[Bug 874980] [NEW] Unity window buttons indicator violates Fitts's law

2011-10-15 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

The window buttons indicator violates Fitts's law
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law) by not being clickable at
the very edge of the upper (and left) screen edge.

This causes massive user discomfort and a decrease in productivity due
to increased time consumption by aiming the buttons with the mouse
cursor. For example the user needs to follow the mouse cursor with their
eyes in order to be able to hit the close button, which is a waste of
precious time. In operating systems such as MS Windows one can click the
X button even with their eyes closed by sliding the mouse into the
screen corner. In Unity this is impossible due to the Fitts's law
violation, because the buttons are not clickable at the 1-pixel wide
upper and left edges.

The solution is simple. Remove the unclickable edges and make it
clickable everywhere.

Same problem on a fresh Natty install.

It most certainly is not a gnome-panel bug, because it happens to other

So it is probably a profiler bug, but a confirmed one nonetheless.

@Kenneth: the tone only reflects reality... and the comment WAS
constructive. I've tested whether anything had been done in regards to
this bug in Lucid. I found out that the situation had become worse. That
is what I reported. If only everyone focused on the bugs instead of this
code of conduct mumbo jumbo maybe we wouldn't even need these reports.

[Bug 436066] Re: Human theme vertical scroolbars have borders on maximized windows

2010-05-07 Thread unimatrix
Are you kidding me? What bug is that? Could you please link me? I can't
believe this is happening. They are intentionally crippling Ubuntu.

As for Compiz, I know it does this, especially with the Rotate Cube
plugin, but I've disabled that. And yes, some themes have been fixed,
but the best ones still have the problem (for example Dust Sand).

[Bug 433573] Re: Only 2 channels detected on echo3g devices

2010-01-31 Thread unimatrix
I did it !

I've managed to make a configuration for echo3g devices.
When it is placed in /usr/share/alsa/cards/ PulseAudio will be able to
automatically detect surround.
Not only that, but it will also be possible to switch between the following
modes:
Stereo, Surround 5.1, 4.0, 4.1, 7.1 and even Digital Stereo Output. I have
tested them and they all work!

So I'm attaching the config file: Echo_Echo3G.conf
It is necessary that it is named this way, otherwise it doesn't work.

Now I'm sure the configuration is far from perfect. I am certain it could be
optimized a lot, but the important thing is that it works.
It would however be nice if someone could test it on other Echo3G devices, such
as Layla 3G for example.

[Bug 433573] Re: Only 2 channels detected on echo3g devices

2010-01-30 Thread unimatrix
I only made a workaround in my /etc/default.pa as described in bug description
... I doubt you'll be committing that.
But I would gladly try to fix the files if I at least knew which ones to look
at (and it will probably take me quite a while to figure out what to change,
since I'm not exactly an ALSA expert).
I am guessing I probably need to make an entirely new config file for my card's
chip (Motorola DSP56361 Digital Signal Processor (rev 01)), right?

2010-01-30 Thread unimatrix
Got it, the config file name has to match the card name (detected by
kernel/alsa?).
In my case this is: Echo_Echo3G

So now if I make the Echo_Echo3G.conf file, it will be parsed. So far
I've used X-Fi's config file as a template, and it works. 5.1 is
detected by pulseaudio automatically. All I have to do now is configure
this properly then I will post the file for it to be committed.

[Bug 503627] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Window Applets

2010-01-05 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

GNOME Panel applets that substitute maximized window title and buttons.
GNOME violates Fitts's Law by putting a panel between the maxed window
buttons and the corner of the screen. These applets were designed to
solve the problem. Window Title and Window Buttons are essentially
controls for windows that are placed on the Panel instead of a window.
By default they only control maximized windows, but can be configured to
control any focused window.

[Bug 454879] Re: Applications using libsdl1.2-alsa randomly use 100% cpu and have broken sound playback

2009-11-01 Thread unimatrix
Easiest way I found to reproduce this bug was to keep opening and closing
xmoto. Sometimes it works correctly, sometimes it hogs up all of the CPU (or
one of the cores on multi-core processors).
Installing libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio fixed the problem for xmoto, however
chromium-bsu, which also depends on libsdl1.2debian, still uses 100% CPU -
every time (with -pulseaudio and -alsa). Same issue?

[Bug 451228] [NEW] Icons in gnome panel are too large

2009-10-14 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is not a usability bug, it is an aesthetic bug.

The icons in:
 - notification area
 - quick lounge applet
 - icons added as application launcher
are all too large!

Right now they are so tall they basically span from top to bottom of the panel.
And this makes it look ugly and unprofessional.
They need to be scaled down some 25%.

[Bug 436951] [NEW] Notification Area grey icons shuffled among others

2009-09-25 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The new grey icons in Ubuntu Karmic are very nice, but they get mixed with the
other 3rd party icons, and everything just ends up being messy.
A simple fix would be to flag the grey ones as system icons and move them
over to the right, while keeping the others on the left. It would look very
professional and aesthetic.

[Bug 436066] [NEW] Human theme vertical scroolbars have borders on maximized windows

2009-09-24 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

The new Human theme's Human controls in Ubuntu Karmic use scrollbars that have
borders on maximized windows (Firefox, Nautilus, ...)
This violates Fitts's law ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law ) and
creates annoyance for the user, because they are unable to grab the scroll by
moving the mouse cursor to the edge of the screen - instead aiming a little to
the left is required.

The scroll in Human theme has a 2-pixel wide border.
Also attaching image where the border is clearly marked.

[Bug 433573] [NEW] Only 2 channels detected on echo3g devices

2009-09-20 Thread unimatrix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libasound2

PulseAudio only detects 2 channels (stereo) instead of 6 (or more,
depending on your hardware).

Using module-udev-detect, my 6-channel sound card (Echo Audio Gina 3G)
is detected only as a stereo device, even though the daemon.conf setting
default-sample-channels is set to 6.

The workaround to resolve the issue is manually adding the alsa sink as
follows:

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,0 tsched=0
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,1 tsched=0

Of course that defeats the purpose for even having PulseAudio, because
now I have to make sure the sound card always gets the same index (still
problematic in Ubuntu, because other devices may take over index 0) and
the udev-detect module cannot be used afterwards, because it doesn't
understand that this sink has already been defined manually and
therefore duplicates it (as stereo).

However, this is NOT A PULSEAUDIO problem. It is a problem with Alsa
(particularly the asound library). As stated in this comment:
http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/648#comment:3
the users pace definition in /usr/share/alsa/cards/ for echo3g cards appears to
be missing. To fix this bug the right definition has to be written for Echo
Audio 3G cards.

[Bug 352159] Re: Sound stopped working after recent upgrade Jaunty beta

2009-08-30 Thread unimatrix
Another update:
It's actually a bit more weird. Turns out the USB device had little or nothing
to do with this.
Here is what I do to restore pulseaudio:
killall rhythmbox ; pulseaudio -k ; rm -r ~/.pulse* ; pulseaudio -v ;
pulseaudio -D

For some reason, after I remove all the ~/.pulse* stuff it will crash
the first time it is ran, but succeed the second time.

Also even with this, it sometimes still crashes randomly, but at least I
can get it working.

Now, what caused this: I suspect the last system update because this
wasn't happening before it. I am attaching the apt logfile.

[Bug 352159] Re: Sound stopped working after recent upgrade Jaunty beta

2009-08-30 Thread unimatrix
This happens to me with or without tsched=0
Pulseaudio doesn't even start up, even if I wipe ~/.pulse and ~/.pulse-cookie.

I have 3 audio cards:
* Echo Audio Gina 3G
* Intel ICH [ALi M5455]
* USB Device 0x47f:0xad01

The USB device is the USB converter for my Plantronics headset.

Here's what I did to solve this:
I unplugged the USB audio device, then started pulseaudio, then plugged the USB
adapter back. And now it works.

One last thing I would like to mention is that this started happening after I
had added this line to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:
options snd-echo3g index=0
I had to do this to force the card to always use index 0 (and I had to do this
because pulseaudio doesn't detect it automatically and I have to add it
manually in default.pa).
Maybe it has something to do with this.

[Bug 415582] [NEW] Asus DRW-1608P2S unable to burn DVDs

Public bug reported:

Asus DRW-1608P2S DVD-RW burner destroys all DVDs, no matter what burning
software is used. K3b for example gives out a write error upon
completing the burning. There are no messages in dmesg.

Burning CDs works, but I have not been able to write a single DVD since
around Ubuntu 6.04 (can't remember exactly which version).

Also, while burning CDs or DVDs the computer becomes virtually unusable,
because of some kind of lag. The CPU never gets above 10%, but the
system acts as if some process was using all of the CPU power. Assuming
it is a DMA issue.
