[Bug 1860875] Re: Ub 20.04 impossible to start on PC HP

2020-02-16 Thread winux
Hi
I come back to the HP of the top list. I've tried again on today's version
(2020-02-16). I saw a new kernel coming up, but no change. The screen remains
all black for ... ever !!

Another point to clarify the situation
The HP which doesn't start is EFI
The Asus laptop and a tower, self mounted, which work fine, are MBR.
Does it help ?

[Bug 1860875] [NEW] Ub 20.04 impossible to start on PC HP

2020-01-25 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

I've tried in vain to launch the Ub20.04 live-key in order to install
and test on HP Envy x360 15w100nf born in 2016. But I have nothing but a
black screen all process long, even after 10 minutes waiting when I
decided to stop it !!

I already had a Pb of log which swelled quickly, whose solution was given by a
forum.
At startup I entered in the boot menu: "e" > line linux > pcie_aspm = off

Is there another trick so that I can test this version on this damn PC?

It works fine on Asus 2010

Thanks for your help

[Bug 1784217] [NEW] impossible to install Ubuntu 18.041 on HP Envy X360

2018-07-29 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hello

I am currently working on a HP Envy X360 15-w100nf PC
equipped with realtek wifi card module rtl8723be (it's important you'll see why)

Brief history:
problems started with the update of 16.04 about 3 weeks ago, because 2 logs
were filling up at a phenomenal speed (30 GB in 5 minutes) saturating my
partition Ubuntu yet 40 GB!
The solution has been found thanks to a valuable help from the forum, always so
effective:
https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=2028634

It consisted of changing a line of the grub file
by adding: "pcie_aspm = off"
to the following line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash pcie_aspm =
off"
Since everything is back in order
I think it was important to give you this information before continuing

Now back to the subject of this bug report
I launched the live key Ub18.04.1 > I arrived well on the desktop normally
at the first launch, clicked on:
- terminal: no answer
- files: no answer
- parameters: no answer
- power: no answer, etc ...

So I had to press long on power button

I start again, this time I go further ... a little !!
I went up to French-French Azerty, and then this message
http://i66.tinypic.com/r0cfo5.jpg

I think it's the same problem as in 16.04, but stuck because it occurs
in the live key when I did not have it in 16.04 because my live was
16.04.4 and not 5.

thanks in advance for bringing a solution at all the HP users because I
happened not to be the only one

PS: I checked the correct transfer of the iso file with md5sum

[Bug 1784101] [NEW] Ubuntu partition fills automatically

2018-07-28 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

When I first updated Ubuntu 16.04.4, about 3 weeks ago, I found out being
rapidly short of disk memory on the partition, and then could not even make a
screenshot.
I went to the French forum and after a long search we found out that
"pcie_aspm" was responsible for that.

Actually it fills up very rapidly 2 logs (the 2 last ones on the following list)
*
 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo du -ma --max-depth=1 /mnt/5 | sort -n

Yesterday, after reseting the logs ...

... I rebooted normally (no live key)
and after 5 mn I found out, from gparted, that my partition reached 37 Go,
close to its max 39 Go
The only way to shutdown was a long press on the Power button, otherwise it was
a continuing flow of error messages

A clever guy from the forum gave me the solution by adding "pcie_aspm" in the
grub
I changed, on the following file, "sudo nautilus /etc/default/grub"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
into
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off"

And it works !!! my partition never exceed 7 Go
I wanted to notify you about this important point which blocked my PC and, from
the forum, I realized I was not the only one

Thanks for you action on future update

[Bug 1773885] Re: files slip under the dock (when download or save as)

2018-05-30 Thread winux
Well ... actually not completely solved ...
because if you plug an USB key, the position on the Desk is upper left corner,
and if there is already a file or a folder at this position, the icon key jumps
onto it.
It's confusing to have 2 icons at the same place!!

[Bug 1773885] [NEW] files slip under the dock (when download or save as)

2018-05-28 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

In order to save time, my download location is Desktop then if, from
Firefox, I download an attached file, it slips under the dock (see
attachment)

I face the same situation if, from Libre Office writer, I save as ... on
the Desktop

I know I should not compare Dash to Dock with Unity, but the fact is
that ... never happened with the previous launcher, sorry!

