[Bug 34237] Re: Powermac G5 plays audio from internal speaker when speakers are connected

2006-12-08 Thread Jeff Bailey
As with the previous poster, the sound is currently coming out both the
internal speaker and the external one, with the external one being much
quieter.

In the Gnome Volume Control, I can disable "Speakers" and then it no
longer comes out the internal speakers. If I turn on "Line-Out", then
the sound to the external speakers gets *much* louder and seems to be
more like the volume I'd expect.

[Bug 75074] eject cd doesn't work and "just should"

2006-12-08 Thread josh
Public bug reported:

When I press the button on my CD/DVD drive the CD doesn't eject. This
is a bug. I don't care if it's mounted. I don't care if it's use.
When I press that button, it should come out. I understand that
forcefully unmounting a file system is in general a bad idea. Data can
be corrupted, be lost or disappear into thin air -- but not on a read-
only mount of a read only CD.

I shouldn't have to hold down the button. I shouldn't have to reboot my
computer. Xine shouldn't lock up because I wanted my disc and neither
should mplayer. They should exit gracefully and my disc should come out
so that I can throw it on my desk full of other randon crap.

I shouldn't have to fight my CD-drive.

If I put in a scratched or otherwise damaged disc (unbeknownst to me)
there should be some timeout period where it gives up and stops trying
to mount it -- this makes things hang. It's annoying.

Give me back my disc.

Please, thanx :-)

[Bug 75073] missing conflicts or replaces: lines in splt out packages

2006-12-08 Thread Robert Collins
Public bug reported:

The split out packages:
adept-batch
adept-installer
adept-notifier
adept-updater

Contain files present in adept-2.0, but neither declare a conflict with
adept << 2.1 nor declare that they replace adept.

This makes the job of dist-upgrade crossing from 2.0 to 2.1 harder and
prone to breakage - even if it happens to work sometimes, its able to
break if for some reason adept-batch (say) is unpacked before adept-2.1

This should be easy to correct.

2006-12-08 Thread DarkMageZ
After a very long conversation with the core developer of xchat (zed).
I've gone along and hopefully fixed this up. Known regressions consist
of loss of being able to use links from within firefox to open up irc
channels and servers.

Testing packages:

http://mirror.randumb.org/darkmagez/ubu/xchat_2.6.6-0ubuntu4~dmzfix4ubuntu_i386.deb

if you don't know how to install these, then you shouldn't be testing
them.

[Bug 73586] Re: nautilus fails in sudo mode

2006-12-08 Thread Martin G Miller
I just tried for several minutes to reproduce the problem in debug mode
and could not. I navigated throughout my file system to areas owned by
both user and root. I copied and pasted files owned by root to my user
desktop and did not experience any unusual behavior. When I first
reported this bug, I could reproduce it within seconds. I did install
more than 30 updates in the last 2 days. Perhaps something in them has
fixed this problem?

corresponded with the author of the screensaver a year or so ago, but i no
longer have his email. maybe he could port the screensaver into gnome?

i agree it's one of the more useful screensavers out there. it's nice to
look at all your pictures in a subdirectory, but the random generator
doesn't do a v. good job of randomizing. and the clock is visible on the
screen from quite a distance.

[Bug 75080] nfs server documentation needs addition

2006-12-08 Thread Trey Ethridge
Public bug reported:

The latest Ubuntu server documentation located at http://help.ubuntu.com
needs an addition. The nfs client instructions don't mention the need
for the portmap package to be installed on the client.

While the current documentation works on a clean install of Ubuntu 6.10,
the mount command can take 3 to 5 minutes before the mount completes.

It is my understanding that NFS uses RPC rather frequently, and the
fallback alternatives take a long time to negotiate when portmap isn't
installed. It took me weeks of searching for the causes of slow NFS
share mounting before I discovered this issue.

I think a comment should be added that mentions that installing the
portmap package on the NFS client machine will help shorten the time it
takes to mount a NFS share.

[Bug 31830] Re: Incorrect screen resolution in Dapper LiveCD

2006-12-08 Thread didier
> Maybe Feisty will Squash this bug once and for all.
Maybe :)

In my understanding (for when dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" works later)
the bug is in casper.

casper-bottom/20xconfig calls dpkg-reconfigure in a chroot but it only
mounts /proc and /sys.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg can call ddcprobe which needs a working
/dev/fb0...

adding:
mount -n -o bind /dev /root/dev
works for me.

[Bug 75084] wbsd.ko hangs amd64 kernel due to wrong DMA memory allocation

2006-12-08 Thread hm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

system: Turion 64 MT-40
OS: Ubuntu 6.10 server x86_64
kernel: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic_2.6.17-10.33_amd64.deb

wbsd SD-card reader driver (CONFIG_MMC_WBSD) has some severe problems
with DMA memory allocation on amd64 platform. It causes kernel (linux-
image-2.6.17-10-generic_2.6.17-10.33_amd64.deb) to oops and in many
cases hangs the machine. This is due to the fact that the original
author wrote the driver for ia32 and still didn't port it to amd64. Here
is the link http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/9/25/95 where he aknowledges it.
Also, see a relevant part of my dmesg in the attachment.

While it is desirable that the default kernel includes as many hardware
drivers as possible, it is also important that the default kernel boots
at all on any machine ;).

The solution is: exclude wbsd.ko (CONFIG_MMC_WBSD) from any linux-
image*_amd64 kernel.

FWIW, I initially reported this problem -- software claiming to use
/bin/sh actually expecting bash -- to debian in 1997
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/1997/04/msg00570.html). I was
blown off and told that /bin/sh would always be /bin/bash and that
people could and should just assume that /bin/sh was not merely a POSIX
sh but provided all the extra bashisms.

[Bug 75085] choosing an option from the Places menu spawns x instances of Nautilus

2006-12-08 Thread Ashley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Since upgrading to Edgy, both my PCs have experienced this problem. My
two systems appear to be the only two affected, and I have no idea how
to reproduce this on other systems.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a location on the places menu.

What should happen:
The selected location should appear in a Nautilus browser.

What happens:
Sometimes the selected location will appear in the Nautilus browser.
Occasionally the system will hang as if the location can't be found. Five to
ten seconds later, a variable number (usually five to ten) of nautilus browsers
will start across the desktop.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

What's the exact text of the error you get, and how do you trigger it?

[Bug 75085] Re: choosing an option from the Places menu spawns x instances of Nautilus

2006-12-08 Thread Ashley
Additional comments: Upon first clicking the menu item, the Ubuntu
"thinking" cursor appears, then disappears. The windows appear shortly
after that.

Image included to demonstrate. I'm not sure how helpful that'll be.
