[Bug 46225] Re: Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E4010

2007-03-17 Thread Peter Whittaker
Mark as confirmed based on availability of requested logs and
workaround (likely correct code change for this machine) supplied by
user.

acpi-support seems to be the correct place for this report, since
suspend-resume works when acpi-support variables are updated for this
machine.

Devs, Once these have been changed, will a kernel config change be
required to whitelist this box?

[Bug 93183] network-manager kills ndiswrapper networking

2007-03-17 Thread deathbyswiftwind
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

During an update to network manager approx 5 days ago it killed
ndiswrapper networking. The only way to get networking to restart is by
issueing the command sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart after
every shutdown. Many on the forums have issues.

A simple solution to this problem is to uninstall the network-manager
package but it is quite the nice package.

Iptables gives firewall rules to the kernel, but it doesn't make the

have another firewall package creating them, and the bug needs to be

[Bug 93187] amSynth can't find libjack

Public bug reported:

It tries to open a library libjack.so in a lot of different directories, but
all jack libraries
have names like libjack-0.100.0.so.0. Installing libjack-dev generates the
required
symlink, so it ends with:

Re: [Bug 93128] screen remains dark when lid is up

2007-03-17 Thread Peter Whittaker
On Sat, 2007-17-03 at 17:48 +, Bogdan Butnaru wrote:
For some reason, sometimes the screen
remains dark after I re-open the lid.

The only thing I can do is reboot the machine.

Does your machine have a key to cycle between displays,
e.g., LCD, external monitor, both, and back to LCD?
(Fn-F7 does on my laptop, there is a little graphic
of two displays)

If so, can you try cycling through and seeing if this
makes any difference?

Another test is to use ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to virtual
console 1, then ctrl-alt-f7 to switch back to gnome.
Does your screen awake on either of these?

Finally, there is another test that will determine if
the laptop is properly detecting the open action: In a
terminal window, run the command

script -f -c lshal -m halout

then close and reopen the lid several times. If you can
then wake it up with either of the tricks above, great.
Otherwise, reboot*.

Either way, attach the file halout to this bug report.
It will contain a record of important key events, such
as the fn-f7 (if that's what it is), the lid close, and
perhaps a lid open.

This information may make it easier to know where the
problem is and what should be done about it.

(*) If you need to reboot, do not run the script command
in /tmp, that risks getting cleaned out at reboot. Run it
in your home directory, or run it specifically as

script -f -c lshal -m ~/halout

to ensure that halout is there when you go looking for it.

Thanks!

works fine (I guess that gnomefreak had this package so his feisty's

[Bug 12389] Re: Logging out on a LCD produces a fade effect that is not pleasant

2007-03-17 Thread Christof Krüger
I can imagine that the LCD panel itself (or its controller (or a even
the graphics card)) reduces the color depth which is usually not that
visible but becomes more prominent with dim colors. Therefore, Duncan
Lithgow might even consider the screenshot to be ugly when displayed on
his LCD.

[Bug 85828] Re: Rhythmbox crashes while playing MP3

2007-03-17 Thread Joe Bradley
OK, I'm a bit surprised at what might have happened. Here's another log.
Basically, I ran it the way I usually do, it crashed on this one MP3 the
way it usually does, and I took the dump. If it isn't in this dump, I
don't know what to tell you. When Rhythmbox uses GStreamer, it doesn't
spawn it as a completely different process, does it?

Clarification to last comment: crashed on this one MP3 the way it
usually does: I did not mean to imply that this is an intermittent
problem. To recap, it always crashes on the same MP3s, and it always
crashes in the same spot in the MP3.

[Bug 24828] Re: IPv6 should be disabled by default

2007-03-17 Thread Dfincher
On 17/3/07 Trent Lloyd wrote:
Please remember this has *nothing* to do with whether your modem/router
*supports* IPv6, but whether its inherrently broken and doesn't handle DNS
 queries properly.

I agree with you 100% on this. I hate to have to find workarounds for
poorly developed software and hardware (do it right the first time). I
went searching for and found a firmware upgrade to my Actiontec GT701-wg
DSL modem and re-enabled IPv6. No more issues with connectivity and
speed.

