The bug is actually in update-initramfs, not mkinitramfs. I verified the bug and removing the double-quotation marks around ${OPTS} does correct the problem. Re: [Bug 74768] Re: No hibernation or suspend in Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 1
Ah, I see. I will install and test. I am using Ubuntu (not Kubuntu). Note that in Edgy, the options are there (enabled), but do not work correctly (suspend never wakes, hibernate works correctly _unless_ you enable suspend when prompted by setting laptop-lid to suspend mode, then it stops working). When I saw them disabled, I assumed that this was an improvement (correctly identified that it doesn't work), not as being a feature of the liveCD. Is there a way of testing suspend even in a livecd situation (forcing it?) just to see if it can wake (whether or not it gets the CD working correctly again is another issue). On 12/7/06, Luka Renko <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Are you talking about Live CD? Suspend and hibernate are not supported > on when running running from CD. [Bug 74917] system monitor for network traffic shows constant traffic
Public bug reported: I have a system monitor applet in my upper panel, set to show network traffic. It shows constant traffic, in fact, the less traffic there is, the more it shows. I also have Network Monitor 2.12.0 as an applet, to monitor my wireless connection. If I open it it shows a 60 to 64 % signal, and no packets being tranferred, and yet the system monitor shows at least 60 to 70% traffic. When I open an application that accesses the internet or network, the system monitor shows a more normal amount of traffic, and when I close the app that accesses it jumps back up to the higher access level. I have Firestarter, and it shows no attempts to access or scan or hack my computer, so I know its not some covert access. Its not a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it. Alsp. when I tried to submit this report, I was told System Monitor 2.16.1 does not exist in Ubuntu. I guess I got an ubuntu that has packages included with the distro that are not part of anyone elses distro, cause it was installed by default. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- system monitor for network traffic shows constant traffic https://launchpad.net/bugs/74917 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 65662] Re: Not possible to mount USB stick after upgrading to kde-3.5.5
I'm sorry, I thought bug #72869 was a duplicate of this bug, and I didn't read that bug's whole description beforehand. In fact, there seem to be two different issues and bug #72869 is /not/ a duplicate of this bug! My problem is related to the very latest upgrade of hal, libhal-storage1 and libhal1 from 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.1 to 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.2, because a downgrade to the former version as described in #72869 solves the problem for me. [Bug 74911] dim_on_idle and related not honoured; screen still blanks
Public bug reported: With the screensaver disabled, Power Management Preferences set to Never, DPMS turned off in the bios and using gconf-editor to set ac_sleep_display to 0 and dim_on_idle to false, the screen still blanks after half an hour or so. This has occurred on every machine I've tried (various ibm and compaq models). The only way I've found to make a monitor actually stay on while in an x session is to do all the above, as well as add ' Option "DPMS" "Off" ' to my xorg.conf. This took several hours of trying one approach, waiting to see if the screen blanked after an hour, changing something else, etc... The bug here isn't that it's impossible to do, but rather that the gui (the preferences particularly) makes it look like I've set it correctly, when I simply haven't. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- dim_on_idle and related not honoured; screen still blanks https://launchpad.net/bugs/74911 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 65662] Re: Not possible to mount USB stick after upgrading to kde-3.5.5
Hi, I've applied this workaround (my /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf attached). What happens is this: I Plug in my USB-stick. I open Konqueror and go to the location: "media:/" Now, I click on the symbol of my USB-stick ("256MB removable drive"). Immediately, a popup-window opens and I still get the "unknown error". When I open a Konsole and type in: >>pmount-hal /dev/sda1<<, the USB-stick is successfully mounted under /dev/usbdisk (is this the expected behavior or should it be on another location?). Unmounting via right-click in Konqueror ("Safely remove") or >>pumount /dev/sda1<< works. When I enter into the Konsole: >>kio_media_mounthelper -m "media:/dev/sda1"<<, I get the same "An unknown error has occurred" as when klicking on the media symbol in Konqueror. Additionally, when I klick on "removable media" (Speichermedien) in KDEs control bar (Kontrolleiste), a Konqueror window opens with the location "/media" opened instead of "media:/", and as a result, there is no folder or icon to mount/unmount the USB-stick. [Bug 74699] Re: update-schemas: Error writing file "/var/lib/gconf/defaults/%gconf-tree.xml.new": File exists
