[Bug 890705] Re: temp file links left in /tmp to ppd file in /etc/cups after printing

2014-11-29 Thread Ray DeCampo
I had the same thing as Marcel noted in comment #8. My /tmp directory
was filled with links to a ppd file under /etc/cups. I had to reboot in
recovery mode to remove them. There were more a million, there were at
least one link for every 13-digit hexademical number starting with the
same 6 digits so at least 2^28, or approximately a quarter of a billion.
I had to create a script to delete them because it was too many
arguments for rm to handle.

[Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2014-09-12 Thread Ray DeCampo
I experience this issue on a single-screen environment; however, we
frequently have multiple users logged in and so are using multiple
virtual terminals. Sometimes it is possible to switch another VT and
have that user log out and that alleviates the issue.

[Bug 1363557] [NEW] Password textfield missing when unlocking

2014-08-30 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

Intermittently the password textfield will be completely missing from
the unlock screen. The user's name appears and the background graphic
which usually surrounds the textfield is present, but the textfield
itself is missing. This typically happens when multiple users are
logged into the computer. Unfortunately I do not have reliable steps to
repeat the problem.

There are a number of workarounds. Sometimes I can use ctrl-alt-f7 or
-f8 to switch to another user, log that user out and get to the log in
screen with all the users listed. Then the original user can log in.
Sometimes it is necessary to switch to ctrl-alt-f1 and restart lightdm.
Sometimes I need to log into the machine remotely and restart lightdm.
Sometimes all of these fail and it is necessary to restart the computer.

If there is something I could do to gather more information the next the
computer is in this state, I would be happy to do so. Unfortunately I
cannot run ubuntu-bug while the problem is exhibited, as there is no
access to the GUI.

[Bug 1341350] [NEW] Additional DNS servers, search domains settings not honored

2014-07-13 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

3) What you expected to happen

The 'Additional DNS servers' and 'Additional search domains' settings
would be respected when the 'Use connection for resources only on this
resource' checkbox is checked.

4) What happened instead

When configuring a PPTP VPN, on the IPv4 settings tab, set the
'Additional DNS servers' to the IP address of the VPN DNS server; the
'Additional search domains' to the domain suffix of of the VPN
respectively. Furthermore hit the 'Routes' button and select the 'Use
connection for resources only on this resource' checkbox. Furthermore
set up a route for the VPN.

Once connected to the network, attempts to resolve names on the network
failed. The same configuration without the above settings works to
resolve names, however all network traffic is funneled through the VPN.
If names are resolved using the command line utility dig and specifiying
the DNS server, it works as expected.

[Bug 1338174] [NEW] Update manager unavailable to second user in multiple user scenario

2014-07-05 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

Describe what happened:

I have a system with two users (bob and alice) granted administrator
privileges. Both users are typically logged in, using 'switch user' to
change between them. The update manager will indicate to user bob that
updates are available, but bob ignores the dialog. When alice switches
to her desktop, there is an active app on the unity bar for 'Software
Updater'. The shortcut is not responsive to clicking or middle-
clicking. Running 'update-manager' from the command line has no effect
as well.

What you expect:

The 'Software Updater' app should be responsive for alice allowing her
to install the updates.

[Bug 1338175] [NEW] Spurious 'Invalid password' message when switching users

3) What you expected to happen

When switching users and entering the correct password no 'Invalid
password' message should be displayed.

4) What happened instead

When switching from one user to another after entering the password, I
intermittently (although more often than not) get the 'Invalid password'
message briefly before being taken to the desktop. Just to clarify, the
correct password is being entered and the user is being taken to the
desktop so this is really just an inconvenience.

Also, I noticed that it is no longer possible to use the keyboard
sequence Alt+W when the lock screen is on to switch users since
upgrading to 14.04 - there doesn't seem to be a way to switch users
using the keyboard from the lock screen in 14.04. Not sure what the
proper channel is to address this.

[Bug 1263326] Re: #VALUE doesn't propagate correctly subtracting text from numbers

2013-12-22 Thread Ray DeCampo
Further research reveals the issue is with formatting, in particular
borders, affecting the value of cells. I will attach a new spreadsheet
demonstrating the issue. I have also filed a bug at LibreOffice:

https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=72969

Steps to reproduce:

See attached spreadsheet (bug-format-affects-value.ods). The first line
has no formatting and behaves as expected. The second line has a border
on cell B2 and the value of that cell is affected.

Current behavior:

Cell C2 displays the value Failed.
If the value of cell B2 is copied and pasted as text the value pasted is
foobar .

Expected behavior:

Cell C2 displays the value Passed like the cell C1.
If the value of cell B2 is copied and pasted as text the value pasted is
foobar.

[Bug 1263326] [NEW] Formula values not updated automatically

2013-12-21 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

I am planning on attaching an example spreadsheet which demonstrates the
issue. The example spreadsheet is a checkbook where the account is
split into three categories. Then there is a 'Total' category which is
the sum of the transactions in the other categories. The idea is to
have virtual subaccounts in the checkbook. When you open the example
you will see that cells H6 and I6 are not being calculated and display
#VALUE instead. However, if you do something which causes Calc to re-
calculate the cells, the value will display fine. For example if you
sort the rows based on the date column. Another trigger is to re-copy
the formulas for D6 and E6 by selecting D5 and E5 and pulling the
formula down. The issue can be reproduced by entering another line in
the checkbook (all the formulas are already entered through row 1000).
Entering the date in A6 causes the formulas to become live.

There is a further issue with this spreadsheet in column F. Column F is
an indicator that the bank has reflected the transaction to facilitate
balancing the checkbook. You will notice that F4 and F5 contain the
string 'x ', that is 'x' followed by two spaces. Unfortunately I have
only entered 'x' into these cells. Every time the spreadsheet is saved,
closed and re-opened another space is appended to these cells. I
haven't been successful re-producing this phenomena in another
spreadsheet and I am not sure if it is related to the issue above.

These issues appeared with the upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10.

[Bug 1263326] Re: #VALUE doesn't propagate correctly subtracting text from numbers

2013-12-21 Thread Ray DeCampo
Christopher, the calculation in H6 of H5-D6 is protected by the IF()
function, ensuring that we do not use H5-D6 when D6 is . In fact, the
cell has the proper value when other things are changed that should not
affect this bug. As I stated in my original description, this includes
ordering the rows by date or re-copying the formulas in D6 and E6 to
themselves. This proves that the formula in H6 is fine. Furthermore
the formula for H4 and H5 are the same as H6 except for the row numbers
and as you can see there is no #VALUE issue with those cells. This
behavior is new, I have been using this spreadsheet since 2001 in
OpenOffice/LibreOffice and never had this issue.

[Bug 1263326] Re: #VALUE doesn't propagate correctly subtracting text from numbers

2013-12-21 Thread Ray DeCampo
Further investigation reveals that the issue is that the cell D6 is
incorrectly evaluated to the value instead of the value . This
can be verified by copying the cell D6 and pasting just the text into
another cell. So perhaps it is related to the same issue that is
causing the cells in the F column to change from x to x and then x
.

2013-12-05 Thread Ray DeCampo
Raymond, I tried using hdajackreset as you suggested and I did get the
VT170BB 8-Ch Digital mapped to device 1 and the HDMI mapped to device 3.
However, I still was not able to get sound in that configuration. I ran
alsa-info.sh in that config and will attach the output.

2013-12-02 Thread Ray DeCampo
I will get the information Raymond requested later today (don't have
time right now). Daniel, I am not sure why alsa would not be at the
latest version. Synaptic reports alsa-base version is 1.0.25+dfsg-
0ubuntu4 and that the latest version is the same. The alsa-utils
package is 1.0.27.1-1ubuntu1 however. I ran sudo apt-get update and
there was no change. I am attaching my /etc/apt/sources.list. I also
have /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list containing the line deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main.

Raymond, please see attached output from the alsa-info.sh script when

[Bug 1256646] [NEW] [System Product Name, Nvidia MCP77/78 HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2013-12-01 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

Sound stopped working on upgrade from 13.4 to 13.10. Up until then,
sound via HDMI worked fine. Now, I get no sound through HDMI. Checked
the Sound Settings and alsa mixer and everything looks fine. If I hook
up speakers to the microphone port I get sound.

I used ubuntu-bug -s audio to report this bug (very nice BTW). If
there is any additional information you need or anything you would like
me to try, I am game for it.

Thanks for the feedback Raymond, although I am not sure I quite
understand what you are getting at. I removed the /etc/asound.conf file
but still no sound. I also tried the same /etc/asound.conf file using
hw:0,7 in place of hw:0,3 also without success. I rebooted after
each configuration change to ensure they were recognized.

[Bug 1222873] Re: No sound at all in Saucy

2013-11-04 Thread Ray DeCampo
Upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and lost my audio. I am using nvidia HDMI.
I tried the workaround referenced above with no luck. I tried a bunch
of different nvidia drivers with no luck. Everything in the GUIs looks
fine but no sound emits. This set up was working fine in 13.04. Not
sure if this falls under this bug or if I should open a separate one,
please advise.

