More that a week was needed for this trivial harmless fix to go through
this nonsensical bureaucracy. The ubuntu update procedure is broken.

[Bug 1615297] Re: lubuntu 16.04.1 desktop fails to install cups

2016-08-25 Thread Bill Who
As mentioned... ONLY lubuntu 16.04 desktop cups is missing.

Previous and Next versions have cups in the installer:

lubuntu 14.04 desktop has cups
lubuntu 15.04 desktop has cups
lubuntu 15.10 desktop has cups
lubuntu yakkety desktop has cups
--and--
lubuntu 16.04 alternate has cups

Surely this is a defect (regression, bug) that has been CORRECTED in
yakkety. It is certainly unexpected behaviour!

[Bug 774089] Re: Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-05-03 Thread Who
Is there any safe way to install Ubuntu on these Macs now? Has anyone
found a way to do the install that doesn't result in the firmware being
re-installed (I know that once it has been done once it happens
automatically the next time, but I'm not altogether sure that's a good
thing either!)

Surely we need to find a solution to do the install without needing the
firmware updated - why does the installer even touch the firmware?!

Paul, they had a Logic Board in the store already, so said they could
have it done for Tuesday (I got the last appointment on Saturday). There
was a minor display hotspot issue that I'd been meaning to have fixed
for a while but they had to order in a display for that, which meant
they didn't know if it would be done before Wednesday. I'm in the UK and
Monday is a bank holiday, as was Friday, so it is slightly unusual
timing.

[Bug 774089] Re: Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-05-01 Thread Who
For this fix to work you must use the RIGHT firmware, if you copy the
blog post exactly you will get the firmware for the 5,2. If you don't
have a 5,2 then it won't work.

You need to find the LATEST firmware for YOUR Macbook.

For example, if you have a MBP 5,5 then I would EXPECT that you should
try downloading the following firmware update package:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Pro_EFI_Firmware_Update_1_7_

In there there are two firmware files, for a 5,5 you want
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware
Update.app/Contents/Resources/MBP55_00AC_03B_LOCKED.scap

NOTE: I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS, TRY AT OWN RISK as I do not have my Macbook
right now.

If you follow the procedure in the blog post here:
http://pubmem.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/flash-efi-firmware-update-manually-on-a-macbook-51/

but using this firmware file instead then I think things should work :)

Good luck,
Who

[Bug 774089] Re: Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-04-30 Thread Who
I can confirm that I have the same problem. Here's some more information

Macbook Pro 5,5. 8GB RAM. 2.26Ghz

1. Using Ubuntu amd64 11.04 desktop ISO, installing alongside OS X but having
chosen to MANUALLY specify partitions.
2. I installed GRUB on to /dev/sda (which was an error, really - had I been
concentrating harder then I'd have chosen /dev/sda4 which Ubuntu was on...)
3. On first reboot, the power light flashed fast, multiple times and then
there was a long beep. Black screen only
4. On second boot, the power light turned on and stayed lit, but nothing at all
happend
5. Eventually, the computer booted properly (!) - I presume this is a low-level
apple safeguard?

What makes this serious, in my opinion is that the problem seems NOT to
be confined to the disk:

Here are debug notes:

 * Conveniently I had just swapped out an old hard disk. (hours earlier,
it wasn't erased). When returning this known-good hard disk to the
system the problem described in (3) above was still visible

 * When I went to the Apple Store today they could not launch their
diagnostic utility by holding one of N, M or B, I couldn't see...
Basically the Mac guy was rather surprised by this

 * PRAM reset, while impossible in the conventional way because the boot
firmware doesn't seem to work properly, can be done by unplugging the
battery and holding power button (not recommended) DOES NOT fix the
problem

 * I completely re-partitioned the disk and rei-installed Mac OS. This
did not fix the problem

 * I could not make one of Apple Firmware restore CDs
(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213) work (this COULD be because I could
not find one appropriate for Macbook 5,5). I did not persevere as far
with this as I might have liked because I had a genius bar appointment
and ran out of debugging time and 'the internet' told me Apple Stores
could easily restore firmware

 * Apple Store 'Genius' concluded after 35 mins of debug that I needed a
new logicboard. Luckily I am under warranty, but had I not been this
might have been very expensive. I presume that, while this WILL probably
fix the system, it is overkill - that said, if someone whose computer
isn't under warranty experiences this they may be told they need to pay
for this repair.

