[Bug 1906617] Re: Anacron prevents shutdown while a job is running. Some packages install long-running jobs.

2024-05-18 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Some more research shows that the reason 90 seconds is no longer enough
is
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/anacron/-/commit/e83000966d446830ad93eef7af2c5ea62efe01db,
which has set TimeoutStopSec=infinity for anacron. This decision was
made in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=915379, and
they seem to find it appropriate for desktops... I tend to disagree, for
the ssame reasons as the original bug reporter.

2024-05-18 Thread Ohad Lutzky
I am encountering a similar issue on 23.10 (!) - however, for me even
waiting 90 seconds doesn't seem to be enough, and I eventually end up
hitting Alt+SysRq+RSEIUB.

[Bug 1959527] Re: Behringer UMC22 lost capture support

2022-01-31 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Workaround: Comment out the following line:

ATTRS{idVendor}=="08bb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2902",
ENV{ACP_PROFILE_SET}="behringer-umc22.conf"

...wherever it appears in /lib/udev/rules.d. For me this is in
90-{pipewire-alsa,pulseaudio}.rules.

I don't understand why this workaround helps. I found it here:

[Bug 1959527] [NEW] Behringer UMC22 lost capture support

2022-01-30 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: 21.10
alsa-base version: 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu7
Kernel version: 5.13.0-27-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 12 17:36:47 UTC 2022
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have a Behringer U-Phoria UMC22 USB audio device, which in previous
versions of Ubuntu correctly supports both output and capture. Upon
upgrading to 21.10, it has lost capture support. The hardware itself
still captures correctly, verified on a ChromeOS device.

The result of running alsa-info is here: http://alsa-
project.org/db/?f=29a30af604267a2dc591610d06fce3175b379b86

The relevant device is "USB Audio CODEC" (this is how it was identified
in previous versions of Ubuntu as well, as well as ChromeOS). Indeed,
under "Mixer controls for card CODEC", there is no capture channel.

Indeed, Settings->Sound doesn't show this device as an input option. It
works fine as an output option. I would expect this to show up as an
input option, as it did with previous versions of ubuntu.

[Bug 1945871] [NEW] Right-clicking in Chrome's "Save As" dialog crashes xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

2021-10-02 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 21.04
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk version: 1.8.0-1
google-chrome-stable version: 94.0.4606.61-1

Reproduction:

1. Open Google Chrome - this has been occurring for several months, so
different versions, but currently the one I have installed is: 94.0.4606.61
(Official Build) (64-bit)
2. Right-click on any page, click "Save As" (or download a file, which opens
the same dialog)

Expected behavior: A context menu with items such as "Open With File Manager",
"Rename", etc.
Actual behavior: "Save As" dialog is closed, and apport is triggered for
/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-gtk (I *think* I attached a stack trace here).

Other apps (firefox, gedit) work as expected here, the problem appears
specific to Chrome - but Chrome isn't crashing - xdg-desktop-portal-gtk
is. Therefore I'm starting by filing a bug report here.

Unfortunately Chrome isn't reporting anything to stdout/stderr about
this (only some unrelated messages about bluetooth).

Note: I've attached /var/crash/_usr_libexec_xdg-desktop-portal-
gtk.1000.crash. However, /var/crash/_usr_libexec_xdg-desktop-portal-
gtk.1000.uploaded exists, with contents
68511cc2-2374-11ec-b3f5-fa163e6cac46. I don't see that this actually
opened a bug anywhere though.

[Bug 1307545] Re: Power Manager settings are ignored when closing laptop lid

Still occurring on 20.04.1 LTS. Laptop (Lenovo E490) has power
connected, lid is closed, Automatic suspend when plugged in is disabled;
still suspends after a while. I'll now try messing with logind.conf and
see if I can get it to behave the way I want.

[Bug 1025388] Re: Internal mic stops working when plugging in headphones

2020-05-07 Thread Ohad Lutzky
I've run the apport command because the bug seemed abandoned, but I
exhibit the exact same symptoms. This is a Lenovo E490, my headphones
use a TRS plug, but the system detects it as TRRS (i.e. believes it also
has a microphone). To confirm, I've also checked:

* Headphones with a TRRS cable behave correctly on this machine (their
microphone is used)
* My same TRS headphones (no microphone), on a Chromebook, have the plug
detected correctly as TRS, and the Chromebook uses its internal microphone
while sending audio to the headphones.

There does not appear to be a way, in Linux, to configure the system to
use the internal microphone while anything is plugged into the headphone
jack.

[Bug 1872001] Re: 5.3.0-46-generic - i915 - frequent GPU hangs / resets rcs0

2020-04-13 Thread Ohad Lutzky
FWIW, I'm experiencing very similar symptoms on the same kernel
(5.3.0-46-generic), but on different hardware: This is a Lenovo ThinkPad E490.
One thing that makes it *much* more frequent is running jackd with realtime
priority. Running with ardour and jack, during the freezes audio proceeds
normally (even MIDI events and synths work fine), but keyboard, mouse and
monitor freeze. This occurs about once a minute!
I've also experienced longer crashes (gave up and rebooted after a minute) when
performing skype calls or just watching youtube, but those are far less
frequent.

