[Bug 57787] Obscure scary warning in installer.

2006-08-26 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I found the following warning misleading and obtuse

"WARNING: This will destroy all data on any partitions you have removed
as well as on the partitions that are going to be formatted.

The following partitions are going to be formatted:
partition #9 of /dev/hdc as swap
 partition #3 of /dev/hdc as ext3"

I believe that in this case no data will be erased; that all data will
be created from unpartitioned space. This warning does not make it clear
whether this is the case.

Also, "Partition #9" will mean nothing to an end user. They would really want
to know "what data is on partition #9". The following would have more meaning:
What are the current contents of hdc9? (I.e. have a button that allows user
to browse hdc9 in Nautilus)
Is partition #9 a new or empty partition?
If #9 is not empty, how much space is used?
  How big is #9?

Also to a savvy user /dev/hdc9 would be more clear than " partition #9
of /dev/hdc".

[Bug 57789] Amarok skips some tracks without reason

2006-08-26 Thread Dave Suffling
Public bug reported:

When advancing from the end of one track, amarok will start to play the
next track, but then go on to play the track which follows. This is
detectable because of crossfading, and it known (or just more frequently
noticed) when using queued tracks.

To aid in duplication, my usual usage pattern calls for the 'random'
metaplaylist set to list 50 tracks. I repopulate the list, pick five or
six tracks to queue, then repeat until my queue reaches a good size.

I should add that the effect occurs only some of the time. I haven't
found any rationale as to why some tracks are skipped (skipped tracks
can be requeued and will play the second time they come up.)

[Bug 57790] xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4_i386.deb significantly degrades performance of VMware Server 1.0.1

2006-08-26 Thread davescafe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Description:
The August 22 update of Xserver (xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4_i386.deb)
degrades performance of VMware server 1.0.1. A previously-installed virtual
machine of Windows XP takes significantly longer to boot and shut down than
prior to the update, and installs of new Windows XP virtual machines are so
slow that they cannot reasonably be installed at all. Downgrading
xserver-xorg-core to the previous version
(xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.1_i386.deb) restores VMware performance.

Environment:
Ubuntu 6.06 with all updates installed (plus or minus the xserver-xorg-core in
question)
VMware Server 1.0.1
Virtual Machine consisting of Windows XP Pro on a 20GB dynamic partition, 2
virtual processors and 512 MB virtual RAM assigned to the VM.

Hardware:
P4 1.3 Ghz
1GB RAM
Plenty of HDD space

Performance metrics:
xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.1_i386.deb (this version works as expected)
VM boot time: 0:50
VM shut down: 0:15
New VM install time: Approx 1 hour incl. Windows OS updates

xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4_i386.deb (this version degrades performance)
VM boot time: 2:12 to 3:09
VM shut down: 0:53 to 0:59
New VM install time: Install is so slow that the software appears hung. If I
had the patience, I suppose it could easily take four or more hours to install
the OS and updates.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 6.06, but do not upgrade to
xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4
2. Install VMware Server 1.0.1
3. Install a Windows XP Pro virtual machine on VMWare server.
Note performance and response time
4. Upgrade to xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4
Defect: Note degraded response time. Attempt to install a new Windows XP Pro
virtual machine and note degraded response time.

[Bug 44112] Re: 3D games crashed with voodoo3

2006-08-26 Thread Sod75
I confirm this bug on a voodoo banshee.
Direct rendering is enabled.
I tried the upgrading to a later version by using the edgy repositories. It
upgraded the xorg.core, xorg.tdfx (and all others) , glide3 , and installed a
new gcc package.
However i could get even less to run ,glxgears and glxinfo just hang after the
libGL "warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x42" messages
Full upgrade (in case I missed anything) of all available packages did not help
either.
I noticed nothing of value in the Xorg log file

If there's a cleaner way of testing what's in development just let me
know

[Bug 57791] It is possible to complete a game using Ctrl+F

[Bug 2462] Re: mail-notifcation hogging the CPU polling for GMail

2006-08-26 Thread Lyonel Vincent
Same thing here: network connectivity loss makes mail-notification consume 100%
CPU, which makes it very problematic on a laptop.
Forcing mail-notification to update its status (by running `mail-notification
-u`)seems to bring CPU usage back to normal (it doesn't prevent the problem
from popping back later, though).

