
I would like to talk about SCaLE 15X and coordinating it.

Hi George!

All good questions.

I submitted a community funds donation request a couple of days ago, and
I will get a list of other booth supplies needed to Michael Hall in the
next day or two so he can coordinate getting Ubuntu computers from
certain sponsors to SCALE for the Ubuntu booth. This should look more
or less like the booth did last year.

Incidentally, this kind of logistical assistance from Canonical is
almost completely invisible because it overlaps what we've done for
ourselves in the past. But the burden this lifts from my shoulders and
Richard Gaskin's shoulders is immeasurable. It's not exactly difficult
work, but it frees us up to look at big picture stuff and talk out
little details while not having to be the ones to implement them.

Plus, they have a lot of institutional knowledge because they've been to
many conferences and organized more booths than we have. So while
UbuCon Summit at SCALE is very different in a lot of ways from what
UbuCon Europe was in Essen, Germany this last year (and I was so jealous
of what they accomplished!) we have a team of people who are helping to
make both events 1) awesome and 2) uniquely special.

For instance, while Richard was instrumental in talking to business
owners on the ground and finding who was interested in serving as social
event venues, Canonical took care of sponsorship and payment and that
sort of coordination.

I would also like to talk about Ubucon. Who is going to be there, etc.

EVERYONE is going to be there! ;) We had a pretty big turnout last
time. I don't remember the exact numbers. I'll have to see if I can
dig them up. As far as speakers, we have a keynote speaker and
Canonical will be coordinating with that sponsor to make the
announcement on our social media and their social media at the same
time. When it's announced, you'll know. We're also looking for more
community speakers via the SCALE CFP form.

https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/15x/cfp

I would like to know what has already been done, etc.

Richard and I are working together with Ilan from SCALE and Michael Hall
and Alan Pope from the Canonical Ubuntu Community Team to reach out to
keynote speakers and sponsors, aside from the call for papers we
currently have active. The hope is to have the ubucon.org site up and
ready by February 1st. Anything I don't manage to do, Michael Hall will
probably do.

The booth is pretty much on auto-pilot. This will be our tenth year at
SCALE and the booth has always been a success. I'll be handling all of
the logistics of getting supplies, but I have a big box full of stuff in
the closet that's been built over the last couple of years, and
Canonical will wrangle the display systems (other than the one you can
provide, George). What we need most are volunteers to man the booth,
and that's something I don't worry about because year after year we have
volunteers from California and neighboring LoCos who volunteer their
time and are just awesome. Plus, any employees that Canonical sends
like to come and hang out, too, aside from their domain expertise, we
have really good gap coverage for our volunteer team.

To my extreme gratitude, I've never had to worry about booth volunteers.
The Ubuntu community in California has never failed me over the last
decade.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: [SCALE 15X] Expo Pass, hotel discounts end soon!

2017-01-20 Thread Nathan Haines

Do be sure to use coupon code "UBNTU" for 50% your full expo pass! :)

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [SCALE 15X] Expo Pass, hotel discounts end soon!
Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2017 16:41:49 +
From: i...@socallinuxexpo.org
To: nat...@nhaines.com

Though it may not be the most appealing of the wise old sayings, the
rhetorical early bird does end up with the proverbial worm.
That said, the SCALE 15X “Early Bird” discount for the
first-of-the-year North American Linux/FOSS expo ends in four days, on Jan.
22.

Also, you may want to act quickly in making your hotel reservations at the
discount rates offered by both the Sheraton and Hilton hotels in Pasadena
soon, because both hotels will be closing down the discount rates on Feb.
8.

Currently, the cost of a Full Expo Pass for SCALE 15X is $75, and can be
purchased by visiting the SCALE site at
https://register.socallinuxexpo.org/reg6/

Procrastination? That will cost you a Hamilton, as prices go up $10 to $85
for a Full Expo Pass on Jan. 23. But that pales in comparison to the
difference in price you’ll pay for not reserving a hotel room before Feb.
8.

As far as lodging goes, both the Sheraton and Hilton hotels in Pasadena are
offering SCALE 15X discount rates of $169/night plus tax. Both hotels are
within walking distance of the Pasadena Convention Center.

