[Bug 80733] Re: After search string changed apps list is not sorted
Yes, I think that once chosen sort order shouldn't be changed at all. If user prefers installing popular applications, he'd be happy to select descending popularity sorting once and always see popular apps in first lines. Keeping state is just organic. Speaking about example: I usually do not type complete search term. As I'm ordinarily lazy user, I start with few letters in hope that they will bring me to my goal. If there're too many results, I narrow search by typing another few letters. The whole pattern of usage is like in Google Suggest (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en). So when I'm searching for mplayer, I'll start with just 'mpl', then continue to 'mplay' and stop here, because mplayer is on second line of results. -- After search string changed apps list is not sorted https://launchpad.net/bugs/80733 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 80769] No progress indicator on long file operations
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunar In Xubuntu (Herd 2), there is no idication of long file operaton progress (copying, archive extraction, etc.) This is a usability problem especially on slower systems. The user may be tempted to initiate a duplicate operation because there is no obvious sign of progress, leading to a potential resource overload. [Bug 80753] Re: Synaptic doesn't assume root-priviledges when needed
Actually gnome-app-install is quite dump :) Since it cannot install packages itself it calls synaptic with root privileges to do the job. ASAIK it is not allowed to raise your privilges in UNIX world. So far we would have to call another process to do the install part - like gnome- app-install. There is the plan to use a socket for the dist-upgrade tool. D-Bus doesn't seem to be able to handle file descriptors. Currently we use gksu synaptic in the menu entry. [Bug 80764] can't return to normal window manager
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz Strange problem with compiz (I think), I don't know how to diagnose it further without help. I tried the "desktop effects" applet in the control center (I test regularly to see if it works correctly; it never did...) and activated the effects. compiz replaced the window manager, but it wasn't working (no window decorations visible, I couldn't raise windows from the task- bar, but the application panel worked and I could start a new terminal. (gnome-window-decorations was among the running processes, not sure if that was supposed to happen. compiz.real was there too.) The bug is that I couldn't disable compiz. The button on the "desktop effects" applet did something, not sure what (the desktop was redrawn), but the window decorations didn't appear. I tried killing compiz.real in the console, but it got restarted (which I guess was normal). I also tried "metacity --replace", but that didn't work either. The compiz.real process was still running. (I didn't think to check if it's pid changed, sorry.) I was only able to fix it with "killall -9 compiz.real && metacity --replace". Please ask if you need more info. Are there several options? (As in, does it always use totem, or can I tell it to use mplayer or vlc to generate the thumbnails?) I can look for more info if someone directs me. [Bug 64666] Re: [Edgy] 5 white blinking stripes when booting on i810 laptop
I found comments in a Linux Kernel mailing list message talking about changing the way the framebuffer code initialises. http://lkml.org/lkml/2004/9/3/429 This led me to examine the source for 2.6.17-10 to see if I could see anything that would explain the behaviour. In drivers/video/i810/i810_main.c the call to fb_get_options() (in drivers/video/fbmem.c) only occurs if the driver is statically linked into the kernel, not if its a module: #ifndef MODULE static int __devinit i810fb_init(void) { char *option = NULL; if (fb_get_options("i810fb", &option)) return -ENODEV; i810fb_setup(option); return pci_register_driver(&i810fb_driver); } #endif This means that the function that is responsible for reading the boot- time parameters, i810fb_setup(), isn't available at boot-time. This would seem to explain why the boot-time options aren't having any effect. It appears that i810fb has to be built into the kernel to be used in conjunction with usplash? Can someone with knowledge confirm this is the explanation? -- [Edgy] 5 white blinking stripes when booting on i810 laptop https://launchpad.net/bugs/64666 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If I now click OK (because I want to put the file on the desktop), it doesn't work. If I select another directory, then it works for that directory. [Bug 80256] Re: Synaptic package manager hard to find in Feisty gnome-control-center
Sebastian, I was just going to enter a long ranty bug report (as in usability issue) about the control-center, and while I was going to be nice about it I think it would just get closed right away. However I do like Ubuntu enough that I wouldn't really like to drop it. I don't like mailing lists for things where I just want to follow an issue, but I may try for this one. What do you think is a proper place to talk about it? It's not this issue in particular that's my problem; I've made myself a menu entry already. It's a bit more general, and it's going to be annoying to the developers no matter how nice I'll be about it... -- Synaptic package manager hard to find in Feisty gnome-control-center https://launchpad.net/bugs/80256 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I ended up changing my hardrive as I was seeing some IO error in the log and the drive was starting to make some weird noise. So I suspect the Drive was dying. [Bug 80753] Synaptic doesn't assume root-priviledges when needed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synaptic When started without super-user privileges Synaptic goes into some kind of "read-only" mode instead of asking for the privileges when clicking on "apply". It does show an info window at startup describing the situation, which I guess is OK (and makes this more of an enhancement request rather than a bug), but it's very easy to click-through it and forget. The "Apply" button is afterwards disabled, and the reason is easy to forget by this time. This can be worked-around by using "gksu synaptic" as a menu-entry, but that's wrong from a security perspective (and annoying), as the superuser privileges are only required for applying the changes. (For instance, I may start synaptic just to check if I have something installed or if there are any updates available.) Asking for passwords before it being necessary -- and even before knowing if it's necessary -- is very bad security practice, because frequency trains people to enter their password without thinking. The package manager that's started by the Add/Remove... standard menu entry is smart enough to do that, but unfortunately it's not a full replacement for Synaptic (I don't know why, but not all packages are available for selection using it). ** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Synaptic doesn't assume root-priviledges when needed https://launchpad.net/bugs/80753 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This doesn't follow. Kexi requires the PostgreSQL development files at build time. Packages in main cannot "Build-Depend" on packages in universe. Therefore, Kexi is built without PostgreSQL support in Ubuntu. Later versions of Kexi replace the kexi-postgresql-driver package, because that package is no longer useful with current versions of Kexi, and the "Replaces:" field should indicate to your package manager that it can be removed. -- Kexi cannot access PostgreSQL databases anymore https://launchpad.net/bugs/61850 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