[Bug 57791] Re: It is possible to complete a game using Ctrl+F

2006-08-26 Thread Micah Cowan
This is not a bug, it's a feature, available for the player to use or
not as he/she is inclined. At the very least, it doesn't permit a very
lazy sort of cheating, as the user must still click and re-click box
after box, trying Ctrl+F, sometimes getting a "fill" and sometimes not.

If you don't like cheating, feel free not to use it. :-)

[Bug 19390] Re: sometimes mounts both raw device and partition

2006-08-26 Thread didier
It's a bigger issue with hybrid CD (with both iso and hfs partitions.)

I'm using a small ppc rescue disk on a USB stick, (copied with dd)

mount:

/dev/sdb on /media/PPCRCD type iso9660
(rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/PPCRCD-1 type iso9660
(rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8)

sdb and sdb1 is are same thing but mac-fdisk -l /dev/sdb:
 /dev/sdb
#type namelength base( size )
 system
/dev/sdb1 Apple_partition_map Apple2 @ 1 ( 1.0k)
 Partition map
/dev/sdb2 Apple_HFS PPCRCD 102100 @ 16 ( 49.9M)
 HFS

And there's no way to get to /dev/sdb2 where the data are.
from a terminal:
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/sdb2 does not exist

It's the same when using a real CD (drive on hdc) and I suspect that
multi sessions CD have issues too.

[Bug 57796] automount and bad CD (Rock Ridge extensions)

2006-08-26 Thread didier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Hi
I have a CD made with something called DiscRecording 2.1.17f1 (from Apple?)

it's a folder with 26 files.
It works well on a Mac or a Windows box.
On Linux I'm seeing only 25 files.

isoinfo -R -i /dev/hdc returns
**BAD RRVERSION (56)

If I mount the disk without Rock Ridge it works.

Obviously as Linux is the only one using Rock Ridge extensions I'd be
nice if it triple checks for stuff like that (waste a lot of time on
this one).

[Bug 57797] Should include aoTuV Release 1 patch

2006-08-26 Thread Fabio Pedretti
Public bug reported:

Would be nice to include aoTuV [1] Release 1 patch to libvorbis. aoTuV is an
improved libvorbis encoder, that, while keeping ABI compatibility, gives many
improvement:
* better quality at all bitrates versus libvorbis-1.1.2 [2], giving aoTuV
better quality than other codec (AAC, MP3, MPC, WMA, ...) [3];
* support of quality down to -2 (32kb/s at 44kHz stereo), versus -1 (45kb/s at
44kHz stereo) of libvorbis-1.1.x;
* encoding speed 10% better thanks to the included Vorbis-OptSort patch
(improve ordering loop);

aoTuV Release 1 have just been releases. aoTuV Release 1 is the same as
of beta4.51 (released on 2005-11), renamed after a lot of testing of the
audio community (especially on hydrogenaudio forum [4]) and this is the
reccomended vorbis encoder [5].

Yes, it will be very good to have aoTuV version of vorbis library in Ubuntu. As
Ogg Vorbis in Linux world is the main lossy audio codec - having best version
of it by default in Ubuntu will give great motive to use this brilliant open

ok, added section on ADSL connections. I've included documentation about
PPPOE modems (again from the wiki), and USB modems still need to be

As for expanding the dialup modem section, I tried to do some work on

help with that from someone who knows about dialup modems would be

Expected behaviour: it should either create a KURLRequester object or,
if the method of calling it is wrong, provide information as to how.

