[Bug 82903] 20xorg-common_process-args doesn't work with zsh

2007-02-02 Thread Felix Eckhofer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xinit

In line 36 /etc/X11/Xsession.d/20xorg-common_process-args calls which. This
will fail for some reason if zsh is used and $1 contains an absolute path:
 STARTUP_FULL_PATH=$(which $1 || true)
Simply changing it to
 STARTUP_FULL_PATH=$(/usr/bin/which $1 || true)
so that no builtin is called made it possible to login with zsh as login shell
(after applying the workaround for
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=368818).

[Bug 81700] Re: Only allow a smaller selection of users to perform privileged shutdown/suspend/hibernate

2007-02-02 Thread Paul Sladen
KM: the following are kludgey, disgusting quick workarounds; I wouldn't
deploy this on more than one machine:

  $ sudo mv /sbin/shutdown /sbin/real-shutdown

a better way to do that is probably using 'dpkg-divert' somehow. You
could also remove the execute permissions:

  $ sudo chmod a-x /sbin/shutdown

The 'ctrl-alt-del' command combination can be dealt with by editing:

  /etc/inittab

and commenting out:

  ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t1 -a -r now

[Bug 82906] Trashbin stays full

2007-02-02 Thread Andre Kaldenhoven
Public bug reported:

Hello,

since about 2 weeks I have a minor problem with Ubuntu Edgy Eft with
Gnome:

The trashbin icon on the panel always shows a full trashbin. If I mouse
over the icon it says 2 items in Trash but when I open the trashbin it
seems to be empty. Even if I switch show hidden files on or by ls
-la I do not find anything in the trashbin. Deleting the whole trashbin
by rm -rf /home/andre/.Trash deletes the trashbin but the icon stays
the same. The only way to see an empty trash on the panel is by removing
the trashbin from the panel and putting it back afterwards. Then the
trashbin is empty until it is used again. Sometimes it works 1 or 2
times but after that the trashbin stays full on emptying it.

bloody hurry caused a bad comment above. My G-C-C *does* have the fix in

So 398631 has not actually fixed the issue (since err is NULL, which
would signal no error, but the GConfEntry returned by the call is still
NULL).

So the real fix would be in gconf_client_get_entry, I guess.

 different.

A crash dump is a file that has useful information about the crash and
the OS environment. So usually when a Ubuntu program crashes then a tool
called apport intercepts the crash and instructs the user on how to
proceed to report the crash (that was the window you saw when firefox
crashed). Usually when a crash dump file is generated it's saved at
the /var/crash/ directory so apport asks you if you want to attach that
file to your crash report. The file you have to attach
is /var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash.

[Bug 42504] Bug confirmation

2007-02-02 Thread Andreas Modinos
I can confirm this bug on HP/Compaq nx6125 running Dapper with latest
patches.

This laptop has a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g]
wireless adapter that has been configured with ndiswrapper.

Whenever my wife and I are visiting our inlaws who have an unprotected
WLAN in their house the laptop will refuse to connect to the internet.
The wireless indicator is on suggesting that the connection has been
achieved, but the network-manager icon on the upper right corner of the
screen says no connection has been established. Also the WLAN does not
show up on the network-manager menu. Connection can be achieved when the
following commands are given:

sudo ifconfig eth1 up
sudo dhclient eth1

After this the connection works, although network-manager still doesn't
seem to be aware of it (the WLAN is still not in the menu, and the state
is disconnected).

The system is running Dapper with the latest patches applied today. At
home the system connects perfectly well. We are using a WEP protection
there.

This has happened before, but I usually say do not send report. I
figured I did something wrong. It does not happen all the time. It
usually works. Next time I will pay more attention.

I am new to Ubuntu. I just started using it mid-January, 2007 when my
nephew installed it to replace Windows98 (which had stopped working
properly) on my Compaq Presario. He thought I should use my brain and
try something new.

Thanks for any help.

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink

2007-02-02 Thread dmchugh
Gah!

Trying to fix the world or are we trying to get a copy of Unix running?
Well I know a few good hackers and the answer is trying to fix the world
damned the rest they will be better for it. Sounds like Unix to me! Ha!

Having said that can we just put the world off for a bit I'm trying to
get my own little corner in order at the moment and dont quite have the
time to fix the world quite yet.. Perhaps if you fire a flare over the
portside and say that Ubuntu is switching to dash before you do. I
remember when the virus would not actually do anything to you it just
told you, bah yer broken. Companies don't understand the save the world
concept they do however understand the need fer speed n the need for
stability alla Unix. But as long as we are changing the world Unix is
going to be sitting on the back shelf teaching script kiddies the way!
At least give the script kiddie the right to know that he is being
messed up ahead of time, after all he is trying to find out what the
real world is, hes trying unix isnt he?