For more information on how to make reservations at either hotel, visit the
SCALE 15X Hotel Information page at
https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/15x/hotel-information

To recap: The discount rate for the Expo Passes closes in four days, on
Jan. 22, and the aforementioned hotels curtail offering a SCALE 15X
discount on Feb. 8.
SCALE 15X, the 15th Annual Southern California Linux Expo, is the largest
community-run Linux/FOSS showcase event in North America. It will be held
from March 2-5 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California.
For more information on the expo, visit https://www.socallinuxexpo.org

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Call for Ubuntu California LoCo Team leadership nominations

2017-01-02 Thread Nathan Haines

Hello again Ubuntu California,

I'd like to wish everyone a happy new year! There are some really fun
opportunities for Ubuntu advocacy planned for 2017 and I look forward to
working with all of you to make them a success!

There was a lack of nominations for the Ubuntu California leadership
board, and with only one nomination, there has as yet been no vote.

Our next LoCo meeting is this Sunday, January 8th, and I have added an
agenda item to discuss how we want to move forward from here. The
meeting agenda is available here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Meetings/17January08

Please feel free to discuss this on-list, and we can meet on Sunday to
plan a path forward this year.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Call for Ubuntu California LoCo Team leadership nominations

2016-12-07 Thread Nathan Haines

Hello everyone,

It's time once again for the Ubuntu California leadership election. All
three leadership positions are up for election. The rest of this email
has more information on the election, but in short: please send emails
nominating yourself or other people as replies to this email or add
them to the nominations wiki page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Leadership/2016

If you have questions, please read the leadership document:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Leadership

... and post follow up questions as replies to this email, or contact
me privately.

Voting will begin in 11 days, see below for details. The voting period
is twice as long as usual to compensate for it occurring across multiple
major holidays.

=== Timeline ===

* Nomination period begins: now (2016-12-07)
* Nomination period ends: in 10 days (2016-12-17)
* Election begins: in 11 days (2016-12-18)
* Election ends: in 24 days (2016-12-31)
* Result announced: in 26 days (2017-01-02)

If there are not enough candidates to fill all positions (plus
preferably additional people so there's a useful election), this
timeline is likely to change.

=== Constituency ===

All members of the Launchpad group at
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-california are eligible to run and vote
in this election.

=== Position ===

Ubuntu California has a three-person leadership team who make
decisions about issues that cannot be decided by consensus. This
position is required by our leadership document, and helps to prevent
prolonged arguing and indecision.

Team leaders tend to chair our IRC meetings and take point on event
logistics, though this is not an "official" role and we encourage
other people to get involved in these tasks.

This position is separate from the position of LoCo Group Contact,
which does not expire and is chosen through our normal decision making
processes rather than an election.

=== Nominations ===

Please add nominations of yourself and/or other people to the wiki page at:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Leadership/2016

You can instead nominate on the mailing list if you'd prefer, and I
will add the relevant details to the wiki page for you.

Nominees must confirm that they accept their nomination. They can
proactively do this by contacting me, and I will contact anyone who
doesn't do so to confirm.

=== Voting ===

Once nominations have been confirmed, I will create a poll on
http://civs.cs.cornell.edu/ . Your ballot will be emailed to the
public email address associated with your Launchpad account. If you do
not receive a ballot within a day or so of the election starting,
please contact me and let me know.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to
contact me. Since our next meeting on December 11th falls conveniently
within the nomination period, I will also reserve some time there for
final discussion.

Hi everyone,

Feel free to add additional items to the meeting page on the Ubuntu

[Bug 1505970] Re: [Icons] Web Browser icon is not distinctive to the Ubuntu brand

2016-06-08 Thread Nathan Haines
Oliver, I'm not sure that an opinion column written about this bug is
relevant here. We don't want to do what the "media" think is a good
option, we want to do what's best for the Ubuntu Browser project.

[Bug 1581713] Re: Ubuntu Software asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account to remove a snap

2016-05-23 Thread Nathan Haines
This behavior is consistent with Ubuntu Software Centre. Canonical
works with third-party software providers to provide payment and hosting
for commericial software in the partner repository. In Ubuntu 16.04
LTS, this is being replaced by the Ubuntu App Store which powers the
snap repository's backend.

While the command line tools provide access to free-of-charge snaps
without issue, the Ubuntu Software store uses Ubuntu One to handle
payment processing and order history (so that previous purchases can be
downloaded and installed on any number of systems that you own).

So this is an implementation detail that matches the behavior of the
software being replaced by Ubuntu Software.