Have a nice day

Re: [Bug 1760271] [NEW] Scan does not operate on my HP multifunction laser

2018-03-31 Thread winux
New info

I installed Lubuntu 18.04 and found out that the scanner worked
So I reinstalled the laser on Ubuntu 18.04 and it happened to work that
time.
It was not a bug, sorry, just an installation that did not work-out fine

[Bug 1715993] [NEW] At start-up, non dock icons are under the dock

2017-09-08 Thread winux
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1696621 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1696621

Public bug reported:

One way to get the icons not under the dock is to click on any icon of the dock.
They switch automatically from under the dock to next to the dock, as it should
be without doing any action.
Just like on attachment 1

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 1715989] [NEW] right click on dock screen shot icon is not working properly

2017-09-08 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Right click (see attachment 1) is fine for 1st and 2nd choice, but not for the
3rd one:
Take a screenshot of a selected area
Actually the shape of the mouse pointer is still the same instead of changing
into a cross to select the desired area.

Re: [Bug 1713331] [NEW] Lubuntu 17.10: impossible to update languages

2017-08-28 Thread winux
Same issue w/ another laptop more recent (2016) and more powerful i5-6200,
RAM = 4 Go.
And also 64 bits EFI instead of 32 bits MBR.

uname -a
Linux micronet 4.12.0.11-generic #12-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 11 12:26:42:UTC
2017 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So it's a general problem of this Lubuntu 17.10 which is not released yet,
then the bug can be fixed on time ... hopefully, Thx

[Bug 1713331] [NEW] Lubuntu 17.10: impossible to update languages

2017-08-27 Thread winux

update to French some applis still in English

(all the following is an approximate translation, because these parts are
actually in French)
I go to: preferences > languages update
- 1st windows in response: languages not completely installed

I received and read your wiki to find the appli package, but "my bug" just
corresponds to "drag and drop" which does not seem to be an appli package.
How can I help you then ?

[Bug 1710366] [NEW] Cannot activate NumLock

2017-08-12 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

I'm running Artful updates 2012-08-12
Even if I reproduce what I did for Unity, NumLock is never automatically
activated

Here is what I did:
sudo apt-get install numlockx
sudo nano /etc/gdm3/Init/Default
Add before "exit 0":
if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
exec /usr/bin/numlockx on
fi

Re: [Bug 1565106] Re: Wifi works on W10 but not on Ub 16.04 nor 14.04

2017-05-07 Thread winux
Hi Christopher

Are you sure?
Because as far as I understood, 16.04 is a LTS and shoud last 5 years,
actually I'm running 17.04 which is a STS (9 months), meaning that myself
and others will have to install 18.04.

I say others because yesterday I wanted to install 16.04 on a friend's PC
(an Asus), but same Pb as on the HP, no wifi, I had then to install 17.04,
but he/I will have to install 18.04 as well, is it a normal procedure not
to reverse the bug fix to the LTS till this version is supported ?

Have a nice day anyway and again congratulation to the team

Ok Christopher, Thx for your answer
In order not to reinstall too often, I suggest to do it once the 17.04 is
released, i.e. in about one month.
I'll keep you informed.

2017-02-21 Thread winux
Hello Christopher

Maybe you forgot me from the time being, but I wanted to keep you informed
about the evolution of this issue.
Actually it works now, on this particular PC, after having installed
version 16.10 non LTS unfortunately.
But still not OK on 16.04 even after updates, s
I'm very pleaded of this evolution.
The only drawback is that I always start wifi off, whatever the situation
when I closed.

I think this bug is resolved for 95%
Have a nice day

Re: [Bug 1565106] Re: Wifi works on W10 but not on Ub 16.04 nor 14.04

2016-06-26 Thread winux
Hi Christopher
I did as much as I can, as long as English is not my mother tongue.
I filled-out the check-list provided by your wiki here below, but I did not
understand how to forward it to TO Larry Finger CC linux-wireless, sorry

Can you help me please because we are close to succeed with kernel experts
assistance, I feel it!!

Moreover, you have to know that I leave for 1 week in an "internet desert"
so I won't be able to answer before next second monday night, sorry

Here are the answers down below

1-Summary of the problem
laptop "HP Envy x360 15-w100nf". Everything's fine except wifi
Wifi works on W10 but not on Ubuntu 16.04

2-Full description of the problem/report
after installing new kernel 4.7 (on bug team recommendation), RJ45 connected
I rebooted a firt time (on 4.7)
took RJ45 out
no wifi

I connected RJ45 to install Chromium
rebooted a 2nd time, RJ45 out, no wifi

I rebooted a 3rd time, RJ45 out, wifi was visible (see the picture below)
http://i68.tinypic.com/29479ly.png

I did not connect to my wifi box (no wifi password declaration)
rebooted
no wifi again

I shut-off / shut-on power supply
wifi is back
I've been connected to it (see picture below)
http://i64.tinypic.com/fuumat.png

I shut-off / shut-on power supply again to check a 2nd time
NO wifi

I reboot
NO wifi, same

Finally, as usual, when I do a major change (reinstall, but no improvement
this time) or upstream kernel, I've got Wifi just ONCE which means my card
is recognized by Ubuntu once, but never again.sh
Looks like a sort of flag is marked somewhere which no longer allows wifi

3-kernel version
$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 4.7.0-040700rc4-generic (kernel@gloin) (gcc version 5.4.0

Hi Christopher
Sorry I misunderstood your point. Nevertheless I was surprised to have to
generate another bug.
So we continue on this post.

