Dell pays for (some of) their machines to be Ubuntu Certified, plus fixed costs (including the developers Dell employs to work on Ubuntu) have to be spread over less machines, so I don't care about paying a little more or less either. OTOH, if they want to sell more machines with Ubuntu, they should make it easier for people to buy machines with Ubuntu. The hoops one has to jump through currently are annoying enough to keep those machines outside the hands of most potential buyers (especially outside the US). Hi, I recently bough a Lenovo ThinkPad R500 which seems to work well with 10.04. Previously, I had a Dell Insprion 1520 which worked well. In my experience, basic hardware compatibility is rarely an issue for laptop from big vendors but checking the actual hardware specs against know Linux issue is a must do if you want to avoid any trouvle. For the gfx card, both NVidia and ATI offers free as in beer drivers but I've had issue with both when it comes to dual-screen. Ubuntu 10.04 has free as in speech drivers for both now, but the NVidia one (nouveau) is very recent and lacks many feature and doesn't support desktop effects, or with very limited performances. Finding a laptop with no Windows licence is hard. Some vendors are nicer than others when it comes to refunding. For French speakers, you can check http://bons-vendeurs-ordinateurs.info/ and http://bons-constructeurs-ordinateurs.info/ for FLOSS friendly laptop (and desktop too). Op mijn school kunnen studenten kiezen uit een 15 of 17 inch model. 17 blijft transporteerbaar en tegenwoordig kunnen de batterijen toch zeker 2,5 a 3 uur meegaan. Als het een lichter model is al zeker. HP heeft zeer goede modellen daarin, al zijn die aan de duurdere kant. Ik kan op dat vlak ook Toshiba en Dell aanraden. Hello Jean, I bought a Packard Bell Easynote TJ61 for 379 euro at Carrefour, which also refunded 39 euro for "not agreeing with the Microsoft Licence Agreement" and installing Ubuntu (nice from de "klantendienst"!). It works perfectly under Ubuntu (10.04 now) and manages 2 hours battery independence when on Wifi, nearly 3 hours otherwise but bigger batteries are for sale separately. Webcam, analog and digital audio, DVD reader-writer SD cardreaders, HDMI and analog 2nd screen outputs: all work perfectly with the original Ubuntu drivers... The 15.6" screen reacts somewhat faster with the available non open driver to the ATI videocard. Only downside: no native bluetooth onboard so I had to buy a USB Bluetooth interface taking up one of 4 USB slots... I have been running ubuntu on it since new (three years ago) and it always worked pretty well. I recently installed 10.04 without any problems. Battery life is OK, especially if you switch off your network card. Mine has been travelling throughout Europe and Africa on a daily basis. Still no glitches after three years of intensive usage (touch wood). I'm sure the newer models perform better still. Regards, Jan.