[Bug 1234458] Re: Indicator stuck on mouse icon, along with estimating...

2013-10-20 Thread Ohad Lutzky
After a little research, here's what I think is going on: The power
level information from Logitech mice (using HID++) has very low
resolution, as can be seen in hidpp-device.c from the upower package:
Power level will always be reported as one of [5, 20, 55, 90]. Power
drain rate (in watts) is not reported, so I assume the power indicator
is trying to figure out how long the battery will last just by taking
the differential of the power level. Since this never changes (until it
drops by a whole level), the estimate is always infinity.

The solution should be to modify the estimation algorithm so that if it
fails to estimate within 1 minute or so, it just reports the power rate
(55% in your case).

[Bug 890781] Re: urlsnarff segfault

2011-12-04 Thread Ohad Lutzky
This is solved in 2.4b1+debian-21.1 (upstream, pangolin). The package is
nearly identical, and urlsnarf is seriously broken in debian-21.
Recommend backporting.

(The bug is that the pcap-file and live-capture logic are reversed, so
running a live-capture looks for a pcap file and crashes, and using a
pcap file tries to do a live capture).

[Bug 735171] Re: driver ath9k is too slow or not responding

2011-04-09 Thread Ohad Lutzky
I've reverted to the ubuntu-included ath9k module, and it works just as
well - providing that you reload it on suspend, as I've explained
earlier. However, this sometimes causes suspend to take a long time, as
the module is perceived as in use for several more seconds (~10
seconds)

[Bug 504958] Re: error button trackpad

2011-04-06 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Hello, this affects me as well. I don't understand why this was marked
as incomplete. Also, older solution for this issue rely on hal
configuration, which is irrelevant in maverick. There is no decent way
to configure this which I can find, and the synclient settings are
reverted or suspend (as well as on logout or reboot).

2011-04-05 Thread Ohad Lutzky
This seems to happen again upon resuming from suspend (checked using scp from
my other machine again), until the ath9k module is reloaded. Here's a
workaround: Create a file /etc/pm/config.d/modules, chmod +x it, and have it
contain the following line:
SUSPEND_MODULES=ath9k

[Bug 735171] Re: driver ath9k is too slow or not responding

2011-04-03 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Hello, I'm quite glad I found this bug report. Compiling compat-wireless
is very easy (nice scriptwork there!), and made a major improvement:
Running an scp from a different (also wireless) machine on my network
used to work at 15kB/s. Now it's around 300kB/s, which makes much more
sense. Also, browsing websites (especially image-heavy ones) has become
much smoother; it used to be quite choppy.

Why is this incomplete? I now have an i876 phone myself and have the

on a clean Windows 7 install with no motorola-specific drivers, so this
should be a generic USB Mass Storage device.

Re: [Bug 205018] Re: Hardy - Doesn't detect Firefox 3.0 for web searches and bookmarks

2009-01-03 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Well, History and Bookmarks have been joined together in Firefox 3 - the
only difference between a history item and a bookmark seems to be an extra
flag on the bookmark. Splitting this functionality would create code
duplication. Also, implementing searches engines will probably be very
similar as well. Since we copy the sqlite database over (the copy in use by
firefox is always locked), splitting into multiple modules means additional
overhead as well.
Would it be OK if one module contains all three functions, but has
configuration options to disable them? (Under 'More...')

On Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 7:42 PM, Sebastian Pölsterl s...@k-d-w.org
wrote:

I tried out the latest version and I must say it works great.

However, I was wondering if it was possible to split the module in 3
modules like the FF2 version? One for querying bookmarks, one for
querying history, and one for querying search engines. Search engines
doesn't seem to get retrieved at all at the moment. In addition, if I
tagged a bookmark I can't use e.g. google search me to do a Google
 search (see BrowserSmartMatch).

Once those issues are fixed I'd love to include it.

I think Ohad's solution is pretty much as clean as one can hope for

On my system the places db is about 1mb and I clean my data almost
daily. Moreover as far as I can see the db is updated each time I change
a page in firefox. This will not be good for battery powered laptops...

I may be mistaken though. If the database doesn't update as often as I
assume (fx. maybe only when I actively change something in the
bookmarks), then it is not really a problem as I see it.

While the DB-copying solution is not optimal (it would be best if
Firefox just wouldn't request an exclusive lock - sqlite supports
one-writer-many-readers), it's less damaging than you think: The DB is
copied only upon searching, when you probably have enough hard-drive
activity going on to make reading a 1MB file pretty insignificant.
Even then, it only occurs if the DB has changed, so multiple searches
in a row should rarely ever copy the DB twice.
What does worry me is if the DB becomes large enough to make storage
of the duplicate copy a concern (say, on an EEE or XO laptop).

I'm hoping this is a minor change to make in firefox, and I'll try to
investigate the issue.

future deskbar should be able to adapt without huge changes.

Srdan: While it appears that this workaround can make the old extension
work without a FF downgrade I am still much in favor as Ohad's module as
it stands since it will work without the user tweaking FF.