This computer previously had 9.04 and 9.10 on it without issue.

[Bug 774089] Re: Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-04-30 Thread Who
It might also be worth working out a fix for anyone with their computer
out-of-warranty. To this end the following debug information might also
be useful

 * I could not run the latest firmware update utility because it told me 'my
computer does not need the update'
 * This message persisted even after a complete re-install of OS X/redownload
of the firmware utility
 * I could not find a firmware recovery CD for the macbook pro 5,5
(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213) (could we modify one of these to use the
latest firmware for 5,5?)

* More annoyingly, I couldn't get the computer in to the right mode to reflash
anyway. The Apple manual says

# Turn on the computer and continue holding the Power button. The sleep LED
will blink rapidly, then slowly, then rapidly (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3
quick blinks).

On Macs that don't have a sleep LED, tones are used instead. Hold down
the power button until you hear 3 long tones, then 3 short tones, then 3
long tones.

On Macs that use a tray-load optical drive, the tray will open to allow the
Restoration CD to be inserted.
# Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking or tones
sounding, then release the Power button. A long tone is played once the
recovery process has started.

However I could not get the '3-quick, 3-long, 3-quick' pattern to occur.
I did not try this as many times as I should have done to be certain. I
was using the firmware restore cd 1.9, which doesn't list 5,5, but its
list is wrong anyway: it incorrectly lists 5,1 as a 2010 model when it
is really the mid 2009 17 (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4132 vs
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320)

Here are some useful debug docs that don't jump out of Google as easily as I'd
have liked:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674 - bootup sequence and status lights. I can't
correlate anything on their to our problem
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 - key combos at startup

[ubuntu-art] Good Job :)

2010-03-02 Thread Who
Hi all,

I've not been actively reading Ubuntu-art for ages, and I'm sad that
I've not had time to be involved at all. Anyway, just thought I'd stop
by to say that I've been using 9.10 without messing around with the
themes, etc, for a good few months now and I'm loving it.

Just thought I'd stop by and say 'sweet work, guys' :) Maybe soon I'll
have some time :P

Re: [Bug 484636] Re: no connection to ubunto one

2010-01-29 Thread who
Dear Mr. Miller,

I also think you are right. When I try to get a new computer connected,
I am asked for password and keypad (Schlüsselbund). Unfortunately I can
type my password onto infinity, again and again, it won't be accepted
and so the token cannot be set.

How can I fix that?

Please give me a sign. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Subject: [Bug 484636] Re: no connection to ubunto one

There are two steps to adding the computer: 1) Proving which account on
Launchpad/U1 you own. 2) Authorizing a particular computer to be
applied to that account.

It looks like you do not have a local authentication token. When you
are sent to sign-in, you have to accept a token to be used. it may give
you the ability to name more descriptively the computer you are adding,
but after that you must click add this computer at the bottom.

After that, your sync logs will not say NoAccessToken: No access token
found..

Re: [Bug 424999] Re: Network Manager 0.7 quits recognizing broadband devices after apache 2.0 installed

2010-01-25 Thread Who Cares
Yes, in fact, it happens several times. However, I intially
misdiagnosed the problem; it is not with the network manager applet, but
rather a problem with the operating system intermittantly recognizing
the broadband device. I believe I saw another forum addressing this
issue.

Thanks

The Network Manager was working fine, until installed
Apache 2 server with PHP5 support on my computer.  The
server was running fine and I was still connected to the
Internet through the broadband device.  However, when I
finished for the night, closed the connection, and turned
off the computer, the applet would not recognize the device
the next morning.  I have removed the Apache server
and, I think, all associated libraries, but the device is
still not recognized. However, the device recognizes that it
 is attached to a computer.

