[Bug 54222] Mountpoints disappears

2006-07-27 Thread Bjørn Ingmar Berg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Scenario: Installing Ubuntu 6.06 on a computer that already had the
redmond alternative os, and two NTFS partitions. Selecting to manually
edit the partition table.

Problem: In the "Prepare Mount points" window the mount points for the
NTFS partitions got reset / blanked by accident. (/media/hda1
/media/hdb1) Pressing the "Back" button and then the "Forward" button
did not fill in these fields with the defaults again.

[Bug 54205] Re: font rendering broken in edgy

2006-07-27 Thread aurelien naldi
update: I have just launched a Qt app to check and it has the same problem, it
is not a gtk/pango thing.
I might be related with the last xft update:
 xft (2.1.10-1ubuntu1) edgy; urgency=low
 .
   * Merged with Debian experimental
   * Fixed libfreetype6-dev Build-Depends

I have this version, I updated it without noticing at the same time as gtk
engines.
I just tried reverting to version 2.1.8.2 (from dapper) but this did not solve
my problem.
Any other idea ?

[Bug 54224] Re: Installer crasched.

2006-07-27 Thread Colin Watson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47848 ***

Thanks for your report. Due to some reliability problems with GRUB and
XFS, you need to use a non-XFS root filesystem or create a non-XFS /boot
filesystem. The fact that the partitioner doesn't warn you about this
up-front is also bug 47848, and is fixed in Edgy.

Even aside from the installer bug that you ran into here, I've tested
GRUB 0.97 with XFS and it still doesn't work reliably.

You are running under "Intel" version of Ubuntu Linux and mine is on
the PowerPC version.

With the default ubuntu kernel the kernel fails to recognise the
vendor ID.

In your case, you could probably try the latest drivers from
Serialmonkey or even Ralink. There is even a Ural driver. I have
tried all and none of them either compile correctly or work on PowerPC

[Bug 46848] Re: Does not report updates available

2006-07-27 Thread Topper
Ok here's my experience then :

I had regular update-notifications using Dapper beta. Now since Dapper LTS, it
seems the update-notification does'nt work anymore.
I still hear the typical HDD activity that precedes updates check every day,
but then the icon never shows up.
If I manually launch the update-manager and check for updates, there ARE
packages to be updated, now if I don't install them and just close the updater,
the notification icon shows up a few seconds after.

I have anacron installed and running as a service. So what's wrong ?

[Bug 54219] Re: crashing with "Arithmetic exception"

2006-07-27 Thread Colin Watson
The second backtrace looks a lot more accurate than the first;
ped_file_system_xfs_done doesn't do any arithmetic, while
_device_probe_geometry does. The change on that line from parted 1.6 to
1.7 was:

(1.6.25.1)
dev->hw_geom.cylinders
= dev->length / (dev->hw_geom.heads
 * dev->hw_geom.sectors)
/ (dev->sector_size / PED_SECTOR_SIZE);

(1.7.1)
dev->hw_geom.cylinders
= dev->length / (dev->hw_geom.heads
 * dev->hw_geom.sectors);

However, I think this change was accompanied by a number of other
significant rearrangements, so unfortunately it's probably rather
difficult to backport.

[Bug 54234] update-manager for edgy needs to upgrade dpkg early on

2006-07-27 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

 affects /distros/ubuntu/update-manager
 importance high

As I write in ubuntu-devel-announce:

  The dpkg in edgy now supports a new kind of dependency relationship,
  `Breaks'. This is like `Conflicts' but doesn't cause the
  deinstallation of the broken packages, merely their deconfiguration
  (to note that they're broken).

  In general, Breaks is intended to replace nearly all instances of
Conflicts: some-package (<< 0.1.2.3)
  or similar. It is now sensible to start using Breaks instead of
  Conflicts for this in edgy:
Breaks: some-package (<< 0.1.2.3)

  The dist-upgrader tool will arrange for upgrades from dapper to edgy
  to upgrade dpkg first; this means that this field will be honoured for
  packages released as part of edgy.
  ...

This latter paragraph implies a change to update-manager: it should
upgrade dpkg early on. It is very likely that changes to apt will be
involved too, so it would be good to update apt early as well if
that's not hopelessly difficult. See PackageDependencyFieldBreaks.

Thanks,
Ian.

[Bug 49107] Re: hplip cannot find DeskJet 5440 printer, despite CUPS's claims to the contrary

2006-07-27 Thread Michal Suchanek
OK, the gnome-cups-manager works for me after upgrading the remaining
pre-release gnome packages to current.

The cups interface works since I added cupsys to shadow and root to lpadmin (I
authenticate as root in cups). The failure when cupsys is not in the shadow
group is very nice - one gets a blank page, no error, and the operation is not
finished.

The hplip tools are much more helpful when the printer is installed using the
hp backend than when using the usb backend.

I wonder why the ink level monitor worked but the rest of the tools did
not.

In the gnome-cups-manager it is impossible to tell the usb backend from
the hp backend (except that the HP backend option is listed second - not
the default(!), and has spaces in the printer name). I guess some more
obvious distinction would be helpful. So would a sentence or two about
using printers with hplip when a hp backend printer is found.

Since Ubuntu is supposed to be user friendly I would expect that
connecting the printer and clicking through a few dialogs should be
enough to get the printer going.

If I read a HP Printer howto I would probably get the printer set up correctly
at the first try. But I thought it was the goal of Ubuntu to make the
distribution "BFU" friendly so I tried the "BFU" approach this time.
I'm sorry if my impression was wrong and I need lessly wasted your time.

Thanks for the help

[Bug 54238] microsoft.com crashes Konqueror

2006-07-27 Thread Pupeno
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konqueror

I know I know, why do I want to go to microsoft.com ? I don't, but having it
crashing Konqueror is not good. Konqueror should never crash.
Besides, if Microsoft's web site can crash Konqueror, Kubuntu's browser, it is
bad image.
Particularly I was reading a story about the new M$ homepage that doesn't work
on Firefox (and doesn't on Konqueror either of course) so I clicked on a link
to see the lame message "we won't support your browser"; instead, Konqueror
crashed and with it I lost many other tabs with information I was interested in.

No. /usr/lib/gnome-applets/gweather-applet-2 just exits silently when

[Bug 38198] Re: Garbled using open source Radeon driver

2006-07-27 Thread kmedlin
I am using an ATI Radeon 7500 as well but on a Gateway Laptop.

Last night I downloaded the latest 6.0.6 Dapper desktop CD. It was
apparent even in the LiveCD that there was a graphical issue. I
installed it and the problems outlined above by others existed.

So that's a completely vanilla install with no config changes or driver
updates, or anything. I ran the update and downloaded the 130 updates
that were required thinking a fix might be already out there and nothing
changed.

My problem looks exactly like the screenshot above.

want to fix the problem. The user forums are full of messages relating
to this problem if you care to take a look. I just happened to be the
only one who would "dare" to file a bug. Who would dare find a bug ?

I of source have no control of when you do or do not call a bug a bug.
