[Bug 84489] ~/.bughelper/config not created by sudo apt-get install bughelper

2007-02-10 Thread David Farning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bughelper

Step 8 of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugHelper/Documentation/WritingClueFiles
indicates that ~/.bughelper/config should exit after bughelper
installation.

~/.bughelper/config was not present after bughelper installation on my
feisty system.

As you can tell, I am quite eager to start running bug helper against
mozillateam bugs.

thanks
David

[Bug 69217] Re: lvm on cryptsetup with initramfs infinite loop

2007-02-10 Thread Yves-Eric Martin
This long delay at every boot is most annoying on a laptop, where
battery time is precious. Ironically, laptops are also where having an
encrypted filesystem makes a lot of sense...

More than 3 months after this bug has been submitted, the status is
still "Unconfirmed", with an importance "Undecided". How can we get this
bumped up?

[Bug 84435] DELL 1450 with ndiswrapper and NetworkManager

2007-02-10 Thread TrixSlice
I'm new to linux, so -10 was my first kernel. Instantly with the update
to -11 my wireless Internet was dead. NetworkManager did NOT show wlan0
anymore.

I'm not sure how Linux operates, and how programs deal with kernels so I
thought I might have to update all my programs. I proceeded to remove
ndiswrapper, NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant. I cleanly reinstalled
everything and still the same problem, but I got my wireless network to
be displayed, I just can't connect.

I learned on the Ubuntu forum that I can Esc on boot and change to the
-10 kernel. I plan on trying that after I post this.

Hope this gets fixed, Windows looks good right now.

[Bug 84487] removing deb leaves symlink which causes apache to fail starting

2007-02-10 Thread KarlGoetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

on an Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS system:
when backuppc is removed, it leaves a file in /etc/apache2/config.d which is a

apache is unable to find backuppc. this causes apache to fail to start.

[Bug 84485] Notvatel Merlin UX870 HDSPA card not supported on Kernel 2.6.17

2007-02-10 Thread James W. Dumay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.17

The Novatel UX870 HSDPA (using the airprime module) card is supported in
2.6.20 but not 2.6.17 (edgy). These cards are very common with carriers
such as Sprint (USA) and 3 (Australia) for accessing wireless broadband
services and are one of the only decent ways of accessing this kind of
service using Linux.

The only difference between airprime in 2.6.17 and 2.6.20 in terms of
this devices functionality are the device id's.

[Bug 52026] Re: CD Error check progress bar goes forward then backwards

2007-02-10 Thread c0d3h4x0r
I observed similar behavior using Ubuntu 6.10 AMD64 DVD ISO. During the
DVD error check, there are several graphical problems:

 1. The progress bars starts by doing a "Cylon Eye" scan (sweeps right,
then back left) before it starts actually progressing to the right
during the error check. I don't know if this is by-design due to some
developer who was just trying to be "cute", or whether it's a code
defect, but either way it's unintuitive to the user.

 2. The progress bar contains graphical glitches (noisy/random pixels
along the bottom-right edge).

 3. The status text at the bottom of the screen appears in a very dark-
grey color that is almost impossible to read; need brighter text.

4. (Not a graphical problem, and this may belong in a separate bug): The
user can press CTL-ALT-F1 through CTL-ALT-F12 and switch virtual
terminals while the error check is happening. Once that is done, I
found no way to successfully switch back to the graphic screen (with the
progress bar) that was initially presented. This is a horrible and
unexpected user experience, especially for users with no prior Linux
experience.

I will come back and attach some digital camera shots of what I'm
talking about.

I also have this problem.

IBM Thinkpad A31 with Actiontec Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset

Worked fine with Ubuntu 6.10 2.6.17-10 and stopped working as soon as I
applied the linux-image-generic 2.6.17-11 update.

KraetziChriZ - would you be able to elaborate on your solution? What is
it about the -11 update that would require this "blacklist" method? i.e.
why was it not necessary with -10 but is with -11? Is this a recommended
solution, or a temporary workaround? Any extra info would be great.

[Bug 84480] power button is ignored by acpi scripts when running kpowersave

2007-02-10 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

The power button is ignored by the acpi-support scripts when kpowersave is
running. However kpowersave
does not have any capability to manage what happens when power button is
pressed. It can handle lid events though.

from /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh

# If gnome-power-manager, kpowersave or klaptopdaemon are running, let
# them handle policy This is effectively the same as 'acpi-support's
# '/usr/share/acpi-support/policy-funcs' file.

I would argue that letting kpowersave handle something that it can't handle is
not the best idea.
Unless I have missed something ?

[Bug 84475] [gnome-schedule] GUI behaves wrong

2007-02-10 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-schedule

Just installed gnome-schedule v1.0, by using Synaptic, on an Ubuntu Edgy
amd64. Greek locale

I noticed the following bad behaviour of the GUI when running as a plain user:
I insert a new task. It doesn't make any difference if it is recurrent or once.
I press OK and I can see again the list of the scheduled tasks.