An obvious fix is too reinstall the OS, since no one really
should have a web server running on their computer if they
are hooking up to the Internet with a broadband device, but
 is there another solution?

Dear Joshua,

thank you for your reply.

###

3) When you say you can't upload any file to Launchpad, I'm assuming you
mean you can put files in your ~/Ubuntu One/ folder and have them
automatically upload to the Ubuntu One cloud? If so, I need to know if
you're using NetworkManager. If you are not, Ubuntu One will not work.
If you are using NetworkManager, can you please confirm that Ubuntu One
is connecting (you see a cloud icon in your task bar) and let me know
what happens when you put a file in the ~/Ubuntu One folder?
#

Exaclty that is the problem: Ubuntu One will not connect although
network manager is running.

How can I fix that?

[Bug 424999] [NEW] Network Manager 0.7 quits recognizing broadband devices after apache 2.0 installed

2009-09-05 Thread Who Cares
Public bug reported:

Release 9.04 (jaunty)
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-15-generic
GNOME 2.26.1
network-manager-gnome 0.7.1~rc4.1-0ubuntu2

The Network Manager was working fine, until installed Apache 2 server
with PHP5 support on my computer. The server was running fine and I was
still connected to the Internet through the broadband device. However,
when I finished for the night, closed the connection, and turned off the
computer, the applet would not recognize the device the next morning. I
have removed the Apache server and, I think, all associated libraries,
but the device is still not recognized. However, the device recognizes
that it is attached to a computer.

An obvious fix is too reinstall the OS, since no one really should have
a web server running on their computer if they are hooking up to the
Internet with a broadband device, but is there another solution?

[Bug 114160] Re: make possible to mute sound on boot with a key combinaison

2009-08-11 Thread Who
I have a proposed solution.

In Jaunty, at least, the login sound is a separate item in the 'startup
programs' or whatever page of the 'Sessions' dialogue.

If that item, rather than _directly_ running a sound just ran a small
bash/python/whatever script that checked if XF86Mute was pressed and
then only played the sound if it WAS.

Is there any reason wrapping the startup sound like this is a bad idea?

If so, what are we doing as a replacement?

I was browsing the LongTerm incoming page, and it IMHO Dust is very
good. Of course, if it doesn't go with the overall philosophy of
Ubuntu, then we cannot have that. I am a new addition, so I may be
missing something. What are we doing, what is our color palette, and
 when do we get started?

Just in case you haven't got the message from the other replies - this
team and this list will not be making the decisions and probably will
not be making the theme.

We are a group of people who work on _additional_ themes to the
default one, so we don't have a call on the decisions.

Hope that clears things up. Get going on some cool things, and if you
get something of a high standard and get it packaged it wil be
considered as an alternative theme.

I think it is still in incoming because a number of external sites link to it.

The effort has, shall we say, paused. I have some more work for
Blubuntu sitting on my machine somewhere that needs to go up and that

If it isn't doing any harm in Incoming then I would prefer it stayed,

landing/redirect page (which I think defeats the purpose of moving it
and explains its bouncing into and out of attic...)

Key points put forward on this list are:

This is awesome :) I'm pleased to see organisation and discussion in a
direction away from the default theme. Spot on.

I tried to instigate a process like this a few years ago - but there
was basically no take up. I think reading through
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-art/2008-January/004821.html
Clearly, something in that process wasn't right because it didn't bear
any fruit! For edgy we were more successful, and Frank Schoep, who
coordinated that process replied with his thoughts to the thread
above.

Having a look at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/ThemeTeams
and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Blubuntu/
might be useful for ideas about how to organise this (The first link
was not a success, so bear that in mind!)

Before I start I think my answers to the below will make more sense if
I say that I think we should not limit what we make installable to a
selected set of themes. All the themes we make should be packaged
(with LP this is easy, right?) and then we should take a selection of
those packaged themes and make a metapackage called
'ubuntu-community-thmes' for the 'best' themes that we want to
showcase. If someone wants to find out about a theme we made on the
wiki and install it from the repos rather than manually, why should we
limit them?