Ok... the line that causes gconftool to bail out is a call to fputs on line 4030 of markup-tree.c (in the function write_local_schema_info). Here's the surrounding chunk of code: if (write_descs && local_schema->long_desc) { if (fprintf (f, "%s", whitespace2) < 0) goto out; s = g_markup_escape_text (local_schema->long_desc, -1); if (fputs (s, f) < 0) { g_free (s); goto out; } g_free (s); if (fputs ("\n", f) < 0) goto out; } What's happening is that local_schema->long_desc is an empty string, and fputs apparently returns EOF if you pass it an empty string. So now the question becomes what changed that caused this code to get run even if long_desc is an empty string? -- update-schemas: Error writing file "/var/lib/gconf/defaults/%gconf-tree.xml.new": File exists https://launchpad.net/bugs/74699 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 67680] Re: multiple cups-polld running simultaneously
After running with my patch for a while, I saw the same behavior - cupsd running at 100% CPU. In our environment, we're running only clients, so the inability to bind port 631 wasn't immediately a problem. So, it looks like my "quick fix" is a bust. My next thought is that this might actually be a CUPS problem. I looked through the source code a bit and in scheduler/dirsvc.c, the poller is spawned with: if (cupsdStartProcess(polld, argv, envp, -1, -1, statusfds[1], -1, 0, &(pollp->pid)) < 0) And the actual cupsdStartProcess function in scheduler/process.c takes these arguments: cupsdStartProcess( const char *command,/* I - Full path to command */ char *argv[], /* I - Command-line arguments */ char *envp[], /* I - Environment */ intinfd,/* I - Standard input file descriptor */ intoutfd, /* I - Standard output file descriptor */ interrfd, /* I - Standard error file descriptor */ intbackfd, /* I - Backchannel file descriptor */ introot,/* I - Run as root? */ int*pid)/* O - Process ID */ This would seem to indicate that the polld process shouldn't be spawned as root (argument 8 = 0 ), but it is. I'm not much of a C programmer, so I could be completely off-base here, but this seems to be at least close to the problem. I may post this to the CUPS list and see if anyone knows anything about it. -- multiple cups-polld running simultaneously https://launchpad.net/bugs/67680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 74896] Forced bind to 127.0.0.1 is "hardcoded' into /etc/default/snmpd instead of option in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: snmpd I have been struggling to get remote snmp reads from several of my machines. /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf was set up correctly. snmpwalk from localhost did work, a snmpwalk from a remote host however didn't work. After lots of debugging, trying etc. I found out that snmpd binds itself to 127.0.0.1 . Accorder to EVERY faq and manual that I read, the default behaviour of snmpd is to listen on every interface. However, specifying in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf to force the agent to listen on every socket doesn't work. It crashed the server. It appears that the 127.0.0.1 is "hardcoded" into /etc/default/snmpd. This script/settings file is used by the /etc/init.d/snmpd init script. The following line is responsible for the 127.0.0.1 bind. "SNMPDOPTS='-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p /var/run/snmpd.pid 127.0.0.1'" After removing the 127.0.0.1 I could finally query the remote machine. Dave Shield, one of the developers of net-snmp, confirmed that this way of starting snmpd indeed binds it to 127.0.0.1 He also confirmed that this is something that probably the Ubuntu Devs changed: "It's an defensible configuration, but it's not one that many distributions use. It's certainly not something that we ship ourselves. " If it is really necessary to restrict remote snmp acces, I strongly suggest to do this by changing the default configuration of snmpd in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf by adding: "agentaddress 127.0.0.1" This results in the same behaviour as adding the 127.0.0.1 to /etc/default/snmpd This way, users will see that the default option is to bind to 127.0.0.1 and can change this easily. It is very illogical and not user-friendly to expect the user to find out that there is a /etc/defaults/snmpd file that is causing the problem. Since this is a very easy and also elegant way to solve the problem, I really hope this change can be made. It would solve a lot of frustrations for people trying to get snmpd to work. Summary of proposed changes: => /etc/default/snmpd change "SNMPDOPTS='-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p /var/run/snmpd.pid 127.0.0.1'" to "SNMPDOPTS='-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p /var/run/snmpd.pid'" => /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf add "agentaddress 127.0.0.1" ** Affects: net-snmp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Forced bind to 127.0.0.1 is "hardcoded' into /etc/default/snmpd instead of option in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf https://launchpad.net/bugs/74896 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 74894] NNTP posting should be auto-detected.