- Isn't the user meant to be asked for giving their root password?

- Every ten seconds, a new line appears in the tasks list, as a copy of
the last inserted task. The list is getting longer and longer. If I
reboot the program, I get only one instance per task. If ran from a
terminal, there is once a gtkWarning:

/usr/share/gnome-schedule/mainWindow.py:249: GtkWarning: gtk_list_store_remove:
assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, list_store)' failed
  self.treemodel.remove(iter)

and every ten seconds:

no crontab for user

- The column of "Date Time Settings" displays "On Friday at Feb" no
date, no time.

- When a task on the list is focused, the "properties" and "delete" buttons on
the toolbar OR the menu should work. Instead:
a. When I click on the "properties" button, I get a popup "Please select a
task" but the task is always selected! Therefore the tasks cannot be edited.
if ran from the terminal, there is the error:

Mon Feb
local variable 'hour' referenced before assignment

b. When I click on the delete button, I am asked for a confirmation, but
then the task stays were it was, on the list. If I reboot the program,
it is THEN that the task is removed off the list. No error displayed on
the terminal

- I don't know if this is meant to be hapenning, but no entry appears in
the crontab (obviously cause it is an anauthorised user, nobody asked
for a password). Events don't happen.

if gnome-schedule ran with sudo:
tasks are not displayed in the list. No error popup is displayed, but if I
check the terminal window there is a "no crontab for root" notification:

ALSO, these bugs occur for both authorised and unauthorised users:

- Help > About: There is a popup displaying the version. The close
choice on the button or the window menu does nothing, the window stays
there... If I click on the other button (i think in the english locale
should be sth like attribution) then all buttons halt and are not any
clickable.

- Help > Manual: doesn't exist, could not find files.

- Icon gets installed in Application menu instead of System menu

[Bug 84473] manual partitioning fails in numerous fatal ways, ERASES WRONG PARITTION. Bad kubuntu! Bad!

2007-02-10 Thread Fitzhugh Lovette
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Tried reinstalling kubuntu 6.10 because swap space on first install came
out at just some tiny number of megs instead of 2 GB (not sure why).
This time decided to have it put grub on sda5, the first partition (100
MB) on my only HDD. Previously it had put grub in the boot sector w/out
my realizing it, which I didn't like (wanna fix that too please???)

It crashed. I really really want ubuntu and kubuntu etc. to succeed, and
I'll make it work for me, but the whole partition process, well, only
way to put it clearly is it SUCKS DONKEY DICK!!! Really, people, I'm
pissed! First time it decided the numbers of my partitions were
different than those gparted came up with in my previous distro
(puppylinux, like it matters). Because of this it erased the WRONG ONE,
nuking all the very important files on my hard drive, which I'd kept on
a separate partition, never imagining it would screw up the wrong one. I
know you are probably going to assume this didn't really happen, that I
screwed up, but it did. I can't say it was kubuntu and no gparted, since
I'd majorly tweaked and re-tweaked my partitions, but it was bad bad
bad. Thank god for backups.

Enough whining... this time once again the partitioning process showed
problems.

All the following happened after choosing to manually edit partition
table...

-Clicking on "Create" without having selected a blank space on the disk in the
disk diagram at the top causes the program to hang.
-Creating multiple partitions and committing fails... it creates the partitions
but does not format them to be ext3 etc... just leaves them as unknown (and
takes only moments, not enough to get the workdone anyhow.
-Even when I got it to [apparently] correctly format the various partitions by
creating and committing them one by one it still showed just three partitions
out of five in "step 6 of 6" - "prepare mount points"... no idea why, but
restarting the installer worked. Or it did until it choked on grub.

I only got an actual crash that led to it spitting out stuff to the
screen to include here with the grub error, so here it is:

[Bug 84470] CPIA webcam support has sysfs problem

2007-02-10 Thread grendel970
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-27-686

I have an old intel Qx3 microscope which is treated like a webcam. This did
work in the 2.4 kernel series upon research,
but nor I am getting the following errors when plugging in:

It lods up /proc/cpia/video0 and I can even cat that file and get the
parameters, as well as turning the toplight on by echoing to this
device. Now video0 which is part of v4l will not work, I've tried
vidcat, gqcam, streamer, nothing works.

After a while of messing around with it I can get kernel errors like this:

Public bug reported:

I play Sudoku almost completely manually (i.e. I don't use hints or

saved as you go along closing the window and restarting the program
allows me to start from where I left off and it will register the game
being finished after the restart.

the error one month ago, on Ubuntu Edgy amd64.