 1) Define guidelines for inclusion

a) Packaged
b) Provides unique GTK, Metacity (bonus points for wallpaper, GDM, usplash, etc)
c) Has a maintainer prepared to handle bugs for this theme through the cycle
d) Developed by people on the list, or with the explicit
collaboration/contact with the original author if bits from other
places ar used. I really wouldn't expect unique icon themes for this
cycle, for example!

I think completeness should be strongly considered - If someone/some
people create a theme with a usplash, GDM, Desktop, GTK, Metacity,
emerald, lock screen dialog, icon, GTK and QT themes that match then
this should go in above a similar or even 'more popular' GTK/metacity
only theme. One reason I suggest doing this is that it incentivises
creation of complete, thorough themes!

 2) Define milestones and deadlines dates

I thought through this before and lined up art deadlines with
deadlines in the release cycle. (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/ThemeTeams)

We were late to the party back then, and so I think everything should
come forward a bit, probably.

I would say the milestones and rough deadlines are
a) Rules of Engagement - to be done by end of UDS
b) Themes put forward with idea/brainstorm page so other team members
can decide which theme to help with
c) Around alpha 2 get first set of packages done
d) Alpha 3 ish - Packes in REVU for inclusion in Universe THIS NEEDS
TO BE BEFORE UVF Universe!
e) official first release in alphas - publicity for testing - we want
to be operating with LP bugtrackers for each theme at this stage. I
suggest at this stage all themes have their name ON THE BACKGROUND so
bugs get reported to right community theme,
f) In line with the main distro final deadline we want images/artwork
finished to leave lots of time for bugfixing, final packaging, quality
improvements, etc

 3) Define the decision process

All themes that get into universe should be in
ubuntu-community-themes-extra metacpackage

A select few complete and excellent themes in
ubuntu-community-themes

 I would add ...

 4) Define the process to remove a submission

Why? But if we need to can't we just close the LP team for it and
remove the package?

 5) Define packaging and support requirements

See above:
a )Must be packaged and in REVU by UVF for Universe. We should try and
use LP from the start.
b) Must have a 'maintainer' prepared to handle all bugs. Maintenance
team preferred.

 Are there others?

I think we should run a few 'Theme Schools' in IRC leading up to the
deadline for putting forward a theme

a) GTK themeing
b) GDM metacity
c) PACKAGING and using BZR and LKP -- maybe run this one twice to
ensure everyone can make it

 John

I also think there should be an 'Artist in Chief' to facilitate the
whole process and ultimately make the final decision of themes for the
showcase package (taking into account the opinions of the community).
This leader should probably be elected (I would not be against Ken
appointing someone either, tbh), but things like 'can make UDS' might
be important criteria for the leader.

This sounds exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do!

Original Message:

Hi all,

in XFCE, Thunar and Mousepad do a nice trick of having a red box when
you're running the app as superuser to warn you that bad things could
happen.

I really like this, I think it makes it really clear that you need to
watch out. I tried some ways to replicate it on Ubuntu/GNOME. I came
up with a solution that gives a really clear clue to the user that
doesn't require any apps to be modified (see the screenshot). It is
this:

Create or choose a read icon and gtk theme, place those in the .icons
and .themes directory in /root, and then make that theme have the same
name as the icon and gtk themes being used by the user - obviously
when a user changes their theme this will be lost, but many people
don't change their theme (arguable those who do don't need such cues)
and there might be a way to adapt it to make it more flexible...

Here is a screenshot to demonstrate what I'm talking about... Nothing
says 'beware' like red folder icons, right?
In that screenshot you can also see the way red bar in Thunar.

What do people think - worth pursuing?

Ok. I poked around and /root is treated pretty much like a users dir.
Untouchable. So we would need a plan B.

By default .icons and .themes for the root directory symlink to
/usr/share/themes/caution/ and /usr/share/icons/caution/ ?

Anyone that _actually_ wants to change the theme for their root user
will deal fine with this and fix it as required, I would say.

Worse option, use the fact that a theme is loaded first from the
.themes directory and then from /usr/share/themes.

Any of them viable?