It doesn't seem to be a general problem with kfile.so, as creating other

0.6.3-2ubuntu4 is back to not altering resolv.conf so its back to

Out of interest what are the "huge problems" that happen if NM is used

across is that if the dhcp lease is renewed while connected to the VPN
resolv.conf gets re-written away from the VPN settings - that could be
solved by stopping dhclient from updating resolv.conf though.

[Bug 57801] Re: Hp 712c does not physically print

2006-08-26 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
** Description changed:

+ Reported by Joe Lynch (https://launchpad.net/people/joe-e-lynch) as a
+ support question.
+
Alot of people have been having trouble with the HP 7xx series lately
because of the issue with /etc/pnm2ppa.conf (One needs to change
something about the version line). However I have a HP 712c and have
tried all of those changes yet my printer still does not work. The
wierd thing is that my printer is recognized and it completes jobs it
just won't print. So for instance, if I tell it to print a test page,
it sits there processing the job and then it tells me it has completed
the job, but nothing comes out of the printer. No errors of anything, I
checked /var/log/cups/error_log and no errors (it is set on Debug mode).
Any advice that would get my printer working (the only thing that did
not work after the switch to Dapper) would be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 50477] Re: Please backport newer rhythmbox to dapper-backports

2006-08-26 Thread jim
I have libsoup2.2.8 version 2.2.93-0ubuntu1 installed, it's in updates i
guess. When you install the new rhythmbox through apt it will update the
libsoup package as a dependency so i don't think that's a problem. Or
maybe (if it's possible) the new rhythmbox has to be compiled on a fresh
dapper install. I've tried the .deb and it works very well on my system.
Only annoyance that is not fixed is the fact that rhythmbox crashes when
using the dvd-drive (formatting dvd-rw or burning a dvd), but that's
probably a gstreamer problem.

[Bug 57802] [edgy] external monitor not well recognized

2006-08-26 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm using an updated edgy
When I plug my external monitor, which is a samsung syncmaster 710mp (LCD
device) I get the image on it, but it's truncated at the right, even after the
autoregolation (manual regolation is not possible). Very simply I can't view
the vertical "slice" where there is the red button which pops up the logout
menu.

normally the monitor (using windows) has these values:

[Bug 27892] Re: pcmcia subsystem not functional with kernel 2.6.15-10 (ioremap failed)

2006-08-26 Thread Václav Šmilauer
The problem still exists in kernel 2.6.17 from current edgy.

It seems to be yenta-socket kernel-side bug, since neither of the
drivers for the card inquestion (the ralink's one shipped with kernel
and the CVS development from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com (packaged by
http://ubuntu.lupine.me.uk/)) work.

As said, card-insertion is not recognized either, contrary to what used
to be with older kernels. I tried "acpi=noirq" and "irqpoll" kernel
options as suggested on some forums but it did not help.

There seem to be similar bugs (e.g. Malone #56251, which BTW mentions
things being OK with 2.6.8) but apparently affect realtively few people.

There is a new nvidia driver out now. Version 1.0-8774.

This doesn't appear to fix what we need, however. The only hint of this

Can anyone confirm that this does not help us?

[Bug 56692] Re: Radeon Mobility 7500: poor 2D performance, abysmal 3D performance

2006-08-26 Thread Mika Fischer
Some recent update fixed the 2D performance. It's still not as good as
under Windows but now it's acceptable.

The 3D problem remains, though...

It might have to do with the following error message I get when starting GL
apps:
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b

Searching for this leads to an X.org bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6624

There it is hinted that this might be a general DRI/Mesa bug since Intel
chips are also affected.