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution When a newsgroup folder is selected and the “New” toolbar button is pressed or Control+N is pressed to enter a new message composition window, it selects the correct identity, but does not have a Post-To header. Instead, to get the desired (expected) behavior, one must go to Message->Post New Message to Folder. This is terribly annoying when working with high-volume NNTP folders (such as an online classroom environment where new posts happen frequently). When an NNTP folder is selected, New Message should automatically “Post New Message to Folder” instead of making the user go out of the way to either select the “Post New Message to Folder” menu option (which I just found for the first time, myself), or manually adding a Post-To: header and filling it in after pressing Control+N for a new message composer window. ** Affects: evolution (upstream) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #383543 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383543 ** Also affects: evolution (upstream) via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383543 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- NNTP posting should be auto-detected. https://launchpad.net/bugs/74894 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 74895] Does not honor GNOME “Can change menu accelerators” setting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Please describe the problem: Evolution does not honor the “Can change menu accelerators” setting for GNOME applications. I happened upon a menu item that would be helpful to me in working around bug 383543 and enabled the menu accelerator function so that I could map a key combination to the “Post New Message to Folder” option, however, when I restarted Evolution to make the setting take effect, I found that it isn’t honored. Just to be sure I cover my basis, other GNOME programs *do* honor the setting, including the GNOME Help Browser, GAIM (which did not require restarting), Evince (which also did not require restarting) and others. Steps to reproduce: 1. Change the menu accelerators option in GNOME. a. Enable “Editable menu accelerators” in “Menu and Toolbar Preferences” OR: b. Enable “Can change menu accelerators” in “gTweakUI - Menus” 2. Try mapping any Evolution menu item to a new key by following the GNOME procedure: a. Hover over a menu option with the mouse (e.g., “Post New Message to Folder”) b. Press any key combination to attempt to make it work. No function key, C- key, M- key, or combination thereof works. 3. Restart Evolution 4. Retry step #2 (to no avail). Actual results: Nothing; menu mappings in Evolution appear to be static. Expected results: I expect Evolution to respect my GNOME settings and not have static accelerators mapped for the menu items; otherwise, the feature in GNOME itself is of relatively little use to me. Does this happen every time? Yes. ** Affects: evolution (upstream) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #383552 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383552 ** Also affects: evolution (upstream) via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383552 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- Does not honor GNOME “Can change menu accelerators” setting https://launchpad.net/bugs/74895 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73508] Re: Log windows does not show some logs
Sebastien, the problem is that Gaim 1.5.0 checks that the length of the date is exactly X (whatever X is, I don't remember). Gaim 2.0.0 names log files with a longer name. So, Gaim 1.5.0 can't read logs written by 2.0.0 without the change. The patch I attached before makes Gaim 1.5.0 forwards compatible. This is useful to users who share their home directory across versions of Gaim, or who have used Gaim 2.0.0 and then gone back to 1.5.0 for whatever reason. -- Log windows does not show some logs https://launchpad.net/bugs/73508 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 74893] "Highlight matching bracket" option doesn't highlight brackets with more than 2000 characters between them
Public bug reported: gedit fails to highlight matching brackets which have more than 2000 characters between them. If I have a long-ish block of code in which the opening and closing brackets are greater than 2000 characters apart, I'm unable to leave the input cursor sitting next to one and have the other be highlighted when I scroll to it. If they are less than 2000 characters apart, things work as expected. Steps to reproduce: 1) Open gedit 2) Enable the "highlight matching bracket" option in preferences 3) Insert a "{" on line 1 4) Insert 2000 characters of your choice, followed by a "}" 5) Leave the cursor next to one of the brackets and then scroll to the other bracket.