Regarding your question
"I started w/ RJ45 connected and finally I got wifi from my box."
This happened just once in the past. I reinstalled ubuntu from scratch but
no wifi at all.

To clarify, is it consistently reproducible that if you plug in an ethernet
cord, and then boot up WiFi works?

2016-06-18 Thread winux
Hi Christopher

I've followed your recommendations.
I downloaded the following kernel:
linux-headers-4.7.0-040700rc3-generic_4.7.0-040700rc3.201606121131_amd64.deb

Followed the installation guide, but it did not word because of
dependencies.

Here is the response on the terminal, in French.
In short it means "depencies issues avoided configuration of linux header

linux header ... packet has not been installed"

*What do you recommend please, because I'm stuck w/this issue*

*Best regards*

2016-05-14 Thread winux
Hi Jo

Finally I could install the new kernel after an ultimate update & upgrade.
Here is the result:

on the old PC: no change, no wifi

On the brand new one:
I started with RJ45 ethernet OK
then I unplugged RJ45
impossible to activate wifi

I rebooted
wifi OK

I made a stop/start
impossible to activate wifi

I made sure I was in 4.6
$uname -a
 Linux PCi 4.6.040600rc7generic

On top of that, same as with the previous kernel, I cannot start the W10
volume, even though the W10 quick start is inhibated

Seems good news but ... for the recent 64 bits HP PC, I did the following
...

I went to your link, downloaded
linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc7-generic_4.6.0-040600rc7.201605120803_amd64.deb
Then I clicked on install button but nothing happened. I'm still with
4.4.0-18-generic version

Same story with the old PC with
linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc7-generic_4.6.0-040600rc7.201605120803_i386.deb

2016-04-29 Thread winux
Some additional news.

I've asked to a PC integrator company to do the following job on any recent
laptop. The brand is not important to me, I just want wifi in operation.

>From a W10 UEFI laptop PC, they have installed, in dual boot, Ubuntu 16.04,
no problem, but even them could not acivate wifi.

they did the trial on Asus and Toshiba PCs.

So I guess there is a problem with Ubuntu wifi on recent UEFI PCs, don't
you think so?
Then it would be a key issue for the people who buy a laptop, because wifi
is compulsory.

Thank you to think it over, because so far I'm stuck with the HP PC and
need to switch to W10 Wifi which is not my objective

[Bug 694968] Re: Gthumb : no batch resizing any more !!??!!

2011-01-02 Thread winux
That's very good news Mike. I feel more relax now. I did not want to
look for another s/w because this one is just perfect for me (after this
bug removal!!).

Thx for your answer, I'll install the new version right axway.

I think we can close the issue then

Have a nice day Mike (BTW, I like your humour, British???)

[Bug 694968] [NEW] Gthumb : no batch resizing any more !!??!!

2010-12-28 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

I'm in Ubuntu 10.10. I'm running the latest Gthumb version: 2.11.3

This version is fine EXCEPT ONE THING

Why did you take away batch resizing which is very very useful

As many people, after selecting, on some photos, the part I want to
keep, I resize all of them to an acceptable size (e.g. 1600x1200).

I don't understand why this very useful feature disappeared? Many people
are complaining on the forums!!

Any logical explanation or just a one way (nonsense) decision?

Still the same on September 2nd version!!

May I remind you that this a MAJOR ISSUE for this version because on 2
different laptops, different brands, one cannot even boot the system up

The official release is, as far as I know, in 6 weeks time and, since
the time I originally related that BIG BUG (july 17th), the status is
still NEW and nobody in charge!! How can you leave such a situation with
something that does not work at all, I'm amazed.

I'm afraid I won't be able to use the new version of actually this
wonderful product

Hi Kurt

Very happy to find a human on the line. I followed your interested link,
but no result

1-Boot options
Once I saw something on the screen, I pressed the shift key and hold it down,
but I still got the same sequence

2-initramfs : which seems to be the problem, same
I've tried:
debug -- /bin/sh: debug: not found
httpd -- /bin/sh: httpd: not found
break -- back to -- (initramfs)

Sorry but I cannot get thru this message:
no init found

Any other suggestion to find WHY the init is not found

I'm surprised to be the only one complaining because this happened on 2
different PC and 2 different USB keys