[Bug 57805] (some) gnome keybindings only work after restarting gnome-settings-daemon

2006-08-26 Thread Thomas Liebetraut
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have a special keyboard that has addiational (multimedia) keys. I use
setkeycodes to make the scancodes available for the system and xmodmap to make
them available in X. My customized xmodmap configuration also contains other
changes like some accent keys made dead while others remain "non-dead".
I found that the "official" way to apply those changes is to have the xmodmap
config at /etc/X11/Xmodmap, which is read by /etc/gdm/Init/Default when
starting gdm. This works fine, when I run "xmodmap -pke" after login, I have my
keys correctly set up and they emit evets as expected.
However, when I assign functions to my speial multimedia keys via System ->
Preferences -> Keybindings, they don't work. xev shows me that the keys work
fine. If I do a "killall gnome-settings-daemon" and wait for it to restart
automatically, the keybindings work correctly.
I searched for similar bugs and found that for some people it works if they put
their xmodmap config to ~/.xmodmap, but this doesn't work for me. I already
tried loading my xmodmap config at different points of the startup chain by
putting "xmodmap /etc/X11/Xmodmap" to different scripts in both, gdm and
Xsession.d, but I always got the same result: xmodmap seems to work, the keys
work and have to correct keysyms, but the keybindings in gnome don't work
before I restart gnome-settings-daemon.
I don't have anything related to it in my ~/.xsession-errors (somewhere someone
mentioned an error line there which indicated that the keysyms were not
registered (yet)).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Assign some additional keysyms to keycodes and put the corresponding xmodmap
file to either /etc/X11/Xmodmap or ~/.xmodmap or start it manually using some
of the many initialization scripts in gdm and xsession.
(for me, the multimedia keys have keycodes above 128)
2. Use Gnome's keybindings dialog to assign functions to the keys
3. Restart X

Result:
The keysyms are correctly assigned, the assigned functions for additional
multimedia keys do not work.

Workaround:
1. Restart gnome-settings-daemon after login (this also works if the restart is
performed using System -> Preferences -> Sessions -> Startup programs)
2. (alternatively) Reassign the keybindings to the exact same keys. This works
without restarting gnome-settings-daemon.

Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06.1 with latest packages from security, backports and
updates repositories.

[Bug 57807] getmail uses wrong gid/uid

Public bug reported:

/var/mail/.*.pop with uid 805, gid 12. Change permissions.))

I actually thought the permissions weren't set right so I checked, but
that didn't help. I even tried running it as root (!!!). getmail
actuallay has a protection and won't run as root, but the error-msg is
produced before the check.

Later on I found out that there is neither a gid 12 nor a uid 805 on a
newly installed ubuntu. So where do these ids come from? I think this
should definitely changed to work out of the box.

[Bug 57810] USB Wifi ZD1211 not working after reboot...

2006-08-26 Thread Jan Verbeke
Public bug reported:

My ZD1211 is perfectly working on Dapper.
I only have to unplug and plug it.
After a reboot, the device is not detected, not even visible with "lsusb".
If I then unplug it, and plug it in again, then everything is ok.

Actually not. Bug #19372 is about offline support while this bug is
about using the right proxy settings.

Is this still a problem? Can you reproduce it with a "clean" Firefox
(i.e. no plugins/extensions and a fresh profile) ?

[Bug 57809] Re: libpcsclite.so should be in libpcsclite1, not in libpcsclite-dev

2006-08-26 Thread Michael Bienia
gpg has an option to specify the name of the library to dlopen:
gpg --pcsc-driver=/usr/lib/libpcsclite.so.1

You can also include it in your gpg.conf.

This problem was also already reported in the Debian BTS
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=314252) where it was
considered to be not a bug.

Ah, I forgot to say: this is a Radeon Mobility 7500 card.
DRI works but has problems that may or may not be related to this bug: see bug
#56692

These problems seem also to affect Intel cards. Joel, are you also getting
"libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b"
when you run for instance glxgears?

Joel, I saw in your Xor.0.log that you are also getting this:
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25
...

Do you get reasonable 3D performance with your card? For example in
flightgear I get only about 4 frames per second. And I try to find out
if these warnings and the bad performance are related...
