On Sat, 2007-17-03 at 17:48 +, Bogdan Butnaru wrote: For some reason, sometimes the screen remains dark after I re-open the lid. The only thing I can do is reboot the machine. Does your machine have a key to cycle between displays, e.g., LCD, external monitor, both, and back to LCD? Another test is to use ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to virtual console 1, then ctrl-alt-f7 to switch back to gnome. Does your screen awake on either of these? Finally, there is another test that will determine if the laptop is properly detecting the open action: In a terminal window, run the command script -f -c lshal -m halout then close and reopen the lid several times. If you can then wake it up with either of the tricks above, great. Otherwise, reboot*. Either way, attach the file halout to this bug report. It will contain a record of important key events, such as the fn-f7 (if that's what it is), the lid close, and perhaps a lid open. This information may make it easier to know where the problem is and what should be done about it. (*) If you need to reboot, do not run the script command in /tmp, that risks getting cleaned out at reboot. Run it in your home directory, or run it specifically as script -f -c lshal -m ~/halout to ensure that halout is there when you go looking for it. [Bug 24828] Re: IPv6 should be disabled by default
On 17/3/07 Trent Lloyd wrote: Please remember this has *nothing* to do with whether your modem/router *supports* IPv6, but whether its inherrently broken and doesn't handle DNS queries properly. I agree with you 100% on this. I hate to have to find workarounds for poorly developed software and hardware (do it right the first time). I went searching for and found a firmware upgrade to my Actiontec GT701-wg DSL modem and re-enabled IPv6. No more issues with connectivity and speed. However, I am a technically inclined person who wouldn't think twice about diving head first into a new piece of hardware or software. I have 20+ years of IT experience which I can draw on to resolve issues. A typical user (my wife) would not even know where to start. If Linux (pick your flavor) doesn't work right the first time and isn't easy to troubleshoot the novice user will drop it and run screaming back to 98, XP or Vista (hopefully not WinME). I really believe the best solution is to limit the possible problems up front. Give the user time to get comfortable with an OS which actually works better and is more stable than anything they have used in the past and then give them options to make it better. Do a check on boot-up for a Live CD and during the installation process for IPv6 timeout. If it exists then place the blacklist-ipv6 file in the modprobe.d directory and let the user enjoy the OS. Secondly place a configuration option in network tools to remove/add the blacklist file at their option. If IPv6 is disabled when the network manager is opened then place a help button which will lead the user to a good descriptive page of how IPv6 can help or limit their Internet experience. On 17/3/07 Trent Lloyd wrote: I'm not saying this makes it any less of a problem but you must understand its a bug in the devices, they should just pass the DNS requests on properly, I highly expect you'll have exactly the same problem with Vista. Again, I agree with you 100% on this. You must ask yourself if the normal user would even know how to go look for firmware updates for their hardware. I just about guarantee that if I called my ISP for assistance they would have said something along the lines of We don't support Linux and can't help you with your problem and would have never even gotten to the point of identifying a firmware issue as the problem. Every patch listed for my modem had a disclaimer beside it stating not to use it for Vista. Then after looking a a compatibility chart it appeared that IPv6 would probably be the least of my worries if I wanted to run this modem with Vista. Ubuntu and Linux have an opportunity and it would be a shame if a small issue such as this limited that opportunity. Disable IPv6 now and work towards getting a compatibility check in place with clear and simple procedures for the users. yes. I updated to the latest feisty packages last night and tried again. It didn't work. So I tried to download and run the ATI binary drivers directly from ATI. [Bug 93199] Can't submit a bug against gnome-applets
Public bug reported: When trying to report a bug against gnome-applets in Ubuntu (from the package's bugs overview page, https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome- applets/+bugs) I get a rather blunt message: gnome-applets does not use Malone as its bug tracker. To report a bug about gnome-applets, please use its official bug tracker. Is this a recent change (the most recently added bug, bug #89029, was reported a mere two weeks ago) and shouldn't there at the very least be some additional information, such as even just a link to the Gnome bugzilla (I imagine this is what is meant by its official bug tracker)? FWIW the bugs I wanted to report are http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=377248 and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419487. Sorry if this goes to the wrong place; not sure if this is a Malone problem and in that case where to report Malone problems; bugs.launchpad.net didn't make it very obvious (or I'm blind -- it's happened before). ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Can't submit a bug against gnome-applets https://launchpad.net/bugs/93199 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 93200] No mouse in livecd
Public bug reported: Booting to the livecd on Asus K8N4E-Deluxe motherboard with noapic, acpi=off, and pci=nommconfig results in no mouse use at desktop. Booting without those arguments causes X to crash with a Device not found error. Changing driver from ATI to radeon or vesa doesn't fix the problem. Thanks for your help.