Thx for your (future) help to try to go any further on

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more

[Bug 606631] [NEW] Ubuntu netbook 10.10 live : NOT working

2010-07-17 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

Preliminary
In order to try live CD on my Netbook MSI U130, I had to make a live key. The
program to do so, coming from Ubuntu, doesn't work, so I used Unetbootin. It
worked beautifully with Ubuntu netbook 10.04. So I did the same with 10.10
alpha 2, today's version july 17, and IT DID NOT WORK

What I did with Ubuntu netbook 10.10
I did the same as before, on the same USB key, but at boot start I got a
message error
(see attachment boot screenshot on MSI U130)

Then I followed the suggestion and entered : init=bootarg
I went a bit further but still an error message

I've tried another key : same

I've tried it on another PC : HP Compaq 6510b
another error

So it never works whatever key or PC

Thx for correcting the bug, because I love the netbook version on 10.04
and I'd like to test 10.10

[Bug 560564] [NEW] cannot activate the bip when pressing Cap Lock key

2010-04-11 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

I'm on Lucid, 4 April version, updated this day April 11th

Sorry for the approximate English translation, but I run a French version.
Actually this bug is lasting from Jaunty.

I'm supposed to activate this notification bip by doing the following:

system preferences accessibility tool tick the box: activate
accessibility tools click on button: keyboard accessibility
accessibility tab tick the box: allow activation and deactivation of
accessibility functions through keyboard shortcuts
click on button: sound return click on the first 2 boxes

Even though, no sound when I press on the caplock button

I noticed that on all my different PCs with Lucid installed or with Live
CD

[Bug 559174] [NEW] Invisible item line separation on the new theme

2010-04-09 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

I like the new black theme, BUT the dark separation line between item is
hardly visible, e.g in system preference.

This line should be white or yellow to draw attention. Same thing on the
dash-board (the upper toolbar)

This is the only drawback I can see regarding this very nice theme

OK next time it happens, as you know, I've got to reboot, no other
option.

So after reboot, what do you suggest me to do?

I'm willing to provide every info you need. Just tell me in what log to
search and how to do it. I'll give you everything I can

[Bug 557606] Re: CANNOT CHANGE START MENU

2010-04-08 Thread winux
I've also tried adding -s, otherwise, as you said, there's a lot of
extra comments on the line.

To make sure I understand:

do you confirm this is a bug linked to a space problem in GRUB
DISTRIBUTOR? In that case I stop trials waiting for bug correction

Otherwise if you know what to do so far, please just let me know

Have a nice day. BTW, this is a wonderful version

OK I'll try again on the last version end this month

2010/4/8 Colin Watson cjwat...@canonical.com

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's due to the space. Temporary workaround is to
 make this change to /etc/grub.d/10_linux:

  - CLASS=--class $(echo ${GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR} | tr '[A-Z]' '[a-z]')
 ${CLASS}
  + CLASS=--class $(echo ${GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR} | tr '[A-Z]' '[a-z]' | cut
 -d' ' -f1) ${CLASS}

(I've committed such a change upstream and will backport it for the next
 grub2 upload to Lucid.)

[Bug 557065] [NEW] frozen mouse/ keyboard

2010-04-07 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Hi

As every 6 months I need to report the SAME bug which lasts for 3
versions so far!

I'm testing Lucid beta1 loaded on april 4th, and as for Karmic and
Jaunty, my mouse has frozen after 3 minutes working. My PC is then
blocked and my only solution is rebooting.

I cannot give you the release of ubuntu because when I type 'lsb_release -rd'
the answer is command not found
usb-creator-gtk version is : 0.2.21

Could you please do something about this MAJOR bug which occured on 3
different versions, and on differnt PCs

Thx so much

[Bug 557607] [NEW] CANNOT CHANGE START MENU

2010-04-07 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub-pc

Hi

I'm on Ubuntu Lucid, version of April 4th

Actually, despite Ubuntu doc, I cannot change anything in the start
menu line corresponding to Lucid start.

I wanted to have the start menu looking like this: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, Linux
2.6.32 ….
instead of: Ubuntu , Linux 2.6.32 …. (with no version #, what kind of Ubuntu is
it, 9.10 - 10.04?)

So, as the doc says, in /etc/default/grub, I replaced
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2 /dev/null || echo Debian`
By
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`echo -n $(lsb_release -cir 2 /dev/null || echo Debian)`
Then : sudo update-grub
And reboot

Big surprise: in the start menu the only thing remaining was Windows
Seven!! a shame!

I've tried to investigate and did the following:
As previously, I changed the line in /etc/default/grub, but I did not replace
–i –s, I just added -r to it

That means that if you change anything behind the - argument, grub is
lost and displays NOTHING regarding the current version.

I did the same thing in Karmic, but it worked. Hope you can fix this