[Bug 1070302] Re: [regression] Dash loses interaction with keyboard

2012-12-14 Thread Ray DeCampo
I experience this bug when using the arrow keys to navigate within
results. I never use the Esc key when operating dash (I wasn't aware it
did anything). This happens to me on a regular basis but unfortunately
I cannot reproduce it reliably. It happens more often if I have just
switched workspaces using the keyboard (Ctrl-Alt-Right, e.g.) and then
use the arrow keys in dash before all results are returned (search
indicator still spinning).

[Bug 1080726] [NEW] Installer should ensure a Boot BIOS partition is created on GPT when BIOS is non-EFI

2012-11-19 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

I did a fresh install of 12.10 on a new SSD and used the installer to
partition the drive. I had chosen 'Something Else' for installation
type (http://www.debianadmin.com/wp-content/gallery/quantal/4.png)
because I had 12.04 installed on another drive. The installer created a
GPT type partition table. When I rebooted the system would not boot
from the drive because the BIOS was non-EFI.

The installer should try to detect this situation and prevent it. When
I ran Boot Repair it was able to tell me I had a GPT drive on a non-EFI
BIOS with no Boot BIOS partition, so it is possible.

[Bug 612829] Re: Switching users freezes workstation temporarily

2010-10-06 Thread Ray DeCampo
Actually we have been working around it by always logging out so I am
not sure. I just tried switching back and forth a couple of times and
so far so good. I will give it a try over the next few days and let you
know.

(I did notice one of the recent updates fixed a boot up issue for me,
where the boot would take much, much longer than it had been, which
seemed to happen as the same time as this bug. So hopefully both of
those are taken care of.)

[Bug 612829] [NEW] Switching users freezes workstation temporarily

2010-08-02 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When using the switch users functionality, the computer is frozen for a
time after entering the password for the user. In my case, we always
have two users logged into the system and switch between them. The
longer the system is up, the longer the terminal will freeze. While
frozen the screen is black except for a non-responsive mouse cursor.
Keyboard input is apparently ignored, including Ctrl-Alt-Fx, where x is
a number, Ctrl-Alt-Del and Ctrl-Alt-Bksp.

[Bug 612829] Re: Switching users freezes workstation temporarily

2010-08-02 Thread Ray DeCampo
Forgot to mention that the system was working fine (aside from bug
#607543) before running updates late last week. Whatever updates were
installed seems to be the culprit. If someone can direct me how to get
a list, I will gladly supply it.

[Bug 242982] Re: Music player starts in all user sessions

2008-10-02 Thread Ray DeCampo
No offense, but it strikes me as a poor practice to mark a bug invalid,
make a comment that it is a duplicate, but not provide the specific bug
report for which it is a duplicate. That is a recipe for losing issues.
Who is going to be triaging bugs marked as invalid?

[Bug 242982] [NEW] Music player starts in all user sessions

2008-06-25 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

We frequently use the Switch User capability and maintain two or three
sessions at a time. When one user inserts a music CD the music player
starts (as expected). However, when returning to another user's
session, we find that the music player was started in that session as
well. Furthermore the window decorations are missing from the
application when this happens; I was able to close the music player by
right-clicking its representation in the taskbar and selecting close.

I expected that the music player would be confined to running within the
current user's session only.

Unfortunately I am not at the computer exhibiting the problem right now,
so I cannot get the exact output of 'lsb_release -rd' but I can say it
is release 8.04 and up-to-date as of 2008/06/23.

[Bug 185811] Re: No sound on fresh install of 7.10

2008-02-02 Thread Ray DeCampo
The following advice from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ASUS_M2N-E_SLI seems
to have made my system whole:

[quote]
The sound card works, is an ubuntu alsa 'misconfiguration' (from my point of
view) that cause the problem. The /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configuration
prevent the snd-usb-audio module to grab the index 0, becaming the default
audio driver. To solve the problem is sufficent to comment or delete the
following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:

#options snd-usb-audio index=-2

After a reboot audio will work.

Some additional information. Some applications are working fine with
sound, e.g. the Movie Player, or Firefox playing mp3s. Other
applications are not working with sound, e.g. mpg321 or Firefox playing

[Bug 185811] [NEW] No sound on fresh install of 7.10

2008-01-24 Thread Ray DeCampo
Public bug reported:

Installed 7.10 using the Live CD on a new system with onboard sound
(Asus MSN-E SLI mainboard with USB audio) and sound did not work with
the system. I finally got sound to work via System - Preferences -
Sound and then changing all the choices from 'Autodetect' to 'USB
Audio'. Let me know if there is any additional information I can
supply.
