[Bug 83151] Re: Kubuntu Herd 3 fails to start X on Inspiron 5100
Okay, after further hardware testing, I think I've isolated the problem to my wireless card, a D-Link GWL-G630 PC card with an Atheros chipset. When I tried booting the Kubuntu CD with the wireless card not inserted, it went through the whole boot process properly, including starting X. When I tried inserting the card in during the live environment, the device was not picked up by the system and checking /dev found no new nodes that would indicate a wireless device. I'd have to find if the other person over on the forums that was having this problem has an Atheros wireless card, or if it's something else about the hardware. -- Kubuntu Herd 3 fails to start X on Inspiron 5100 https://launchpad.net/bugs/83151 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 58613] Re: Problem with libtag
Me too. - Ubuntu Edgy - Samba share from a Linksys NSLU2, mounted with smbfs - Approx 7Gb library. What's bizarre is that the files it claims to have a problem with play ok and you can import their directories into the collection individually. There's nothing wrong with the files but it fails in the same place every time. Rhythmbox has no problem reading the whole collection. I'd rather have an incomplete collection than none. Shouldn't Amarok collection run to completion even if it does get errors from taglib? I'd also like to see the winamp approach that drag'n'drop into the collection pane just read tags rather than copying files. If that's what it's doing. [Bug 67996] Re: x11-common preinst script fails (was: aborts /usr/X11R6/bin not empty)
Actually, since you can't know which packages in multiverse and what not might still have spurious files in /usr/X11R6/bin it's probably better to go with the suggestion in comment #6 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/67996/comments/6 In other words, installation should not fail; either a warning should be generated and the offending files listed (this would have helped people immensely in debugging this problem!) or perhaps they should even be moved elsewhere, as Michael suggested (but then that is a policy violation too, isn't it?). Then the user can remove offending packages as they see fit, and the preinst can remove /usr/X11R6/bin at a later date when it is finally empty, whenever x11-common is upgraded again. [Bug 83529] Image shift when redrawing
Public bug reported: Recently a new bug has started to bug me (pun intended). It involves a temporary mismatch in redrawing an image in certain programs. Here are two ways to reproduce: 1. Choose some simple repetetive wallpaper in kde ("All the good people" supplied with kde in a tile mode is a good example) 2. Make sure you can actually see wallpaper under the icons. 3. Open some program window so that it occupies a big proportion of the screen, but not everything (say 3/4 of the screen), so that the wallpaper is visible. 4. Move the window around rapidly with you mouse. Results that I observe: the image is first repainted instantenously, but slightly shifted compared to the correct image, and then it is repainted _again_ this time in correct position. This happens quickly, but the movement of the image several pixels can be seen during the second repainting. Alternatively, instead of moving window around one can minimize and maximize window for the same effect. Second way to reproduce: 1. Open the same image in say "kgwenview" zoom it so it takes whole screen, and do the same. The effect is more easily seen when it is open in full screen mode, but is present in non full-screen mode as well. Note that since this bug requires that repainting to be slow enough, if you have a significantly faster computer than I do, you might not be ableo to reproduce it. So, to reproduce this bug I advise to run some CPU intensive program in background. Maybe one also needs to disable hardware graphics acceleration since my graphics card is some kind of built-in chipset whose permormance has probably never been looked at. My machine is Pentium IV 3Ghz running Kubuntu 6.0.6. According to System Settings->Display->Hardware my graphics card is i810, but how accurate that is I do not know. If you need some additional information about the configuration or bug, do not hesitate to ask. --Boris ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Image shift when redrawing https://launchpad.net/bugs/83529 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 83368] Re: upgrade to 6.10 fails with page fetch failure
Brian: I first did a general 6.06 upgrade to make sure that I had the latest code. I then did the wget, which was successful. The next step did not work as you wrote the command, that is - bzip2 Packages.bz2 gives an error message that Packages is already in the compressed mode. The correct command is bunzip2 or bzip2 -d to uncompress Packages.bz2 to Packages. I tried bunzip2 - which was successful. I reran gksu "update-manager -c" with the updated 6.06 system and got the same error message as before. I am not a linux expert, but am guessing that the update-manager script is using bzip2 where it should be using bunzip2. Let me know what other things you would like me to try. [Bug 83118] Re: Some components are non-free
Robert: There are plenty of other trademark policies for GPL software out there http://lwn.net/Articles/216049/ however most of the trademarks are not aggressively enforced. A notable exception is Red Hat - RHEL is GPLed, but Red Hat is a trademark, so people who exercise their GPL rights have to rename the result http://www.redhat.com/f/pdf/corp/RH- 3573_284204_TM_Gd.pdf so we end up with CentOS. A strict reading of many of the other policies would result in mass renaming of many packages, but (IANAL) trademarks are controlled by actual enforcement actions, not policies, so in practice this doesn't happen. So there's lots of trademark policies out there, and trademark law is not incompatible with Free Software, but the actual enforcement varies a lot and there's not currently a standard trademark policy that allows use by the free software community but retains the right to smack down bad people (eg distributors of firefox with viruses). http://tieguy.org/blog/2005/09/16/fri-16-sep-2005/ http://tieguy.org/blog/index.php?s=trademark&paged=2 and we can but hope Luis will write the one true GPTML once he finishes his degree. Back to the point, the difference between mysql-query-browser and firefox is that MySQL AB doesn't aggressively enforce its trademarks against distributions who ship versions of MySQL software. IANAL, but the lack of enforcement gives tacit approval of this use of the MySQL trademark by distributions, despite it not being permitted by the MySQL trademark policy. -- Some components are non-free https://launchpad.net/bugs/83118 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