[Bug 82748] Re: [apport] gnome-volume-manager crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-02-02 Thread rik
Thanks for the reply. I`m using the default Ubuntu (Feisty) ATI driver
(card is a Radeon X600, Acer TravelMate 4100 laptop). The problem was
occurring in bog-standard GNOME after start up.

Interestingly, since applying a bunch of patches last night and a cold
start today (I keep up to date with Feisty updates, knowing it is a
development build), instead of the immediate crashes, the GNOME splash
now lists loading the panel 7 or 8 times on login, but does not crash;
I just receive I`ve detected a panel already running. I guess it`s
possible the issue is being addressed by some other code changes. Will
keep an eye on things as I`ve had the crashing panel issue since Edgy`s
release.

[Bug 78905] Re: duplicate icq/aim buddies

2007-02-02 Thread BHowell
There's one copy of the buddy for each account. I never added them to
the other accounts.

I was running both accounts because, while the namespace is unified
under oscar, there is no way (that I know of) to merge two logins into
one.

If one of my friends only has my ICQ login, they won't see me logging
into my AIM account unless they add that user to their buddy list.

I have feisty installed on another partition. Let me see if I can
reproduce this. Is there some kind of debug switch that I should turn
on?

[Bug 39653] Re: Resize dirty NTFS silently fails

2007-02-02 Thread Colin Watson
As indicated in the other bugs, they aren't duplicates because they're
in different partitioner implementations.

In any case, this was recently fixed in Debian, and I've pulled in the
fix:

partman-partitioning (45ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low

  * Resynchronise with Debian. Remaining changes:
- Offer resize option for HFS, HFS+, and HFSX.
- Make sure to wipe disk label on Sun disks before creating a new one.
  * Backing up from the new partition size question when resizing a
partition now goes back to the menu of options for that partition, not
to the partition tree.

[Bug 79626] Re: realtek gigabit ethernet not recognised on feisty

2007-02-02 Thread Secret
Ok I typed in lspci -vvn, lsmod, and dmesg, and there is a lot of
output, so I decided to put all the content in a text file. As I'm not
that technical I really don't know what i'm talking about, so maybe I
have put too much output in it (it's 18 pages long), but I really didn't
know if I could skip some pieces.

I think it's valuable to state that the eth0 port is recognized in Edgy
but not in Feisty, all these commands are typed into a working Edgy
terminal, as I formatted my Feisty partitions.

How can I check whether the r1000 module is loaded? As I already said,
I'm not that technical, but if I can help, I'm glad to do so.

[Bug 82919] KVpnc has no Help file

2007-02-02 Thread lefty.crupps
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvpnc

Trying to open the Help in KVpnc does nothing. It would be great to
have a good manual, especially with the not-too-clear fields that are
required just to connect to a Windows machine. I don't know what should
be done!

When I press either [F1] or when I try to open the Help file via the
Help menu, the icon bounces but nothing ever opens.

There should be a help file which opens and tells you what the various
fields are, with a description of what they do and why.

This seems rather self explanatory but Malone demands more info before I
can report this bug. I don't know what more to say to fill space and

[Bug 56090] Re: Regression: Webcams using pwc driver produce all-grey images

2007-02-02 Thread Simon Chemouil
Luis F. López M. wrote on 02.02.2007 19:50:
Any chances to get the Feisty's driver backported to Edgy?

Also, It looks like there's a pwc-source package available for Edgy (to
 be used with module-assistant):

 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pwc/10.0.12-rc1-1

Could this be the way to solve the issue: Installing pwc-source package
and then running m-a a-i pwc?

I haven't had a change to test it. Can someone please verify if this
 approach works?

Thanks for the clue, it works here (had no time previously to fix the
problem, even if there are other ways,
e.g:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=282748)

Anyway I'm/was not familiar with module-assistant (it wasn't even
installed on my system before), but it did the job properly, save that
it put the built module in /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/updates/. I just
had to copy the newly created file ``pwc.ko'' to its proper place
(/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/kernel/drivers/media/video/pwc).

Still, it'd be good for other users if the proper module was backported
into edgy.

Here are the steps if someone wants to try it out:

-- BEGIN --
apt-get install module-assistant
m-a prepare
m-a a-i pwc
cp /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/updates/pwc.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/kernel/drivers/media/video/pwc
rmmod pwc
modprobe pwc
-- END --

(You may need build-essentials and stuff).