Let's say I have a website on an FTP server. I used the (gnome) 'Places
> Connect to server' menu to connect to my server as FTP. I got a
nautilus window displaying remote files, and I also opened a window with
the local files. Then I copied and pasted the files from my local folder
to the remote server . The files to be uploaded already existed on the
remote server, so there were 198 files all to be replaced by their new
versions.

It asked me: Files exist. Replace them? I selected yes to all...

And then. The stupid, look at what it did: It popped up a window saying
"preparing transfer". Then it deleted all the old files first, while
preparing the transfer, and AFTERWARDS started putting the new version
of theirs one by one. The result was that the site was more or less down
for two hours and about two hundred of visitors got a file not found
error (it is a popular site).

[Bug 84467] md5sum can't read md5 files with CRLF line terminators

2007-02-10 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

I know this is going to be weird, but...

I'd very much like it if tools like md5sum handled files with CRLF
terminators better. I just tried checking a set of files using an .md5
summary generated on windows, and it doesn't work.

(1) This is really annoying. It took me five minutes to figure out that
it was the line terminators that were the problem. This was compounded
by the fact that neither "cat", "vi" nor "gedit" show any sign of the
distinction by default.

(2) This kind of issue is never going away, and it'll only grow with
more people using both systems. Already most tools, including almost
every text editor, do this by default.

(3) It's more than annoying: I intended to write a script that (among
many other things) checks such files often. If I need to check the line
terminators myself, it's going to take several times more effort. (Well,
at least double the amount.) And this will have to be done for all such
scripts.

(4) In the case of md5sum, there really is no excuse not to accept the
other kind of terminators. The syntax of the .md5 files is _very_ easy
to parse, CRLF terminators never change in any way the semantic, and
reading the .md5 files is a negligible effort compared with actually
checking the hashes, so there's no "inefficiency" problem. There's no
chance of backwards incompatibility, as long as output always uses the
same terminators it used to.

(5) The current errors shown for such files are nonsensical. (More
precisely, they don't indicate the problem unless you're already
familiar with it.)

This feature request is written for md5sum because that's where I had a
problem, but I'm sure this applies for many other core utils.

By the way, as I was searching for an answer in other places I saw

usbdevX.X epXX files in the dev folder. I'm an absolute newbie to linux

[Bug 84464] frequent X freezes (6.10, x86_64, nv driver)

2007-02-10 Thread David Carlton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Fairly frequently, X freezes on me. I'm using Ubuntu 6.10, x86_64
architecture; my video card is:

05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV37GL [Quadro FX
330/Quadro NVS280] (rev a2)

I'm using the stock xorg configuration; the "nv" driver is being used.

I don't yet have any consistent way to reproduce it. For what it's
worth, most or all the times this has happened, I've been using XEmacs;
I'm not sure if XEmacs is doing anything weird or not, but it shouldn't
be possible for it to freeze X...

By "freeze", I mean that either it completely stops responding or only
mouse movement occurs Control-Alt-Backspace (or is it -delete? I've
tried both), C-A-F1, etc., don't work. If I ssh into the machine
remotely, I can kill -9 X and things will go back to normal. (Less
drastic kills don't seem to have an effect.) I've never had any
problems with the computer when not using X (I log into it remotely
frequently), and I never had any problems with the computer when I was
using it with Fedora Core 5 for most of a year, so it seems unlikely
that I have hardware problems.

The only bug I found that seemed at all related was Bug 4579, but that
bug reports problems on startup, so I'm opening a different bug. I will
follow that bug's suggestion of using the "vesa" driver, though.

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide or of
any suggestions you might have.

[Bug 84465] cannot acces to the "select pkg sources window"

2007-02-10 Thread Riccardo Lucchese
Public bug reported:

Sorry, as I'm using feisty in italian I'm not sure of the name of the window.
By the way if you go in the gnome-control-centre, in the system group you can
find something wich can be translated literally "Software sources".

Well the point is that after clicking on the button absolutely nothing
happens. It doesn't work even from the menu in synaptic.

At the first boot I'm quite sure it worked; I can't say what happened
but when I finished upgrading packages and doing some personalizations
in other programs it just didn't work anymore[after a couple of boot it
still doesn't work]. Maybe it was "somehow a bit too confusing": I was
downloading upgrades, copying a dvd into my home and tuning some
properties in programs

[Bug 84463] Exaile need python-gtkhtml2 to show the "Information" tab

The exaile site talk about the need of python-gnome2-extras to see the
lyrics and other things in the "Information" tab. As I don't want gnome
in my machine (I use Xubuntu) and liked Exaile especially by its
Information tab, I started a search by the packages needed to show the
desired informations. The solution was to install python-gtkhtml2 and
their dependences.

This package are not required to execute the player, but if the user want to
see the music lyrics or wikipedia informations about the music, he must install
the package.
Set "python-gtkhtml2" as required or suggestion is a good solution to the