The root user uses themes from /usr/share/*. No .icons or .theme folders
are there. So, doesn't seem like this would work.

The above was a suggestion - ie we modify (in the initial distro..)
the /root folder to contain .icons and .themes that link elsewhere...
I was suggesting creating these new /usr/share/(themes|icons)/root/
folders for this purpose.

 Any of them viable?

 3 is the minimum feel-good number. 2 doesn't feel like a set. Above 5
you slowly walk into oh-my--so-many-choices land.

Fine by me. Though, 3 GDM themes will be hard to come buy. I don't think
I've seen 1 working one all cycle from us. Seems it's been all GTK themes.

Not that this is gonna happen now, but we should have our choices in
mind for what will go into the package.

GDMs are easy to 'personalise', harder to totally reinvent. If we
wanted three that just 'fitted the branding of the other themes' we'd
be fine.

In fact, to be honest, we could quite easily do 3 unique GDMs - it is
just a bit of XML editing, last time I tried (:S)

I agree, three themes, but there's no reason to stop at 3 if we get
four great ones made.

Also, I'd like to think about a way of being able to switch between
them easily - that will change GDM, BG, Usplash, and some other App
splashes, if we get that far. A good theme has so many components it
is crazy to expect the user to 'turn them all on' but we shouldn't
expect them to have to reinstall a theme to change the theme, unless
we write a little UI that does that for them.

I propose a theme consitst of:
Usplash theme
GDM theme
Desktop BG
Icon theme (NOT expecting these to be designed form scratch, just use
a good HQ one that fits best if you want... edit key icons, perhaps)
GTK Theme

Opional but good:
Matching theme for QT apps.
Some nod to Wine integration by using linux colours or a WinXP theme
that is close to yours
Firefox Theme IF FF doesn't inherit your theme well (userstyles.css,
if I remember correctly)
Evolution theme (if evolution doesn't pick up the GTK icons
yet...didn't used to)
Splash screens for Gimp, OpenOffice, other major apps with splashes.

That is good too. I'm just wondering who can write such a tool that
manages your whole Desktop? What will be the format of the package and

Indeed.

I know that exiting themes have (had?) the capacity to suggest
1. Desktop BG
2. Font

So I think we should use the same format as that system used. I'll do
some digging when I get a bit of free time today.

Ubuntu-artwork is a team of people who are interested in making
additional themes for Ubuntu. If you've got an idea for a new look
that could ship alongside the default, or want to work towards
something that you think might one day challenge for the default spot,
then jump in, the water's great. We tend to work in small groups on
themes, so alongside people with a strong vision who can lead a team
we need plenty of others that can work together to help get a great
complete, cohesive look. This involves designers, packagers, GTK+
themeing experts (hey, even QT theme experts are welcome :P) and we

Why do we need one theme, not 5?

Why should we be limited by the requirements of a default theme when
making new, exciting work?

Why should what Mark likes define every theme this team produces when

Shouldn't the artwork community work to ensure that there are themes
to suit a range of preferences in Ubuntu - not just one default theme
that has a number of other very important constraints on it that

The community is NOT making the default theme - it doesn't matter that
we have many different themes. It only matters if nobody every
finishes a theme and packages it so it can be distributed in Universe,
eventually maybe Main.

I'm new to this list, but I was just wondering what consideration was being

I was just wondering because I was looking at the official page of the
Nodoka engine and was pretty impressed with the direction it was taking.
 Here is a link to the page;
 https://fedorahosted.org/nodoka/wiki/0.8.x_Brainstorm . Of specific interest
is the 'Modern' screenshot. I think a theme based on that engine (when that
engine comes to fruition) could be really great.

Complete, new, well maintained theme engines that are packaged for
Ubuntu are not common. The problem with making a theme that relies on
a newer engine is likely to be finding a maintainer for the code and
someone to keep the new engine in Universe and up-to-date. For this
reason there are people on this list that would encourage you to
either:

 - Be the maintainer of the theme in Ubuntu if you want to use it -
this involves managing bugreports, etc
 - Use a theme for which there is already a maintainer
 - ask the designers of the new engine if they want to maintain it in
Ubuntu (obviously, to them the news that someone wants to make a great
theme based on it that would also be packaged in Universe or even Main
could be a big incentive here...)