However, I am a technically inclined person who wouldn't think twice
about diving head first into a new piece of hardware or software. I
have 20+ years of IT experience which I can draw on to resolve issues.
A typical user (my wife) would not even know where to start. If Linux
(pick your flavor) doesn't work right the first time and isn't easy to
troubleshoot the novice user will drop it and run screaming back to 98,
XP or Vista (hopefully not WinME).

I really believe the best solution is to limit the possible problems up
front. Give the user time to get comfortable with an OS which actually
works better and is more stable than anything they have used in the past
and then give them options to make it better. Do a check on boot-up for
a Live CD and during the installation process for IPv6 timeout. If it
exists then place the blacklist-ipv6 file in the modprobe.d directory
and let the user enjoy the OS. Secondly place a configuration option in
network tools to remove/add the blacklist file at their option. If IPv6
is disabled when the network manager is opened then place a help button
which will lead the user to a good descriptive page of how IPv6 can help
or limit their Internet experience.

On 17/3/07 Trent Lloyd wrote:
I'm not saying this makes it any less of a problem but you must understand
 its
a bug in the devices, they should just pass the DNS requests on properly, I
highly expect you'll have exactly the same problem with Vista.

Again, I agree with you 100% on this. You must ask yourself if the
normal user would even know how to go look for firmware updates for
their hardware. I just about guarantee that if I called my ISP for
assistance they would have said something along the lines of We don't
support Linux and can't help you with your problem and would have never
even gotten to the point of identifying a firmware issue as the problem.

Every patch listed for my modem had a disclaimer beside it stating not
to use it for Vista. Then after looking a a compatibility chart it
appeared that IPv6 would probably be the least of my worries if I wanted
to run this modem with Vista.

Ubuntu and Linux have an opportunity and it would be a shame if a small
issue such as this limited that opportunity.

Disable IPv6 now and work towards getting a compatibility check in place
with clear and simple procedures for the users.

Thanks,
Dfincher

[Bug 93197] migration-assistant crash if existing partition type changed during install

2007-03-17 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Target system has two existing NTFS partitions. The first is supposed
to be FAT32 for a future FreeDOS install and the second is WinXP. Test
performed with Xubuntu Herd5 liveCD. If I change the first partition to
FAT32 during manual partitioning, the migration assistant subsequently
fails.

Relevant terminal output is as follows:

Re: [Bug 77957] Re: [Feisty] Regression: X freezes on 2.6.20 with fglrx

2007-03-17 Thread Monty Taylor
yes. I updated to the latest feisty packages last night and tried
again. It didn't work.

So I tried to download and run the ATI binary drivers directly from
ATI. I was able to get them installed telling it X_SYSTEM=x710, but
they still wouldn't actually run. Well, they would run, but only at
1024x768, which isn't quite good enough. :)

With the current Feisty fglrx, I still get the error about driver
being for X 7.1 and that I'm running X 7.2, so I think the problem is
mainly that ATI doesn't support X 7.2 yet?

Please let me know if you'd like for me to do anything or provide any
new information.

Thanks!
Monty

[Bug 93199] Can't submit a bug against gnome-applets

2007-03-17 Thread era
Public bug reported:

When trying to report a bug against gnome-applets in Ubuntu (from the
package's bugs overview page, https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-
applets/+bugs) I get a rather blunt message:

gnome-applets does not use Malone as its bug tracker.

To report a bug about gnome-applets, please use its official bug
tracker.

Is this a recent change (the most recently added bug, bug #89029, was
reported a mere two weeks ago) and shouldn't there at the very least be
some additional information, such as even just a link to the Gnome
bugzilla (I imagine this is what is meant by its official bug
tracker)?

FWIW the bugs I wanted to report are
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=377248 and
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419487.

Sorry if this goes to the wrong place; not sure if this is a Malone
problem and in that case where to report Malone problems;
bugs.launchpad.net didn't make it very obvious (or I'm blind -- it's
happened before).

No, this is not a recent change, you're looking at the wrong URL.
Launchpad can be confusing like that.

If you want to file a bug against the ubuntu version of gnome-applets
you need to be at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
applets/+bugs

There are a few bugs filed against Malone
