I'm testing a modified tree with these two patches cherry-picked and

[Bug 54627] Re: http USER-AGENT remains unused at h.u.c

2006-08-01 Thread Graham Crumb
I think even we need to be careful about making functionality
assumptions based on USER-AGENT. I can think of a few scenarios where
the example you provide would be counter-productive. The most obvious
one is someone trying to learn more before upgrading. As a corrolary to
that, I run my personal workstation much closer to the bleeding edge
than the workstations I support. Most of them are still on breezy.

One place where I *do* see some benefit in sniffing the user-agent
header is software downloads. But there's not much call for that because
apt-get takes care of that issue for us. 8^)

Maybe it's a X11 keyboard design or GTK or whatever.
After moving form Windows, text processing experience is much worse because of
not being able to quickly mark long sequences of words with

Thank you. I did not realize that it wound up being disabled, but
somehow or another it did.

I re-added it back to the sources.list file and everything seems to work
again, which is good. I apologize for the ignorant bug report—I was too
confused to know where to look, since it seemed to be getting some
software and not others.

[Bug 38336] Re: Lack of support for hotplugging and Dapper kernel

2006-08-01 Thread willmeister
Any updates on this bug? The last post is over two months old and as
far as I can tell, the problem still exists (Graphire3). Plugging in
the tablet (from a cold boot) and installing as written above works, but
when the tablet is unplugged, it requires a reboot to get it working
again.

(Much) Worse, the system will usually freeze after unplugging the tablet
--this occurs on 3 different up-to-date Dapper systems. It's not a
kernel panic, the mouse/KB just stop working, I can ssh in and reboot,
but the local user is helpless.

I haven't experimented yet with compiling the 0.74 driver from source
(or the debian sid repos), but I have a feeling it would work. It would
be awesome if this worked correctly--Ubuntu has the best wacom support
of any distro I've tried. By updating the wacom-tools package in the
repository and fixing the /dev/input/wacom vs /dev/wacom thing, it could
be perfect.

The iMac G5 needs to be part of the official Ubuntu dev/release cycles,
not an afterthought.

If we want a Linux that takes endless debugging, Googling, and hacking,
well, why use Ubuntu for that? Any other distro will do. The whole
point of Ubuntu was regular packaging and compatibility testing. If the
Ubuntu team is not going to do that for iMac G5's then it should be
removed from the list of supported hardware. That would be sad but at
least more honest.

[Bug 53208] Re: [EGDY] Regression from 2.6.17-2 to 2.6.17-5

2006-08-01 Thread L Jones
You haven't changed anything, but the driver used to access your hard
drive has probably changed from ide to lib-ata. This changes the
identifier for the drive. My pata hard drive formally found at /dev/hda
is now /dev/sda. If possible check the dmesg output to see how the drive
is being discovered. (I had to boot in text mode, not splash to see it.)

Automatic translation to use UUIDs should have taken place for
/boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab when you upgraded.

[Bug 54880] Does not support Linux PCI domains

2006-08-01 Thread Ben Collins
Public bug reported:

The topic of PCI domains seems to be recocurring on the xorg lists. Saw
lots of discussion, lots of patches, and lots of procrastinating.

I have an OpenPower IBM PPC-64 server provided to Canonical/myself that
needs PCI domain support.

I'm attaching a patch that I used. It's generic support, which means
this also will fix sparc64 PCI domain issues aswell (in fact, the source
of the patch shows that they tested it with an UltraSPARC E250).

Please provide this in edgy. Would be really nice if it were possible to
provide in dapper, but not important.

[Bug 22336] Re: laptop overheats when performing CPU intensive tasks.

2006-08-01 Thread Chris Moore
I run ubuntu and debian on the same laptop. ubuntu crashes if I use the
CPU for more than a few minutes at a time, debian doesn't. I can tell
when ubuntu is about to power down because the fan in the laptop starts
running at full speed continuously, making quite a loud noise, whereas
in debian the fan alternates between full speed and something slower.
It's as if debian is noticing that the fan isn't able to cool the CPU
enough and does something to make the CPU generate less heat, whereas
ubuntu doesn't.

What are the significant differences between ubuntu and debian with
regards to the CPU speed management? Hopefully I can find a way of
either reproducing the problem in debian, or making it disappear in
ubuntu - but what should I tinker with?

[Bug 54875] FGLRX Upgrade Slows OpenGL Screensavers

2006-08-01 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

Hi,

I upgraded my FGLRX driver to 8.25.18 when it was released a day or two
ago (at the same time as linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-26-686), and
now I'm noticing a severe reduction in (some) OpenGL performance.

The output of fglrxinfo is:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

so it *is* using the ATI acceleration. Unreal Tournament is still fine,
and fgx_glxgears runs pretty fast (hundreds of FPS, depending on window
size).

OpenGL-based screensavers, however, have been decimated. They're really
slow and jumpy, where they used to be as smooth as... well, something
smooth. I don't know what the screensavers do that a game doesn't, but
whatever it is, that's where the problem is.

The results you gave from /proc/acpi/battery and from HAL seem
consistent to me. It clearly indicates that once the battery charged
your laptop stops using the AC and works on battery. Did you notice
anything that can actually confirm this ?

It looks like a hardware bug or a BIOS misconfiguration. We could as
well suspect the Linux kernel. Do you have any other operating system

[Bug 54871] Dapper install partitioning tool fails on uncommon extened partitions

2006-08-01 Thread mario
Public bug reported:

I've tried last week to install Dapper Drake over my Breezy Whatever
test installation on my hda8. Installation failed however at the
partitioning step, because I meanwhile modified my hard disk
partitioning table.

NOTE:
This is not a bug report, just a complaint. Bug won't happen for a enough users
to be worth to fix.

DETAILS:
I had an orphaned/unlinked main (MBR) partition, which starts at the cylinder
boundary, like all main partitions. Since all four slots were however occupied
meanwhile, but I wanted to access the data on it, I had to hack it into the
extended partitions chain.

Partitions in the extendeds chain now typically start at a head boundary
(63 sectors later than a main partition in one of the four MBR slots
would), because the entry for a (type 0x05 / 0x85) extended partition
chain table already occupies the sector at the cylinder boundary.

So that made me add/introduce it as my new /dev/hda9 into the extpart
table of /dev/hda8. Typically an extpart table only contains one real
subpartition and an optional link to another extpart table, whereas my
new one contained two real subpartitions instead.

And now here's the story:

Besides the uncommonnes of this partitioning sheme, the Linux kernel
very well can access all my partitions (hda1 to hda9).

Vanilla fdisk however can only detect up to hda8 and discards the hda9
entry as garbage (and would dispose it onto saving back a new mbr with
its extpart chain), because it only expects/handles one real
subpartition per extpart table.

The Dapper Drake install partitioning tool however, COMPLETELY FAILS and
discards all my partitions - unlike the kernel and fdisk which provided
a graceful fallback at least.

Now obviously, a setup tool can't match itself with an operating system in
terms of functionality and support for such convoluted pseudo-standards as x86
partitioning. But I'm somewhat disappointed nevertheless here, because this
reveals another unneeded case of wheeloritis or NIH syndrome.
If fdisk already supports partitioning in a sane way, then why was its proved
and more reliable code not reused for the Dapper setup/partitioning tool?

HOW TO FIX:
Please repost into appropriate subprojects bugreport list.

** Affects: Ubuntu
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed
