[Bug 80771] [German] Error-message: "Kann ni cht hinzufügen" when connecting to ICQ

2007-01-20 Thread Coldblooded
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

Distri: Ubuntu Feisty
Gaim Version: 1:2.0.0+beta6-0ubuntu2
Language: German

Since the last upgrade gaim is popping up an error message everytime I
connect to my ICQ account:

> Kann nicht hinzufügen:
>
> Konnte den Buddy 1 aus unbekannten Gründen nicht
> hinzufügen. Der häufigste Grund dafür ist, daß sie die
> maximale Zahl erlaubter Buddy in ihrer Buddy-Liste
> überschritten haben.

No previous version had this problem, neither with feisty nor edgy.

[Bug 80770] gajim reconnects when wifi returns even it it wasn't connected before

2007-01-20 Thread Eli Criffield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gajim

If you have gajim running but not connected and loose your wifi connection or
"sleep" your laptop when wifi connectivity returns gajim connects.

And it gives an error "OpenPGP passphrase was not given You will be
connected to server without OpenPGP", even though i have it save my
OpenPGP password.

This is with gajim-0.11-0ubuntu1

This doesn't happen with the current SVN (7864) of gajim.

[Bug 80733] Re: After search string changed apps list is not sorted

2007-01-20 Thread arty
Yes, I think that once chosen sort order shouldn't be changed at all.
If user prefers installing popular applications, he'd be happy to select
descending popularity sorting once and always see popular apps in first
lines. Keeping state is just organic.

Speaking about example: I usually do not type complete search term. As
I'm ordinarily lazy user, I start with few letters in hope that they
will bring me to my goal. If there're too many results, I narrow search
by typing another few letters. The whole pattern of usage is like in
Google Suggest (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en). So when
I'm searching for mplayer, I'll start with just 'mpl', then continue to
'mplay' and stop here, because mplayer is on second line of results.

[Bug 80769] No progress indicator on long file operations

2007-01-20 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar

In Xubuntu (Herd 2), there is no idication of long file operaton
progress (copying, archive extraction, etc.) This is a usability
problem especially on slower systems. The user may be tempted to
initiate a duplicate operation because there is no obvious sign of
progress, leading to a potential resource overload. I can't recall if
this existed in previous versions of Xubuntu since I use KDE/Gnome on my
systems and only use XFCE on older systems for some of my customers.

[Bug 80767] epiphany (and firefox) crashes on a web page since last update

2007-01-20 Thread Buttay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox/epiphany in dapper

Description of the crash:
This crash occurs on some page with stored password (usually the second
login page of my bank). I don't use any external system to store
password, they are stored within epiphany (or firefox) as far as I know.
This doesn't occurs on most pages with password stored though (e.g I
have a profile on wikipedia, and when I go to the login page, everything
goes fine)

Please note that the crash doesn't occur during the rendering of the
page, but at the end, when epiphany fills the field it already knows
with the password. Also, note that this doesn't occur if I go to the
page with a new profile (i.e where no password have been stored

Steps to reproduce the crash:
1. login to barclays.co.ulk/online (unfortunately, the crash occurs on
the second login page, so you have to be a customer to access it.)
2. That's it! as soon as the entire page has been downloaded, epiphany
(and firefox) crashes

How often does this happen?
Since last update of epiphany, as far as I know

[Bug 67999] Re: update-manager in dapper needs to depend on python-vte (was: "can't find DistUpgradeViewGtk" when upgrading dapper->edgy)

2007-01-20 Thread Velanzia
When I tried to upgrade to Edgy, faced with the same problem. Then I
installed 'python vte' using 'Synaptic' - took only 1.5 hours, now I
have Edgy on my machine!

But I beleve, if update process is dependent on 'python vte' it should
look for it, rather than throwing an error.

Note: I installed Breezy, then upgraded to Dapper and from there I
upgraded to Edgy.

[Bug 80753] Re: Synaptic doesn't assume root-priviledges when needed

2007-01-20 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Actually gnome-app-install is quite dump :) Since it cannot install
packages itself it calls synaptic with root privileges to do the job.

ASAIK it is not allowed to raise your privilges in UNIX world. So far we
would have to call another process to do the install part - like gnome-
app-install.

There is the plan to use a socket for the dist-upgrade tool. D-Bus
doesn't seem to be able to handle file descriptors.

Currently we use gksu synaptic in the menu entry.

Cheers,

Sebastian

The version you get in Openwengo site is really good for daily use. I
recommend it as workaround, since i use it myself on Edgy.

Any version compiled by anyone is not going to be "that good'. Openwengo

[Bug 80766] j2se1.4-amd64 jre crashes when running azureus 2.5.0.2

cause. A second later, my system reports that java has crashed. I've
been unable to reliably reproduce the crash yet, but I'm working on it.

[Bug 72613] Re: crash gxine

2007-01-20 Thread Darren Salt
Same crash? Really? Then why isn't the backtrace in your crash dump file [1]
pointing at
xine_get_next_audio_frame() in /usr/lib/libxine.so.1?

What would be a lot more useful is (a) a separate bug report for what
looks suspiciously like a separate issue, (b) knowing what you were
doing with gxine at the time and (c)
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

[1] Bloated, insufficiently-annotated, lacking full debug info, would
ideally be processed after upload to provide this info *without* the
core dump... yes, I agree, /var/crash/_usr_bin_gxine.1000 is a problem

[Bug 80765] 6.10 Installer refuses due to xfs

2007-01-20 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

I have tried installing Xubuntu and Ubuntu (both @ 6.10).

/boot of either ext2 or ext3
All others xfs, but swap of course

It will not continue installing, grumbling that root can not be xfs...
but that is exactly why I made /boot ext3!

With the Xubuntu installer: Thinking it might be ext2 related, I wipe
the disk and repartitioned with ext3 as /boot. xfs still is on the /boot
partition, but now ext3 is on the / partition! ;-)

With the Ubuntu installer, I was trying to install over Ubuntu 5.10, so
I had all partitions in place - just matched up the previous mount
points. /boot was ext3 in my Ubuntu 5.10 install, so I as well left that
as-was. Also refused to install.

All was well with Ubuntu 5.10 - but that was a text mode installer, so
probably getting bit by a new bug in the GUI installer.

[Bug 80763] Feisty Herd 2 LiveCD crashes with 3dfx video card

2007-01-20 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-tdfx

LiveCD install generally unstable. Desktop crashes randomly and drops
back to gdm which tries to start again after 30s. The Xorg.log shows
tdfx 1.2.1 is being used so it's probably another Bug #68291
manifestation. No errors are listed in gdm log but syslog shows:

gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

Switching to vesa in xorg.conf eliminates problem. Not a very user-

[Bug 80764] can't return to normal window manager

2007-01-20 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Strange problem with compiz (I think), I don't know how to diagnose it
further without help.

I tried the "desktop effects" applet in the control center (I test
regularly to see if it works correctly; it never did...) and activated
the effects. compiz replaced the window manager, but it wasn't working
(no window decorations visible, I couldn't raise windows from the task-
bar, but the application panel worked and I could start a new terminal.

(gnome-window-decorations was among the running processes, not sure if
that was supposed to happen. compiz.real was there too.)

The bug is that I couldn't disable compiz. The button on the "desktop
effects" applet did something, not sure what (the desktop was redrawn),
but the window decorations didn't appear.

I tried killing compiz.real in the console, but it got restarted (which
I guess was normal). I also tried "metacity --replace", but that didn't
work either. The compiz.real process was still running. (I didn't think
to check if it's pid changed, sorry.)

I was only able to fix it with "killall -9 compiz.real && metacity
--replace".

Please ask if you need more info.

(Since we're here, allow me a little off-topic rant: how come, even
though intel is the only graphics hardware developer that assists open-
source with writing drivers, intel graphics boards don't have good-
enough drivers to run a compositing manager correctly?!)

[Bug 80758] video thumbnails no longer work

2007-01-20 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I used to have thumbnails for (most) video files shown in nautilus. A
while ago it stopped generating new thumbnails. (Video files that
already have thumbnails calculated still have their thumbnails shown
correctly.) When I look at a new video file, the "computing preview"
icon is shown for a while, then the normal video icon (just a roll of
film on my theme) is shown.

I couldn't figure out what's wrong -- I assume the thumbnailer crashes,
but I have no idea where to look for errors. I don't even know exactly
what package generates the thumbnails and how. Are there several
options? (As in, does it always use totem, or can I tell it to use
mplayer or vlc to generate the thumbnails?)

I can look for more info if someone directs me.

(A few other issues, perhaps someone can help me: how do I get nautilus
to rebuild the thumbnail for a file, other than deleting all thumbnails?
And how do I get it to build higher-resolution thumbnails?)

