2011-07-17 Thread Jurgen Gaeremyn
Hi Martijn,

Just wondering... what's your status on this event?
Next Thursday (or if you're not available August 4th) we'd like to hear
a little status update on this. Could you be present on the meeting?

I didn't get any feedback on the installment meeting - did this happen?

Grtz,
Jurgen.

If it has been agreed that I'm not taking the lead, please ignore this mail.

Now, for customization, I can tell you from personal experience it
isn't as straightforward as it looks. Here's the steps I've taken
before (from the top of my head, so might not be 100% accurate):

 1. mount the iso in eg /mnt/iso
 2. mount the squashfs in eg /mnt/squashfs
 3. change the squashfs
 4. recompile the suqashfs
 5. change the iso using an iso tool
 6. test

I used this setup to created a customized installation cd for my
client, using RedHat. The approach should be similar for Ubuntu.

 kindest regards,

 Martijn

And this step is comprised of many substeps that many often forget (e.g.
after removing or installing packages, you need to clean up temporary
files cache files created used by APT/dpkg, as you don't want
useless cruft in the live-cd image).

Re: [Ubuntu-be] ubuntu cd/dvd

2011-06-06 Thread Bram Gadeyne
Hi all,

Using UCK does not provide a lot of possibilities.

I've received this dvd by mail today. It's size is 3.4 GB so it's a normal
DVD.

I think they created it using casper and some other things:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

Since you have to include grub I think it should be possible to add
different bootable distro's. On the dvd there is a directory for every
distro containing vmlinuz, initrd.lz and filesystem.squashfs. The last one
contains the contents of the distro.

Anyone who would like to join forces and try to create such a cd/dvd. First
with a single customized distro and then maybe different ones?

Maybe we can look and learn :)

Here's a link:

I believe that isn't a normal dual layer
dvd..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-R_DL
A dual layer dvd of normal size only has 8.5 GigaBytes..So I think it is
possible they have a dual side dvd (and in that case I wonder if they really
just put the whole ISO on, not using the fact that like 50% of every ISO is the
same..)

Thanks for your reply Steven. But if I'm correct it's not really what I'm
looking for. The dvd version only contains several extra packages but not
several distro's.

Maybe I should translate my question:

Many people contact me to obtain a CD-version of the latest ubuntu release.
Maybe it would be nice to provide a (personalized) dvd version whitch
contains multiple distro's (ubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu) and also the 32 and
64 bit versions of these distro's. I have no idea in how to create this.

WIth kind regards

iemand tegelijk ook weten hoe je dit kan personaliseren met een menu en
standaard selectie Nederlands en dergelijke dan is dit ook welkom.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] ubuntu cd/dvd

2011-05-26 Thread wouter Vandenneucker

Hey bram,
I suppose you could just add the packages kubuntu-desktop, edubuntu-desktop and
then install 2 times (1x 32bit and 1x 64bit).
I'm not sure how big this would be, and neither if it's possible to make a grub
for that. I'll check Linux User Developer Magazine later today. They've got a
DVD with 3 Distro's every month.Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how they
put those on DVD.
As for Customization/Personalization, I propose we kick the engine on the
customized U-be iso. I've put the subject on the AGENDA for tonight.I'm have no
doubt there are some people on this ML who'd love to help, creating that ISO
with you. (I for instance.. and 8 others on the page)If anyone on the ML wishes
to take the lead in this please do!
grts

Thanks for your reply Steven. But if I'm correct it's not really what I'm
looking for. The dvd version only contains several extra packages but not
several distro's.

Maybe I should translate my question:

Many people contact me to obtain a CD-version of the latest ubuntu release.
Maybe it would be nice to provide a (personalized) dvd version whitch contains
multiple distro's (ubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu) and also the 32 and 64 bit
versions of these distro's. I have no idea in how to create this.

I know what you meant...
and someone asked thesame question in 2006 but didn't get an answer as
well: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=188632

with the UCK tool you can not only add the full language packs for
Dutch/French/German and default to Belgian keyboard... you can also inject
it with both Gnome and Kde (ubuntu and Kubuntu flavor)...
you could also add xubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, lubuntu-desktop,
unity-2d
you could add these missing packages which you lack... and let people choose
at boot if they want gnome, kde, ...

on the other hand... you could UCK the 3 iso's (ubuntu/kubuntu/edubuntu) for
a localized version... and put them on the dvd ... there will be a lot of
overlap offcoarse... and offer a multiboot menu:
perhaps a nice tool is this as it's also USB stick ready :
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

I'm not sure what is the most effective approach here:
- 32bit version with X-L-K-Ed-Ubuntu- 64bit version with X-L-K-Ed-Ubuntu
OR
- 32bit Kubuntu- 32bit Ubuntu- 32bit Edubuntu- 64bit Kubuntu- 64bit Ubuntu-
64bit Edubuntu
About that second option: Would it be possible to put all the packages on the

imho an edubuntu-desktop is just an ubuntu with more educational

the edubuntu-desktop contains the following:

   - ubuntu-edu-preschool - Preschool ( 5 years old) educational
   application bundle
   - ubuntu-edu-primary - Primary ( ages 6-12) educational application

   - ubuntu-edu-secondary - Secondary ( ages 13-18) educational application

I haven't played much with edubuntu... don't know if it's all in Dutch

and for kubuntu people you can install *edubuntu*-*desktop*-kde (but not all
educational software is ported to KDE or contains kde-only material so it
will install gnome stuff like Gcompris as far as I know
