[Bug 1767558] Re: application page is just blank

2020-02-27 Thread cousteau
Can confirm.
Apparently the flightgear package is missing two dependencies.
I fixed this by manually installing this (as suggested in the FlightGear IRC
channel):

sudo apt install qml-module-qtquick-window2 qml-module-qtquick2

Could someone please add these two dependencies to the package?

[Bug 66566]

2019-02-22 Thread cousteau
I don't see how removing shift-enter and ctrl-shift-enter is even remotely
related to the original request of making ctrl-enter open URLs in a new tab.
In addition, it breaks a preexisting functionality of having shift-enter
automatically add www. .net and ctrl-shift-enter add www. .org.
Personally, if this feature were really necessary (in which case it should have
been opened as a separate bug), I would rather have it moved to an unused
combination. For example, Windows-enter could be "open in new window" and
Windows-alt-enter for "open in new tab, but on the background".
Or, if it is really that important to have these shortcuts on shift and
ctrl-shift, even despite of breaking preexisting behavior and getting a lot of
users upset, at least make windows-enter and ctrl-windows-enter the new .net
and .org shortcuts so that this functionality is not lost.
(Or going further: use alt for .com, windows for .net, and alt-windows for
.org, so that ctrl is left for opening on a new tab, be it from the URL bar or
from a link on the page; now THAT would solve the inconsistency issue the bug
originally complained about.)

Ultimately, removing the shortcut for .net and .org but keeping it for
.com somehow suggests that .net and .org sites are "less important" than
.com ones. I could expect that from a browser developed by google.com
or microsoft.com, but not from one developed by mozilla.org.

[Bug 1791843] [NEW] Duplicate launcher for flightgear (in bionic)

2018-09-10 Thread cousteau
Public bug reported:

The flightgear package comes with two desktop launchers in bionic:
- /usr/share/applications/flightgear.desktop
- /usr/share/applications/org.flightgear.FlightGear.desktop
Both seem to run the same command (`fgfs --launcher`) and have the same icon;
only, the second is translated to more languages and seems to be the one
available in the git repository
. As a result, I
now can see two identical FlightGear icons under Xubuntu menu > Games.

This does not seem to be the case for artful and previous versions,
since the package contains a single application launcher there.

[Bug 1697122] Re: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable touch gestures

2018-08-31 Thread cousteau
Counter-argument: Try to zoom in on a PDF with this option on. (It
goes in increments of 10% *per pixel*.)

This could be considered a bug on Firefox though, so I guess as soon as
those little things are polished this change could be made (but then
again I guess the Firefox devs would include this option by default
themselves).

[Bug 1789704] [NEW] Whiteglass right_ptr pointer points incorrectly

2018-08-29 Thread cousteau
Public bug reported:

The "hot point" for /usr/share/icons/whiteglass/cursors/right_ptr seems
to be off by about 9 pixels (for a cursor size of 32 at least).

This is specially annoying because you're not clicking where you think
you're clicking. In the attached example, the cursor seems to be
pointing to the "i", but it is actually pointing to the [-] box, so
attempting to select text (without noticing that the pointer is not I
-beam-shaped) results in the [-] box being clicked instead.

This problem does not exist in the redglass theme (which is identical
but in red).

Distro/version:Xubuntu 18.04 64b
Screen resolution: 144 dpi
Pointer theme: whiteglass
Pointer size: 32(but also seems to happen at other sizes)

[Bug 1784903] [NEW] Volume keys auto-repeat indefinitely in Medion laptop

2018-08-01 Thread cousteau
Public bug reported:

Summary: Several models of Medion laptops need to be added to
`/lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb` so that volume keys don't auto-
repeat indefinitely.

I just installed Xubuntu on a Medion P6689 MD61019 laptop, and it turns
out that pressing the volume keys (Fn-F11/F12) causes them to auto-
repeat indefinitely, increasing/decreasing the volume until reaching
100%/0%. Same happens with mute (Fn-F10). Apparently these keys only
send key press events but not key release ones.

It seems that this issue is common in Medion laptops:
* https://askubuntu.com/questions/994333/volume-buttons-stay-pressed
*
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1048531/volume-control-keys-mute-volume-up-down-auto-repeat-key-presses
* https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=233114

For those affected by this bug, I posted a workaround here:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1061500/854656

I've attached the file with the workaround as I have it in my laptop
right now.

