Re: [Bug 70535] Re: nautilus crashes when copying a 4G file on a vfat volume

2007-02-21 Thread Danilo Cesar
I Think that people understand your point... =)

Louis-Xavier Brusset wrote:
I agree, FAT 32 can't handle Those hudge files, but nautilus should not
crash, it should raise an error like FAT 32 file system is unable to handle
 files larger than 4GB, Sorry.
 IMHO this is a minimum.

Did you try to copy a 4.5GB from a NTFS volume to a FAT32 volume on Windows
? Explorer does not crash !

2007/2/21, Kurt von Finck [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. FAT32 cannot store or manipulate
files in excess of 4GB. On any platform.

This is a limitation of FAT32, not a bug.

 --

The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GiB minus 1
B (232−1 bytes). For most users, this has become the most nagging limit
of FAT32 as of 2007, since video capture and editing applications and
some other software can easily exceed this limit. Most new Windows
machines now ship with NTFS and thus avoid these problems, but those who
run dual boot systems or who move external data drives between computers
with different operating systems have little choice but to stick with
FAT32 (although between Windows and Linux it is possible to use ext2 or
ext3 through the use of external drivers such as ext2 IFS).

[Bug 78320] Re: Adept Updater crashes on update

2007-02-21 Thread Nicolai Hähnle
I have manually updated my system today using aptitude.

After this update, the dialog A new version of Kubuntu has been found no
longer appears. The effect is that I can no longer reproduce this bug. However,
I am not certain whether
a) the bug has really been fixed or
b) the bug is simply masked because the updated has been installed manually.

However, do note that even before today (that is, two weeks ago) I
already updated manually using aptitude, but the bug was still there. So
it seems likely that something really is different in the new version of
Adept.

[Bug 86697] terminal required: idjc forces users to use the terminal because jackd needs to be run

2007-02-21 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: idjc

Steps to reproduce:
  - install idjc
  - run idjc
  - select default profile (so just press ok)
  - get a message:

The JACK sound server needs to be running in order to run IDJC.
In order to manually start it try something like:

$ jackd -d alsa -r 44100 -p 2048

  - Why doesn't it run it? If it knows its not running and it needs to be
running?

Maybe I'm missing something here. But instead of showing the message it should
just launch jackd..
Forcing users to use the terminal is not the way forward.

Suggested fix:
  - run jackd when it is not running at launch time
  - if we automatically started jackd, we kill it at when idjc closes

I have the exact same problem. Am using Frugalware 0.6rc1 here.

machine warsow and mouse just work in all other WM's and/or DE's. Just NOT in
GNOME. In previous version(s) it worked (2.16.x)
Also got the same mouse as hangy: MX510 connected to USB port.
Self-compiled metacity without composite feature didn't work either. I don't
really know where the problem is or to search for.

ADD: Today starting warsow in GNOME 2.17.91 the mouse worked! About ~30

[Bug 50971] Re: kdesu will not start apps

2007-02-21 Thread Nicolai Hähnle
Definitely sounds like bug #72545 is could be a duplicate, but I
couldn't say for certain. Whenever I suffered this bug, I was definitely
working with Konsole as well, though I'm not certain whether I had
invoked sudo manually.

I tried reproducing both this bug and bug #72545 per the given
instruction right now, but no such luck, i.e. I couldn't reproduce
either of them. Unfortunately, this bug has always appeared to be quite
non-deterministic.

6. Last night it was still working, I ran update-manager, and upgraded to

7. I rebooted to see what all updates did
8. It stopped working

[Bug 50971] Re: kdesu will not start apps

2007-02-21 Thread Nicolai Hähnle
Okay, I take that back. I'm almost certain that bug #72545 is a
duplicate.

The following steps reproduce the bug reliably for me:
1. Open Konsole
2. Do a sudo -k to get a clean slate
3. Run e.g. sudo ls (just some arbitrary, not too-complex command; sudo dmesg
works as well)
4. exit (this should close Konsole)
5. Immediately launch Adept

No password dialog will appear, kdesu will hang.

Here's an explanation attempt (with my very limited knowledge about sudo):
Whenever you make a successful sudo attempt, sudo records that somewhere in
order to save you from having to retype your password. Now sudo must somehow
remember the context in which you made that successful attempt, so it stores
the terminal that in ran on. In step 3, this happens to be some pseudo terminal.

In step 4, you close that pseudo terminal, but obviously sudo won't know
that, so the record of the successful sudo attempt is still there.

In step 5, kdesu launches sudo, using a pseudo terminal for
communication. It will just use the first available pseudo terminal,
which happens to be the one that we just closed. Sudo will see the
applicable record and thus not prompt for a password. Kdesu gets
confused by that and hangs forever.

[Bug 62804] Re: MIME Digest Sub-Message Subjects Chopped On Wide Displays

2007-02-21 Thread Andrew McCarthy
The format of the listing is given by the attach_format configuration
variable. The default for this includes a fixed-width entry for the
description (which is the e-mail subject) of %.40d.

You can remove the .40 to allow the subject to be any length, but if
the subject is very long, it can push the mimetype, encoding and size
information off the side of the screen. The reason this isn't a problem
with the main mailbox index is that the subject is the last thing on the
line, and so is simply truncated. You might be able to find a completely
different attach_format setup that you like better which also has the
description at the end of the line.

1.3.3.1

You can get the most recent version at:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=132284

The Changelog I found in the 1.3.3.1 package is:

1.3.3.1

Better handling of missing helper apps: no longer warns user if
player has been entered in preferences that tunapie does not
recognise.

1.3.3

Increased timeout for Icecast to allow download of listing.
Audacious now default audio player.
Audacious will not be stopped when switching streams.
Checks for different media players at first startup and gives
warning if no suitable players are found.

1.3.2

Fixed path to icon finally!
New icon added (thanks to everettattebury)

What would be useful is a valgrind log
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind) of gnome-panel when it's crashing.
The problem is that the bug is not easy to trigger so you would have to
run gnome-panel under valgrind for some time and that slows down things
a lot, if you want to try you are welcome

I have already done a reinstall, so those files no longer exist. If I
attempt to update again and the same error occurs, I will try to attach
those files. However, because I am unable to use the GUI and I am pretty
much a novice, I doubt I'd know how to send those files.

Sorry.

[Bug 86704] Empty fonts.dir file stops fonts being found

2007-02-21 Thread Paul Whittaker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfonts-scalable

This bug appears to be already known, but I cannot find a bug report for
it.

Existing discussion is at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=313994 .

I was bitten both by bug #63408 (which is mentioned in the above thread,
and which I fixed) and also by their empty fonts.dir problem.
aptitude reinstall on both x-ttcidfont-conf and ttf-bitstream-vera had
no visible effect for me - xlsfonts | grep vera found no lines.

Using their proposed fix:

   cd /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType
   sudo cp fonts.scale fonts.dir

and restarting X (log out and back in) solved the problem entirely.

Prior to this, fonts.dir existed but was only two bytes long. I think
the first was the (ASCII) digit zero; the second was a newline. (I was
looking at it through hd, and 0x30 0x0A rings a bell. (Ok, ok, that's
0x07, I know :-))

Anyway, this seems to be a simple matter to fix, and as no-one else
(appears to have) submitted it, here it is.

PS Apologies if this is the wrong package to report the bug against;
dpkg -S tells me that /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.dir is from
xfonts-scalable.