In the case of Nodoka I don't know whether there is already someone
pushing this into Ubuntu - sorry.

There are people on this list that know more about this than I do, but
I understand that (at least when Nodoka was first released) it was
largely based on Murrine (which _will_ be packaged for Int. Ib. ) and
that you could achieve the same look with both. This looks like it
might no longer be true... I dunno... Andrea Cimitan, who develops
Murrine might be able to answer to this part.

Does that help?

As my boss said to me yesterday, Until I can click the button to [see

Whoever is managing the various theme projects should recruit a

Another reason you're spot on here is that there's no way we can
expect a tarball with a theme to make it into a release.

We need packaging to be there from the start, so it comes naturally to

We can never get consensus in an open group like this with multiple teams
 working on different themes.

Indeed, but I question whether we need a consensus! This team does not
design the default theme for a whole host of very well discussed
historical reasons. We are only wasting peoples' time if we pretend we
are.

What I think might work is this -

Snip vote for direction model.

Everyone is doing a great job - Ken Vermette, KIm, the New Wave theme guys
etc., but we need to vote on one direction. The sooner we do this, the
better. Once we have a direction decided, we will have reasonable clues for
everything else - icons, wallpapers etc. And once we decide the direction,
we know the engine we use and therefore can request help from the engine
authors in case the primary developers are stuck with something.

I really don't think one direction is the best plan for us as a team -
hence my suggestion that our focus be moved _officially_ away from
this. Because new members keep joining who haven't been through the
whole process we have to keep establishing every release that Ken does
the default theme with the assistance of the team _because he is the
best person to do it_ for a whole load of reasons including the fact
that he is employed by Mark and so has a good chance of making things

Mark said it was up to the art team- therefore Ken- then he would approve it.

Actually, example-look is better as Ubuntu Studio made it's initial art

Alongside ExampleLook as an example of packaging there is the Blubuntu

 Hi all,

This is a simple technical question, and I just want to know if this would
 be easily possible in Murrine.

I want to submit another, more plausible theme proposal to the Intrepid
wiki, but I want to know if Murrine will allow for customizable
backwards/forwards buttons in nautilus (as well as system-wide). My idea is

Yes.
http://orford.org/gtk/#icons

For some more examples look at some of the XFCE themes (Rodent, as I
recall, does it) which also do this.
Hope that helps :) You'll notice that page has lots of other links
about themeing - if you want to get involved then it is a great place
to start

Re: [ubuntu-art] How to provide more alternate wallpapers without influencing CD size requirements

 Hi all,

This is an idea I had to provide users with more alternate wallpapers
without influencing the install CD's footprint. If this is too off-topic
for an art-team posting, please let me know and direct me to where this idea
does belong. At least it is tangentially related to Ubuntu's art
 experience.

In addition to providing a couple extra default alternate wallpapers,
Canonical could host a special wallpaper repository the same way it does
 with synaptic and install/uninstall.

Scenario: Grandma May is using her Ubuntu for the first time and wants to
change the wallpaper. She right clicks the desktop, sees change
wallpaper, and clicks through. After seeing there are only 4 or 5
alternates (I am still optimistic), she notices the Get More Ubuntu
Wallpapers button in the bottom right-hand corner of the nautilus window.
(if granny didn't have an internet connection, the box would be grayed out
and unclickable) She clicks it and is connected to a repository of
pre-selected Ubuntu art works. In the repo, she sees small icons, and can
mouse-over/single click to see larger previews. After checking the boxes
for the wallpapers she wants, Grammy clicks Install Wallpapers and is
done. Users could happily choose from hundreds of specially chosen
backgrounds which have been selected for their color/composition to go well
with the new Ubuntu default theme, instead of googling for hours for free
wallpapers. Backgrounds could be arranged by topic, with options like
 Select All Nature Wallpapers, etc.