[Bug 1435988] Re: sometime right edge swip stop working on the lockscreen

2015-10-30 Thread Cousteau
I have a similar problem on my BQ 5 Ubuntu 15.04 r6. I can't open the
screen with swipes from any direction. It seems to happen when I leave
one of the locations were I have a wifi connection. It might be
coincidental, but when I leave my home I can't open the screen for a
couple of minutes. I've never had any issues with this while at home.
Could it be something with the wifi roaming?

[Bug 1368094] Re: Please backport openjdk-8 8u40~b04-2 (universe) from utopic

2015-10-13 Thread cousteau
Java 7 is End of Life'd since April:
https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_7.xml so third party software
built with an up-to-date Java won't work on Trusty (and Precise), which
are still supported, without installing a PPA.

New releases (starting with 16.04 LTS) should default to OpenJDK 8, and
it would be nice to backport OpenJDK 9
(http://openjdk.java.net/projects/jdk9/) as soon as possible to prevent
this issue in a future (Java 8 EOL is estimated to be in September 2017
according to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html).

[Bug 932177] Re: XFCE (and other non-GNOME) desktops do not initialise gnome-keyring correctly / WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to PKCS11

2014-05-08 Thread cousteau
It's 2014, this bug is already 2 years old, and hasn't been fixed yet,
at least on Xubuntu 12.04. Fixing it seems trivial.

Possible solutions:

1. If the package gnome-keyring is not needed on Xubuntu (or other
affected Ubuntu flavors), it should be considered to be removed from
it as a default package so that other applications don't try to
   connect to it.

2. If the package gnome-keyring is required, it should be fixed so that
it runs properly on all the Ubuntu flavors that use it. The problem
seems to be in /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.desktop which
is only enabled for Gnome and Unity.
   2.1. Fix the line OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;
2.1.1. by appending XFCE;KDE;LXDE; and any other DE that may
   need or use pkcs11.
2.1.2. by deleting or commenting out that line so that all DEs
may use it (if anything, add a NotShowIn=... blacklist
for DEs in which this may cause problems).
2.2. Make XFCE include an identical .desktop file with
OnlyShowIn=XFCE; in it, so that the fix for XFCE is independent
from other DEs.
2.3. Make XFCE load all Gnome services at startup by default (which
may also include some unwanted stuff and thus may not be a good
idea).

3. If the package gnome-keyring is required due to dependencies, but
the service pkcs11 is not needed for it and other applications to
run properly, the warning message it displays should be removed.
3.1. Making gnome-keyring not display that warning.
3.2. Making gnome-keyring inform applications that the service
pkcs11 is unavailable.
3.3. Making all applications that use gnome-keyring check whether
the service pkcs11 is available before requesting it (which
would imply fixing them one by one, which may be a bad idea).

[Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2013-01-08 Thread cousteau
Ok, I spent quite long to figure out why cedilla was the new acute.

Since my keyboard already has a Ç key (which I use very rarely) I'm
quite annoyed with the decision of making dead_acute + c become a c with
cedilla instead of a c with acute (which doesn't have any other input
method that doesn't involve writing Unicode codes). Wouldn't it be
possible to use a different combination for ç, such as dead_grave + c
(or the already existing AltGr-,)? Or use ~/.XCompose or instead of
overriding it with a custom configuration. If none of those seem
feasible, maybe giving cacute a different combination, such as
dead_grave + c, could do (although in my opinion it makes far more
sense that the dead ACUTE key, followed by the C key, prints a C with
ACUTE rather than a C with CEDILLA).

Among all possible solutions, I think that the best one would be to just
make the default input method use X11's Compose, which already solved
this problem in a localized way by having a special key composition file
for pt_BR locale which maps dead_acute c to ccedilla while keeping
other locales with the default cacute setting, in addition to allowing
the user to have a custom ~/.XCompose file.

[Bug 18995]

2012-10-04 Thread cousteau
This is my view of the perfect Open with/Save dialog:

File: name of the file (type, size)
Two tabs: Save as... and Open with...
Under Save as..., the typical Save as dialog. By default, displaying the
last directory selected, or the default one (usually Downloads).
Under Open with..., a list of installed applications. The list will be
headed by the 3 most used applications for that type. If possible, it would be
nice that the rest of applications were grouped by categories (Linux) or mimic
the Start menu (Windows); this is how PCManFM looks and it's quite handy.
Under it, a Custom command box (which would allow to enter commands with
arguments or paths to executables), optionally with a Browse... button.
At the bottom, the buttons Ok and Cancel, and a Do this automatically for
this type checkbox.