Have fun,

Luckily I've already got the latest version of gdb installed, would I be

[Bug 82922] Re: default quality for ogg profile too low

2007-02-02 Thread enyc
Please be aware that the gstreomer profile setting here is a factor of
10 less than the values you would enter to oggenc (e.g. -q 5 on oggenc
is the same thing as 0.5 on the gstreamer pipeline).

Note that quality 5 (0.5 in gstreamer pipeline) is often considered the point
at which vorbis becomes transparent to CD audio...
In same cases quality 6 is useful (0.6 in gstreamer pipeline) turns off lossy
stereo coupling...

In my opinion the 0.5 is more than adequate for most people's
purposes... but thats' only my opinion ;-).

Feisty has the same pptp version as edgy. If it's not compatible with
network-manager 0.6.4, does that explain the segfaults?

I tried compiling the 0.6.4-tagged branch from SVN, but I get a linker
error: relocation R-X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' ... recompile
with -fPIC. Passing --with-pic to ./configure doesn't help. So I'm

[Bug 82925] AutoRepeat doesn't work on Thinkpad Back/Forward keys.

2007-02-02 Thread Octavio Alvarez
Public bug reported:

Version: Ubuntu Edgy, completely updated.
Computer: IBM Thinkpad T42.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a terminal.
2. Issue xset r off
3. Start xev.
4. Hold down the Back key. It happens also with the Forward key.

Expected result:
You should get one KeyPress event on press and one KeyRelease event on release.

Actual result:
You get a series of KeyPress/KeyRelease events on hold.

Other, maybe related info:
When xset r on, holding down other keys throw this:
 1. KeyPress.
 2. The typematic delay.
 3. Series of KeyRelease+KeyPress.
 4. Finally a KeyRelease.

However, holding down the Back or Forward keys, xev throws this:
 1. KeyPress+KeyRelease.
 2. The typematic delay
 3. Series of KeyPress+KeyRelease, until released.

Other linux distributions don't show this wrong behavior.

[Bug 82622] Re: Firefox crashed while browsing google

2007-02-02 Thread martin
Isn't that in the crash-log? ;)

I'm not sure which packages were active at that time. I think the
web-development toolbar wasn't active at that moment, because of the upgrade of
Firefox it disappeared.
The others, according to the add-ons page:
- Aptana Debugger service 0.2.7.13370 (not used it)
- DOM inspector
- Firebug (unknown version, updated it afterwards, I guess)
- Flashblock 1.5.2
- Master Password Timeout 0.2.5
- Session Manager 0.5.3.1
- Tab Mix Plus 0.3.5.2
- User Agent Switcher 0.6.9
- ZoomFox 0.73

It's my personal opinion those extensions shouldn't make Firefox crash,
because Firefox is made to be personalised, wasn't it? ;)

apt-cache show flashplugin-nonfree says:
Version: 9.0.21.78~ubuntu1~edgy1
Maintainer: Trevi [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Filename:
pool/edgy-seveas/backports/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.21.78~ubuntu1~edgy1_i386.deb

Java is the sun-java5-plugin, up2date version ( Version:
1.5.0-08-0ubuntu1)

Hope this helps.

[Bug 81713] Re: sky2 hardware hung? flushing (System crash (reproduceable))

2007-02-02 Thread Sheer Pullen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 68338 ***

I have a similar problem on a dapper system - *very* reproducable,
whenever copying files from a gigabit host, takes about 5 minutes to
hang. Ethernet interface is then unusuable, but machine stays stable.

Problem still exists in 2.6.17-50, the latest kernel I've been able to
find .deb files for.

Trying the blacklist solution..

Well, the system still finds the card with that module blacklisted..
time will tell whether it locks or not, I've just started another
attempt to copy all my mp3s from a server that is being retired to the
machine in question (both have gig E cards, this has been a sure-fire
way to get the machine incommunicado so far)

[Bug 82927] feisty fawn no network connection

2007-02-02 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

feisty fawn herd 3 download 1 February 2007
After bootup there was a message about a crash, apparently add/remove
program?
Going on:

Network manager icon on top line, right side just before speaker volume says:
No Network Connection
After booted from Live CD, ifconfig did not return an IP. Ping the gateway
didn't work.
Network DNS showed IP's from my gateway and from the DSL nameserver, so during
boot CDLive did in fact get out on the internet.
From terminal I issued:
dhcp
which then got an ip address, and ping the gateway worked. Firefox connected
to ubuntu hence I'm writing this entry.

Network Manager still says no connection which is not correct which is
a bug since I'm making this entry through the connection.