Canonical could thereby 1) redefine the user experience, 2) gain more
control over Ubuntu's aesthetic appeal, and 3) streamline the CD install
 image all in one swoop.

Is this a good idea/something that could be passed on to relevent parties?

A very similar tool used to exist in universe - it gave nice friendly
access to all themes, wallpapers, lsplashes etc on art.gnome.org -
maybe it still does?

Potential if it can be made to use GNOME/Ubuntu-look. GNOME-Art is just
 about dead. :(

Wouldn't this rather bring it back from the brink?
Also, it is true that there's a lot of nice stuff already there - the
'signal to noise' ratio on Gnome Art always seemed higher than on
Gnome Look...

But yea, I see your point - would be better if it worked somehow else...

Hi all. I'm tinkering with the Feisty Studio theme. Thinking of bringing

Hey Cory,

I assume you've tried editing the same styles that you're applying to
the panel elements to get the background to also draw button
backgrounds that will blend in seamlessly? I don't think this is a
very nice answer, but I think it could be kludged with the pixmap
engine if you were really keen. (i.e just make the look for inactive
buttons on the panel the same as the panel background, + some trickery
to make it look 'right' - potentially you open a 'scaling' can of
worms here - I don't know - sorry)

By the looks of things, this theme does that (look at the end of the
email. in an addendum effraie noted that the gtkrc was from the Linsta
theme.)
http://osdir.com/ml/linux.ubuntu.artwork/2006-10/msg00049.html

Two questions:
1. If you drag those panels on to the side of the screen, how does the
image respond? When I last tried this, if you had applied the image to
the panel using the panel confuiguration UI then putting the panel
side on broke it (eg it didn't rotate it) - which would make using
this as a technique less desirable...

2. How do you currently theme the panel - like
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-art/2006-September/003203.html
?

I still think there's a strong argument that a panel image should be
able to be 'suggested' in a theme just like a background or font can
be (http://orford.org/gtk/#fonts). I don't know why I never got around
to submitting it as a feature request - I guess I was expecting some
discussion about it when I suggested it back then, or forgot :S What
do you think?

Hope that isn't just a pile of stuff you already know - I am aware it
might well be :)

If by usability you mean the ability to use, I'll have to disagree.
There is no way a mainstream distribution should sacrifice basic
accessibility for aesthetics. In case you didn't get what I'm hinting at,
it's the razor-thin scrollbars and scale sliders.

My bad, you're right about these.

I agree this is a very good theme - and I'd like to bring out some of
the things I think are good about it

 * Distinctive: No other OS looks like this BUT it doesn't break
usability I.E it's unique and usable... All elements (with the
possible exception of the menus that really need an outline if you
want to use them without a shadow-porviding WM)
 * Good use of Colour: We are limited in the Ubunut Palette, but this
theme demonstrates how colour can really make a good theme]
 * Flat, Matte. It is nice to move away form the glossy effects that
have felt dated for a wile now, and this does it without feeling like
it goes back to win 9x
** Consistent ** : Here is a really important one, imo: the people
that like Elegant Brit have made sure that it is possible to
_completely_ theme Gnome, splash screens, icons, GDM etc. If you are
so inclined (and I am :P) then you can make the UI feel completely
integrated into this design. It is complete, and 'polished' (without
being shiny). There aren't any elements left hanging that feel out of
place

There is a good brownish equivalent that we might like to consider
editing for inclusion in Ubuntu:
Elegant Blankon:

This is it! My final version of Clear- it is now ready for coding!

If you want to try doing it yourself, rather than waiting for someone
else to come along and take on what looks to be a rather large coding
project, you could consider making it a pixmap theme. You can do it
'by hand' with the Gimp and the gtkrc file, or last I knew Thomas Wood
was working on a GUI editor for Pixmap themes
http://blogs.gnome.org/thos/2007/10/16/the-parsing/

Perhaps get in touch and see if he needs people to test it? Then you
can do this yourself and not have to worry about guideing someone else
through your vision

Hope that helps,

Awesome Ken, Once exams (and post exam joy) are over I will have a play.

Are we to report bugs against apps that don't do dark themes well
upstream or in LP?
