I have manually updated my system today using aptitude. After this update, the dialog A new version of Kubuntu has been found no longer appears. The effect is that I can no longer reproduce this bug. [Bug 50971] Re: kdesu will not start apps
Okay, I take that back. I'm almost certain that bug #72545 is a duplicate. The following steps reproduce the bug reliably for me: 1. Open Konsole 2. Do a sudo -k to get a clean slate 3. Run e.g. sudo ls (just some arbitrary, not too-complex command; sudo dmesg works as well) 4. exit (this should close Konsole) 5. Immediately launch Adept No password dialog will appear, kdesu will hang. Here's an explanation attempt (with my very limited knowledge about sudo): Whenever you make a successful sudo attempt, sudo records that somewhere in order to save you from having to retype your password. Now sudo must somehow remember the context in which you made that successful attempt, so it stores the terminal that in ran on. In step 3, this happens to be some pseudo terminal. In step 4, you close that pseudo terminal, but obviously sudo won't know that, so the record of the successful sudo attempt is still there. In step 5, kdesu launches sudo, using a pseudo terminal for communication. It will just use the first available pseudo terminal, which happens to be the one that we just closed. Sudo will see the applicable record and thus not prompt for a password. Kdesu gets confused by that and hangs forever. -- kdesu will not start apps https://launchpad.net/bugs/50971 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62804] Re: MIME Digest Sub-Message Subjects Chopped On Wide Displays
The format of the listing is given by the attach_format configuration variable. The default for this includes a fixed-width entry for the description (which is the e-mail subject) of %.40d. You can remove the .40 to allow the subject to be any length, but if the subject is very long, it can push the mimetype, encoding and size information off the side of the screen. The reason this isn't a problem with the main mailbox index is that the subject is the last thing on the line, and so is simply truncated. You might be able to find a completely different attach_format setup that you like better which also has the description at the end of the line. -- MIME Digest Sub-Message Subjects Chopped On Wide Displays https://launchpad.net/bugs/62804 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 86704] Empty fonts.dir file stops fonts being found
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfonts-scalable This bug appears to be already known, but I cannot find a bug report for it. Existing discussion is at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=313994 . I was bitten both by bug #63408 (which is mentioned in the above thread, and which I fixed) and also by their empty fonts.dir problem. aptitude reinstall on both x-ttcidfont-conf and ttf-bitstream-vera had no visible effect for me - xlsfonts | grep vera found no lines. Using their proposed fix: cd /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType sudo cp fonts.scale fonts.dir and restarting X (log out and back in) solved the problem entirely. Prior to this, fonts.dir existed but was only two bytes long. I think the first was the (ASCII) digit zero; the second was a newline. (I was looking at it through hd, and 0x30 0x0A rings a bell. (Ok, ok, that's 0x07, I know :-)) Anyway, this seems to be a simple matter to fix, and as no-one else (appears to have) submitted it, here it is. PS Apologies if this is the wrong package to report the bug against; dpkg -S tells me that /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.dir is from xfonts-scalable. ** Affects: xfonts-scalable (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Empty fonts.dir file stops fonts being found https://launchpad.net/bugs/86704 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