[Bug 64666] Re: [Edgy] 5 white blinking stripes when booting on i810 laptop

2007-01-20 Thread TJ
I found comments in a Linux Kernel mailing list message talking about
changing the way the framebuffer code initialises.

http://lkml.org/lkml/2004/9/3/429

This led me to examine the source for 2.6.17-10 to see if I could see
anything that would explain the behaviour.

In drivers/video/i810/i810_main.c the call to fb_get_options() (in
drivers/video/fbmem.c) only occurs if the driver is statically linked
into the kernel, not if its a module:

#ifndef MODULE
static int __devinit i810fb_init(void)
{
char *option = NULL;

if (fb_get_options("i810fb", &option))
return -ENODEV;
i810fb_setup(option);

return pci_register_driver(&i810fb_driver);
}
#endif

This means that the function that is responsible for reading the boot-
time parameters, i810fb_setup(), isn't available at boot-time.

This would seem to explain why the boot-time options aren't having any
effect.

It appears that i810fb has to be built into the kernel to be used in
conjunction with usplash?

Can someone with knowledge confirm this is the explanation?

[Bug 80757] missing dependency on nfs-common

2007-01-20 Thread JetPac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs

I have installed autofs:
apt-get install autofs

Then I have enabled auto.net in /etc/auto.master, restarted autofs and
it did not work - I was only able to cd /net.

After a short while of debugging I have found that there is neither
showmount nor kshowmount present on the system.

When I have manually added nfs-common and restarted autofs, everything
works as expected.

Cheers,

[Bug 80755] extracting doesn't work right

2007-01-20 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

I'm not sure what's wrong, this may be an issue with the file selector,
but extracting files with file-roller is a pain.

For example, I open an archive with just one file, click on "extract",
and I get presented with a location selector; it's pointed by default on
my desktop. If I now click OK (because I want to put the file on the
desktop), it doesn't work. If I select another directory, then it works
for that directory.

But moving back to the desktop makes it not work again. I have to select
a different partition first, then go back to the desktop to make it
work. This is very annoying.

Also, drag and drop doesn't work at all right now. I used to have issues
before (I had to drag the file without releasing until the progress bar
for the extraction was done), but this seems different.

[Bug 80756] org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks

2007-01-20 Thread Jon Anderson

[Bug 80256] Re: Synaptic package manager hard to find in Feisty gnome-control-center

2007-01-20 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Sebastian, I was just going to enter a long ranty bug report (as in
usability issue) about the control-center, and while I was going to be
nice about it I think it would just get closed right away.

However I do like Ubuntu enough that I wouldn't really like to drop it.
I don't like mailing lists for things where I just want to follow an
issue, but I may try for this one. What do you think is a proper place
to talk about it?

It's not this issue in particular that's my problem; I've made myself a
menu entry already. It's a bit more general, and it's going to be
annoying to the developers no matter how nice I'll be about it...

[Bug 80753] Synaptic doesn't assume root-priviledges when needed

2007-01-20 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

When started without super-user privileges Synaptic goes into some kind
of "read-only" mode instead of asking for the privileges when clicking
on "apply".

It does show an info window at startup describing the situation, which I
guess is OK (and makes this more of an enhancement request rather than a
bug), but it's very easy to click-through it and forget. The "Apply"
button is afterwards disabled, and the reason is easy to forget by this
time.

This can be worked-around by using "gksu synaptic" as a menu-entry, but
that's wrong from a security perspective (and annoying), as the
superuser privileges are only required for applying the changes. (For
instance, I may start synaptic just to check if I have something
installed or if there are any updates available.) Asking for passwords
before it being necessary -- and even before knowing if it's necessary
-- is very bad security practice, because frequency trains people to
enter their password without thinking.

The package manager that's started by the Add/Remove... standard menu
entry is smart enough to do that, but unfortunately it's not a full
replacement for Synaptic (I don't know why, but not all packages are
available for selection using it).

This doesn't follow.

Kexi requires the PostgreSQL development files at build time.
Packages in main cannot "Build-Depend" on packages in universe.
Therefore, Kexi is built without PostgreSQL support in Ubuntu.

Later versions of Kexi replace the kexi-postgresql-driver package, because
that package is no longer useful with current versions of Kexi, and
the "Replaces:" field should indicate to your package manager that it can be
removed.

[Bug 64000] Re: Amarok- Annoying habit of skipping through songlist rapidly

2007-01-20 Thread Andrew Ash
I think you would have a better chance of getting this fixed if you
submitted a bug to bugs.kde.org

If you do, please give us a link back to it so we can track it here.
Thanks