[Bug 196846] Re: gitk requires wish8.5 but depends on tk8.4

2008-04-22 Thread Ohad Lutzky
The fix is suboptimal, as wish8.5 can be installed (part of tk8.5, which
is available in hardy), and shows antialiased fonts. The best option IMO
would be the one currently in git (the git repository of gitk, that is),
which is to leave it at /usr/bin/wish and let people choose with update-
alternatives.

[Bug 159356] System freeze on high memory usage

2007-11-01 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

I run a batch matlab job server here at my lab, running Dapper 6.06 (for the
LTS). One of the users has submitted a very memory-consuming job, which
successfully crashes the server. Upon closer inspection, the crash happens like
this:
1. I run matlab with the given file (as an ordinary, unpriveleged user)
2. RAM usage quickly fills up
3. Once the RAM meter hits 100%, the system freezes: All SSH connections freeze
up, and while switching VTs directly on the machine works, no new processes run
- so one can't log in, or do anything if he is logged in. (Sometimes typing
doesn't work at all)

Note that the swap - while 7 gigs of it are available - is never used.
(The machine has 7 gigs of RAM as well)

I've tried the same on my Gutsy 32-bit box, and there was no system
freezeup - matlab simply notified that the system was out of memory.
However, it did this once memory was 100% in use - and still, swap
didn't get used at all! (Though it is mounted correctly and shows up in
top and free).

So first thing's first - I'd like to eliminate the crash issue. I suppose I
could switch the server to 32-bit, but I think that would be a performance
loss, considering that it does a lot of heavy computation. There is no reason,
however, that this should happen on a 64-bit machine anyway. Why does it?
The second concerning thing is swap - how come it doesn't get used?

[Bug 97010] Re: Gaim always crashes with Off-The-Record Messaging plugin

2007-09-19 Thread Ohad Lutzky
It's not a crash... Gaim just needs some randomness from the system pool to
generate the key. Mashing the keyboard and moving the mouse around helps.
(IIRC, gpg tells you to do this when creating a key)
It's a shame that this isn't done in a separate threads, so GUI updates take
place.

[Bug 112009] NetworkManager does not set channel when creating ad-hoc network

2007-05-03 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm trying to use NetworkManager to create an ad-hoc network with my
ipw2200. The following manual method works:

sudo iwconfig eth1 essid mynetwork channel 11 mode ad-hoc

(That is, the laptop next to me will then see the network)

However, when trying to do that with NetworkManager's create wireless
network, the laptop next to me
will not see the network. Checking iwconfig shows that the essid and mode were
set properly - but unfortunately, one can't tell using iwconfig whether a
channel was set. However, running

sudo iwconfig eth1 channel 11

aftwards fixes the problem. NM should do this automatically.

[Bug 108955] No easy way to reconfigure grub

2007-04-22 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

There is currently no easy way to change the default booted operating
system, nor an easy way to change the timeout for this selection.
Consider the following UC:

Erwin has just installed Ubuntu, as a friend recommended. For now, he
intends to keep working with Windows as his primary operating system
(perhaps even other members of his family are using Windows). Thus, he
wants the default OS booted to be Windows. He asks on the forums, and
probably receives the following answer:

Hit Alt+F2, type gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst, and edit that file -
it's mostly self-explanatory. Change the value 'default', the titles are
zero-indexed.

This is a confusing task, even for an experienced Linux user (mostly
counting the titles), and a graphical interface could really help new
users with this task.

[Bug 49876] Re: Clicking Synchronize Now in Time and Date Settings causes ubuntu to stop responding

2007-01-07 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Confirming this bug. I am running only Openbox, and setting the date
even a couple of seconds back instantly causes the described
unresponsiveness (mouse moves, applications update the screen normally,
but clicks and keys do nothing). There is a way to avoid the power-
cycle:

Hit Alt+SysRq+R, then Alt+F1. (SysRq is usually the same as PrintScreen,
Alt+SysRq+R gives Linux raw control of the keyboard, which takes it away
from X)

This is a really annoying bug... my system clock changes every time I
wake up my computer from sleep (system clock syncs with hardware clock).

[Bug 66623] Re: warning: GRClosure invoking callback: already destroyed

2006-10-29 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Confirmed again. However, this doesn't seem to show up with
libglade2-ruby's examples (in /usr/share/doc).

It might have something to do with these though:

/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/glib2.rb: line 55
  GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion
`g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/glib2.rb: line 55
  GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:g_param_spec_boxed: assertion
`G_TYPE_IS_BOXED (boxed_type)' failed
  GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:g_object_class_install_property: assertion
`G_IS_PARAM_SPEC (pspec)' failed
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/glib2.rb: line 55

[Bug 68657] Code to help many laptops (including R50e) resume for suspend

2006-10-27 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Public bug reported:

In order to get my R50e (and a friend's laptop, some sort of old
HP/Dell) to resume from suspend properly, one needs to:

1. Disable DRI in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. Make sure that the 'hibernate' script is not installed (overrides
acpi-support)
3. Install the attached files:

99-r50e-suspend.sh in /etc/acpi/suspend.d
01-r50e-resume.sh in /etc/acpi/resume.d