What do you think?

Character u'\xf3' is the ó in Mostra el código fuente. This bug is
fixed in https://bitbucket.org/bobf/bpython/changeset/b49882bf57a1 and
applying that patch actually solves the problem (although the problem
re-appears when running `LANG=C bpython` because then
getpreferredencoding() returns ascii).

[Bug 919899] Re: Compose sequence apostrophe+c produces a cedilla instead of acute

2012-09-03 Thread cousteau
(1) This bug is unrelated to bug #961741, so I request it to be unmarked
as duplicate. Bug #961741 is about the inability of typing any deadkey
sequence on the program Dash, while this one is about the change of a
specific sequence from meaning one thing to meaning another one (while
the rest of sequences work fine). Therefore I request this bug report
be unmarked as duplicate of bug #961741.

(2) I'm using Xubuntu 12.04, es_ES.UTF-8 locale, and I have the same
problem when typing a dead acute followed by 'c'. I expected to get a
'ć' but instead I'm getting a 'ç'. This doesn't happen in my Ubuntu
10.10 nor Lubuntu 10.04 machines.

(3) I've tried copying /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose to
~/.XCompose, as well as replacing the
/usr/share/X11/locale/iso8859-1/Compose and
/usr/share/X11/locale/iso8859-1/Compose files with
/usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose, with no success.

12.04, same bug. Either the /usr/share/gdb directory should be renamed
to /usr/share/gdb-msp430 (and the program recompiled to use the new
path) or just removed from the gdb-msp430 package and make gdb a

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

Rather than setting SysRq to Ctrl-Alt-PrintScreen, as it's done with other
keybindings such as Alt-Fx - Ctrl-Alt-Fx, or completely disabling it, I'd just
change the keybindings:
* PrintScreen: Save Screenshot dialog
* Shift+PrintScreen: Save Screenshot dialog for current window
Additionally, these direclty copy to clipboard shortcuts might be useful:
* Ctrl+PrintScreen: copy screen to clipboard (lossless quality)
* Shift+Ctrl+PrintScreen: copy window to clipboard

[Bug 665980] [NEW] apt-get autoremove ignores packages recommended by other packages

2010-10-24 Thread cousteau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

Ubuntu 10.10, minimal install

Steps to reproduce:
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install empathy
sudo apt-get remove --purge empathy
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge

Expected result: all packages that were installed automatically are uninstalled.
Actual result: some packages remain installed (for example, avahi-daemon).
Running `aptitude why avahi-daemon` returns: ubuntu-desktop Recommends
avahi-daemon.
This is apparently due to apt-get not registering whether a certain package was
installed with or without the --no-install-recommends option present. The only
way around so far seems to be saving the list of packages about to be installed
on a text editor and later removing them manually.

[Bug 665980] Re: apt-get autoremove ignores packages recommended by other packages

2010-10-24 Thread cousteau
LjL on irc://irc.freenode.net/ubuntu recommended me to use equivs, so I
picked ubuntu-desktop's config file, replaced ubuntu-desktop with
ubuntu-desktop-lite and Recommends: with Suggests:, created a .deb
with it and installed it, removing ubuntu-desktop afterwards. This is a
workaround that can be helpful in similar cases, so I put it here in
case somebody else needs it.

[Bug 570410] Re: memory usage continues to increase after zooming

2010-04-26 Thread cousteau
Was about to report it. It begins at about 20 MB RAM, but the RAM usage
grows up to 300 MB or so. This can slow down your system a lot if you
only have about 256-512 MB RAM. It seems that zooming in increases the
RAM usage proportionally, but zooming out doesn't decrease it, and
zooming it again will increase it again, even if you zoom in to the same
level as before.

The trac bug isn't the same, but it might have the same cause.

[Bug 287540] [NEW] Volume Control has quit unexpectedly on login

2008-10-22 Thread Cousteau
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 8.10.

After updating about four hours ago, about 11 AM GMT+1, and rebooting I
get the message:

Volume Control has quit unexpectedly , and the options to reload or not
reload. Reload just gives me the same box,
and eventually I just clicked 'not reload'.

Problem is, I can no longer adjust light or volume. Managed to adjust
volume in terminal with 'alsamixer' command, but that's it.

It doesn't cripple my installation, but the screen is a tad dark, and
changing volume fast is no longer an option.

P.S: Sorry if there is a lack of information, or otherwise anything
wrong with my report.
